Issue searching PDFs in RH8 WebHelp

I am getting different results from Robohelp searches when my RH8 Webhelp is generated using a RH command script in our software build process than if the Webhelp is generated from RH to my PC. Specifically, when I search for a specific term in my local Webhelp, the search results list any PDF files that use that term. In contrast, if I conduct the same search in the Webhelp that was generated during our software build process, the search results do not include the PDF files (the Webhelp files are deployed to a network computer when our software is installed).
Note that in both cases, you can click links from within the Webhelp to open the PDFs and you can perform Finds within these files, but I cannot use RH's search to locate specific PDFs in the actual online help for the app, which is something I can do locally.
Here are the details:
I am using Robohelp 8, Window 7, and Internet Explorer.
I am producing WebHelp.
I am producing merged help.
I am linking to the PDF files from the topics. Each PDF is stored as a “baggage file”.
Mark of the Web is not selected.
Any ideas? We promised our customers the ability to search the PDFs for some of our manuals from within our online help system--it worked great when I tested it locally, but isn't working so good in the real online help....

This may or may not be the issue but it would be worth checking that the PDF are being indexed in the final WebHelp output. I've outlined how to do this is this blog post.

  • Indexing and Searching PDF Files

    Hi All,
I am trying to store and search PDF files in the oracle database.
I can insert and index the PDF files just fine but cannot get any result. I always get No Rows.
Here's what I am doing and the issues I am facing.
I created a Table with fields
    ID (VARCHAR)
    NAME (VARCHAR)
    DOC (BLOB)
I inserted the PDF file in the BLOB field through a Java program and insert worked fine as I verified by retreiving the PDF and writing to file.
I created index using following SQL:
create index my_index on PDF_TABLE(PDF_FLD) indextype is ctxsys.context
    parameters ('datastore ctxsys.default_datastore
    filter ctxsys.inso_filter');
The index was created successfully without any problems.
I ran query as follows and got no rows although the searched text is in PDF
SELECT SCORE(1), PDF_FLD from PDF_TABLE WHERE CONTAINS (PDF_FLD, 'Table of Cotents',
    1) > 0;
I tried alternate queries as well with no luck.
    Any ideas ??
    Thanks

After creation the index you need execute next operations.
first, check that your index tables conatins indexed terms. Execute
    select token_text from dr$YOUR_INDEX$i;
Second, you will need to check the index errors table CTX_INDEX_ERRORS. This is owned by the user CTXSYS, and most users do NOT have # SELECT privilege to it by default.
If it's OK, then check that your PDF documents is supported by INSO filter.

    "PDF - Portable Document Format
Acrobat Versions 2.1, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 including Japanese PDF"

For Oracle 9i you could install 9.2.0.4 patchset (it included INSO FILTER 7.5)

  • Windows search PDF

    Hi,
I have an issue with the Search mode from Windows 8.1.
It cannot search for a word into the file.
Yes, I crossed the "File content" box, and it works just fine with words into a Word document, Excel and so on. But with the PDF it only works with the titles.
I should also mention that they are not OCR files, i.e. Those PDF are simply Words printed into a PDF for instance.
    Does anyone have a clue?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Arnaud

    Hi David,
    You saved my life!
The issue was indeed with the 64 bits Version.
I did as advised on this site:
If you cannot search PDFs in Windows 8 64-bit, check three things:
    –  Click on Control Panel / Indexing Options / Modify and make sure the file location is indexed.
    –  Open RegEdit. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\PersistentHandler. Verify that the value is 1AA9BF05-9A97-48c1-BA28-D9DCE795E93C. If the entry is F6594A6D-D57F-4EFD-B2C3-DCD9779E382E, then it was overwritten by Acrobat or Reader, which broke the search index. Return it to its original value, then restart the computer.
    –  Click on Control Panel / Indexing Options / Advanced / File Types. If the entry by PDF says “Registered IFilter is not found,” install Adobe PDF iFilter 11 for 64-bit platforms. Restart the computer.
Indeed the Register Key had been changed. And also the comment on the PDF for the Index Options was reading "Registered IFilter is not found".
What I also did was to restart a complete indexation because the Wsearch mode was seeing new pdf content but not the older one. Maybe if I had just waited it would have done this refresh automatically, but ... who knows.
In any case, again, many thanks!

    Arnaud

  • Secure & Search PDF Files

    Hi,
I am using CF10 with SQL Server 2012. I am building a site for my client that includes catalogues of PDF files. What is the best way to achieve this with Cold Fusion. In the past, the link to the PDF files were bookmarked and were accessible by the users after their subscription is expired __MCE_ITEM__L
I have used Verity 7 years ago (CF MX I think) to do the search. If the user is subscribed to a certain catalogue, within the search results, a link is activated and the user is able to view the entire file. If not only a highlight will come up asking the user to subscribe.
What is the best way to achieve this:
__1. Using SQL Server blob fields? Will Verity be able to search PDFs inside BLOB fields?
__2. SQL Server Full Text Search? How will we return the results to Cold Fusion
__3. Keep the PDF files outside the database, what is the best technique to secure and search the files?
    Any other suggestion is appreciated.
    Thanks So Much

Can't help directly on the question. However, the generic problem in Windows is that the search will only delve into a list of MS denoted file types. I spent a year looking for a file I had misplaced and did not remember the name of. The following link resolved my issue and now I can search for anything in any file. I followed the registry edit in the response. Editing the registry can be dangerous and you should back up the registry at a minimum unless you know what you are doing. I also do not know if the fix is available in Windows 7. As I recall, I did find it in VISTA. Good luck if you use this, but also be careful. Bill

  • Issue printing PDF Packages

I'm having issues printing PDF Packages.Clients have contacted us stating that our PDF Packages don't print properly. Essentially they were only able to print the "coversheet" and nothing else. I ran some test scenarios and noted that PDF Packages print feature behaved differently depending on several criterias:
how it was viewed (ie: desktop, Firefox browser, IE browser)
    what Adobe Reader Plugin
what command was used to access print feature (ie: file>print, ctrl + P, print icon)
So far I've noticed that Adobe Reader utilizes two versions of the Print Dialog Box. The first one shows four choices for "Print Range" (All, Current View, Current Page, Pages...) seems to always be misconfigured and does not print as intended. The second one I've noticed seems to limit your Print Range choices (All, Current View) which usually works.
This seems to be an Adobe bug. This Print Bug exists on both Acrobat 8 and 9, and the bug may or may not exist depending on how you view the "PDF Package" (ie: Desktop, Firefox, IE).
If you open the PDF Package on your desktop and view via Adobe Reader for the most part it prints as expected for "Print Current Documents" or "Print All Documents". Although the "Print Range" is misaligned (ie: "Print All" behaves as "Current View", "Current View" behaves as "Current Page".
If you open the PDF Package on a browser with an Adobe Reader plugin, a different scenario occurs.
You might experience that you're locked into printing only the "coversheet" of the PDF Package.
And again your "Print Range" might be misaligned.
In Adobe Reader 8, a dropdown appeared when you selected "File>Print" or the "Print Icon". The dropdown then gave you an option to "Print Current Documents" or "Print All Documents". Which basically provided you an option to print the entire "PDF Package" or choose to print only a section of the "PDF Package".
In Adobe Reader 9, the option to choose between "Print Current Documents" or "Print All Documents" was removed.
In fact I started to document the instances to see if its an isolated issue and it looks like it fails to print (as intended) 60% of the time. Of the 40% that does print as intended... it looks like half the time the "Print Range" is misconfigured.
Also, I've noticed that Reader utilizes two different "Print Dialog" boxes.
The testing scenario I set up was that you can print in three different ways:
        1. File>Print
        2. <ctrl + P>
        3. <print icon>
Three ways to view the PDF package:
        1. Download PDF Package & view on your desktop via Adobe Reader
        2. View PDF Package on Firefox w/ Adobe Reader plugin
        3. View PDF Package on Internet Explored  w/ Adobe Reader plugin
    My computer is using:
XP Pro SP3,  Acrobat Reader 9
    I've also spot tested on:
XP Pro SP3, Acrobat Reader 8
    Vista, Acrobat Reader 8
    Any Ideas?

    Hi Greg,
Since this is sytem defined settings that you are trying to implement, I presume that the INI changes ought to be done in FSISYS.INI rather than the FSIUSER.INI.
Apart from that most of your INI changes look fine as we are also using pdf as our Output type. Please find the INI change swe have implemented in our system for printing pdf.

  • Search not working in WebHelp

I have a project containing hundreds of table definitions,
for each I have created a separate topic. For example one such
table is FR_STAN_RAW_BOOK and I have created a topic of the same
name. The topic is in the TOC and indexed but when I try and search
for it using the Search bar in the WebHelp toolbar or the
naviagtion pane on the left, the topic is not listed. I'v tried
using wildcard characters too but still no results. Any
    ideas?

Wildcards do not work in webhelp.
    I would experiment with:
    - Creating a new topic with a different name but copying the
code from the body section so that the topic is otherwise
    identical.
    - Changing the name.
    - Trying it without underscores (may not be an acceptable
solution but might reveal the problem)

  • Issue with PDF

    Hi All,
i facing issue with PDF format .
we developed smartform and we are using standard program SAPF150D2.
we did translation for that form englsih to  EURO.
Now if we  see output in OTF format , it showing correct way in EURO.
but , i we see same layout in PDF format,
Insted of showing ( ' )this letter, it is showing # in the PDF layout.
Is there any pointer to know soultion for this.
    Thanks in advance,
    regards,
    JBR

This is likely a problem with the way those links are coded in the PDF file, so the file may have to be saved again using different settings to make it work with PDF Viewers other than the Adobe Reader.

  • Font issues exporting PDF in Keynote 6.5

Is anyone else experience font issues exporting PDF's in Keynote 6.5?
My entire team has been having issues specifically exporting the font Merriweather. It's been fine in the presentation itself, but in the PDF - it's spaced out aggressively and the font weight/type/size is always wrong.
It's been a real hassle, as our brand body copy font is Merriweather and we've never had a problem with it.

The conversion issue seems to be tied to OTF fonts. Converting Merriweather to TTF, deleting OTF versions from Font Book, and/or System Font Folder worked for us. Clearing font cache and restarting can further flush out any legacy conflicts.

  • How can I search PDF's with iTunes mini player search?

I have been storeing PDF's in iTunes books becuase its so simple to use. The new mini player in iTunes 11 mini player is amazing and provides some very nice looking searchs.
However I can't search PDF's via the mini player. Does anyone know how to make this work on a windows install of iTunes?
    Thanks

I've had the same problem as first posted. Tried the suggested solutions and none of them worked. I finally have found somethng that does work.
In iTunes v.11.0.1.12,  I needed to get to the following screen before DELETE would work:
In the uppper LEFT corner select Books.
Then highlight/select the PDF file you wish to delete, and right click to get the menu to pop up.
Now, select DELETE from the menu.

  • Corrupt File issue - Mainly PDF

Has anyone encountered issues downloading PDFs from their site?
We are having several issues, particularly with PDF files where they open fine from the local computer, but after posting to the site, you get a corrupt file message when you try to open it.
I am not sure if this is a PDF issue, a Portal issue, an IE issue or what. Wondering if anyone else has experienced it.
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Mary,
Thank you for the advice. We have run into that frequently with files on the Portal, but that is not the case with these PDFs.
We are now going to try and put a sniffer on the whole process and see if there are any packets being dropped along the way. That is the only way we can make sense of the issue, since a file will work for one person but not another.
We've synched browsers, Adobe version etc... as well.

  • Issue with Mark of the Web, PDFs, and merged WebHelp

I'm sure this has come up before, but I can't locate the definitive answer.
I am using RH8 and have a merged WebHelp system containing a parent projects and 10 or so child projects.  Previously, when I generated the WebHelp projects, I selected the Mark of the Web check box for the parent and all the children. Everything seemed to work fine.
Now, I've been asked to create a new child project with links to a large number of PDF files. After reviewing the documents on this forum, I realized I needed to (1) unselect Mark of the Web to see the PDFs in the generated output and (2) change my IE settings to Allow Active Content to Run from Files on PC. Unfortunately, while I can now see PDFs just fine, my merged help is no longer working correctly--the link from the parent topic to a project generated w/o Mark of the Web no longer works. That is:
    If Mark of Web selected:
         PDFs don't work
         merged help does
If Mark of Web not selected:
         PDFs work
         merged help does not
How can I make everything work?
    Thanks.

    Are you testing locally?
Have you tried after publishing to the server? If not do so as that will likely make the difference.

  • ToC, Index, Search appearing blank in RH8 Webhelp

Hello - I have been reviewing the forum questions and answers for about a year now - some great advice - but I can't seem to find an answer to my current problem, so I need to post it here.
I have recently upgraded our help system from RH7 to RH8. I generated Webhelp this week and all was well on my local system in both IE7 and FF3. The long list of every possible number and letter which was appearing in FF in the search column had disappeared and search was behaving exactly as I hoped. Nothing else looked anything other than perfect.
I made the submission to our engineering team and when it was integrated, I tested again. IE remains fine, but in FF, we get the "welcome" page, but an empty column where the ToC should appear. Same with the index - I can enter a keyword, but I get no results. Ditto for search.
Our test and production environments are different, obviously, than my local environment - I put the Webhelp output on an Apache server and all was well. It only breaks when it goes into the production environment.
I was told to tell you that our Apache server does a rewrite rule to Weblogic (9.2.3) - where, with the exception of the UGLY search results in FF from the RH7 Webhelp, all worked well with RH7 output. Our environment hasn't changed, so we believe that we may need to change something in a config file to accommodate changes in RH8. ( We made the changes to UTF-8 as recommended in earlier posts some months ago.)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Marla

    Hi again
For the Adobe forums search, I find you have to search twice. The first search shouldl bring back some results. What you want is to get to the initial results page.
Click the image below to see at full size.
Now you see a different page.
Again, click the image to see at full size.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Issue with unlinked books in WebHelp Pro project TOC - RH7 and RH8

I've been testing WebHelp Pro in both RH7 and RH8. Have the same problem in both with the topic that automatically displays when you click a book/sub-book that is not linked to a specific topic.  For some reason, WebHelp Pro displays the last topic in the previous book/sub-book. After opening different books/sub-books within the TOC, I determined that there's a browse sequence being created based on the TOC hierarchy even though I do NOT have any browse sequences set up in this project at the topic level.  However, WebHelp thinks that the last topic above the selected book is what should be displayed even though it might not relate to any of the topics associated with the selected book. This is a real usability issue. I was confused by what was displaying and I'm the one who develops the help topics and TOC.
By the way, this does NOT happen when I publish using FlashHelp Pro. In FlashHelp, the last topic that was accessed remains in the topic frame if there is no topic linked to the selected book. This is much more acceptable to the user because the topic is not switching.
I'm assuming that this is a BUG and should be reported!
NOTE: We're still working in RH7 but plan to publish to RH Server 8 using WebHelp Pro.
Because I don't expect this to be fixed soon, we have developed a workaround. We are adding a generic but applicable topic for each book/sub-book. This will be our new development standard but it requires going back into 4 different projects to fix the problem. Not the most efficient use of our time as we're swamped with new topic development.

    Hi.
Yes this is a bug and I'd urge you to report it. You can use this link. The more people that do the greater chance it will be fixed. I have covered the entire problem and the workarounds here.

  • Search Not Working in WebHelp - Suspected Java Issue

The Search function in our output WebHelp system is not working from one user's laptop.  The WebHelp is generated from our RoboHelp 8.  Search does work in everyone else's access to the system.  This Windows 7 laptop displays an "Error on Page" message when he enters a search value and then chooses the Search button.  He says the same error occurs for the Index. Because no other users have this problem, we are definitely thinking it's something in his laptop configuration for Java - as we see the JS file references in the error details, as shown below.
The details for the "Error on Page" message are referencing the following messages and JS files
    Index error messages in details:
Object doesn't support this property or method - whthost.js
    'innerHeight' is undefined - whutils.js
    Search error messages in details:
Object doesn't support this property or method - whthost.js
    'innerHeight' is undefined - whutils.js
'gaFakes[...].nB' is null or not an object - whhost.js
    'Node' is undefined - whfhost.js
What should he check in his Java?  He's using Java 6, Standard Edition, update 16.  Any ideas or suggestions about what he should check on this laptop?  I would appreciate your help and expertise in solving this mystery!  Hopefully I've provided enough details here - but let me know what else I need to provide.
    Thanks so much,
    Susan

We were getting this error sometimes.
I modified the code in wsutils.js as follows:
    Original code:
    function    getClientHeight()
        if(gbSafari3)
return innerHeight;   //this is for safari
    return document.body.clientHeight;      }
    New code:
    function getClientHeight()
    return document.body.clientHeight;
Seems to work (at the cost I guess of losing support for safari browsers - but I haven't tested that), but I can't test that it never fails because it was an intermittent fault...
