Issue with layer stacking

I am very new to AE! I got the 30 day trial so that I could create a car hit effect for a class project. I am following a tutorial. (How To Get Hit By Car - Adobe After Effects Visual Effects Tutorial - YouTube) The top layer is the car driving through, and the bottom layer is the girl walking and being "hit." In the tutorial the top layer's opacity was lowered so that the bottom layer was visible. This way you can line up the car to touch the girl as soon as she flinches. However, when I lower the opacity of the top layer the opacity does not change at all! It does not reveal the bottom layer in any way. I lined them up using my judgment, and then masked out the car in the top layer. I set the mask to Add as it is in the tutorial. Again, I played it back to see the car drive through the shot of the girl, but it just played the shot of the car driving.
In Final Cut, the top layer is shown. When you lower the opacity of the top layer, the bottom layer becomes revealed. In After Effects, it only plays back the layer that I have selected, rather than which is on top. Please help me with this issue, as well as the opacity not changing! I'm under a lot of pressure and I have very little support, so this is my only solace! I'm working with the latest version (CC) on a Mac.

You are looking at the Footage Panel not the Composition Panel. You can only preview a composition using the Composition Panel in the Active Camera view. If that doesn't solve your problem then with the Composition Panel selected select both layers in the timeline and press the U key twice to reveal all of the properties that have been changed on the layers and show us the keyframes.

Issues with layer

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am just frustrated and cannot think strait. I am using CS4 and I use the Totally Rad Action Pack. Whenever I use an action it runs like normal and then when I go to edit the layer it does nothing. Example, the pack has an action called yin/tang it is an action that gives you two layers you can manipulate to lighten or darken a photo. When I select the layer to lighten and us my tool it does nothing to the photo. Any help would be much appreciated.

That helped, but I usually run the action and then use the brush tool to affect the area I want. The method purposed effects the whole picture which is fine if I want the effect on the whole photo but not so good for some of the actions that are for retouching and you just want to work on one area. I don't think it’s the actions a setting that I may have inadvertently turned on or off.
Is it possible to invert what the tool does i.e it takes the photo back to original instead of making the changes the action creats if that makes sense.

I have CS2 and would like to do Image Stacking. I understand CS3 allows this. correct? Am I wiser to purchase CS3 upgrade. Am I going to run into issues with install?

Well, I refuse to sign up to pay Adobe a monthly tribute for life too, but that doesn't mean we are limited to CS3.
I'm staying with CS6.
Adobe still sells a perpetual-license to Photoshop CS6 without the subscription model, but it's $700 for the Standard version and a cool $1,000 for the Extended version.
You haven't mentioned your platform, Macintosh or Windows, so make sure CS3 or any other obsolete version you buy actually runs on a modern operating system.

Happy to report that iTunes Match has returned to working like normal on iTunes 10.7 on my computer today. If any iTunes engineers read this thread, I really appreciate the fix.

I have a 218 MB PSD file that is causing me major headaches. Any time I start up the file, dragging a single layer goes at about 2 frames per second. However, if I delete one layer or simply cut and paste a layer, the lag is fixed.
From the video:
- Deleting a hidden layer fixes the lag
- Removing one background layer fixes the lag
- Cutting and pasting any background layer onto a new layer fixes the lag...
Saving and returning to the doc causes it to lag again.
Anyone know what's going on? Photoshop Preferences:

- Happens in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions
- I have the same issue with Photoshop CC 2014.

Mission Control/ Expose issue with stacked pages hard to view. Please help

Is it just me or is there a real issue with the way Mission Control/ Expose displays these stacked windows? For instance, I had about 6 finder windows open, showing 6 different folders on my Desktop. If I then use Mission Control to quickly access a particular folder, it displays all my finder windows together, stacked up on one another and this makes it almost impossible to view which particular folder i want. It doesnt have the folder names displayed so this is seriuosly time consuming now. Is this something im doing wrong, or is it a valid issue?

If you are just trying to see all the Finder windows which are available, just invoke App expose. I use a 4 finger swipe down. If you are in finder, just swipe. If you are in another application, hover your mouse over the Finder icon in the dock and swipe. All the windows are easy to see.
(You can, of course, do this with any application, not just the Finder.)

Issues with the DBACOCKPIT and SLD (sp stack 13)

Dear all,
we activated an SLD on our Solutione Manager box (sp stack 13) and were able to import all the landscape into the DBACOCKPIT, so far so good.
I understood that is necessary to go fo some post-processing in order to be able to get access to the remote mssql SAP DBs.
BTW, I'm trying to connect first a NW7.0 system with SP stack 12.
I've tried to follow note Note 1050292 - MSSQL DBACOCKPIT : multiple errors on various screens as it is apparently the way to go, but no luck.
Also I don't understand why the DBACOCKPIT continues to complain for not using the 'dbo' user, our DBs are all schemas non-dbo.
Any help in understanding the DBACOCKPIT config for the remote mssql DBs would be greatly appreciated and rewarded.

Ok,
we solved the issue bu ourselves.
The DBACOCKPIT now 'wants' to create a monitoring schema over the mssql target db, using the naming convention 'SAPSolMan710'
You have to 'repair' then 'create' the monitoring schema as described in Note 1050292 - MSSQL DBACOCKPIT : multiple errors on various screens
Once again SAP didn't help and we had to find the solution thru their own notes !

DVD Playback Issues with Dual Layer media

I have been using DVDSP for years now, and have rarely had any issues with burning my final projects to DVD. Any playback issues have usually been issues with players and +or-R media.
I have recently upgraded to a MacPro, and have been really stoked about being able to burn to Dual Layer media. My previous G5 didn't have a DL burner.
I have a large project that fills most the disk, and everything seems great in the software, and when playing the media files on the computer. But when I burn to disk, I have huge issues with playback on different DVD players, computers, etc. I have stuttering with menu's, freezing, and stuttering with playback of video.
I read that the issue could be because of the speed I'm burning at in DVDSP, so I saved as a disk image, and used disk utility to burn at a 4x speed. This seemed to help, but when I got to the end of the movie I had huge issues with stuttering/playback quality. So I burned another copy from the same disk image, and it wouldn't even play in my DVD player.
When I open the Video_TS folder from the DVDSP Build, and play right off my hard drive in the DVD software player, I don't have any of these issues.
So I'm guessing my problem is either my DVD media I'm using, or the burners on this new computer. I've burned DVD's on both burners (yes I have 2) and I still have the same problems.
I am using Memorex DVD+R DL and they are 8x.
Can anyone offer me some advice here. I really wish I could just hit burn and have a disk work. DL media isn't all that cheap and I don't know how many coasters I can make and keep my sanity.

I used compressor and I used the DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes setting. The bit rate is avg 6.2 and maximum 7.7. And yes I used ac3 audio.
When you say lowest speeds possible... shouldn't a burner that says it burns at a speed work at that speed? I'm cool with burning at a lower speed to get this thing to work, but why have a burner that burns DVD DL at 8x speed, when it doesn't work? Shouldn't it work? Why is it that it won't work?
If I get Verbatim DVD+R DL, can I burn at 8x speed with those?
When I burn in disk utility I used the "varify burned data" and everything checks out ok. So why do I have this issue. Just curious.

Issues with PSD layer menu and interlace "clipping" on text

I am using Photoshop to create text-based layered menus. I'm having issues with the top and/or bottom of the text being "clipped" or cut off. If i bump the text up or down one pixle, it sometimes gets better, but it throws off the balance/spacing of the overall menu... and on text with more than one line of text, it generally creates the clipping issue on another line of text. Is there a de-interlace filter for text menus in DVD Studio 4? Is there something I can try in Photoshop? (The text I am using is 20pt, helvetica. About 95% white over a blueish background... pretty good contrast between the 2.)

actually - just talked with a friend and discovered the problem. I created my photoshop files @720x486. When I cropped the files to 720x480, they work.

Overlaying SWF Asset with layer components - Strange behaviors.

I am brand new at Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst.
I have been spending most of my time in Catalyst at first and realized later on that I needed some of the nice features inside of FlashBuilder.
I created a few FlashBuilder components and brought them in Catalyst in order to speed up my designing requirements.
After bringing in several SWF assets in Catalyst I stumlbed upon a few curious behavior.
1. If I load SWF assets in a same page and if they are inter mixed with components layers issued either from Photoshop or made from within Catalyst, I am unable to select most of them. Only and only if I move them away from the other components, I can actually select them. They also become available when I make a test run, which they weren't before, if they were close or under other layerrs, but stll visible.
2. Is there a reason why the names of the SWF are not visual at the layer level within Catalyst ? All I see once the SWF are loaded is the terminology SWF Asset with the Skin name Wireframe. This also seems to be creating a conflict in how the SWF components are selectable, since every time I select one of the SWF Asset, it is the one at the highest level in the layer stack that gets selected and not the one that I am attempting to select.
3. I ran once into a problem which was related to Skin name convention where I was duplicating buttons that always kept the same Skin name, which made it impossible to re-use them, since any modification would affect all of the duplicated components. Why can't Catalyst create new Skin names in order to avoid this behavior?
I am pretty happy using Catalyst and Builder, but I gotta say that some of those behaviors are putting a dent in my schedule.
Anyone would have a few words of advice ? I am especially concerned with the "perceived" impossibiliy to use more than one SWF asset within Catalyst.

Oops, on looking back at my original post I can see I was not
clear on an important point. The layers that hold the three
different swf files are in Dreamweaver, one layer holds
Parks_Monuments.swf, another holds Land_Seascapes.swf and the third
holds Cityscapes.swf. As it works now you click on the appropriate
button on the left and through the use of Dreamweaver behaviors it
shows the associated swf by hiding the other two layers. BTW the
buttons are quite crude right now - no over or down states.
I realize I can't use the layers in an Actionscript to do
something but would it be possible to add a script to the down
state of a button so that it would show/hide the Dreamweaver
layers? I guess another way of doing it would be to put each swf on
a seperate page and have the script call up it's URL. Seems like
that would add a lot of overhead and duplicate uploading each time
the user switches photo categories.

Layer stacking in portrait editing

I have a brief question about a complicated issue that I am hoping someone can help me with as painlessly as possible. If there are videos, books, tutorials or anything that addresses this matter I will be happy to purchase whatever it takes. My issue is 99% layers. I am a headshot photographer and have been using Photoshop for many years. I’m therefore not a newbie to it or layers but I have some degree of difficulty with the stacking order sometimes. I also edit for other photographers who know little or nothing about Ps and so the stacking becomes more of an issue for someone who didn’t actually edit the photo. More to the point, I am trying to learn the best practice for ORDERING things so that it’s always possible to go back and tweak something from a lower layer. However, my problem is that I frequently need to make a flattened layer (on Mac: shift+opt+cmd-E) and then do something FROM that point forward. This, of course renders curves adjustments and the like useless insofar as changes you want to make later due to layers above it being baked in going forward. I am also not entirely clear what adjustments MUST be on pixel layers and which ones can be on a blank layer. If anyone has advice on this I would greatly appreciate it - OR - can just tell me where I might find instruction on this specific topic. Lastly, if there is a better forum for me to post this to I will be happy to do so.

Yes, 'stamp visible' is the same thing you called flatten layers (shift+opt+cmd+E); but it makes a new layer as opposed to just flattening what is already there. Just semantics, we're doing the same thing. The object is to do as much as you can non-destructively (without stamp visible), and it sounds like you're doing it when you don't have to:
Spot Healing: You can open a new blank layer and use the stamp/clone tool, just make sure to check "sample all layers". This way the layer only has your edits, not a complete copy of the entire image. Makes it easier to select changes, and reduces overall size of the document.
Frequency Separation has to have it's own layer(s). Nothing you can do about it, which is why I do it first. Just one note: if you are going to do FS, then you should decide whether or not you want to do spot healing before. In most cases, at least for portraiture, you should do you spot healing in FS. That's one of the major benefits. If I'm just cloning out something in the background I won't necessarily do it in FS, since it's quicker outside, but any editing on the subject should be done in FS. IMHO anyway.
I'm not sure how you do Dodge and Burn, there are several ways. But you can absolutely do it non-destructively. I'd recommend either using a 50% grey method, or just white and black in a soft light or overlay blending mode. Either methods don't require stamp visible.
Eye and teeth whiting also have several methods, many are non-destructive. I usually do this in Lightroom when I convert from RAW (I believe you can also do it in the new ACR? in Photoshop). But if you're using jpg or want to do it in Photoshop it's just as easy, and non-destructive. Use a combination of curves and hue/saturation adjustment layers. I prefer using curves for the lightness, as it gives me more control, but the hue/sat has a slider for lightness. If they have yellow teeth I reduce yellow saturation as well.
All color and tone should be done non-destructively, through adjustment layers.
Sharpening depends on how you do it. Again, I do it in RAW conversion. The only thing I do in Photoshop is either a highpass filter and/or I can do it manually within the high frequency layer in F.S. I often prefer to do it as a separate high pass layer at the very end, because I don't like too strong of an effect and I get a better idea of how much I want at the end of the edit.
So, to sum it up, really the only stamp visible I use is for frequency separation, and I do it at the start.

Issues with iMessage when switching data carrier (wifi - cellular)

So I have had this issue with my 5S and now my 6+ in iMessage. Not *always* but often enough I've run into issues sending messages via iMessage when I associate with wifi in that they don't send. I'll get an error message saying "not delivered" and it will stack as many outgoing messages I try to send. However, if I force the first message to send as text, subsequent messages will go through afterwards without issue. If I go from wifi to cellular I have no issues whatsoever and when I have these issues on wifi, my data works fine (incoming emails, Facebook notifications, etc.). I used to run cellular data only because I had unlimited but now I have a cap so I intend on using wifi when possible...but to have to send my first message as a text just so I can use iMessage is annoying...

Issues with WebForm performance

We had migrated a new application from UAT to PROD and we encounter webform performance issues with the following actions..
After login, the first form you open it is
always slow. After this you can switch from one form to another without a
delay.
Then once you change any data – the next time
you access a form it gets delayed.
The point to be noted is, it doesnt have any performance issues in the UAT environment and the configuration settings,essbase cache settings are all the same. We did try to move the EPM system to a new server to see if this is a hardware issue but no luck, the performance issues still exist. The consumption of the CPU/memory has been checked and it is proved that the form opening delay has nothing to do with lack of memory.
The JVM head settings is set up at 4GB which is infact higher than that of the UAT environment(2GB).
runs on Windows server2008,11.1.2.1.600 EPM serve, has planning,reporting,foundation on one server (32GB ram) and essbase on another server (32GB ram). Any help is appreciated.

In the above wsdl the collection of fintObjInst if of type xs:anytype. From the wsdl, I do not see the xsd mapping for AccountIC which includes Name and Desc. Due to which, when invoking the web service from a different client like c#(by creating proxy business service), I am unable to set the parameters for AccountIC. I am using JAX-WS stack and WLS 10.3. I have already looked at blog http://weblogs.java.net/blog/kohlert/archive/2006/10/jaxws_and_type.html but unable to solve this issue. However, at run time using a tool like SoapUI, when this wsdl is imported, I am able to see all the params related to AccountIC class.
Can some one help me with this.

Did you try adding the the XmlSeeAlso annotation to the webservice
@XmlSeeAlso({<package.name>.AccountIC.class})
This will add the schema for the data type (AccountIC) to the WSDL.
