I updated my iPhone 3GS to the new iOS6 yesterday. It took a while, but everything worked just fine. Today, I tried to do the same to my husband's phone, which is identical to mine. It extracted, but then would not restore. I see the apps that were removed from his phone, as well as the music, in iTunes; but all of his contacts are gone. I've tried every suggestion I can find online, and nothing is helping me locate them. When I right-click on his phone under the Devices header, the drop down doesn't give me the option to restore from backup; it just says Backup. Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Actually.... contacts are part of an iTunes backup.

But it seems the issue here is the fact that you can't find how to restore from a previously created backup. There is no button to hit to do so...
You can go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings (on your device)
This will restart the setup assistant for you... and as you're going through you can select to restore your device from an iTunes backup.

well, first check whether you're connected to the blackberry network...
how can I check whether myself connected to blackberry?
Check within the network bars on the phone whether it is showing you 3G, EDGE or GPRS in capital letters...!!
If not give a hard-reset to the phone (remove the battery put it back once)...
And if it shows in caps letters then try requesting for services again... how? on the phone desktop > within the search bar > type "Host Routing Table".... search results shows you as "options"... select that & select host routing table... afterwards, hit the blackberry menu button > select register...

Once restored you can restore from a backup or sign into icloud in order to recover any contacts, etc that you had on the phone previously. If you are still missing contacts, which is usually one of the most important things on a phone than make sure you have added any and all email accounts you previously had on the phone.

Using iTunes 10.5.2.11 on a PC running 64 bit Windows 7
First did a full back up of iphone using iTunes
Put iphone into Recovery Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 ). Erases all user data and settings!
Disconnected USB cable from iphone
Powered off iphone by holding down Sleep/Off button until slider appeared, slid to off, waited until screen dark
Pressed and kept holding Home button while plugging cable back into phone
I still saw the graphic on the iphone that said to plug into iTunes, so I unplugged and re-plugged cable. (I may have released the Home button too soon)
Recovery Mode alert came up in iTunes.
Followed all iTunes prompts to restore phone - it downloaded and sucessfully installed iOS 5.0.1
iphone did not appear in iTunes due to missing pairing file (that made me nervous)
iphone was now at factory settings. I followed prompts on iphone screen to start reactivation process
Eventually the iphone asked if I wanted to restore from a back-up (whew!)
A window opened in iTunes and I was able to select my previous back-up file for the restore
A full restore from back-up then occured
I also allowed a carrier settings update to occur when prompted (not sure that happens in all cases)
When the restore was done I had to re-enter some passwords, but everything was there
iOS is now 5.0.1 (9A406). The whole process took about an hour.

I have the same problem after updating to the latest iTunes. I purchased an iPhone 4S this past summer and gave my 3GS to my 6 year-old minus the SIM card-- an instant iPod Touch. Try resetting the device.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I think my problem is fixed now.
For the fun of it, I reinstalled iTunes 9.2.1 today (using the exact same installer as I did yesterday), but this time I didn't uninstall iTunes first. As expected, iTunes recognized my iPhone (as I expected it to, until my next reboot).
A few minutes later, Software Update showed up and among the updates is "iPhone SDK Compatibility Update". The description indicates that installing this should fix an issue where iPhones and iPod touches aren't recognized by iTunes. Isn't that interesting?
I installed that update and most of the others waiting for me (including Java, Safari 5.0.1, and a few others - not 10.6.4 though, due to the issues with nVidia graphics cards). After the reboot, I started iTunes, and it saw my iPhone!
So, if you're having this same problem, I'd recommend tracking down this update and see if that does the trick for you. Hopefully it will.

Iphone 3GS on ios6 sound problems

I have just updates a 3GS to ios6 and am having sound issues. The only time all the sounds work is if the phone is plugged in (it doesn't matter if it's a dock or to a computer or to charge). When it is not plugged in it will play songs for approximately ten seconds before the sound cuts out, it will play the ringtone but not the text tone. The majority of my apps have no sound, and some show that the sound cannot be changed (the little speaker has an x next to it rather than showing the volume). It seems to work fine when headphones are plugged in.
Does anyone know a fix for this?

Unfortunately you are stuck if the water indicator has turned red...now I don't mean to argue with you when you say it's never ben wet...but I will say that in order for the indicator to turn red it MUST have a fairly good amount of water or moisture contacting the indicator...that said if you say you treat it like gold then the only possible answer is that someone got it wet that you showed it to or maybe your kid got it wet and didn't tell you...bottom line that indicator doesn't turn fully red without a good amount of water coming in contact with it...so I'd really look at friends or Fam that has touched the phone...
Part two...the fix...sadly with water damage there are no magic fixes...the questions you asked at the bottom about why can they still hear you etc...this is a side effect of the iPhone being partially damaged nd not enough to stop the MIC from transmitting but enough to stop the earpiece from giving sound...you say the speaker works and headphones work...
It is possible that over time the iPhone will again operate properly...for now...I'd go and find a bunch of those little packets of Silica Gel balls that come with many items and stick them all inside a ziplock bag with the iPhone for a good week...DO NOT USE RICE ...use the packets of Silica Gel...This is not a 100% fix but it's the best shot you have of getting operation back that you desire...
If the indicator is red Apple and any authorized agent will NOT be able to warranty the iPhone. There are several out of warranty options but if I remember correctly water damage is not onr of them...you'll have to verify that with Applecare or a store...
