Issues concerning electronic forms in Acrobat 7

If anyone has some expertise in the way electronic forms
react in version 7, maybe you can help me.
No problem building the form and fields generally work fine. The form is designed to fill electronically but print for mailing. There are three distinct problems I run into when I tested the fill and print options:
1) Even though it's not supposed to, the form retains the information in all the fields, even after closing out the browser and reopening. Browser is Explorer 6.0, running on XP.
2) I created 2 value fields, which work fine, but print with a color in the field. This is different than the color one can assign to a field, and I assigned no color to all the fields, but I still get a color on those 2 fields. And the color changes, too - sometimes it's light blue, sometimes dark blue (both from the same test system), and from a different computer it prints light purple!
3) It takes a long time to print. The original document is created using InDesign CS2, converted to PDF and then the fields are added. The problem seems to be in the flattening of the document, which takes awhile. I figure there must be a way to optimize the printing, but nothing I've tried has made a difference. There are some graphics placed in the original ID file, including a gradient color area (part of our branding which I need to retain).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

> 1) Even though it's not supposed to, the form retains the information in all the fields, even after closing out the browser and reopening. Browser is Explorer 6.0, running on XP.
The user can control the autocaching and autocomplete by Arcrobat and Reader. The author of the form can disable this bahavior for the distributed form using JavaScript.

This is usually a print driver issue.

  • Electronic forms with Acrobat 7 Standard

I need to create a form that users with Acrobat Reader can fill out electronically, and then print. They don't need to be able to save their forms or submit them electronically. The requirement is that they simply fill the form out and then print. Can I accomplish this with Acrobat 7 Standard?
    Thanks!
    Luis

No. You will need Acrobat 7 Professional to create the form template. Acrobat 7 Standard does not have form tools.

  • Acrobat version conflict when opening an electronic form

I have created an electronic form using Acrobat 9.0 that takes advantage of users being able to open, edit and save the form using Reader 9.0. The form includes a version-checking javascript to ensure users minimally have Reader 8.0 or 9.0 installed so that they can properly modify & save.
Unfortunately, some users have Acrobat 7.0 Standard installed on their system, and despite the fact they have set Reader 9.0 as the default application to globally open files having the .pdf extension, they're running into a problem where they always get a "wrong version" error message involving Acrobat 7.0 when trying to open the form, even from within Reader. The only remedy we've found so far is to remove the Acrobat 7.0 Standard program from their system.
Of course, this is not satisfactory, since they need to be able to modify their own and other files using their Acrobat 7.0 Standard, and do not wish to upgrade to a newer version at this time.
We'd sure appreciate any assistance or solutions with this dilemma.
    Thanks in Advance,

    Hello Michael,
Thanks for your helpful response. I was not aware of any limitation for users to prevent an installation of both Acrobat and Reader on the same system. Many of us have both in order that we can use Acrobat to develop our documents, then use the free Reader program to test and verify their function as our users will experience them.
FYI, the javascript in the form is set up to check if the user has Reader 8 or better and close the doc if not. The reason for this is that users of the form need to be able to fill the form plus add personal stamps and such -- then save their changes -- which function was only implemented at version 8.
    Here is the javascript used:
    if (app.viewerVersion < 8) {
app.alert("You must have Acrobat Reader 8.0 or better to use this form.\n\nYou can find more information about and download the latest version FREE by going to http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/")
        this.closeDoc(true)
I see one solution to this that our "super user" who uses both Acrobat 7 and needs to open the form in Reader could consider setting up a second system which has Acrobat 7 installed, with Reader only installed on their main system. This is probably not very feasible though, since there will likely be a group (as many as 5-10) of super users here needing to use our form in this way.
Please let me know your opinion.
    Many thanks again,

  • Issue while changing fields in a fillable form PDF (Acrobat 10.1.4 Pro)

    Good Afternoon!
This is my first time posting here, so forgive me if this is in the wrong place.
I am an IT technician trying to support a user who is trying to change a PDF into a fillable form using Acrobat 10.1.4.  She is trying to use the wizard as shown in the image below:
When she uses this function, Acrobat goes through and automatically detects all possible fields and creates them for her.  Below is an image of the result:
What she is trying to do is change some of the field types - specifically, she wants to change the box next to "Adult/non-college request" to a check box.  She right clicks on this field to change it, and when she does, Acrobat simply closes.  No error comes up, and she is not given the option to save the document - when she opens it again, it is an ordinary PDF.  In addition, if she creates the form, and then only tries to save the form (without trying to change the fields), Acrobat again simply closes itself.  However, she is able to manually create fillable fields if she does not use the wizard at all, and the document functions normally.
Any help with this issue would be most appreciated.

    Save early and often.
I would save the result right after the wizard has made its errors.
One needs to delete the form field and then manually add the correct type of field. If you want that check box and the next to be mutually exclusive, one gives them the same name and sets the export value for each check box to a unique value.
I edit forms by opening the "Tools => Forms => Edit fields".
How to create editable PDF form fields
I do not like the wizards and create forms by adding all form fields manually according to my planned form design.

  • Issue when opening PDF forms in Acrobat X

First, pardon me if this is the incorrect forum for this post.  I did not locate any general technical support board for Acrobat X but I could have missed it.
I have a user who has Adobe Acrobat X Standard (10.1.6) installed on his computer system.  He is able to generate PDF files and open regular PDF files without issues.  However, if he opens up any PDF which is a form, Acrobat immediately crashes.  His computer is a Windows 7 Professional x64 system.  Antivirus on the system is GFI Vipre Business.
Here is what I have tried:
Update Acrobat with the latest patches/updates.
Different Windows profile with administrator rights.
Removed Acrobat and reinstall through normal convential means.
Removed Acrobat via tool at http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html.
Remove Acrobat and then do a manual clean of the registry and Windows Explorer.
Cleaned up fonts on the system.  This might not have been done right but based on the error, perhaps you all can offer suggestions on if this error is related to font issues.
I would perform a system restore, but this user is unsure of when this issue started happening exactly.  So, we'd be in the dark on this.  The only thing that I can think I haven't tried is a wipe of the computer.
    Here are the specific errors:
This error is received when trying to directly open a form PDF on the system:
Title: Font Capture: Acrobat.exe - Bad Image
Message: C:\Windows\system32\ATMLIB.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.  Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Anyone have any other suggestions?  I'd appreciate any advice.
    Thank you!

Hi, I am having the same problem as your user when I try to open a pdf form in acrobat. I also have had a similar problem, still unresolved, described here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5146964.
I can't find any solutions. I even tried uninstalling Acrobat X pro and instead gong back to installing Acrobat 9. Same problems persist. Don't know what to do.

  • I created a form using acrobat XI pro.  SOME users of the form cannot save the form.  what can i do from my side to 'correct' the issue?

  • Electronic forms on iPad?

ipad noob question. bear with me...
I'm thinking of purchasing an ipad for work. I have several electronic forms (like checksheets) that I would like to load to the ipad, and then print them as I fill them out. Is this possible? I've looked at the printing issue, and see printing is supported from inside certain apps only. Also, would the ipda's ability to open pdf forms mean that if the form is a checklist, it'd allow me to fill out the form and save it? If not, is there an ipad specific app that would allow me to create forms, fill them out, and print them?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

Celliott147, thanks for the help and advice.
What you are suggesting has already been written. It's Called The Acrobat Reader and has a complete back engine and server for collecting, exporting, and connecting to an SQL database.
Every company has Time Sheets for its employees. As you know, the key to productivity is to collect the data at the source and be done with it, subject to controls.
The data has to be integrated to the databases in real time, so that Job Numbers, Employees, Job Cost codes, POs, Materials used, production achieved can be delt with and updated without the need for secondary key entry.
Here we have the perfect from factor, the iPad, that can be carried into the field, connected to the internet and remote databases. All that is needed is support for free software that is on 85% of all computers in the world.
If I started coding today with a team of engineers, to create all of the functions required, all of that work would be for not with the first platform that fully supports the Acrobat Reader.

  • Digital signatures not working for LiveCycle forms in Acrobat Reader

Hello, when I create a Form in LiveCycle Designer with signature fields, I open the form in Acrobat XI and save the form with extended features (File-->Save As Other-->Extended Features-->Enable Tools), but then when I open the "extended features" form in Acrobat Reader, the signature fields do not work (click the field, but no signature prompt appears).  I do not have this problem when extended features are enabled in Acrobat X.  Why do they not work when they are enabled in Acrobat XI?

    Hi Adam LaClair,
Please try the steps mentioned below to get the issue fixed.
    1) For Windows :-

  • Reader Extending Designer Form in Acrobat Pro 8

    Dear All,
Last year I managed to put together an organisational survey where users fill in a form created in Designer 7.0 and then hit a submit button which spits all entered data out to an MS Database. It worked great.
I reader extended this survey to work on adobe reader 7.0 as that was what was installed on most of the client machines at the time.
Now I am revising the survey for 2008 but running into a problem which has just about got the better of me.
No matter what I do, running the reader extended form in adobe reader ver x.x does not submit the entered data to the database. Yet if I run it in Acrobat Pro or the preview tab through Designer, it works fine.
For simplicity, I have created a test form.
It only has a text field which is linked to a field within an MS database. The MS database only has 1 field.
The form then has a submit button which contains the following java code for the click event.
    xfa.sourceSet.test.update();
    xfa.sourceSet.test.close();
    app.alert("Worked!!!!");
Another button (which is set to invisible) contains the following java code
    xfa.sourceSet.test.open();
    xfa.sourceSet.test.addNew();
which is triggered on the initialize event.
All works fine until I have to open the form in Acrobat Pro 8 to reader extend it. The saved reader extended version when opened in any reader version, does nothing when clicking the submit button. Yet I know it has been successfully reader extended because when opening in reader 7.0 it says you can save data entered in this form.
I have tried with Designer 7.0 but same thing.
When I open the form I created in early 2007 in Reader 7.0 and it works I sit mystified and say "How?"
The issue is definetly with the reader extending.
Any guidance will be greatly appreciated as I have exhausted all avenues I can think of.
    Thanking You in advance.
    Daniel

Acrobat 8 Professional includes LiveCycle Designer 8, so if the form was created with LiveCycle Designer 8 or older, the yes should have the option to edit the form. Acrobat 8 Professional under the menu option 'Forms' will have an option to open the form in LiveCycle Designer. If the form was created with a newer version, there could be some issues with newer features not available in version 8.

  • Troubles creating a form with Acrobat

I have created a form with Acrobat 9 Pro. However, when it is brought up with Acrobat Reader, the following message appears:
Sending data files by email: Please note, this form contains an email submit button. Clicking this button will email a data file... However, the form itself will not be sent. Remember you cannot save a complete file of this form with Adobe Reader 9.
When the submit button is clicked, the following message is posted on a popup window.
    Operation not permitted.
Here's the link to a form I am trying to get to work. It works fine if I use the Pro version, but the Reader version doesn't want to allow the form to be sent. http://www.drugfreedekalbcounty.info/pdf/interventionscholarshipform.pdf
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It may have been improved with AA9, but at least up through AA8, Acrobat required the use of MAPI on the machine to deal with e-mail. If that has changed, then the other recommendation to use extended rights might meet your need. There is a 500 use limitation for the extended rights (more requires negotiation with Adobe). This may be a limitation that changed with AA9 Pro Extended.
The rights are not needed if the data file is sent and not the whole PDF. There is no need for the whole PDF since the data file can be opened in the original form document - giving the same result. Your observation that it works in AA9 for e-mail is making the assumption that everyone uses AA9. That is a dangerous assumption if you are developing a general use form. You should assume folks have back to AA7, or even AA5 (like I have on this machine). There are still a few that check in here on occasions with AA4. I have not seen an AA3 question for several years. Thus backward compatibility may be an issue, depending on your client base.
The cleanest way to work with forms is to submit to a web script. Then there is no question about the end result. The use of web scripts is even recommended for online html forms for much the same reasons. I was giving a heads up so that you have considered possible users that do not have the newest and best, assuming that the latter resolves the e-mail issue.

  • Edit a form in Acrobat but NOT in Designer

I have Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1.7 on Windows XP SP3. What I want to know is how to edit a form in Acrobat without using LiveCycle Designer. Here's the issue: with a PDF open (generated via either a print job or File>Create PDF) under the Forms menu the first option is 'Create New Form...' and the second - greyed out - is 'Edit Form in Acrobat'. The problem is that if I run the option 'Create New Form...' then when I return to the menu the second option - now available - is 'Edit Form in Designer'... but I don't want to use Designer I want to use Acrobat. What do I have to do to make the 'Edit Form in Acrobat' option available? Thank you.

    Bernd,
    THANK YOU!
If only the Help explained so simply and well for those of us who have barely used Acrobat...

  • Acrobat 9 Standard keeps opening my forms in Acrobat Reader XI.

It tells me that I cannot save data typed into the form.  Acrobat 9 Standard is set as the default for ALL .pdf documents.  If I right click the icon and choose "open with" and then select Acrobat 9, it will work, but if I double click the icon, it opens as Reader XI.  If I go to the area to select which program to use for this icon, I am getting asked "Keep Using Acrobat 9 Standard", as if that is what it's already doing.  It is not opening in 9 Standard, so I don't know what to do.  Registry error?  I need help, please!!!

  • HOW TO save PDF Forms in Acrobat Reader

    Hi,
I have made a timesheet form in Acrobat Professional. The idea with this is to put it on our intranet site and let my collegues register their working hours there (today we have an excel form).
The big advantage in using the PDF Form instead of the excel is the digital signatures function. This makes it possible for signing also when not in house - perfect in every aspect but....
...my collegues would like to save the timesheet before sending it. Printing is of no option since they are out on the road most of the time.
In Adobe Professional this is no problem but in Acrobat Reader you cannot save anything but an empty form. I have searched for security levels in the form but I cannot find anything. Howcome can't you save the document you have made as a copy in Reader? Is there a way of getting around this issue? I cannot put all collegues on the Adobe Professional program, it would be too expensive.
Please help! I hate having to go back to excel because of this malfunction.
    Best regards from Sweden
    Annika

Sorry, I was wrong, we don't have the professional suite. We purchased the Creative Suite 3 Design standard. However the Adobe Acrobat program itself is version 8 professional.
From what I understand the only way to make the form savable in Adobe reader for my collegues is that I buy also the Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions.
The price for this extension is 1500 USD.
To try to explain once more what I want to be done...
I am making forms for my collegues, where they can fill in their travelling costs, their working hours etc etc. This they have to do once an month and then send to their boss. BUT my collegues have only Adobe Acrobat reader, and with that program you can only save an empty form, ie the form empties itself when saving. But of course my collegues wants a copy of their working hours, travelling costs saved on their own computer. Prints are not acceptable.
Please help, I can't figure out how to open up the saving rights for my collegues in my adobe professional program...
Sorry for beeing so dumb, but I don't understand...

  • Are Distributed Forms created in Acrobat XI Pro compatible with Response Forms in Acrobat X Pro?

I want to be able to use distributed forms (created in Acrobat XI Pro) that I have received back through email with Acrobat X Pro.  That is, I want to be able to import the form information that is being sent back to me into a response form in Acrobat X Pro. Is this kind of "forward-compatible" issue possible?
Or, since I created the distributed forms in Acrobat XI Pro, can I only import data from those forms in an appropriate response from in Acrobat XI Pro?
    Thanks!

The distribution technique for email, network folder, or internal server haven't changed between Acrobat X and XI so you should be able to do this; however, it won't be managed through Tracker because you're distributing the form through different programs.

  • How do I create an electronic form

Is there a way, yet, to create an electronic form in Pages?

No. Other than to export as a.pdf and convert that to a form with Acrobat Pro.
Word's form ability relies on people having a comaptible version Word, which not everyone does and is bad practice in my view.
The Acrobat method at least lets you get the free Acrobat Reader to fill it in and it also works well with databases to collect the results filled in.
