Issues After Disabling IPv6 on Your NIC on SBS 2008

If you uncheck the IPv6 protocol from your network interface card on your Windows SBS 2008 server you may see the following issues after a reboot:
Microsoft Exchange services fail to start
Server hangs at “Applying Computer Settings…” (can eventually logon after 30 – 60 minutes)
Network icons show as offline

  • RDS 2012 issues after disabling SSL 3.0

Hi all, we have Server 2012 R2 RDS infrastructure. I have 2 servers running RD web, gateway, and conn broker using Windows network load balancing. 3 RDSH servers behind them handling user workload.
Last night I disabled SSL 3.0 on both of these servers using the registry key 'Enabled' set to zero in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 3.0\Server. Servers were rebooted after this change.
I did not disable SSL 3.0 on the RDSH servers yet, but I don't think it matters in this situation because the SSL traffic only passes between the remote computer and the RDGW server, AFAIK.
Today all the remote users were having issues with remote desktop sessions disconnecting them, but they would reconnect after a short time. They all told me this is unusual, normally the connections are quite stable. After I turned SSL 3.0 back on and rebooted,
no more issues, users are happy. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything that can be done to stabilize connections while SSL 3.0 is disabled?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Did they receive any precise error when SSL3 is disabled?
What’s your client OS and RDP version using for your network?
If you would like to continue with SSL3 disabled you may try to change the RDP Security Layer under Security Layer.
When you are using RD Security Layer you are susceptible to MITM attack because there is no Server Authentication. I suggest you re-enable TLS 1.0 and have a ssl certificate from a public authority set on your RDP-Tcp listener.
You can also refer this article for other information.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Will Disabling IPv6 harm a Windows 8 or Server 2012 R2?

I have a script that was written for Windows 7 and server 2008. I would like to know if it was harm a Windows 8 or any build of Server 2012 box. If so, could you please list what it would harm.
It was create to help with speed issues for an older network based program.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi:
I don't think anyone can say for sure if it would cause any harm to any build of Windows 8 or Server 2012Rx.  No one would have tested disabling IPV6 on all the possible combinations.  The conventional wisdom is to NOT disable IPV6, but given special
circumstances I suppose it might be done:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2008/10/24/issues-after-disabling-ipv6-on-your-nic-on-sbs-2008.aspx
While written for Server 2008 and SBS 2008, you might want to check the above link for ideas.  About half way down it discusses some considerations.
Are you still running some older program that might benefit from this?  If so, have you actually tested it without disabling IPV6 on say one server and one station.  It would be easy enough to test then reverse the changes if there was no perceived
    benefit.

  • EA3500 Smart Wi Fi - How to disable IPV6 to address Parental Control Issue

    Hi
I've been reading that parental controls does not work with IPV6.
I would like to disable IPV6.
    How would I do that?
P.S.: I noticed responses for EA4500 that there is a check box to disable the IPV6.  Very straight forward but my interface
does not have the same layout of the GUI.
    Thanks

Hi petroski1,  the process of disabling IPv6 in your router depends if you’re using the Classic user interface or the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi. You may refer to this link, for instructions: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&app=vw&vw=1&login=1&json=1&docid=bd520bcb07a6474596169...
If you’re using the Classic one, select IPv6 under the Setup tab and just disable it. And if you’re also using the Linksys Smart WI-Fi, go to Connectivity, select Internet settings, click on IPv6 click edit and make sure to uncheck the enable box.

  • Disabling ipv6 in iOS 8 and/or Airport base station

I recently replaced my iPhone 4 running iOS 7 with an iPhone 6 running iOS 8.0.2.  The iPhone 4 never had any problem accessing wifi, whether at home, at work, or at various other locations.
Ever since getting the iPhone 6 I've been unable to get the wifi to work properly while at home using the wireless net work run from my Time Capsule.  It works fine if I connect to a Verizon FiOS wireless router.  It works fine at work (Cisco wifi gear, I believe).  It works fine at places like Starbucks, etc.  It only appears to have issues with connecting to the Time Capsule.  When I connect the phone to my Time Capsule I get a strong wifi signal, it's just that anything internet related times out after a long period of time.  I'm completely unable to access anything whether in Safari, Mail, or anything else.
I've searched the forums, Google, etc. for help and I've tried re-installing iOS, resetting my wireless network settings, disabling wifi location services, etc. but none of that has helped.  It just occurred to me that one big difference between the Time Capsule and most (if not all) of the other wifi access points I'm able to successfully connect to is that the Time Capsule and the iPhone appear to enable ipv6 by default.  I'm wondering if the iPhone is trying to establish an ipv6 connection through the Time Capsule.  That could certainly explain why all internet access just times out on my iPhone when connected to the Time Capsule.
So as a test, is there any way to completely disable ipv6 on either the Airport/Time Capsule and/or on the iPhone itself?  I would love to be able to test this theory out.

    This is exactly my point!
Looking at the structure of your network in your post the gigabit wired computers can speak to each other at gigabit speeds but a gigabit wired computer CANNOT speak to an AppleTV through the Wireless 'n' Router at wireless 'n' speeds UNLESS the router has gigabit capable ports.
I can't find one that has, so the maximum speed of transmission of data from a wired computer with iTunes through the wireless 'n' router to a wireless 'n' AppleTV can only be as fast as the ports on the router which is 10/100 mbps which is far below the speeds capable over wireless 'n'.
To put it simply the only way to get wireless 'n' speed transmissions to AppleTV is to feed the data to the base station using wireless 'n' because a wired connection just isn't fast enough (even if the computer has a gigabit ethernet port and is connected to a gigabit switch) because the 10/100 mbps ethernet ports on the base station are a major bottleneck!
I can't believe they didn't think of this!!!

  • CSCus07365 - should I not use DNS local database at all or I can enable it again after disabling?

I had an issue with my RV320 that it suddenly stops answering DNS queries from my LAN. I just found out that a new firmware was released last month (v1.1.1.19), and one of its "known issues" is bug id CSCus07365 according to the release notes:
Sometimes the DNS process is gone and can not reply the DNS request from LAN network.
Solution: Check if you have enabled DNS local database feature on RV320/325, disable it, and then configure and save the WAN setting page again.
From that description I am not sure if this is a one-time issue after upgrading (so that I should disable and re-enable it), or if this is still a current issue and it will be better to keep away from DNS local database at all until a new firmware is released.
    Thanks in advance!

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Networking Issues after Upgrading to Windows 8.1

I have a Windows 8 desktop PC that is working fine with my network.  I can browse the Internet fine using all major browsers etc.  After upgrading to Windows 8.1 through the Windows Store I noticed that my wired networking was not working correctly.
The status of the network does not change (i.e. it doesn't change to Limited Connectivity) however browsing to sites in Chrome, IE or Firefox doesn't work as well as Windows 8.
IE11 gives me the error "This page can't be displayed, make sure the web address is correct" and other browsers give a similar error.  I normally have to refresh 2-3 times to get a new page to load, sometimes even more.  Everything works
fine from a laptop connected at the same time so it isn't an network issue with my provider.
I thought this might be a driver issue with the two on-board Marvell wired network adapters.   I wasn't able to rollback the driver to older versions I found on the Internet.  I then purchased another network card, Intel Desktop gigabit and the
issue still persists with that adapter.  I then tried a USB wireless adapter and the issue still persists using wifi with the wired adapters disabled.  I tried a new network cable and no luck either.  I also tried resetting the IP stack using
    the various netsh commands.
After that I thought I might try reset the Windows 8.1 PC, however that didn't work as I didn't have the restore image available as I upgraded from the Windows Store.  I then tried installing Windows 8.1 fresh using a ISO with my Windows 8 key using
some of the recent guides that are available.  That all worked but it didn't fix the networking issues.
I re-installed Windows 8.0 and the networking is now fixed and back to working normal again.  I'd like to try again but I think I will have the same problems.  I can't imagine why this would be a driver issue as I tried 3 different network adapters
and two installs of Windows 8.1.  Any ideas what would be the cause of the Windows 8.1 issue?

    HI,
Since this issue only occurred in the your desktop PC, and many network adapters you tried, failed, thus I think maybe we should focus on the model of your desktop PC, I suggest you update the BIOS and chipset from the manufacture to improve
    the performance of win8.1.
Please also test this issue in safe mode with networking.
    Please refer to:

The issue occurs in safe mode as well under Windows 8.1.  The motherboard is an Asus P5B Premium, however it works on Windows 8.  How would I update the chipset when booted into Windows 8.1?  In Device Manager it wasn't allowing me to update
the network drivers as they were newer versions already installed.
Edit:  I also installed at Intel Chipset Device software dated 8/8/2013 with version 9.4.0.1026 and the issue still occurs.  I am also running the latest BIOS that is available.

  • Lumia 1520 Battery Discharge Issue After Updating ...

After updating to Denim, my Nokia Lumia 1520 started to experience the following symptoms:
Phone charges to 100%, I disconnect and use an app like Instagram BETA, Internet Explorer, Lumia Camera, or any game--after no more than 5 minutes of use, the phone gives a "Critical Low Battery" alert and shuts down. If I try to restart phone immediately, it makes it to the AT&T splash screen or lockscreen and then same battery message appears and shuts down. If I wait 10-15 minutes after the shutdown to restart phone (without recharging) the phone will stay on, but battery level will report to be in the low 20s or 10s (whereas no more than 20 minutes ago, it was 100%).
When phone is at 100% battery: I take 2-5 photos or record mere seconds of video and I get the same "Critical Low Battery" alert. Upon restarting, some of the photos or video are nonexistent or corrupt files and battery level is reported at 2-5%.
However, if my phone is plugged in to charger, none of these "Critical Low Battery" alerts come up and I am able to use phone as usual. Considering that I cannot take a vacation and capture nature's beauty with an AC adapter always connected, this is a serious drawback.
    Steps I've Taken:
    Soft-reset
    Full factory-reset
Moved all apps off microSD card (this improved situation maybe 5%)
Disabled almost all background app use in Battery Saver
Replaced microSD card when I thought this was a memory write/read issue
Installed "Battery" app to monitor battery use. After 750 data points were logged, my average battery life is reported at "16 minutes," which sounds about right.
My warranty should be expired since I purchased the phone December 2013, so I'm checking in here if anybody has had any luck with battery replacements or with a solution to this issue? At the same time, this issue arose strictly after updating to Denim and I've seen other users report this EXACT scenario. Is there any hope for Lumia 1520 users on this?
    Other reported cases:

  • HT4667 How to disable IPv6 on MAC OS X Lion?

    Hi everyone,
I am using Macbook Air OS X Lion. I have been facing slow internet browsing problem from quite a while now. I checked the forums and found that lot of people are facing the same problem. Also found that disabling IPv6 or setting it to manual mode will help fixing the issue. But another big challenge is how to do it. I tried setting it to manual which would need router address, IPv6 address and prefix length which is supposed to be collected from your ISP. Unfortunately Comcast hasnt implemented IPv6 yet so couldnt find that information. Also couldnt find the disable option as mentioned in one of the Apple article.
So I am stuck with Macbook air with slow internet speed. If anybody could help, it would be much apprecaited.
    Thanks,
    SJ

  • Firefox 7 is terribly slow even after disabling plugins and complete reinstall

Since upgrading to 7.0, and 7.0.1, I have had major problems with Firefox tabs being stuck on "Connecting..." and never loading the web page. Occasionally this is accompanied by a crash. I have disabled all extensions, disabled IPv6, dnsPrefetch, removed and reinstalled the app with a new blank profile and the issue continues. I also disabled Sophos, the security suite I am currently using. I never ran into any of these issues in version 6. I am currently running the roboform plugin but I have disabled this previously in an attempt to resolve the issue.

Go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Network and click Settings under Connection. Try no proxy (or if that's what it currently is, try system default).
I'd also check again for security software. Sometimes "disable" just means it doesn't block incoming traffic but it still restricts outgoing. You may also have other security software (it may get installed with stuff like Skype or come bundled with your computer).

  • Disabling IPv6 on 2008R2 Domain Controllers... Best Practice?

At the end of last year I had a call with Microsoft Support in which I spoke with a member of the Directory Services team regarding an issue.  The issue was resolved with no further problems, but while conversing with the Technical Support Engineer
I queried him on another issue regarding a second copy of our DNS zone in Active Directory.  He looked at it (remoted in via RDP) then looked at my NIC properties and stated that the reason it happened is because we are running IPv6 on our DCs.
I told him we do that on all our servers. (leave IPv6 enabled.)  He then stated that we should not do that, expanding by saying that "Microsoft is in the process of rewriting documentation as IPv6 is no longer supported on Domain Controllers."
Needless to say I could not believe this.  I told him how Exchange on an SBS server cannot have IPv6 disabled as the server will stop booting, but he was very adamant about it; he even put me on hold for 10 minutes then came back saying he confirmed
that this is the case and spoke with the "Documentation Team" and the new Best Practices would be released within the next month. In the meantime he recommended I disable IPv6 on all my DCs. (I work in Consulting so that's a lot of DCs at various different
    business entities.)
I didn't believe him then, and I don't believe him now.  Reviewing the FAQ linked through http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929852  Says that Microsoft does not recommend disabling IPv6.  Of course no documentation ever came out, nor have I
found anything to agree with his statements. (we solved the duplicate partition issue ourselves.)
I just wanted to post here and see if anyone else has heard of this, maybe I'm the one not up and up on my info.  Has or does Microsoft plan on reversing course on the new IPv6 technology that 2008 and up are built on?  I would think that quite
    preposterous!
    Thanks,
    Christopher Long
Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge. -- Carl Sagan

There are cases where you DO WANT to disable IPv6 on a domain controller.
Example: you have an IPV4 network and do not have IPV6 deployed. In this case if you are not using IPv6 but leave it enabled than Windows will assign itself an IPv6 at random via the APIPA process. That IP address can and does change when you reboot the
server.... So I bet you see the problem here.
If you build a domain controller with IPv6 enabled - it will register it's IPV6 address in DNS as offering AD services. Then when you reboot that domain controller and that address changes - BOOM. AD comes crashing down. AD relies heavily on DNS. Windows
thinks it's smarter than you and registers it's IPv6 address obtained via APIPA in DNS. Now that's a problem. Particularly because Win Server 2008+ prefer IPV6 over IPV4 networks. So communication can blow up even if a valid IPv4 network is available.
So yes - there are instances where you do want to - in fact need to - disable IPv6 on domain controllers. Microsoft's documentation does not reflect this but it should. At a minimum if they want you to leave it on they should at least remind you to set a
static IPv6 address if you're running an IPv4 network.
(ask me how I know all this over a beer some time)
I opted to just disable it. Despite MS's documentation warning of the contrary - I've seen no adverse impacts. Exchange, Sharepoint, AD, etc. all humm along fine.

  • Rules are disabled after disabling/enabling account.

    Hi,
I have an applescript that enables or disables my work account depending on whether or not I have a VPN connection. My problem occurs when:
    1. The work account is disabled
    2. Mail is restarted
    3. The work account is enabled again
At this point all of my rules associated with the work account are disabled. I can't imagine that this is the intended behavior.
I can re-enable all of the rules with Applescript, but it seems like I shouldn't have to.
The problem can be reproduced without using Applescript by disabling/enabling the account in Mail preferences.

A little more info on the subject of rules, monitors, and alerting:
Alerts based off of Rules will not close themselves, they will always need to be closed manually. If they were alerts based off of Monitors they would (in most cases) close themselves after disabling them. If you don't want to script closing the alerts based
off the rules you can always filter or sort your alerts in the console and select all or selectively select the ones you want to close all at once and then right click and close the alerts based off rules. One other thing, for alerts based off monitors
it is usually best to reset the health of an object and let the monitor close itself rather than close an alert based of a monitor if you have a need to close it. That is unless something funky happened where the health of the object changed to healthy
and for some reason the alert didn't close in which case you can close it. The reason you dont want to just close an alert based off a monitor is because it wont reset the health of the object being monitored and will therefore not re-alert if the issue returns.

  • How i get by with the sleep, pause issue after 1.0.2 update

ok. i'm sure you guys are aware of the ipod sleeping/pausing issue after updating your ipod to 1.0.2. my ipod will pause whenever it is in the jensen dock station and the green battery indicator shows up. whenever i use the dock or remote to unpause the song, a few seconds later, it pauses again. so instead of using the dock or remote to play, unpause, whatever, i connect the ipod to the dock and use the wheel to navigate and 'only' use the play/pause button on the ipod itself to kick off the playing of music. if i go back to the remote, the ipod pauses. if i only use the menu and play/pause button on the wheel, my songs do not pause. it sure was nice using the remote before 1.0.2. i mean, it did come with the dock for my remoting pleasure but alas, i shall wait on the next update. hope this helps someone.

I will have to try that... I took my iPod to work today and plugged it into my JBL docking station and it was skipping. I did notice it seemed to go to sleep more often when I used the remote... There's a whole other forum on this maybe you could check out too. But it's really annoying and I hope Apple comes out with a fix soon! I will definitely try to use the iPod wheel tomorrow and not the remote.

  • X201 severely crippled after disabling Intel AMT / AT in BIOS

    Hi all,
My X201 has been running great for a number of weeks now, but somehow I managed to pretty much destroy it.  Before going to do a fresh install (been trial testing different antivirus packages) I went into BIOS by hitting F1 during boot and disabled Intel AMT and Intel AT.  Since these are enterprise features I didn't think I would need them at the house here.
After disabling both and doing a save-and-quit, I got a screen saying something to the effect of "configuration updated" and it rebooted.  Except now it takes about 1 full minute to get through POST and hitting F1 takes about 15 seconds before BIOS configuration is shown.  Here is what I have observed since disabling AMT and AT...
    1) CPU fan is now disabled. The left side of the unit will get so hot it will burn your finger.
    2) From main BIOS screen, choosing the "Config" option will cause it to hang and freeze.
    3) From main BIOS screen, choosing the "Security" option will no longer show the "Intel AMT" menu option so there seemingly no way to reenable it.
    4) Waiting over a minute to get through POST and it will still boot the OS, but even when running Win7 the CPU fan will not enable.
    5) During various stages of boot (initial power-on and right after hitting F1 to get into BIOS) the CPU fan will turn on for no more than 2 seconds and then turn back off.
My 2 immediate ideas to fix this haven't panned out...
-- Created a BIOS update CD from the .iso available in the support section.  Booting from CD works but it says something to the effect of "BIOS does not been to be updated.  Process is cancelled."
-- Googling around I have been unable to find any reference to a jumper on the X201 mainboard to clear CMOS or any reference to a CMOS Clear button.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and knows a fix, or knows how to clear CMOS on the X201?  I still have over a year left on the factory warranty but I'd like to fix this myself if I can.

    knacky805:
Resetting the CMOS should resolve the issue, if you are comfortable opening your Thinkpad, you can try that. What you'll want to do is unplug the AC adapter, open up the Thinkpad, remove the battery, then the CMOS, press the power button a few times to ensure you drain the capacitors. You can then replace all components starting with the CMOS and it should restore all the default settings in BIOS including the Intel AMT settings.
Please note: Use an electrostatic discharge (ESD) strap to establish personal grounding, If you don't, you can make sure you and the computer are at Zero Potential by continuously touching an un-painted metal surface of the Thinkpad chassis.
Let us know if this solves your problem!

  • Disable ipv6 on Cisco VG224

We have a vulnerability scanner that we use and it has picked up that our Voice GW has a "Cisco IPv6 Crafted Packet Vulnerability"
I entered the commands "no ipv6 unicast-routing" and "no ipv6 cef" the next scan is in a weeks time, but would these have done the trick?
    Thank you
    Bilal

Qualys vulnerability scanner, the version of ios is vg224-i6k9s-mz.124-24.T5.bin
    The report states:
IPv6 is the "Internet Protocol Version 6", designed by the Internet  Engineering Task Force (IETF) to replace Internet Protocol Version 4  (IPv4). A vulnerability exists in the processing of IPv6 packets. Crafted  packets from the local segment received on logical interfaces (that is,  tunnels including 6to4 tunnels) as well as physical interfaces can  trigger this vulnerability. Crafted packets cannot traverse a 6to4  tunnel and attack a box across the tunnel.
The crafted packet must be sent from a local network segment to  trigger the attack. This vulnerability cannot be exploited one or more  hops from the IOS device.
NOTE: This check requires that the "Clear Text Password" check box is enabled in your Authentication Preferences.
    IMPACT:
Successful exploitation of the vulnerability on Cisco IOS may  result in a reload of the device or execution of arbitrary code.  Repeated exploitation could result in a sustained denial of service  attack or execution of arbitrary code on Cisco IOS devices. Successful exploitation of the vulnerability on Cisco IOS-XR may  result in a restart of the IPv6 neighbor discovery process. A restart of  this process will only affect IPv6 traffic passing through the system.  All other processes and traffic will be unaffected. Repeated  exploitation could result in a sustained denial of service attack on  IPv6 traffic.
    SOLUTION:
Cisco has made free software available to address this vulnerability for all affected customers. Workaround:
In networks where IPv6 is not needed but enabled, disabling IPv6  processing on an IOS device will eliminate exposure to this  vulnerability. On a router which is configured for IPv6, this must be  done by issuing the command "no ipv6 enable" and "no ipv6 address" on  each interface.
    VG224-1(config)#no ipv6 enable
                                                   ^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
    VG224-1(config)#int fa0/0
    VG224-1(config-if)#no ipv6 enable
    VG224-1(config-if)#int fa0/1
    VG224-1(config-if)#no ipv6 enable
What does the note in bold mean? There's no check box in cli :-/
    Thank you
