Issue with iPod?  Dead, or can it be fixed?

I have a less than one year old nano that I received as a gift. It's the gray on that's about 3-4" tall and about 2" wide.
I use it every day at the gym and, over time, the sweat has run into the port where you plug the headphones in despite my keeping it in an enclosed armband/case.
When I "wiggle" that connection b/t the ipod and the headphones, it makes the iPod jump forward a song and/or actually fast forward through the song itself. Or, it won't then allow me to back up a song, or rewind. Further, it then starts announcing the title of the song, etc. I can't get it to stop unless I shut it off and turn it back on.
I am thinking there is a short and wonder if it's worth repairing. I don't have a receipt, or the box, at this point. Just the unit itself. What do you think?
If I need to have it repaired OUTSIDE of warranty, what am I looking at?
Thanks for your help in advance!

Hello Shumax,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
I am thinking there is a short and wonder if it's worth repairing. I don't have a receipt, or the box, at this point. Just the unit itself. What do you think?
I think that's a decision you can make once you have a better idea of what repairs would amount to and whether or not it might not just be a better idea to wait and purchase a new iPod (well if you wanted to ).
If I need to have it repaired OUTSIDE of warranty, what am I looking at?
It depends on whether you have Apple do the repairs for you or you choose to have a 3rd party repair company instead. Here are Apple's repair quotes.
[iPod Repair Pricing|http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices>
If you want to have another company do it (usually much cheaper), just do a Google search for "iPod repair" and you should get a plethora of results. Hoewver, I cannot vouch for any in particular, but probably only tell you ones I have heard good things about.
Hope this helps and best of luck in your decision.

  • Is my iPod dead or can it be fixed? (help needed!)

I was walking today on pavement ground, and I had my 30GB 5th generation iPod in a Belkin-designed protective case, which is covered in fabric, leather and soft plastic, when i dropped my iPod accidentally (twice, once on the pavement, once in the grass - a case of the butter fingers).
After it dropped, I sat down and turned it on. It played well for about 10 seconds, but when I pushed the menu button it completely froze. After about 2 minutes of trying to get it to move, it moved again and I was able to go down my menu list with delayed timing on each selection (it would freeze then work after about 30 seconds).
After that, it completely froze, then turned off. I came home, pressed the menu and select button, waited 10 seconds. The apple button came up, almost invisibly, as no backlight came on when the logo came into view. I tried to force setting it, by retrying the menu/select, then select/play, but instead I got the sad face and www.itunes.com/support.
After I plugged it into my computer cable/USB, it stated "Please wait... very low battery," although I fully charged it before I left the house today. Sooo, I was wondering, is there any way I can fix this immediately? Or is it broken? Should I just let the iPod charge, or should I keep trying to reset it (even though it just repeats the cycle of Apple/low battery/sad face/apple/low battery/sad face)?
This is the first time I've dropped it. Oh, and no, my computer does not recognize the iPod in the My Computer section, though it is plugged in. Thank you.

Difficult to say whether it's broken beyond repair or not. Dropping an iPod can do all kinds of damage internally.
There is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon or the folder and ! icon. You might get some info from it about how to revive your iPod.

  • Major issues with iPod even after restore

I have a 120 GB iPod Classic and it was working well but I transferred some videos and some of the files got really messed up on it. First the languages got corrupted and most Asian characters wouldn't show up. I plugged it in and then ejected it after looking through my songs and that fixed the problem.
Then I found out a bunch of the videos on the iPod were not opening for a while, then when they did, it only showed a really messed up screen, and the iPod was causing the computer to freeze whenever I did anything in iTunes. I deletes those videos, and it froze the computer, and after a long time I took it out and those files did actually end up deleted. I tried to transfer a few files, and it took hours (maybe 3 hours of podcasts) and then when it was done, I ejected safely, and lo and behold, all my files are totally corrupt. I did a Restore, and then it seemed to fix most problems, and I tried transferring music to it. After about 200 songs, the transferring began to freeze for minutes at a time, and finally completely stop moving and freeze iTunes. It keeps alternating between the "Connected - Eject before disconnecting" image and a "Synchronizing" image. I tried to Restore again, and then transferring more stuff, it happened again. Sometimes the computer tells me to scan and fix errors with the external device.
After a few more tries of restoring, it keeps freezing after a certain point. It holds up my entire computer when it does it, and the iPod sometimes makes clicking noises when transferring. Loading up certain videos is extremely slow, and the thumbnail it's showing for my videos is an extremely staticy screen. I think the hard drive is corrupted, but wouldn't restoring the iPod fix that? I don't want to do anything else to it right now, since it'll still play some music alright, but there's massive issues with it that I can't fix, and most of my music is now gone. It seems to be taking tons of time of clicking and not doing anything to transfer even the smallest file, and sometimes it just freezes entirely. It seems like it's a specific part of the HD that's actually experiencing physical damage, but I don't know.
Can anyone help? I've tried everything I can do, but I feel like the more I try to fix the worse it's going to be. My warranty lasts until November 30, and I'm wondering if I can just get a replacement.

    Just an update:
I connected my iPod again today, and this time I tried transferring just 1 file to "check if it would be better." The 1 song still took maybe 15 minutes to transfer and froze iTunes for a while, and then when I tried to eject it it kept telling me the files were in use by another program. Well I tried to Restore it, since obviously something was screwed up. Same error. Everything became frozen when I tried to click for my iPod's information in the side bar. Then I manually unplugged it and plugged it back in, Windows tells me to scan and fix errors on the drive, I didn't because that causes explorer.exe to freeze up, and then I restored the iPod again. Right now there's only 3 playlists on there, and I think that's well below the danger zone, but I don't know what's wrong with it or what to do about it right now.

Also, I apparently have to replace my battery. Could the problem have any relevance to a dead battery?

Have you held the power button down for 10+ seconds?  That should turn it off.

  • New issue with iPod update 1.2

So I just got off the phone with applecare and the guy said that with all the issues that have just come up with the ipod and 1.2, this one he hasn't heard of. Any of you have it? here's the issue:
When the ipod (5 gen 30G) is turned on the screen "scrolls" like a ticker screen in times square in New York. The whole screen shifts from right to left. Sometimes all the horizontal lines of pixels don't scroll all together and it results in a "smeared" look making it unreadable. If the lock is on, it stops. If I scroll the wheel clockwise or counterclockwise the whole screen "scrolls" right to left faster. The faster I spin the wheel, the faster the screen moves. Tried everything with applecare and they can't get it to stop. It occurred IMMEDIATELY after installing the 1.2 update. (as a matter of fact while it was resyncing the red circle with the line thru it started moving across the screen).
    Anyone else encounter this?
    Tom

Try doing a restore, and if that doesn't work, you may need to return/exchange it.

  • Issues With iPod on Vista

I have an iPod classic and an running the latest iTunes on vista home. Not here's the messed up part. As of late when I connect the iPod, it gives me a pop-up window which reads "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes."
I tried restoring it many, many times, and till I get the same end result. That **** pop-up.
Has anyone ele encountered this, or better yet, found a solution?

  • Sudden issue with ipod mini and itunes

    Hi
Up until yesterday I have never had a problem with my iPod then I connected to iTunes (again never had any issue with this) and iTunes said that the iPod was in recovery state. After some messing about which didn't lead to the issue resolving itself I hit restore. The restore seemed to be fine and iTunes then recognised the iPod.
However everytime I now connect my iPod at the top of iTunes it says 'Updating iPod' for a few seconds and then switches to 'OK to disconnect'. I can't copy anything onto it using iTunes so am stuck with an empty iPod now.
Any ideas on how to resolve?
    Thanks,

I'm not certain I understand the problem: have you re-installed iTunes 6 and now are unable to purchase iTunes Store music?
I have an iPod Mini and have used it flawlessly with iTunes 7 on both a G5 iMac and a G4 Cube under 10.4.7, so "incompatibility" is not the issue here.
iTunes 6.0.5 indeed does continue to allow iTunes Store music purchases...if your problem persists, get back to us here with more info!

  • Anyone else having issue with ipod scrubber bar?

Anyone else having issue with the ipod scrubber bar? Can rarely get the thing to appear, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Then, once it's open, good luck making it go away.
Anyone else notice any funky, non-responsive, inconsistent behavior?

So you're having trouble just tapping the album artwork when a song is playing and the scrubber doesn't toggle on and off?
I'm not getting this funky behavior with 2.1.

  • Major Issues with iPod Touch - Please help!

Hi, I am having major issues with my iPod, and nothing seems to be going right. It all started a few days after I got it for Christmas. I would wake up, and my iPod would be completely discharged even though it had a full battery and was turned off. I woke up one night and found that it came on all by myself. I sent it into iPod, and they sent it back saying nothing was wrong. Since I got it back today and within six hours, I have had four software crashes to the point where I have had to uninstall iTunes and restore factory settings four times. I am now on my fifth crash, but this time, the screen won't even come on. It keeps saying that it is in recovery mode. I simply went to turn it on! Does anyone have any suggestions? Personally, I think there is a short, and that I need a new a replacement. However, it doesn't seem like Apple is very supportive of the idea. I go through all of their steps over and over and over, and the same thing happens! What is going on? Please help.
    Marie

sounds like, for the charging problem anyways, that you are just putting ipod into "Stand by" mode... press and hold the power key for about 10 seconds and an option to power off will actually come on.. if u just press it and let go, it just goes to stand by.. i have noticed stand by drains my battery
also, it doesn't sound like a short to me... the charging i am pretty sure is bc you are only putting it into standby however, the rest sounds like software.. did u try and restore using itunes or did you just reset the factory defaults?? Plug it into itunes and click restore under the ipod menu...

  • Battery Issue With iPod Classic?

I have my iPod hooked up to my radio so it usually just charges that way, but I kept having low battery so I decided to charge it all the way and then reboot it and when I rebooted and the iPod turned back on it went straight "to low battery" or "no power remaining" and it never use to do this.

    Hi Jay504,

  • Issues with iPod nano 7th gen UI

    Hi,
I just received an ipod nano 7th generation and am having issues with the UI. I am having to double tap every icon in order to open music, videos, etc. Also I cannot swipe to the second page of icons. Whenever I try to a black box appears around an icon and then switches to a different one anytime I swipe. A box even appears around the time and battery power. Has anyone else had this problem? Im starting to get frustrated with the seeming lack of responsiveness of the touch screen. Thanks

Try turning off VoiceOver. On the iPod go to Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> set to off.
The black boxes you describe appearing around the icons is a sign that voiceover is active. I had the same problem with mine until the Genius Bar helped me.
    Hope that helps.

  • I'm having weird syncing issues with iPod.

I just played a song using my iPod, then synced my iPod. When I looked at my "Recently Played" smart playlist, it said I just played an entirely different song. What's up with that?

You can only pair your iPhone 4s to the computer for tethering, you can't sync with it. Are you trying to pair your 7th gen to play music through the MBP speakers?

  • Sound issues with Ipod 5th Gener

When I plug my headphones into my ipod the music continues to play through the speaker. I have to twist the headphones jack around some in order for the music to finally play through the headphones. If I bump the ipod or try to exercise with it the music stops playing through the headphones or plays through the speaker. Is anyone dealing with a similar issue or does anyone have any suggestions? I sent it in to apple, they ran diagnostics on it and found nothing wrong. Is it really that sensitive?
    Thanks!!!!
    Ivey

I'm having the same issue with my Ipod and this is the first big issue I've had with it in over 4 years.
I have been told by a lot of people that it's the audio jack gotten loose. At one point I actually had my headphones taped down on it for my to get music and only through the left earbud.

  • I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. How can I resolve this issue?

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. There are a number of issues I have run across:
If I have four tabs open on Safari then I start to get a flickering on the screen from the GPU refreshing
When I leave the computer alone for more than 20 mins the screen saver should start -- what happens is that the screen goes to black. When I move the cursor I do not get the login screen. I have to reboot
FireFox Web browser will not run
I get issues with the computer running very slowly
I have already turned off the transparency option in settings. Any ideas??

Do you have more than one OS on the Mac?
You may want to look at something like http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/. This has a Free Trial window, but it is a commercial application. If there are any heat/sensor issues, this may help.

  • TS1550 Time Machine issue with Mountain Lion.  Can you help?

I have an Iomega Mac Companion used as an external backup drive for my Imac running Mountain Lion. After launching Time Machine, I got an error message that said the backup couldn't' be completed because an error occurred while creating the backup folder.  I rebooted and everything was fine for 24 hours.  Since then, I get the same error message even after another reboot.  In Time Machine preferences it says "oldest backup none" and "latest backup none."
    Any suggestions?
    GR

Finally have it solved!!  Sort of...  I spoke with Mac support on two occasions and they were extremely helpful.  Thought the issue was with the firewire 800 connection.  Switched to a USB connection and everything worked great...for about 24 hours.  Then had the same error messages.  Chatted with Iomega tech support and they finally admitted that there are known issues with Mountain Lion, there is no work around and they have no intention of making it compatible with 10.8.
I'm returning the drive today.  Thanks for your help and suggestions.  Suggestions for a decent back up hard drive that will work with Mountain Lion?
