Issue with 2 Lenovo D30 4354-C9U workstations locking up frequently

Okay guys and gals, I am completely stumped at this point with 2 workstations that keep freezing. We use Lenovos throughout our company and they have worked great with 2 exceptions. Those two exceptions are two of my engineers. They are the only two people with this particular model of the D30. They have identical hardware and software. Both machines have the Nvidia k4000 video card in them. Both have a 160GB SSD as the primary HDD and a 1 TB SATA HDD for storage. Both also have 32 GB of memory. The issue is thattypically after 2 1/2 to 3 hours of activity, they both simply freeze. We have replaced the memory in them as well as the video cards, and finally after frustration we had Lenovo send a tech out and replace the motherboard. The result is that less than a week later, the problem is back again. I have also reinstalled Windows...

Dear Mr. Hurd,
I don't know if your staff will make you aware of my open letter to you or not, however I am willing to take that risk and directly write to you. I chose this venue because I don’t want to waste time debating with HP support staff. I already made contact with HP describing my issue with the Laptop I bought for my daughter about three years ago. Unfortunately I was told they could not help me with my issue. My service  tag number is 803757473. As I mentioned, I bought my daughter’s laptop May 2007 and the mother board died 2 month ago. Some might think that the average life of a laptop is about three years. I beg to differ on the grounds that a motherboard should be seen as the engine of the laptop and should not die in a short amount of time. I know in due time any product begin to deteriorate little by little. That is expected. I am sure computers slowdown and so forth in due time too. But failure of the mother board is totally an acceptable to me.
Sir, if you truly stand behind your product, you will make this right. I don’t think I should pay to replace the mother board. I did a lot of reading on the internet regarding this particular model and I believe a lot of people who bought this model are very frustrated at HP. In fact a lot of people decided never to buy your products. Before I reach such a decision, I decided to write you an open letter, hopping you would resolve this issue.

  • Issues with Arch 2009.02 in VMware Workstation [SOLVED]

I installed Arch Linux 2009.02 i686 as a guest in VMware Workstation 6.5.1, my host is Vista x64. The installation of Arch itself and Xorg wasn't a problem although from this point I've had several issues.
I was unable to 'startx' or 'xinit' without getting crashes, however adding hal to the daemons fixed that problem - some wiki entries state to add dbus, but dbus is already started. A lot of content on the wiki is outdated, telling users to use hwd; I did install hwd separately (from sourceforge) although it gave me hundreds? of errors related to PCI and eventually failure to parse some x configuration binary in /usr/bin.
    Multimedia Issues
I then installed xfce4 and gstreamer-plugins. All video and audio play back too quickly, i.e. it seems to play the streams as fast as they can decode. This also happens with flash content such as youtube after I'd installed the appropriate programs. Thinking this may be a timing issue, I editted the vmware config file on my Windows host although it did not help; the timing in the VM seemed to be correct anyway.
    Display Issues
When I run 'startxfce4' from a terminal, Xfce will start as 800x600 - if I go to change this resolution all options show 0Hz as the refresh rate and many options my monitor cannot display are shown even though I have VMware set to allow a maximum size of 1680x1050. I was unable to generate a 'good' xorg.conf file using 'X -configure' and as mentioned earlier, hwd would not work for me. I installed xf86-video-vmware and xf86-video-vesa as well as both open-vm-tools and normal vmware-tools (not at the same time or together) but can't seem to sort this issue. vmware-tools was able to generate a valid xorg.conf file but it only included a handful of 4:3 resolutions and some of these still showed 0hz. For some strange reason 'startx' and 'xinit' now do not work having failed to find /dev/fb0.
    VMware Tools
When I did try to install vmware-tools, it had many difficulties trying to build the modules - mostly regarding to not recognising __FREEBSD__, I cannot remember the complete error. I also tried to build open-vm-tools but that gave an error about not being able to find libproc even though I had procps installed. Stopping open-vm-tools on shutdown also always fails and occurs twice.
I'm going to try reinstalling now that I know a little more about what I did to get things working but if anyone could give me a hand it'd be much appreciated.

After a lot of experimentation I've got a satisfactory installation although a few minor problems remain:
Adjustments required to correctly run Alsa+Xorg in Arch Linux 2009.02 using VMware Workstation
The current kernel does not play nicely with alsa, downgrade to kernel26-2.6.29.4-1:
    wget http://www.schlunix.org/archlinux/core/ … pkg.tar.gz
    pacman -U kernel26-2.6.29.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
    Install/Upgrade dbus:
    pacman -Sy dbus
Add hal (if it's not installed then make sure to do so) to your daemons located in /etc/rc.conf, e.g.
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond hal)
The current open-vm-tools-modules is not compatible with the older kernel, instead use open-vm-tools-modules-2009.04.23-1:
    wget http://www.schlunix.org/archlinux/commu … pkg.tar.gz
    pacman -U open-vm-tools-modules-2009.04.23-1
The installation will prompt you with an error that /etc/modprobe.conf could not be found (as does the current version), add the following to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf:
    install pcnet32 /sbin/modprobe -q --ignore-install vmxnet; /sbin/modprobe -q --ignore-install pcnet 32 ; /bin/true;
    You can now install open-vm-tools:
    pacman -S open-vm-tools
To autoload open-vm-tools on start up you need to add it to your daemons located in /etc/rc.conf, e.g.
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond hal open-vm-tools)
Add vmware-user to your /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file if you desire (for seamless mouse and display switching), e.g. my xinitrc with xfce4 ends with:
    vmware-user &
    exec startxfce4
    Install the following components: xf86-video-vmware xf86-video-vesa xf86-input-vmmouse xf86-input-mouse:
(You will not be able to start x if you have installed xf86-video-fbdev and do not have a valid xorg.conf file, this is addressed later)
    pacman -S xf86-video-vmware xf86-video-vesa xf86-input-vmmouse xf86-input-mouse
Lastly we need to edit/create the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to use our vmware drivers, this will enable automatic resolution switching and seamless mouse functionality:
(All of the following is necessary otherwise X will ignore our vmware drivers)
    Section "ServerFlags"
        Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"
    EndSection
    Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "VMware Mouse"
        Driver      "vmmouse"
        Option "Protocol"         "ps/2"
        Option "Device"           "/dev/input/mice"
        Option "ZAxisMapping"     "4 5"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons"  "true"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
        Identifier  "VMware SVGA"
        Driver      "vmware"
    EndSection
    Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier  "VMware Config"
        InputDevice "VMware Mouse" "CorePointer"
    EndSection
    Issues
    * open-vm-tools fails to stop during a shutdown or /etc/rc.d/open-vm-tools stop/restart
    * most screen resolutions show 0Hz (although everything works correctly) and adding VertRefresh to xorg.conf produces a major error
    * playback of flash video produces a sound artefact when starting - although I think this may be to do with the decoder rather than system
I've marked this as solved although I welcome any suggestions regarding these minor issues. The open-vm-tools one I can probably sort out but it's too late now to look into tonight

  • Has anyone else noticed an issue with the new mail icon on the lock screen?

After updating to iOS 8 there is a new mail icon on the lock screen. When I slide it up I get this message:
"Failed to continue activity- the connection to your other device may have been interrupted- Please try again"
After trying again and again I get the same message and I do not have the "other device" that it mentions. I'm not sure what is going on, does anyone have any ideas?

Nope, have not seen this issue or have this issue myself.  Try going into Settings and toggling off that email account, toggle back on and then send a test email to yourself.  If it still persists, delete the email account and re-add and try again.

    Hello OMGitsUGOD,
i run into the same problems with my t420s, at least problems 2 and 3. I did not try to use optimus or discrete graphics settings in BIOS. I think there is something in the wiki about this, maybe you should take a look at that? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Le … IA-Optimus

  • Issues with lenovo t420s

I have three issues with my lenovo t420s, they might be related but I'm just not smart enough to fix them.
1:By default the bios is set to using optimus, and if I leave it at that x starts up all right but I don't think it is using the discrete graphics card at all? If I change the bios to use discrete graphics X fails with message "no screen found". I have seen this is an issue with optimus-laptops but I have also seen reports of getting it to boot of the discrete graphics card. So my question is simply, should it be possible to boot it of the discrete graphics card? (I have tried using both nouveau and proprietary drivers).
2: It doesn't see my display port connection. Running xrandr just shows LVDS and VGA connection, shouldn't the display port show up as well? On a side note up unitl yesterday xrandr responded with LVDS1 and VGA1, but after updating to 3.2 kernel it now responds with LVDS2 and VGA2?
3: Sometimes when I boot it thinks the vga is connected and boots with the wrong resolution. Running xrandr VGA says connected even though no cable is connected, running  xrandr --output VGA1 --off --output LVDS1 --auto (or VGA2 and LVDS2 as of yesterday) fixes the issue.
    Regards

  • Power on-Power off issues with X200

I am having power up and power down issues with my Lenovo X200.
Prior to the immediate problem, I would experience occasional unexpected shutdown of the computer (I would hear a relay click when it happened), and on some occasions when I put it into hibernation, then power it back up later it would not resume, instead, it would restart with a new session of Windows.
About a month ago, it shut down while I was using it.  I powered it back on, but it took a long time (nearly a minute) to get the “ThinkPad” initial boot screen, then the screen would be blank for about a minute, then I would get a screen that read, “Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension v 4.0.4.0007” and also “M.E Initializing……”   That screen would show for about a minute, then I got another screen reading “Security chip is generating endorsement key pair.  Please wait.”  That screen would show for about 5 minutes, then it would read, “Generation failed!!!” for about 5 seconds.  After that, it would boot to Windows (I am using Windows 7 Professional).
When I would shut it down, either in hibernate mode or full shutdown, after the hard drive icon stopped flashing (indicating it had shut down), the power icon, battery icon would stay on, and the “sleep” icon would flash.  I would have to hold the power button down to turn those icons off; if I failed to do that the power would stay on until the battery completely drained.
I read something about the “Security chip is generating endorsement key pair” message so I went into BIOS and changed the security chip from “Active” to “Inactive”.  However, when I would start the computer with the chip “inactive”, it would go first to the initial boot screen, then to the “M.E. Initializing” message, then the screen would go blank and remain blank, not ever booting to Windows.  So I went back to BIOS and changed the security chip to “Disabled”.  With it disabled, it will boot up, but still is very slow booting and I still get that “M.E. Intializing” message for about a minute, and also I still have to hold the power button down to power down the computer after I shut it down (or hibernate) with Windows.
The good news is that, after this started happening, I have not encountered an unexpected shutdown nor has it failed to resume the previous windows session if I hibernate it.
Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for your help.

The difference may be that the G5 iMac bus (where your fire wire plugs into the back) is a powered bus. What this means is the LaCie drive will "sense" the power from the bus and not turn off. The power it gets from the fire wire bus however may (is) not be enough to actually operate it, only leave it on. You still need to the drive into a power outlet.
In the LaCie manual (CD that comes with drive) and the FAQ section of LaCie's web page it states this as well.
What I do is manually turn the drive on when needed (performing back up or for scheduled back up). The LaCie drive should be quiet when not in use as it has no fan.
PS - try SuperDuper for backups, much better (IMHO) than Silverkeeper.

    Hi Mohammad Taha,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that you are having screen resolution issues with your Lenovo Yoga 13.
I would suggest you to uninstall the video drivers (Integrated as well as discrete) and reinstall the latest ones. Go to display setting in control panel and set the font size to smaller (default). Try changing the refresh rate and set it to 60Hz in graphic properties.
Refer this knowledgebase to understand how to setup the best display.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • P35 Neo2-FR issues with Pioneer DVR-212 SATA ODD on Intel ICH9R

I need some help here, guys, as I am having weirdest issues with Pioneer DVR-212 on my mobo. Everything else is working fine - 4GB Geil DDRII 800, C2D 4600, P35 Neo2-FR, stock settings. I allready updated the bios to the lates revision - 1.8 and drive's firmware to 1.24 - and it does not help.
Basically, drive just locks up and stops responding during writing or even reading a DVD when it's connected to Intel SATA. Tried ImgBurn, Nero, InfraRecorder - same issue happens in Linux, too. When connected to Marvell SATA port - drive behave better and at least this lock up issues stop.
Drive is currently connected to SATA 5 port (1 and 2 are ESATA, 3 and 4 are HDD's and they have 0 issues, 5 is burner - tested other ports and 6 is empty). Drive just stops to respond. In BIOS, Inte l controller is in AHCI mode, but I disabled the port on which Pioneer is - as I read that optical drives have issues with AHCI. Drive is visible in Vista (32 bit SP1) but locking issues happen all the time. Are there some known issues with my motherboard and it's SATA controler? Or issues with this particular drive? Or maybe issues with AHCI mode? I repeat, this lock up issues go away when I connect it to Marvel SATA port - although I don't have the feeling it's working properly, it appears to be working with almost zero issues. I had a lock even now, while writing this - on 32% on reading an image... The rig is prime stable 24h, and works without restarting for weeks. This is the only issue - no issues with hard drives (SEAGATE 320 Barracuda 7200.10 3320620AS and a Maxtor 160GB STM3160811AS). Any help or ideas appreciated!!!

    Yes - here are details...
    MSI P35 NEO2-FR v1.1 bios 1.8
Intel Core2Duo [email protected] - stock
    XFX Nvidia Geforce 8600gt
    GEIL Ultra 4x1 GB DDR800 - stock
    Seagate Barracuda 320GB ST3320620AS SATA
    Maxtor DiamondMax 160GB STM3160811AS SATA
    Pioneer DVR-212 SATA firmware 1.24
    Chieftec PSU 410W
    Cooler Master CM690 Case
    Windows Vista 32bit SP1 + Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit (with 2.6.25 hand compiled kernel)
What bugs me the most is that I can't find similar issues on the net - very, very few issues solved by setting the AHCI port to which burner is connnected to non-AHCI mode and that the optical drive behaves better when connected to Marvel SATA controller, rather then Intel SATA...
Issues repeats in Linux and in Windows...
    Any thoughts appreciated...

  • Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?
    Solved!

Whenever I connect to a wireless network with the network applet in the top right of the screen, it keeps "connecting" even though it has already connected. This does not happen when I disable WiFi and use the cable. The connected cable icon is show properly.

    I have disabled netctl
    $ sudo systemctl disable netctl
How can I make the applet show that the connection has been succesfully established?
Bonus question is that on Windows the laptop can run for hours, but in Arch it's drained considerably faster. I also have a Dell XPS L502x and since Linux was installed the battery died pretty quickly because it drained so fast and we had to charge it constantly. That laptop is left with a 15 minute charge at 100%. The new Lenovo somehow takes 3 hours to charge from 0 to 100% and drains in about the same time. The same applet in the top right also keeps saying "Estimating...". I have installed PowerTOP and ran a diagnostics. Is it save enough to apply everything suggested?

The Red cross usually appears when the battery has failed.
If you already tried the hard reset and the drivers update, then there doesn't seem to be much that you can do.
Get it repaired from Lenovo while you are still in warranty, that would be my suggestion.

  • GDM and Gnome graphical issues with Nvidia card

    Hi !
I want to install archlinux with cinnamon as desktop environment on the computer of a friend, but I have some issue with it, and especially with (I think) the graphic card, it's a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200LE.
I tried installing nvidia-173xx from the aur first. I installed gdm, but it's extremly slow, as a result that I can't log in (nevertheless the mouse is fluid..)  the cpu is not so much used yet, and it's the same thing in the cinnamon session or the gnome session (I tried installing lightdm to log in which works fine). Moreover, in the session I've got some strange graphical things, such as some missing white pixels, or a blue window when I launch nautilus, ... (here are some screenshots : http://i49.tinypic.com/2efhm6s.png and a with a window : http://i46.tinypic.com/116m05k.png)
I tried to install the nouveau driver instead, and now gdm don't freeze, I can log in, but there is always these strange graphical issues.
Is the graphic card too old for gnome ? Or did I forget something ?
Thank you in advance for your help !! And sorry for my english ..

I'm no expert on reading the xsession errors, but I had all sorts of problems running gnome3 with my machine of the same vintage.   Cinamon is based on gnome3.  I switched to Mate which is a re-packaging of the old gnome2 along with Compiz for the window manager and all works well.
I strongly suspect that they are using the newer OpenGL 4 API.  The Nvidia FX5200 is stuck at OpenGL 2.1.

  • Issues with Safari 3.0.1 for windows

Issues with Safari 3.0.1 for windows (at work):
Lenovo T60 with intel core duo T7200 @2.00Ghz plus additional monitor (Lenovo ThinkVision) in extended desktop mode running Windows XP Pro 2002, SP2
    1. Taskbar is configured to autohide: when Safari is the top (active) window, it remains on top. If the taskbar pops up, it does so behind the Safari window, because I cannot see it.
    2. If an open Safari window is dragged to the external (secondary) monitor, then maximized, it disappears to the side. It is not closed. I can still find it via Alt-tab or in the task bar and can, by right-clicking ‘Move’ from the taskbar use the arrow keys to move the window back into place. Clicking to reduce the window, then re-maximizing leads to the window disappearing to the side again.
    3. In general my impression is that this does not function at a ‘beta’ level, but more of an ‘alpha’ level. Still very buggy.

    iMacIntel Duo 2Gh   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1G-RAM, 250vRAM

This is a beta...thats why they give you the option to report probs via the bug icon. Since you are having these probs try and report them, I am not sure if apple has the time to scan these forums to try and find the big probs that people are having. So unless you report bugs, (and wait until the final realease) then they might never get noticed and or fixed.

  • Performance Issues with Photoshop CS6 64-Bit

    Hello -
Issue at hand: over the course of the last few weeks, I have noticed significant issues with performance since the last update to PS CS6 via the Adobe Application Manager, ranging from unexpected shut downs to bringing my workstation to a crawl (literally, my cursor seems to crawl across my displays). I'm curious as to if anyone else is experiencing these issues, or if there is a solution I have not yet tried. Here is a list of actions that result in these performance issues - there are likely more that I have either not experienced due to my frustration, or have not documented as occuring multiple times:
Opening files - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Pasting from clipboard - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Saving files - takes 3-10 seconds to open the dialog, another 3-10 seconds to return to normal window (saving a compressed PNG)
Eyedropper tool - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempting to navigate any menu - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempts I've taken to resolve this matter, which have failed:
Uninstalled all fonts that I have added since the last update (this was a pain in the ***, thank you Windows explorer for being glitchy)
    Uninstall application and reinstall application
    Use 32-bit edition
Changing process priority to Above Normal
Confirm process affinity to all available CPU cores
Change configuration of Photoshop performance options
61% of memory is available to Photoshop to use (8969 MB)
History states: 20; Cache levels: 6; Cache tile size: 1024K
Scratch disks: active on production SSD, ~10GB space available

  • Remote Desktop Connection problem with multiple Lenovo machines

    Hello,
I've been running into issues with connecting to some of the latest Lenovos we purchased using RDP. It has happened with a batch of 3 x220s and a batch of 2 Thinkstation C20s (possibly others that I haven't yet had to remote into).
The symptoms are maddening in the paucity of information given for the failure. It basically goes like this -- type in the name of the computer and hit connect. Immediately I get a "this computer can't connect to the remote computer"; it's so sudden that it seems to be getting rejected immediately. I've check every windows log (even the ones under Applications and Services) and the ONLY thing logged (on the destination computer) is that an RDP session was initiated. NO reason is given for the failure. No error event given.
Has anyone else run into this? I'm having to use 3rd party software to log in to computers, which is becomming a nuisance as I am trying to set up computers at a branch office for new users. Is there some way to debug RDP? I ran a packet sniffer and a total of 6 packets are passed for these "sessions" -- mostly TCP handshake packets at that, and only one actual RDP packet. Is there a more verbose log I should be looking at?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you can't connect to your new or restored Lenovo with the OEM install of Windows 7, it may very well be that the particular registry key below is not set to the typical default value (I think Lenovo has messed up their OEM install image). The two secrity packages 'tspkg' and 'pku2u' are missing on OEM Lenovo images.
    This registry key:
    HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa\security packages
    Should look like this:
kerberos msv1_0 schannel wdigest tspkg pku2u
Fix it and RDC will connect.
(may need a reboot to take effect)
