Issue with importing MXF files - Canon

The issue is, when importing MXF files from a Canon camera, we experience "spanned" files. This has been occuring now for sometime. Why has Adobe not fixed this. Surely there is a large community using Canon MXF files? Can someone from Adobe or Canon reply to this message. If anyone else has a fix or a workaround other than mannually addressing this, please advise.

I'm afraid I don't understand the question.
7.2 now correctly parses the Canon XF .CIF sidecar files to determine whether the media is supposed to be spanned or not.  This has been a feature request that has been finally addressed to work correctly.
(It also was there in 7.1 & previous, but had limitations:  the performance wasn't as good, there had been issues in the past with audio pops at cut points, and it required that the Canon XF folder structure remain intact, ie if you copied the media to a flattened folder structure, it would fail to do the spanning correctly.)
If you are looking for a means to disable the automatic spanning, simply removing the .CIF files will achieve that.  Although i'm not sure I understand why you're looking to do that.  Most people *want* spanning to happen automatically, otherwise you're forced to manually sync spanned media segments by hand.

  • Can't import mxf-files (Canon XF100) into FCP 10.0.8 after Mavericks

    Hello
It's not possible for me, to import mxf-files into FCP.
I haven't yoused FCP for a couple of days, but today I could not import files from my Canon XF100, so i think the problems came with Mavericks??
Does any of you have same problems?
    What to do?
    Kind regards
    Thomas (Denmark)

    Hi Russ -
I downloaded the utility and driver from here:
    http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/blogs/2012/20120223_xf_utilities_and_pl ugin_updates.shtml
But after looking around realized it isn't updated for Mavericks yet. I was only given two files and both weren't in any sort of directory structure- here is a screenshot.
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Hard drive performance issue with DPX & MXF files

    Hi everyone,
I spent hours on this forum reading articles about hardware to use for editing large files. I also have to admit, that I made some cut backs due to budge limitations.
I spent most of the money on CPU, motherboard, & ram (6 core  32 gigs , hell of nice MB)  ( Video card= gtx 760 2 gig  )So ok,  I cheaped out on the hard drives. (I think)
I put (2) 7200 rpm  drives (raid 0) as my Operating  system
    (1) External  8TB RAID  G drive (USB 3.0 ) as my Media drive. (footage)
    (2) 7200 drives (Raid 0)  as my Cache Drive
I then opened up an OLD project using canon 5D footage (h264 mov) and some DPX sequence files.
The 5D fooatge played in real time BUT as soon as it ran into the DPX sequence, the frames dropped.
I wanted to cry. I just spent 1,600.00 on  parts (&3000.00 pc retail if I bought it instead of building it)
And I got the same performance as my old quad core 6600/ 6 ram system. WHAT GIVES????
So, can someone recommend the cheapest workaround that can get me editing in realtime?
Do you think it's the 3.0 usb connection?
The footage I will be editing will be from the canon c300 (MXF files)
My fear is, if I am dropping frames with DPX file, what's going to happen when I get the MXF files?
    Fun Facts:
I tested my OS drives, cache & media, and I was getting 290-301mb/sec  READ SPEEDS
    Thanks in advance !

    Loucann,
I do not have the data on a three drive RAID 0 but here is a two drive RAID 0 with good Seagate ST2000DM001 drives.  I have to say "good" because there have been two varieties available, some with two platters and some with three platters.  The preferable are with two platters and my experience shows these drive to have an "E" in the third character of the Serial Number like Z1E1ME4V  They are slightly faster than the three platter versions.  Here is the HD Tune Read of the two better ST2000DM001 drives in RAID 0 on my system.
The best connection is to have all three on a RAIDable Intel SATA III connection but I am doubtfull if this can be accomplished on many motherboards, maybe Eric can comment and enlighten us.

What motherboard do you have?  I guess from the info above it is a socket 2011.

  • A strange issue with importing avi video

I have a rather strange issue with importing avi files (which playback normally in other programs) into CS4. When I import an avi recorded from my camera into CS 4 in the preview the sound is played back normally, but the video itself is weird. Pretty much roughly first 5% of it are stretched over the whole spand and slowed down to fit. So the video of 4 minutes will play sound normally for 4 minutes, but replay only 10 seconds of video VERY slowly. I'm a bit puzzled because I've used the same camera with CS3 and never encountered this problem. breaking apart and speeding up the video obviously didn't work because the video only displays the first 5 recorded seconds no matter the speed, tweaking with presets didn't work either.

  • How to import MXF files to Final Cut Pro with smooth editing

Summary: Follow this tutorial to learn how to import and edit MXF files in Final Cut Pro by converting MTS to FCP native format.
If you have a Panasonic P2, Canon XF or Sony XDCAM series camcorder,
you may be familiar with Material eXchange Format (MXF). Though MXF is a
great video format to record high-definition videos, it is not easy to
use in that they are not natively supported by most NLE systems like
Final Cut Pro. In order to import MXF to FCP for editing, the easy workaround is to transcode MXF files to FCP compatible video formats.
Along with some help from a top MXF Converter, it can be done. To
help those who wanna edit MXF files in FCP without problems, here I
share with you a simple guide on how to convert MXF files to edit in
Final Cut Pro 6/7 or FCP X.
First of all, downloading the App- Brorsoft MXF Converter for Mac
Overall, the program is a professional yet easy-to-use MXF Converter
on Mac (Mavericks included) which can not only convert XF100, Canon
C300, XF105 and XF305, Panasonic P2 recorded MXF files, but also provide
simple video editing functions for you. The MXF to FCP Converter not
only can convert MXF to ProRes for FCP, but also can transcode MXF
videos for editing in Avid MC, Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, FCE, etc.
Just download it and follow the tutorial below to get the work done.
Transcoding (P2) MXF files to ProRes for Final Cut Pro 6/7/X
    1. Import MXF files to the converter
Launch the best MXF to FCP Converter, and then click the “add files” button to browse and import MXF videos from your camcorder or hard drive.
    2. Select FCP editable format
Click the Format bar, and move mouse cursor to choose “Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)” as output format.
    Tips:
    a. Settings- click to set video
    resolution(1920×1080/1440×1080/1280×720/720×480), bitrate (from 1Mbps to
    20Mbps), frame rate (24p/30p)
    b. Editor (next to “Add” icon)- click to set deinterlace, trim, crop, add effect, attach subtitles, etc
    3. Start transcoding MXF video to FCP
Click “Convert” button to start converting MXF files to Apple ProRes
MOV for FCP 6/7/X under Mac OS. Once the MXF to ProRes 422 conversion
is done, you can transfer MXF footage into Final Cut Pro (X) for editing
    smoothly on Mac with ease.

  • Media Encoder won't import MXF files from Canon XF100

I'm running Media Encoder CC on two laptops: a macbook pro and a macbook air. Both systems are running the most recent version of Media Encoder CC (including updates) but only one will import MXF files from a Canon XF100? The macbook air imports and encodes the files without issue, however the macbook pro won't import the same MXF files and kicks the following error:
The file /Users/.../.../.../AA0106.MXF could not be imported. Could not read from source. Please check the settings and try again.
I could understand if both computers errored but using the same file, one will import and the other will not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just try this and see if it will work for you.
Open iPhoto > Preferences > General and deselect 'Connecting camera opens: iPhoto'.
Change it to 'No Application' and close iPhoto.
Now connect your camera to your computer and turn it on or better still use a card reader.
If iMovie tries to open, close it.
Your camera/card should now appear as an external drive.
Copy/paste your video files into a new folder on your desktop.
    Eject and disconnect your camera/card.
Now open iMovie and go File > Import > Movies... and navigate to that folder.
    Z.

  • Recently upgraded to a Canon Mark 3 and now having issues with my RAW files in Bridge and Photoshop. I am operating with CS4. Photoshop produces an error " Could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file"

Recently upgraded to a Canon Mark 3 and now having issues with my RAW files in Bridge and Photoshop. I have operating with CS4. Photoshop produces and error " Could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file"

Assuming you mean 5D Mark III, Photoshop CS4 cannot directly open raw files from your camera.
Generally speaking, Adobe stopped updating older versions to be able to read raw files from newer cameras when they released a new major version of Photoshop. Photoshop CS4 is no longer receiving Camera Raw updates.
You can double check this yourself:
First you need to determine whether Adobe has released support for your new camera in your version of Photoshop. To do that, look at these two pages. You'll want to find out the earliest version of Camera Raw that can support your camera, then what version of Photoshop can run that version of Camera Raw.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
If you find your camera is supported by your version of Photoshop, you need to download the latest update for Camera Raw. There's more information on how to do that here:
    Keeping Photoshop Up-To-Date
If your version of Photoshop cannot support your camera, you can download and install the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter, which can take your raw files as input and put out DNG format files, which your version of Photoshop can open.
Photoshop Help | Digital Negative (DNG)
The DNG converter DOES work, but if you want maximal quality from your raw files (not to mention the convenience and ease of use of directly opening your raw files) you'll want the latest version of Photoshop. Adobe has made substantial improvements in raw conversion quality in recent years.

    Russ and Luis,
I did uninstall and re-install Canon XF Utility and the Canon FCPX plug in.   Still no luck.  I checked the CanonXF64.RADPlug folder is on my computer in the Rad Plugins folder in application support  This is where it is supposed to be as far as I can figure out.
Another piece of the puzzle is that  footage shot on a Canon C300 in 2013 and  I reimported today and it DOES import into FCP10.1.3.   Footage shot on a different Canon C300 filmed this summer will NOT import into FCPX.  The latter will import into Premiere. But I am trying to work in FCPX, but maybe I shouldn’t be??
    Any ideas?  (screen shots below)
    Thanks.
    Peace, Huey
FYI Here is what Canon says
"There is another trick that works sometimes though.  Try uninstalling the plugin and XF Utility.  Then, install the latest XF Utility, followed by the plugin, in that order."
I did do this but no results.  Otherwise they say I need to wait for a new plugin.
Here's 2014 Canon C300 files does NOT import to FCPX
Here's 2013 Canon C300 files does import into FCPX.  I thought it was Contents folder but another set of footage shot on C300 does import and there is no contents folder for that.

  • PP CS6 give "general error" when importing MXF files

    Hi there,
I'm a videographer at a school and they recently purchased CS6 for me to use to edit footage. I shoot on a Sony PXW-X70.
However, anytime I attempt to import using Media Browser (or the input feature) any files from the camera, PP gives me an error (seen below).
The camera outputs XAVC files wrapped as MXF. I've tried importing files from this camera as well as from a Sony F5 and both sets of files don't work. I got the F5 files to import, but they don't play. However, I have also tried importing footage from a Canon XA10 and they did import correctly. So, it clearly has something to do with these MXF files.
I also downloaded a trial of PP CC and it imported the MXF's no problem. Adobe's literature seems to say that CS6 should import the MXFs without a problem.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi Brian,
    Thanks, Kevin.
Interestingly I tried a live chat with Adobe and they definitely told me the support cycle ended for CS6 and I'd basically have to ask a question on the forums here. But I'll try again and say it's an installation issue.
I'll let you know how it goes!
Yeah, you have to be very literal about it being an installation issue. If you still get the runaround, let me know and I'll have an agent contact you.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Can not import MXF files into Final Cut Pro

I am full of anger and frustration!!! I purchased final cut pro only to find out that it WILL NOT import MXF files. How insane is that? ADOBE - NO PROBLEM. Then I had to go back to YOUR STORE and buy two different file converter applications before I found one that worked. Now FINAL CUT PRO will only import the audio segment of converted files after converting to PRORES in PAVTUBE. Are you BUCKING kidding me? This work flow BLOWS. Why the FELL does this have to be sooooo hard!  I am gone to creative cow and other forums to try to find out why I am sooo stupid that I can't get this simple process sorted out. YOU BUCKING MONEY MACHINE! How many more aps will I have to buy before I can edit CANON XF100 files in Final Cut Pro. BUCK politics! You should make your software with plugins that would allow you to edit without this kind of added step. JUST LIKE ADOBE. I want refunds for my final cut pro purchase. This is BUCKING rediculous. What a waste of time!

Good thing I still have an iMac on Snow Leopard with FCP7 where I can import these files.  I was hoping to upgrade that system next month when the new iMac comes out
There is definite upside to dragging one's feet on upgrades until necessary and this is a prime example. On a desktop running 10.6, and the XF Utility, FCP 7 L&T works reliably. And like you, that's my workflow for FCPX projects. Running 10,7 on a laptop, the EOS plug-in works well for FCPX imports – no workarounds needed. When I finally get around to updating, I will partition the HD, with one SL partition and the other partition with a later OS. Of course this strategy will work only as long as my hardware holds up.

  • Trouble importing MXF files into Premiere Pro CC

When importing MXF files into Premier Pro (CC or CS6) from a Canon C300, If I have stopped and started the Camera (during an interview for instance) ie, if there are several takes, multiple duplicate verions of my fooatge appear in the folder on my card, when viewed through the media browser in Premier Pro.
If I try to ingest the footage into Premiere Pro (CC/CS6) or use Prelude (CC/CS6) the conformed footage file does not start in the right place. Example, an interview with two takes once ingested (as one file) has the second take first.
    Has anybody else encountered this?

Yes, MXF should play perfectly in PP CS6, but if you can't work this out at this point, you may wrap your MXF video to something intermediate. as a matter of face, Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 seems to work fine if you import your MXF clips directly from a camera or camcorder, but if have already copied MXF recordings your HDD or you downloaded them from somewhere else, the import error may occur.
So i suggest you convert the MXF footage to something mezzanine we would recommend DNxHD.mov (if you are on a PC) or Apple ProRes .mov (if on a mac). those two intermediate codecs are good mezzanine codecs that handle recompression well and standup well in other areas of post-production (color grading, graphics, compositing, etc,). You can see what I wrote about the solution. "Why Premiere Pro CS6 can't import MXF files?" i hope that it is helpful to you.

  • 10.0.6 now can import MXF files.  But how??

We have a Canon XF300 which shoots MXF files.  Up until now, we "Log and Transfer" and FCP rewraps the .mxf to be .mov files.
    Everything works perfectly!
But I see now that 10.0.6 can work directly with these MXF files with no need to rewrap, allowing us to NOT have to rewrap to .mov  (with a 3rd party plugin?)
BUt how do I do it?  I put the original (from the camera) CONTENTS folder (the camera's original media) on the desktop - but when I Log & Transfer, or import the media - it's still converting to .MOV!
What am I missing here - I feel like I ought to know this!
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Hi Tom,
Nice hearing from you.  Are you saying we would need to get 1 of the above 2 software programs?  Spending $250 to allow us to do what 10.0.6 says we can do?
Well what did Apple do??  Sounds like the 2 software companies above are "doing" it? I thought (obviously I'm WRONG!  . . . that 10.0.6 allows direct mxf import without rewrapping.
So in order to take advantage of the direct MXF import (that 10.0.6 allows), we need to buy software for $250 and up??  I just want to make sure I'm understanding this?  Thanks very much for your input.
    Larry
    Thanks very much.

  • FAQ: How do I troubleshoot audio issues when importing .MTS files?

Hello.   The link FAQ: How do I troubleshoot audio issues when importing .MTS files?
does not work, and i need the answer please. My imported MTS clips are not playing back audio because it seems that no audio imported with the video.   Thanks, Don.

    Hi there
Audio plays when the object with the audio assigned appears. This is why you hear it when the Button appears.
Try assigning the audio instead to the object that appears when you click the button. Perhaps the caption.

  • Issues with importing from excel

I have been running into a several issues with importing from Excel.
    First my configuration
I am running SQL Developer ver 1.5.5 Build MAIN-5969
I am on a Windows XP Professional Version 2002 with Service Pack 3
I am importing into an Oracle 10g database.
    1. SQL Developer doesn't work on Excel 2007, I have to save all my files into Excel 97-2003 format before I can use them.
    2. If I run into an error loading and stop the process, SQL Developer doesn't release the Excel file and I get a sharing violation if I try to save the spreadsheet without closing SQL Developer.
    3. I have found that I have to set print area to the area I want to work with, otherwise the import wizard tries to keep adding rows.
    4. When using the Import wizard, it keeps adding commas on fields with numerics unless I specify the column in excel as text. Currently the column is formatted as General in the spreadsheet or I can change the wizard format to say the column is an integer, but it actually is just a code field with numeric characters so it may have leading zeroes that I need to keep.
    This might be related,
I have a column in excel defined as text but only contains numerics. It is of length 4, but the wizard sets a precision of 5 with a datatype of VARCHAR2. If I try to change it to 4, I get an error saying the field is not large enough. Yet, when I do a LEN on the column, it only gives me a 4. I have other fields in the same sheet that a 3 position numeric and 2 position numeric and those are fine. I am thinking this is related to the comma being inserted in a numeric field for anything greater than 3 positions.
    5. Importing excel dates to oracle dates doesn't work. I have to convert the excel date column to text then import as a VARCHAR, then convert to Date once in the database.
    6. The default of nullible is not set on any columns and I have to set them before the import. (I would prefer it set to nullible and I have to uncheck the box to make it not nullible. I would prefer to import all of the data and then deal with the nulls after they have been pulled in)
    7. When I select header columns included it uses that as the column names. Is it possible to do the name length check then? It has bit me a few times where I try to import and forget to check the name length and then I get an error when I start running the import.
    8. If one of the columns to import has all nulls, then the precision comes out to 0 and if it isn't changed an error occurs on import. Could this situation default to a precision of 1?
    9. It would be nice if there was a completion message displayed and a cancel option while running.

    On point 3.
I have a column in excel that consists of numbers. 4 digit numeric codes. Ex, 1111, 2345, etc
The column's format is general. It displays as just 4 numbers.
When I start the wizard initially, the column appears with data as 1,111, 2,345, etc, on the Data Preview screen.
It determines the precision to be 5 on the column definition screen.
If I change the precision to 4 then continue, that field will error out when I verify with "not big enough to hold the data in source columns"
If, I change the excel column to a TEXT column.
Excel still displays as 1111, 2345, etc
The wizard then displays the same data 1111, 2345 on the Data Previeiw screen
Yet, when I get to the column definition screen it still sizes it as a 5
If I change it to a 4, I get the same error when verifying.
If I leave them alone as 5, then it processes just fine.
