Issue with Connecting to Public Wifi

Hi All,
Really need some help. Recently purchased an iPad mini and I m having loads of problems connecting to public wifi. It connects fine to home wifi and my Iphone 4 connects to the public wifi. Been through all the searches on the Internet for a fix but really cannot understand why it will not connect. Basically I can the wifi network to show and then when I connect it just comes with a error message saying "hotspot login cannot open the page because it is not connected to the Internet". Have tried resets / setting changes etc - basically all the settings advice you find on the Internet and help desk on apple. The most frustrating thing is that I work in a place that sells iPad mini and we have a demo model for customers that connects without any problem ? Yet when I try stood next to it an iPad wont. I have tried other iPad mini and they come up with the same problem. Any help would be much appreciated !

• I have to turn off mobile data to connect to public wifi!?

I have found with my phone that to connect to public wifi in places such as my local bar or where I work, that I have to turn off mobile data in settings to connect to the wifi.
These are wifi hotspots where you have to create a free account to use them, and when you try to connect to them in wifi settings in iOS, when they connect, a little browser screen appears. If mobile data is turned off, then the broswer window will show a welcome screen or message saying connected (dpending on which spot Im connecting to), however if Data isn't turned off, the browser screen just does nothing or I get the apple.com screen with a small text message saying success, then disconnects me from the wifi!
It wasn't so much an issue before because, in wifi settings for each hotspot I had options for auto-login and auto-join which allowed me not to have to keep reconnecting, however since updating to iOS6, these have changed and its been a nightmare since. This is because these spots tend to kick you off after 20-30mins and then you have to reconnect (which you can understand having to turn off mobile data everytime to do so is annoying).
Ive noticed that my friends with other iphones, regardless of network, don't have to do this - so why is it an issue for me, or I was wondering if anybody else had the same problem or a fix/solution? And where did the auto-login option from the wifi settings go?

After much googling for the past few hours, I think I finally found the answer to my problem. Apparently if you have the Onavo app along with the profile it installs, that interferes with connecting to Cisco based wifi hotspots, and the only way around it is the method I used above by turning off mobile data!

https://getsatisfaction.com/onavo/topics/onavo_prevents_from_being_able_to_conne ct_to_public_wifi_hotspots_that_have_terms_of_use_agreements
I have uninstalled the app and profile, and will see if that fixes the issue tomorrow when Im at work

• TS1398 ipod wont connect to public wifi?

My iPod wont connect to public wifi, but it connects to my home wifi without a problem? how do i fix this??

I believe I may have solved this
When you can't log into public WiFi ...
with an iDevice…
because the Server times out ...
or the login/registration page just won't load ...
********Simply do this***********
Go into settings> WiFi and tap the little info icon for the network you are trying to join
If you see two slider buttons, these are the cause of your woes
One says "Auto Join" (or similar) - you can leave this ON
The second button is "Auto Login" - you must turn this OFF (slide it left so it is grey not green)
Now go back and reselect the network.
If the login page doesn't come up automatically, open a Safari window and enter any address
Bingo!
I have reproduced this issue and solution in 100% of the public WiFi spots which I could previously not access. Please not that I also have "Block Pop-Ups" turned OFF in Settings> Safari, though I do not know if this is a necessary step.
I have filed a bug report with Apple. Feel free to contact them yourselves if this workaround works for you.
Peace y'all

• New iPhones automatically connecting to public wifi

hi .. the family has 3 new devices (iPhone 5S) running 7.0.4 all connected to my Apple ID
I set up the iPhone in a bar in London then I connected it to a different wifi network in a nearby restaurant .. neither wifi spots required a password
but I see the other two devices the next day automatically connected to these wifi networks without me doing anything - what a great feature !
have iPhones always been able to do this ? did it recognise my Apple ID and assumed I would want to connect to wifi on the other 2 new devices ?
I have been using iPhones since 2008 and never before witnessed this .. is this a new feature or a bit of luck ?

completely agree ..
of course it was and I think even an apple novice would know this ..
due to apple products significantly benefiting my businesses over the last two decades I have in some ways become a bit of an apple nerd, and when I notice helpful improvements in the operating system (particularly business related) i research them..
this is one of the rare occasions where I cannot get any official clarification as to what apple did in ios7 to make 'joining trusted public wifi spots easier'
1) every year I buy a bundle of new iPhones for work and family and noticed this time they all automatically connected to known networks faster and more consistently than in previous years;
2) google this topic and lots of sites say the same thing i.e. iOS 7 improved something with connecting to "trusted" wifi spots;
3) i asked in store and staff confirmed this but had no further details;
4) scan all Apple's official pages and no more detail !
5) SO ARE THERE ANY NERDS OUT THERE THAT CAN PUT MY MIND AT EASE
HOW DID ISO7 CHANGE THE WAY DEVICES JOIN TRUSTED WIFI NETWORKS ??? APPLE ARE NORMALLY PROUD TO TO HIGHLIGHT AND EXPLAIN IMPROVEMENTS
WAS IT PURELY AN IOS7 SOFTWARE IMPROVEMENT OR DOES HAVING THE LATEST HARDWARE (5S & AIR) HELP ?!

• Apple iphone 5 and 4 not connecting to public wifi

Have the wife's iphone 4 on 6.1.3 and mine iphone 5 6.1.2 that won't connect to public wifi. It connects at home no problem. When it connects to public wifi and requires some sort of user agreement or authentic, the next page or safari doesn't come up. Anyone else come across this. Thanks in advance

At the home network it is self secured with a password so it does not require any kind of additional settings...but in case of a public network many a times it is possible to have manual HTTP Proxy settings..
- First when you turn on your wifi in your mobile..it catches up the nearby singnals and shows u the networks available
- now when u join them by tapping on the network...if it is succesfully connected then it shows u a TIC mark in front of the network name...
- now on the same network name u can see a small arrow icon beside it which is blue in colour...
- tap on that and then scroll down..u can see a option HTTP Proxy
- there tap on the manual option and then add the respective port and server ...they sholud be in the form
(server- xxx.xxx.xx.xx port- xxxx ). where x-number digit.
- you should be getting this info of the server and port from the network manager..ask him and then add them...
- authentication is required for secured networks..i.e if the networks have a username and password...
if this doesnt work in the first attempt then try and do a RESET of ur phone and try the above again.. u will not loose any data..so do not worry..here is how you do a reset...
- hold the power off button and homescreen button together simultaneously for about ten seconds ..hold till u see a apple logo on ur screen and then leave them...it will switch on automatically...
hope that this will help you...reply if you need any more help....happy to help...........

• Problem with connecting to free wifi after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8

Hi
I had problems with connecting to free Wifi after upgrading my PC(Notebook) to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8. As I travel a lot within europe, I am used to being able to connect to Free Wifi(those that dont need a key or password to enter) but soon after downloading
Windows 8.1 I almost never was able to do this. I'd always get «LIMITED» even though the signal was strong. This was so fustrating,so much so that I reset my PC to clear it of Windows 8.1 and am now back to Windows 8.This is a shame because I was really liking
using Windows 8.1 and if not for this problem(which is a big one) I'd still be using it. If I download Windows 8.1 again from the Windows store what is the probability that I'll have the same problems?
Thanks Portozzygirl

More often than not when a device isn't working it is because the driver has become corrupted. Re-installing a fresh copy should help

• I'm having issues with connecting my iPhone 4 to iTunes?

Here's some information:
Apple product: iPhone 4
Computer: Windows 8 (originally) to Windows 8.1 (upgraded version)
Okay, I'm having issues with connecting my iPhone 4 to iTunes. I've connected it via U.S.B. and now everything's not working right the 10th time. Am I to redownload the iTunes software once again or will I never be able to add music anymore?

Close any open applications.
Click the Apple icon top left of the screen.
Select the bottom option in the cascading menu: Log Out (your user name).
Log in a Guest.
This will dertermine if there is a problem with your Admin account.

I have contacted apple via email and tried all the steps they have recommended and it is still not working.
I have tried disabling my McAfee and that does not work either.
Anyone that the phone number to apple express so I don't have to keep waiting for them to email within 48 hours?
Thanks.

With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

• MBP will not connect to public WiFi site, iPhone does with no problems.

My MacBook Pro (late 2010), refuses to connect to many Public WiFi networks. However, my iPhone has no issues. Typically, I will be in a coffee shop or airport lounge. I'll take out my iPhone and launch Safari. Safari will try for a second or two to connect, and then a "Login" page will pop up. Usually it is simply a request to accept the Terms & Conditions for the access provider. Tick the "I Accept" box and continue. Same location, using my MBP, I launch Safari and Safari tries to connect and does nothing. Spinning Beach Ball. I do not get the "Accept" page with the Terms & Conditions. Any ideas why this works with the iPhone and not the MBP? This is a chronic problem for me and I'm getting tired of it. Thanks for any assistance.

Can you get the settings you have on your Realtek® 802.11b/g wireless LAN.
You can get to these properties by following instructions:
CONTROL PANEL / NETWORKING AND SHARING CENTER
CLICK TO OPEN
ON LEFT CLICK CHANGE ADAPTER SETTINGS
SELECT ADAPTER
RIGHT CLICK
SELECT PROPERTIES
FROM HERE :
CLICK CONFIGURE
SELECT ADVANCED;
HERE WE NEED YOU TO POST BACK ALL OF THE PROPERTIES AND THEIR VALUES (VERY IMPORTANT) YOU HAVE SET HERE.
ONCE DONE IMPORTANT CANCEL ALL THE WAY OUT DO NOT CLICK OK
If you could get the Router Model number it would be helpful also.
Once you have posted your results, we should be able to help answer your question.

• Issue when travelling Europe and connecting to public WiFi networks

I often have an issue when travelling in Europe and go to an Internet café with my iPhone.
I enter all the info and in wifi settings the network is ticked to say connected. The wifi icon is also visible in menu bar but whenever I try to connect I get a message that page is not available or to check settings.
Can't see anything wrong and settings are as they normal are when connecting to wifi at home in UK.
I also get this when connecting to free public wifi even when it requires no password
Any ideas why this may be? Travelling this weekend and am sure this will be an issue whilst away so would like to get to bottom of it.

Thanks for the suggestion but that is not practical once I arrive to Spain.
Will not be taking a Mac to restore from if there is an issue.
Restore network settings is worth looking at but full restore of iPhone is out of the question. Just wondered if this is a known issue with a simple fix.
All seems a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut ;-)

• Why am I unable to connect to Public WiFi HotSpots?

My MacBook Pro (late 2010), refuses to connect to most Public WiFi networks. Sounds to me like a Security or "Re direct" Issue. Any ideas why this works with the iPhone and not the MBP? This is a chronic problem for me and I'm getting tired of it. Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for the suggestion. What you suggest is not the issue. Network Preferences says Airport is Connected and I have an IP Address. Safari picks up the redirect URL but will not display the page. Workaround is to launch another browser, (I use Firefox). Then the Login Page displays correctly. Once logged in using Firefox, I can then launch Safari and all is good. This technique works most of the time. However, there are some sites where the same problem happens with Firefox or any other browser I try. Workaround is to restart in Bootcamp (Windows 7 & IE). This is just not right! I don't seem to be getting many responses so this is likely not a wide spread issue and may perhaps be due to something peculiar to my system.

• Issues with connection to Officejet Pro 8500

Hi folks,
I have a user at home with a Officejet 8500 connected to a BT home hub via wifi. it worked initially when we set it up a few months back however rarely and intermitantly since then. It notmally shows as offline in print properties and the HP app cant connect to it.
Some network basics
Router IP: 192.168.1.254
Printer IP: 192.168.1.66 (via DHCP)
Alt Printer IP: 192.168.1.100 (Static IP Attempt with no joy)
Other devices in network:
Desktop pc (Not work kit)
Iphone (his wifes)
Laptop PC (work kit)
We do have him connected via VPN however Im inclined not to believe that its aproblem witht hat as we have a dozen users with the same setup and the VPN dosent cause them headaces.
Pining the hostname of the printer results in a weird IP external IP address (87.239.20.209) not the local one. Ok so I put a change in the hostfile to point to the Printers IP. No joy there.
Tried a static IP.... you know just cos... (and in my mind best practice for a printer anyway!)
So Any ideas or any one experianced similar issues with this?
Cheers in advanced folks

We have been having offline issues with this same printer. I have tried to install all new software to a Win 7 64 bit computer but the full software cannot complete. It detects the printer on the network, goes through the network settings but when it gets to Installing Your Printer, it fails with this statement: 'Printer setup has failed to complete. Click retry to try installing the printer again or click next to continue installation without connecting to the printer now.'
Now, I am connected via the web to the printer and all is well on the status screen. I have updated the firmware too. I read through many blogs of others having the same issue with no real resolution. All those that were connected to it are now showing 'offline' even though they can ping it and access it directly on the web - but none can print. I have tried downloading and installing the HP Print and Scan Doctor but it needs the 'full' software installed in order to run.....but the full software cannot complete it's install because of the above.
I have always loved HP printers but this one deserves to be in the land fill!

• Using Airport for office network and still connect to public wifi

HI
I work in the public sector and we have open public wifi network that we can connect to, but have no control over and would never be given no access by our service user. we are a small sub contractor in a office tucked away.
We have 3 Macs and 2 wifi printers and several iPhones and iPads, our thought was to link them all and create a mini local network using the Airport extreme but still stay connected to the Wifi. as the only other option would be a 4G router but that is hit and miss with the connection.
After much stubbornness on my behalf i can not seem to fathom a way round this problem, is there a solution with the devices we have
Ian

No we can't get access from the company we work for they let us have wifi access only with no controls.
and the building has no phone access as we are in the middle of a hospital.
the office has all its devices and printers that we can't link but separately we can connect to the guest wifi

• Suddenly can't connect to public wifi

I've been away from home for several weeks and have been using the hotel public wifi with no problems. A few days ago my ipod crashed and since rebooting and restarting I cannot connect to the hotel's public wifi. It connects briefly and then disconnects when the login screen appears. Tried Starbucks today and it does the same thing. It connects fine to the wifi at work which has a WEP key and using a proxy server.
This is a real bummer as I am still away from home for a few more weeks. I've tried reseting network settings but to no avail.
Any suggestions would be great.

I would try these few things with the hotel WiFi:
1. Renew lease - when it appears to be connected, tap the blue > net to the network name and then tap "Renew lease".
2. Turn WiFi off - tap Settings > WiFi > off. Wait a bit and then turn WiFi back on.
3. And finally, reset your network settings, the log onto the hotel network by tapping Settings > WiFi > Other and re-entering the hotel's network name (SSID). You should not be prompted for security or a password. OS 3.x should pop-up login screen for you. If not, use Safari and a page refresh to get the screen.
