Issue with startup disk

I've been hearing a grinding/spinning sound lately, and I decided to run Disk Utility. When Disk Utility displayed the following message:
I attempted to startup from the 10.4 DVD. After selecting that I wanted to startup from the DVD, my screen displays:
I have my Mac plugged into the outlet, and I don't really know what this message is trying to tell me or what to do.

The message is to change and/or install fresh new batteries into your wireless bluetooth mouse.

  • Brand new to the Mac World and NEED SOME HELP with startup disk issues

Hello everyone. I am a new Mac user and I purchased my mac on ebay. It's an iMac that came with tiger 10.4.11. I wanted to get a fresh start on the computer, since the person who had it before me did not erase all of his stuff. I didn't know what to do so I got a startup disk/install disk off ebay also. When I go to install it says "software cannot be installed on this computer." Before I bought the software, I had called the apple store and they said it should be fine to buy any install software to put on the computer. If I could get any help it would be appreciated. I had read previous threads that I should hold down c when I start up (didn't work) or that I should select archive or erase and install (I never got these options when I went to install).

A warm welcome to the Discussions!
What iMac is it? I only ask as the Retail Tiger CD/DVDs don't work on IntelMacs, only PPC, (G3, G4, G5 Macs).
Sorry what you were told by the Apple Store, but if it's a Gray CD/DVD then it is Machine specific as Neil stated.
Sooo, what exact iMac is it, and what does it say on the CD/DVD?

  • Problems with "Startup Disk Memory"

I'm having issues with hard drive storage.
My spotify account is telling me it can't play music because my hard drive is full. Applications won't run because my "startup disk space is full." I can't download ANYTHING because there is no space.
Before anyone tells me to delete some files, I have already backed up all my files and deleted ALL OF THEM. The only thing on my computer at the moment is my software. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I'm at the end of my rope. My computer is basically good for nothing right now. I'm also having extreme problems booting it up, and connecting to Wi-Fi. I'm running Lion OS X, fyi.

  • Cisco Agent Desktop / Supervisor Desktop Issue with Full Disk Encryption

Has anyone had any issues related to running Cisco Agent Desktop or Cisco Supervisor Desktop on a machine running full disk encryption?  Our desktop team installed full disk encryption software from Check Point, and it seams to be causing some issues with call monitoring, screen pops via workflow and connectivity to the UCCX server.  It's not effecting every machine (that we know of), but the fix for us right now is to provide a desktop without the encryption software.  I'm just wondering if this is related to us, or if there is any supporting documentation out there?
    Any help is apprecicated.

CAD for IPCCX v4 does not support windows 7. See compatibility matrix:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/crs/express_compatibility/matrix/crscomtx.pdf
In my experience if you already have CAD installed and you upgrade the OS (without a fresh rebuild) CAD will work - but it is NOT supported. You should test this though.
You will not be able to install the older version of CAD on windows 7, the installer will give you errors.

  • Having problems with Startup Disk Installing Panther

I'm having problems installing Panther, I currently have a 9.2 OS. I get a message that the startup disk could not select the new os as the start up disk. Has anyone had this problem before? I've done all my updates, firmware included. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Julie

I bought the disc on ebay, its for an emac.
That disk isn't compatible with your computer; it will only work on a specific eMac model. You need a retail Mac OS X installation package, which is available here.

  • I have a IMac 10.7.4 with  startup disk is full problems

I have a IMac 10.7.4 with 1TB of space I'm getting that my startup disk is full when i only using about 60 gigs any ideas for me

First step would be to empty the caches on the computer. To do this:
    1. Click on the Finder
    2. Click on 'Go' in menu bar across the top of the screen.
    3. Click on 'Go to Folder'
    4. In the box that appears type '~/Library' (without the ' apostrophes)
    5. A list with a lot of folders should appear. Locate the 'Caches' folder and open it.
    6. Drag everything in this 'Cache' folder to the Trash.
    7. Empty the Trash.
    8. Restart the computer.
    Still getting the same message?
    Keep us posted!

  • What is the correct fsck syntax for issue with invisible disk ?

    Hello everybody,
My problem actually (I also have a problem with the 17" Install DVD) is to repair *3 disks* with *fsck command*, as the filesystems are damaged. I phoned Apple Assistance Saturday, for about 30 minutes, but finally the Advisor sent me a link to one of their thousands (and sometimes obsolete) articles, and the solution wasn't there entirely.
I'll describe you the problem :
One of my USB external disks (4TB data) *doesn't appear* after Startup, but when I use the Install DVD and Disk Utility, the application tells me it's OK, that the disk "SEEMS" to be alright etc. That's false.
When I reboot with *Cmd + S* (root level), and tell Terminal (I have been obliged to print the four states of an American Extended keyboard) :
    "sudo fsck -fy /dev/disk4s1"
    the reply is :
"BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG
    LOOK FOR ALTERNATE SUPERBLOCKS? yes
SEARCH FOR ALTERNATE SUPER-BLOCK FAILED. YOU MUST USE THE
-b OPTION TO FSCK TO SPECIFY THE LOCATION OF AN ALTERNATE
SUPER-BLOCK TO SUPPLY NEEDED INFORMATION; SEE fsck(8)."
So, I use the *-b option* of *fsck command*, and :
"fsck: -b flag *requires a number*"
"-b size Specify the size, in bytes, of the physical blocks used by
    the -B option."
So, I'm searching *since 3 days* (and *I'm learning a lot*, but nothing, of course, concerning my problem) the full info command to know *what sector address* I have to tell to -b to install an alternate superblock, because I need to know exactly at which places filesystems and *data start* and end.
You understand, I suppose, that I can't use any of my softwares, because the disk is INVISIBLE (doesn't exist) after normal restarting.
    It's not MOUNTED nor UNMOUNTED.
It exists (very well, thank you) when rebooting *with Apple Install DVD*.
I'm under *Snow Leopard 10.6.5*, and I don't know if, perhaps,
*there wouldn't be a problem* (or more) with this update ...
That's what I've seen, in any case, on other places here,
    about several different issues.
Please, Bob, Gary, Camelot, etresoft, Bill, Jun, Nils, Cole, Charles, Michael,
    gimme some help !
If someone has the full solution, a beginning of solution,
    or a path to solution,
thank you very, very much in advance !
    With my best regards
    Vialatte

    Dear Camelot,
    First, thank you very much for answering me and try to help me ;
Secundo, please read, if you have time, what I replied to Bill Scott,
and I have to thank you also for your slightly better contribution and understanding.
Some words of what I've replied to him are written for you too :
"I type *sudo fsck -fy /dev/disk4s2* (not s1, of course, and *Camelot is perfectly right*, having remarked this mistake, as *s1 is dedicated to partition map* volumes).
There's also *a strange thing* with Disk Utility when starting from DVD :
it doesn't display the s1 volumes as usual."
As you've read it in my reply to Bill, it's a *complicated issue* and *Apple has no response*.
You tell me : "+Good luck with that.+" It starts badly.
"+It's been a long time since I've had to deal with superblocks+"
I totally ignored their existence …
"+- they just don't come up any more,+" What is the meaning of this sentence ?
"+but I don't know any way of recovering the superblock address after a disk has failed.+" That's the matter of my question : *Is it a failure ?*
"+Typically (at least, historically) you get the superblock addresses in advance, storing them somewhere safe until you need them.+"
That's a total discovery for me.
You tell me then : "+Are you talking about in the Finder here?+" Yes and no, I talk about the Sidebar (see below), but it's part of the Finder.
"+Have you checked the Finder's preferences to make sure it's just not hiding external drives?+" I did, when you told me to do so.
"+Since everything else tells you that the drive is OK+" Yes, you're right, when starting from Install DVD, that's *very strange*, but remember fsck doesn't say *the same at all* as Disk Utility ... "+this just sounds like a Finder preference setting to me.+"
I'm sorry, it would have been wonderful. My settings are correct, that means :
NOTHING on Desktop, ALL (including Computer) in the Sidebar (and clicking on Computer allows me to check that *no volume* has vanished from Sidebar (it happens sometimes).
"+If it's not the Finder prefs, then please post the output of diskutil list in order to troubleshoot further.+"
Here it is (a little far below), but there's *none of the 2 4TB volumes* (yes, there are two disks missing now) here, because, as I already said that, they are invisible for the Finder and *Disk Utility*, and I think *it's the same for Terminal.*
You'll note there's *no BOOTCAMP partition* here (I removed it temporarly to solve this issue), and don't be afraid if there are several systems on the internal HD.
As I noticed it here and there, there are problems with 10.6.5.
So, I try to work with 10.6.4 (delivered with MBP 17"), but have also an universal 10.6.0 Snow Leopard, with which I can configurate 10.6 *at any state*.
Unfortunately, I *can't use* (it so that Apple decided to do) the DVD delivered with my 15" MBP (rejected by 17"), because it is with my MBP 15" that I formatted those disks.
*Another thing :* If I didn't want my wife *to install herself* (with me to help her) the 15" MBP I've gave to her (there's the 17" new 500GB 5400rpm installed in it by me), I would already have tried to connect these two 4TB, just to see.

As you and I see, I strongly believe that disk15s2 and disk16s2 (with s3, s4, s5 etc. partitions) are missing.
I must find a way to prove what I say to you. Remember that we are not in the case where I use *Cmd + s* after rebooting with Install DVD, but under normal utilisation. What follows has no interest :
Last login: Fri Nov 26 21:23:55 on ttys006
    sys171064:~ OH$ sudo fsck -fy /dev/disk15s2
    Password:

    sys171064:~ OH$
So, I will now restart my MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.4 Install DVD, and go :
    —1 in *Disk Utility* ;
    —2 in Terminal (with *Cmd + s*).
I'll *note all* what I see, and then write you what I found.
You'll be nice to tell me if there's a way, in these conditions,
    a) to *save Disk Utility log* ; or/and
    b) to *save Terminal Output(s)* (.txt) ; or/and
    c) to *take and save screenshots*, ; or/and
    d) to *print anything*. (?)
as I don't know how it's possible to save these informations.
Thank you once more for your help. I'll do things now, but as it is 23:02 here in France, maybe I won't write you till tomorrow.
But, if you can answer to a), b), c) or d) above, post it to me please, because I'll go back here tonight.
And, also, *but I don't want to bore you*, I'd like to learn how to *copy and paste parts of messages* as you did, and how to *insert a Grab item (.png)* in a discussion, because an image is better than thousand words (that's what we say in France, but I'm sure we are not alone on Earth — like in the Universe).
    With my best regards
    Vialatte

Add more RAM or cut back on concurrent applications. Startup Item is irrelevant.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • Issue with recovery disks purchased from HP

I had a harddrive failure on the HP Pavilion 21-h010. Instead of utilizing the warranty, I decided to purchase a new harddrive and restore disks from HP.
Initially, I had the error where I was told that the disks could not be used for the system. I found that while the Build ID on the disks ( 14AM1ARA601 ) mostly matched my system ( 14AM1ARA602 ), investigating the restore disk revealed it was looking for a Build ID of ( 14EM1ARA602 ). After changing the Buidl ID in the computer, I was able to kick off the restore process.
After the 4th disk is used and removed, and the system reboots, it runs through some commands and red screens. I pulled the drive and found an error log with this detail:
    *x:\opktools\imagex.exe /check /export /ref c:\sources\INSTALL*.SWM "c:\sources\INSTALL.SWM" USW864ML-S "c:\sources\BASEIMAGE.WIM" BASE_IMAGE
    ImageX Tool for Windows
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp. All rights reserved.
    Version: 6.3.9600.16384
    Exporting: [c:\sources\INSTALL.SWM, USW864ML-S] ->
    [c:\sources\BASEIMAGE.WIM]
The specified image [USW864ML-S] was not found in [c:\sources\INSTALL.SWM].
Failed to export the base image!
Seems to me that the portion of the image is missing or damaged.
    Does anyone have any thoughts?

  • Issues with External Disk in Mountain Lio

I have a Mac mini from mid-2010 come pre-installed with Snow Leopard (no install disks were given). I upgraded to Lion and then Mountain Lion. I used a 1TB Iomega external hard drive formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaling) as my Time Machine backup disk until 2 days ago when my disk suddenly became unwriteable after a Finder crash.
Opened Disk Utility the first time:
Verifier did not complete and told me to repair the disk
Repair failed too and notified me to back up files, reformat, and restore. As this is where I store the time machine backups, I wasn't sure what to do.
I ejected the disk, unplugged the USB from my computer and plugged it back in.
"Mac OS X can't repair the disk" and information on inability to save
when I opened Disk Utility again
    Verifier failed.
    Repair failed
Attempted to remount the disk and received an error
    Ejected the disk
    Reload disk
Same inabiltiy to write error as above
    Disk Utility attempt 3:
Tried to restore files on an emergency backup drive and even that failed.
    Verify failed
    Repair failed
I reformat the disk and then try to run verification when it mounts again
Still fails, told to repair disk
Repair fails, tells me to reformat again
So now not only did I lose my backups and files, the reformat did not fix the disk issue.
Strangest thing is that when I reformatted the drive for Windows on my laptop the drive had no issues loading and using a file recovery program I was able to recover many files I lost in the reformat (despite the directory loss) but no backups. i am about to test the recovered files when they finish being unRARed (I had to compress them to fit on a USB). The disk still runs without any issue on windows.
As I'm using my emergency backup drive (a 3TB Seagate) with Time Machine after this incident I want to know how to prevent a repeat of this incident or a way to make my Iomega usable on my Mac mini again. Currently running OS X 10.8.2.

See if this makes any difference...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Try reformatting the external there & see if it verifies/mounts OK.

  • Problems with startup, disk utility, everything else (it seems)

So I've been having problems with my iMac for about a week (I believe I'm running OSX 10.5 with whatever the most recent update is) (also, it's a 24" that I bought refurbed last October). I kept getting the ?file screen upon startup, but eventually it would start just fine.
I thought I managed to start and restart in safe-boot yesterday, but now I'm not so sure.
This morning I tried to do a Disk Utility from the install disk, only I'm a bit confused. This is supposed to find the hard drive, right? so I can do the tests to it and hopefully fix whatever problem there is? Because the utility was only finding the install disk, and then that got stuck and won't even eject (this is where I stopped because I had to leave for work). And when the install to where screen came up, there were no options for where to install the OS.
I haven't been able to get anywhere to run the hardware test or do a safe-boot or any of those options. I also have not yet called Apple or taken the mac into a store.
So I am starting to think that perhaps my hard drive is screwed. Am I right, or are there other things I should try first? (And if anyone has any suggestions for how to get that install disk to eject, I'd love to hear them--every time I tried that from the Disk Utility screen, I got an error.)

    Hello b:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
To eject the disk, restart the computer while holding the mouse button down.
The rest of it sounds like hardware, but without being able to boot from the software install DVD, I cannot think of a way to go further. I would take the computer to an Apple store for diagnosis.

  • Issue with ASM disk

    Hello,
When using database configuration assistant to configure ASM and create disk group, it can't find any disk. I've tried to chage disk discovery path by using 'ORCL:*', '/dev/oracleasm/disk/*' and install procedure is as follow:
    TIA,
    Step 1 :
    # rpm -Uvh oracleasm-support-2.0.3-1.i386.rpm \
    oracleasm-2.6.9-42.0.0.0.1.ELsmp-2.0.3-2.i686.rpm \
    oracleasmlib-2.0.2-1.i386.rpm
    Step 2 :
    #vi /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices
    add a line
    /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdb1
To bind the disk devices to the raw devices, enter the following command:
    # /sbin/service rawdevices restart

    Hi,
Me also facing same issue while creating ASM.
i done what you said, but now also i'm facing same issue. Please find below steps what i did.
    1) ]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sdb7
Marking disk "VOL1" as an ASM disk: [FAILED]
    2) then i enter the raw devices in the below directory
    ]# vi /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices
    /dev/raw/raw7 /dev/sdb7
    3) then i changed the ownership root to oinstall
    4) then i given the permissions to the raw device
    5) after that i given the below command
    ]# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/raw/raw7 bs=1M count=100
dd: opening `/dev/raw/raw7': Device or resource busy
    6) Then i tried the below way
    ]# dd if=/dev/zero of=/devsdb7 bs=1M count=100
    100+0 records in
    100+0 records out
    104857600 bytes (105 MB) copied, 0.077255 seconds, 1.4 GB/s
    7) then i tried to create the ASM Diskgroup but again i got same issue.
Can you please give suggession to me it's very important to me

  • Issues with "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility under Mavericks

When I run the verify disk option in the disk utility I get different functions listed each time I run and sometimes it does not run to completion;  however, when it runs to completion it states that everything is okay.
I did not have this issue before updating to Mavericks.
Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Don't use it, it is flawed. Just use Repair Disk. There is no point running Verify since it doesn't fix anything as Repair Disk does.

  • I am having issues with my Disk Utility.

I have a mid2012 Macbook Pro.  I installed Maverick about three weeks ago.  My computer has been a little spotty since then.  But since yesterday, my computer isn't booting up; a folder with a question mark is flashing.  So I started up the internet recovery, trying to reinstall OS X or disk repairs.  I don't think it can find my hard drive to do repairs or reinstall OS X.  What do I do?

Do you have a Standard MBP or one with a Retina screen?
    Flashing ? Mark.

But in the end it is more than likely what was pointed out above, failed drive or failed cable.

  • Issues with lost disk space in Lion

    Hello everybody,
I just bought a Sandisk 16gb usb stick and installed the Lion operating system on it, worked fine initially but after about 3 hours error message appeared telling me there is no more disk space. I know there is this is the problem.
The same thing happened earlier when Lion was installed on the main harddrive so i decided to reinstall Snow Leopard instead.
Does anyone know how to solve this one?
    Thanks in advance

No idiot, this isn't a usual issue and without evoking hidden files would probably have never found it.
Yes, you can safely delete the sleepimage file. It should only save what you have in memory at the time your Mac sleeps but must have gotten corrupted at some point. Your Mac will create a new sleepimage file, which hopefully will not behave the same way.
    EDIT: Found this also...
