Issue w/iMac and Furman power conditioner

Greetings,
I just recently purchased a Furman Power Conditioner PL-Plus Series II
-- go here for info on it: http://www.furmansound.com/product.php?div=01&id=PL-PLUS_II --
to plug my home recording studio gear into (powered monitors, outboard gear, external hard drive, etc). Since it's basically just a really high-end surge protector, I assumed that plugging my iMac into it would also be a good idea. However, when plugged into the Furman my iMac loses all of its busses: no USB, no Firewire, no ethernet. This caused quite a state of panic until I resolved the issue by unplugging it from the furman and back into a standard power strip/surge protector; when I did the busses all returned. My question is simple; does anyone have ANY clue at all why this would happen? Nothing else that I connect into the furman seems to have any adverse effects at all (so far) so I can only assume the issue is with my iMac and not the Furman. At any rate, if anyone can think of any info that might be useful in dissecting this wierd little (or maybe not so little?) issue, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Brandon
P.S. I have already contacted Furman and posted in the iMac and Logic Pro forums as well. Searching for info from as many reliable sources as possible!
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

That would seem to be the case. However, everything else connected to the Furman works fine; powered monitors (2 pair), a Glyph external hard drive, a dbx 166XL (compressor), and a Behringer midi controller (BCF2000) (my interface, a M-Audio 1814, is firewire bus powered; though no, not a factor, as I tried booting up the computer jacked into the Furman with the 1814 disconnected). Also, other than the busses, nothing else about my iMac seemed to be affected. It's a fairly strange situation. I even talked to a Furman rep to no avail; we went through a checklist of things, which I had pretty much gone through before talking to him. He seemed pretty adamant that if it were the Furman, the other devices would have apparent problems as well (though, granted, they might be a little harder to detect than issues with my computer...). He's basically now waiting to see what I find out here as well! And so... I'm still at a loss trying to figure out what exactly is wrong. Fun stuff....

  • Are there any known compatibility issues with iMac and Google Chrome?

Does anyone know of any compatibility issues with iMac and Google chrome. A Facebook friend who is a photographer posted recently that Chrome had ruined his iMac. He stead that it ran an update on itself that made safari and chrome unusable - slow running overall. In the end he had to reinstall his OS.
Is anyone aware of this and should I un-install Chrome off my Mac?
    Thanks,
    S.

There is nothing official but your post will attract a variety of personal experiences.   I once loaded Chrome and found myself with the dreaded MacKeeper malware, loads of pop ups and conflicts with my system.   Part of the problem is the huge range of add ons you are tempted to  take on, many of which are not as strictly tested as Apple extensions.   I would say, unless you have a specific reason, leave it alone.   The best browser is Firefox and for Macs, Safari is OK.

  • Blank screen on my iMac and blinking power light.

Earlier today, my 20" iMac screen went completely blank, but I could still hear the fan working, so I'm pretty sure it believes itself to be on. I tried to restart it by holding the power button down, but it idn't work. Now, I can still hear the fan working, and the power light is blinking continuously. Can anyone try and help me out?

The same thing is happening to me right now. For reference, I posted this thread as well

  • Corrupted disk issues between iMacs and Mac OSX Lion

My iMac can't boot up, because it started to fill a black bar at the bottom of the screen and it suddenly disappears. Tried to repair my disk but Disk Utility said "the disk cannot be repaired". So I formatted twice and made a brand new installation, and the same problem returned. I went to the apple support and they said that a bunch of iMacs were having the same issue, and told me to stay at snow leopard until a fix was realeased. Is this normal to iMac self-corruption? Or is just a real Lion problem?

  • Connecting my iMac and my Power Book

I am about to acquire a PB and have an iMac G5. They will usually be in adjacent rooms on a wireless network. I would like to be able to receive my mail simultaneously on both machines, and if possible, have any replies or changes appear on both computers at the same time. I use Entourage education version, and there's no problem with running two versions of Office at once. My mail servers are POP. I do not have .Mac (had a bad experience with them when they first started and never went back).
Basically, what I want is an instantaneous clone of each machine to the other. Is there a simple, elegant way to do this?
I originally posted this on the iSync board, but I don't think iSync is the solution.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
There is no way to convert a POP account to an IMAP account. The server type is determined by your service provider.
The only option I could think of there, would be to sign-up with a mail server that offers IMAP and can also retrieve e-mail from other servers.
I don't know of any right at the moment. I don't use IMAP.
But, I do recall seeing some servers with that option.
There are also Mail forwarding programs and services. So, you could always try to employ one of those methods to get your mail forwarded to an IMAP account.
One such service would appear to be here:
    http://www.emailaddresses.com/email_forward.htm
And, some free IMAP accounts are listed here:
    http://www.emailaddresses.com/email_imap.htm
But, ultimately, the simplest solution would be to move over to using an IMAP mail server and address.
    I hope this helps.

  • 24" iMac and 3GB RAM limit issues

I have a legitimate concern with the 24" iMac and wanted to know if anyone else thinks it's an issue. Read Apple's tech note on late model 2006 iMacs including the new 24" model.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/HWTechRAM/Articles/RAM_implementation.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40003899-DontLinkElem entID5
In order to use RAM in an interleaved fashion it states you must use matched pairs. Meaning same size and type. SO.....if the new iMacs will take a 2GB SO-DIMM then why won't it register 4GB total? You can configure your new iMac with 3GB of RAM but it won't be interleaved. On top of that 2GB SO-DIMMs are super expensive in the +$700 range. More then MacPro's FB-DIMMs.
I don't see anyone talking about this but it seems to be a legitimate concern.

That IS the point, what person paying $2000 for a computer would be willing to pay another $1500 for a 4GB RAM upgrade? I just think right now it's hurting Apple's sales of the 24". The 24" encroaches on the prosumer market and at this point in time an affordable 2GB of RAM may seem adequate now but most likely not in 6 years. Which is how long I had my Digital Audio Power Mac. So I think anyone in the prosumer market NOW, like myself, looking for a machine that will last a few years may look away from the 24" and steer toward the Mac Pros. My needs fall squarely in between the 24" iMac and Mac Pros but unfortunately my budget does not. I could live with the 24" even with the expensive cost of the 2GB SODIMMs. I would in fact wait until the prices fell. What I can't live with is the fact that the iMac will only ever be able to use an uninterleaved 3GB when the possibility of an interleaved 4GB seems to be there. I was only able to keep the Digital Audio because I squeezed every ounce of life I could out of it because of various periodic upgrades.
Reluctantly I'm going with the Mac Pro but I REALLY wanted to get the 24" iMac. Thats all.

I have purposely been ignoring your responses to my posts about the heat issues in the newer design iMacs, but if you want really want to ague the point...
First, the iMac is marketed as a desktop model Mac. Not a laptop or MacBook.
I have never owned a MacBook, so I can't attest to how much heat the MacBooks generate.
I Have two iMac models. A 2009, 27 inch screen iMac for myself. And a 2010, 21.5 inch screen iMac for my Fiancée.
As a desktop Mac these are hottest running desktop Macs I have ever owned. Period. I owned two beige Macs, a pre-G3 tower, aG3 desktop, a G4 MDD Tower, the original iMac, eMac, iMac G4 and now my current iMacs.
None of my previous Macs have ever, EVER ran this hot. I have never, also, had any component failures in any of the previous Macs I have owned, either. All of my Macs have been upgraded or modded to some degree over the years.  About 2 years ago I had to press my old G3 back into service. Both my G3 and G4 models have been heavily modded. The G3 ran without issue for a close friend for over a year until that friend went out a got a Mac Mini.
That's a 1996-97 Mac my friend. And it still is in working order and hasn't had any failures.
The fact I am pointing out here is that heat is an enemy to electronic components.
Whether desktop iMac or MacBooks, tightly packed enclosures of heat generating computer components with fans that do not run fast enough at most times to cool off the interior or exterior, will and does slow roast computer components to premature failure.
I do not know how frequent component failure is in the MacBook line up. So I can't attest to those.
I do not participate in those forums.
This is why at some point in computer history, Super Conputers were liquid cooled. PowerMac G5 systems were liquid cooled because they ran too hot!
I have taken my own precautions to keep my iMacs' heat down as much as possible.
I don't  have the money to keep buying a new Mac every 3-5 years when some catastrophic failure happens.
I had to purchase my iMacs used as I couldn't afford the cost of a new iMac with the specs I needed.
My idea, your idea and Apple's idea of acceptable operating temps we can argue all day long.
I feel, personally, that the operating temps are too high and exacerbate operational issues.
I Have been participating in these particular iMac forums for just over a year and have seen plenty of posts of iMac component failures due to both heat and dust, dirt issues from within the iMac.
There can be no other reason for all of these failures. The SuperDrive is, usually, the first to go bad.
It's probably due more to its vertical mounting, but the excessive interior heat isn't helping it.
Next to fail is the GPU. The last to fail, but the most expensive to fix, the Logic Board.
I Have seen plenty of posts in my last year here of all of these failures in iMac less than 5 years old and ,perhaps, a little older. 2008 model iMacs seem to have their issues, too!
Apple is focusing too much on design and aesthetics, rather than longevity of their products, I feel now.
A Mac isn't going to last 7- 10 years anymore.
I don't have stats and numbers. Just common sense.
This is my story and I am sticking to it. For what it's worth.

  • IMac and Time Capsule duplicate IP address issues

I recently bought an iMac and am using Time Capsule as a router.  The TC is plugged into my DSL router via Ethernet and I have 3 Apples and 1 PC on the network.
I keep getting this error ONLY on the newest iMac (the others appear to not have an issue): "Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address (IP address #s in parentheses).  Try Connecting again later.  If you continue to have problems, change the IP address of this computer or the IP address of the other device.  Contact the network administrator if you need more information."
It looks like my newest iMac and TC have the same IP address.  Do I need to change the configuration in my TC because I'm using it to redistribute the internet from my DSL router?

Bridge Mode is correct, so you would want to leave that setting as is.
Once the update is complete, be sure to completely power cycle the entire network. That will allow the router to refresh and hopefully straighten out the IP address conflict.
Just power everything on the network down in any order that want
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem/router first and let it run for a full minute
Start the TC next in the same manner
Start each device one at a time the same way until everything is powered back up
If you continue to see IP address conflicts, then there may be an issue with the DHCP server on your router.

  • IMac display issues: black icons and folders, doubled up files in finder windows, programs won't update

    HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help with my iMac 27" purchased in 2010.  From a previous discussion I started a year ago, I have had virtually nothing but trouble with it.  After the internal hard drive crashing, I was able to install OS X on an external drive and used it for a good 8 months to drive my iMac and I took it to an expert who has replaced it with a 3tb HDD, but at some point the display has gone crazy.  I am not certain if it is hardware, i.e. graphics card or video but I'll describe the symptoms and add some pics to see if anyone has seen this before and knows what the problem may be.
    1.     90% of the screen was covered with white with just a portion of the desktop showing through.
(This happened when I tried to reinstall OS X on the old HDD and the new one, but didn't happen when using OS X install disc)
    2.     Files, folders, photos and some icons on the dock go black
    3.     Files and photos double up when in Finder.  When I'm viewing photos, it shows them but all the previous panes and the photos are jumbled behind the
            photos.
    4.     Anything I open in Preview is completely black, but ColourSync Utility opens everything fine.
    5.     Programs won't update.  They will download onto my iMac but won't update.  Some say, because I don't have OS X 10.6.8 others just won't open.
Including Google Chrome, opens with two tabs open but when I open a third tab the rainbow wheel just turns.  Skype won't open just gives a failure
            report.
    6.     10.6.8 Update Combo downloads but when I restart the screen is covered in white - as in 1. and I have to reinstall OS X 10.6.2 to get the screen to               clear but then all the above problems continue.
    7.     Sometimes videos don't display in Youtube, or the entire page other than the video player is covered in rainbow lines.
    8.     Some buttons are blacked out on selection pages, i.e. system preferences, or saving screens
    9.     Photos opened in FB go upside down and flicker all over the page as my mouse runs over them.
    10.   Photos won't upload into internet editing programs.
I can't find anyone who has had the same issue in all of the discussions I've looked at, but it sounds like I have a video problem, but I wondered if it might be a software problem with flash or something.  Or I have something malicious on my computer.
I also have an iphone 5 that faulted with the iTunes and USB icons and won't fix after trying one of those R-Sims, and I wondered if somewhere along the line it may have even had a virus/trojan/malware that has infected my external drive and then my internal drive.  A reason I have thought that is because I have used my daughter's MacPro laptop and plugged in my external drive and I noticed the windows in hers were starting to do the same thing.
And on top of all that, my fans didn't work for over a year and I had to place an external fan at the back of the computer or it would overheat and shut down, but after resetting the SMU it started working again, but it is very noisy. I have tried to download SMC Fan Control and although it downloads to the HDD, it won't open.
Sorry its such a long post, I do hope with all of this information someone can help me.
    Thanks so much.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and *Sophos Enterprise AV*. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly*
Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

  • So many issues - family of 5, i am using my wifes apple id on my iPhone, my daughter is using my apple id on touch, i need to get all iTunes content off an old PC onto new imac and i just got iphone 5 and want to be able to have evreything work - help!

5 plus years ago my wife had the only Apple ID and as a family we all used her Itunes account to buy and listen to music.  A couple years later, I (husband) bought my first iPhone - the only iDevice in the household.  When I set that iphone up, I used the wife's apple ID as I wanted access to all of the itunes music we had as a family.  So now years later, all of my Apps etc have been purchased via the Wife's Apple ID.  To make matters worse for my situation, my 10 yr old daughter got an iTouch for Christmas and i decided to use my actual (husband) Apple ID as daughter is a minor and I felt I could manage her iTouch Apps content that way.  We have just recently bought our first iMac and I had yet to understand or get to work the iCloud or the Home Sharing of iTunes.  To make matters worse, I have never synched my 3G iphone because of the whole Apple ID issue.  I should also mention that the primary 'authorized' computer for my wife's itunes account is an old PC that we almost never use anymore as it runs soooo slow.  So I am left to wonder how to go about making the transition to get the old PC 'deauthorized' after I somehow transfer all itunes files from the old PC to the new iMac.  I now have the new iPhone5 and i REALLY want to get to the point where i have my iphone on my apple id and my wife has her apple id (no iphone for her yet - probably coming soon though).  On the new iMac i have created a login for me and one for my wife.  I was able to login to itunes on her imac login and i was able to set up iCloud.  it works! - but now my calendar, contacts, photos, etc are on her profile login of the iMac!  HELP me PLEASE!!

Your Apple ID should not be causing problems with your browser. If you describe the problems you are having we might be able to help with those.
    regards

  • TS1367 I have a new iMac and can't get it to turn? Can't find a power button?

Have new iMac and it won't start up. Can't find a power button?

Try to perform a HARD RESET on the printer first. Unplug the power cord from the printer, and leave it out for 30 seconds. Plug it back in, see if it aligns and finishes the job.
After alignment, try to print a test page from the printer or make a copy. This job is to make sure that the HARDWARE of the printer is working correctly.

  • I live in the US but am moving to the UK. I have a iMac and want to know if I can just exchange the power cable or will I need a transformer to be able to use it there?

I have had my iMac for about a year and have just found out that I am moving to the UK from the US. I want to take it but I don't want to damage it. Can I just get a replacement power cable in the UK (like the international switchable plugs for iPads) or will I have to use a step-down transformer? Thanks

Just the plug-end needs changed.  I the UK you should beable to find the cord that plugs into the back of the iMac and has the correct wall-end.

  • How much ram and processing power in my imac will meet my graphic design needs?

    Hi,
I'm in the market for a new imac. I'm trying to figure out how much ram I'll need and which processor will be sufficient for my graphic design needs.
I'm gonna need it to be robust enough to have InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator open at once along with spotify, safari with many tabs open, and a couple other apps including evernote and game from time to time. Also, I'm gonna be managing a good deal of fonts in font explorer. How much ram and processing power will I need in my imac to keep everything snappy with all these apps going at the same time?
Any advice on this would be much appreciated. Feel free to include any other relevant information you think I should know.
    Thanks, Nick

Computers are out of date when you open the box
Ok, getting serious, that iMac should be a viable workhorse for what you want for a good five years, and taht depends on how much ram you put in it, add really fast external storage, and so on.
Didn't throw this in earlier so as to not influence the discussion: my daughter is the senior art director, VP, at a graphics design firm in NYC.  Has been in the business for a number of years.  When she changed out her Mac at work, bought, or company bought, the 27" iMac model just before the latest, with maxed out CPU/GPU, and storage.  They maxed the memory to 32 GB for her, then added a 30" Apple cinema display so she has almost 5' of display in front of her.  There is nothing she cannot have open all spread across that display area.  She works almost exclusively in print media, occassionally condescends to do web stuff.  And has a massive array of RAID drives hanging on it.  But that is a setup an individual would be hard pressed to go with.
At home she uses a MacBook Pro with top cpu and display but that is all.
The point, just how massive do you want to go depends on how fast you have to work; in the office where time is money you need tons of horsepower.  At home, you scale it to your abilitty to juggle other tasks at the same time.
I think your choices have been great, the discussion has focused on what is important and especially what can and cannot be changed in the future.
Best of luck setting this up.
