Issues configuring a router print server

I have an ASUS RT-N13U router that I'm hoping to be able to print off of (printer - Canon i560).  I've set it up with a Windows computer and it works as expected, but I cannot get it to work on my Mac.  I can't seem to figure out what is going wrong.  In order to get it to work on my Windows computer, I used 192.168.1.1 and LPRServer and chose my specific printer (Canon i560), so I used the same parameters on my Mac.  I followed these steps: https://discussions.apple.com/message/8749886#8749886.
Once I set my printer up, I get the following message "Unable to verify the printer on your network.    It can not be currently determined if ‘192.168.1.1’ supports the Line Printer Daemon (protocol). Would you still like to create the queue?".  I choose to 'continue', but when I try to print the printer just says "The printer is busy."
I've been able to print off of USB for years, but I'd really like to be able to print wirelessly.
Your help is much appreciated, thank you!

LPD/LPR print queues often require a specific queue name. If this is not entered when creating the LPD queue on the Mac then you can get the "printer is busy" message.
Since you have the Windows computer working fine then I suggest you check the print queue on Windows for information on what queue name or protocol to use. This can be determined by opening the Properties pane for the printer and selecting the Ports tab. If you then select the Configure Ports tab this will show what protocol you are using. By default, Windows will default to RAW Port 9100, which is known as HP Jetdirect-Socket on the Mac. So if Windows is using this protocol for connecting via the Asus router then delete the current queue on the Mac and add it again, this time selecting HP Jetdirect-Socket for the protocol. If Windows is showing the queue has been configured using LPD, then it should also show what queue name has been used which you can the use to create a new LPD queue on the Mac.
One other note. The Canon Mac drivers cannot be used for some networked printer connections, such as when the printer is being shared by Windows or connected to a 3rd party print server. Instead you need to install and use the Gutenprint drivers. So you may need to look at using the Gutenprint i560 driver for your setup.

  • WIndows 7 64-bit system printing to a Windows 2000 server configured as a print server

Is there any way to configure a new Windows 7 64-bit computer to use a Windows 2000 server configured as a print server ?
The printer that I would like to connect to is an HP 4240n LaserJet. I appears that there is only a 64-bit Universal Print Driver available. The server currently uses HP 32-bit PCL5e or PCL6 drivers for all other connected computers. Connection is through a Hewlett-Packard Network Port, using DLC/LLC transport for the embedded 4240n print server.
Installing  the HP 64-bit UPD to the WIndows 7 64-bit system, and then attempting to redirect the local port to the Win2k network print server has not worked.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi:
    See if this works...
    Run msconfig.
In the System Configuration screen, Boot tab, Advanced Options, if there is a check mark in the box next to Maximum memory. Remove that checkmark and save your changes.
Reboot and hopefully Windows recognises all the Ram ( minus the reserved ) after restarting.
Please give that a try, and post back and let us know if that frees up some system memory for you.

  • Any suggestions for an all-in-one "cable modem router print server" (N)

any suggestions for an all-in-one "cable modem router print server" (N)?

If that's a problem with your cable company, change the company.
If your cable company is not able to provide you with a cable modem which gets you full performance for their service why would you bother with that company or try to make it better than them?
If you subscribe to a 100 Mbit/s service they must be able to provide you with a modem that does 100 Mbit/s and be able to demonstrate you 100 Mbit/s on your cable.
If they are unable to provide you with a modem which does 100 Mbit/s and thus cannot demonstrate that the service they have installed in fact can do 100 Mbit/s but only give you a 50 Mbit/s because that's the best they have, why bother buying yourself a better modem to find out whether or not their service does what it promises or not??
In addition, an integrated device won't get you better performance. On the contrary, consumer devices are generally single CPU (and core) devices. It's usually running some Linux or similar. If a single process gets overloaded it can drag down the performance of the whole device. For instance, let's say there is a bug in the print server software of the router. You print something and it hangs and the print server process on the router runs wild. Now the CPU is fully loaded and the routing performance will go down. If there is a bug in the routing software it will bring down the whole device and you can't even print.
You'll get the best performance if you use dedicated devices because then one device cannot overload another. Get a modem. Get a wireless ethernet router. Get a printer with integrated print server. That's far better.

  • Wireless router/Print Server w/ Ethernet Xbox 360

    Hey yall,
So I'm on day 2 of my new life as a "Mac guy". Threw down on a G5 and am pretty stoked. Still stock - I'm going to get another GB of RAM and AppleCare soon - and I'm also looking to get everything running wirelessly, including my HP PSC 1510 printer. I currently have Qwest DSL (1.5MB down), which I have configured wirelessly but don't have the router to print wirelessly. I have a 1-bdrm cabin w/ a loft, so I'd like to have the router/printer upstairs and just this pimp machine downstairs for all to see. I also have a Xbox 360 upstairs that I'd like to be able to connect via Ethernet to the router. The Airport Extreme BS would work - but it's 2 bills. Would this US Robotics Router w/ Print Server work?
    http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?TabPage=overview&sku=A0474 840&c=us&l=en&cs=19
I'd want to be able to return my rented router to Qwest - would this be one-stop shopping for me? Run internet/print service to the G5 downstairs and hardwire in my 360 upstairs? If so, that would be sweet. Also, the router says any USB printer would work - is that true? The HP PSC 1510 ain't exactly high-end - but I've also not opened it yet and would return it to get something that would work. Thanks a lot for any help, this fruity computer is pretty sweet!!

    iMac G5 2.1 GHz w/ iSight

    Hello,
Congratulations on your new Mac! My setup is similar to your own. I have my computer (iMac G5) hooked up wirelessly and I provide internet to my PS2 from the LAN hookup on the router.
I'm sorry that I can't give you an answer to the usefulness of the US Robotics router but, I can give you my experience with an Airport Express Base Station. I was fortunate enough to get one as a gift for Christmas and have been up and running ever since. ^^
First and foremost the Airport Express Base Station or AEX is Apple made and quite frankly works the best with your computer. You can plug your printer into it and also share your internet with your XBox 360 through the Ethernet port.
Though not as expensive as the Airport Extreme Base Station it is still about twice as expensive as the US Robotics one you labeled in your post. That is my setup in a nutshell except I don't have the XBox 360. ;p (jealous)
I just wanted to provide you a tested and tried solution that works. Good luck and wish you the best with your new setup. I know you are going to enjoy it and I agree about showing off your iMac, they are sweet looking.
    Best Regards,

  • Router Print Server Compatibility

I'm looking for a router that costs less than the Airport Express. I'm looking for a router that has a USB Print function that is compatible with OSX 10.8.5
I was looking at the AirStation™ HighPower N600 Gigabit, but their user manual only covers to 10.7 so I called them and they couldn't give me a good answer other than that many routers have been having print server problems with 10.8 of Mac. Anyone have a Router w/ USB Print capability that works with OSX 10.8.5?

Usualy, anything working with 10.7 works with 10.8.
The reason the Airport Extreme/express work so conveniently is because there is proprietary software embedded that makes the USB port an extension of your Mac's USB. This is valuable for non-postscript, USB-only printers (mostly inkjets fit this description). When I say USB-only, I mean that, except for Brother, all the manufacturers have decided to give us USB-only drivers.
For any brand of router to give you that, it will need software that traps USB output and sends it to the router/printer.
Depending on your printer, we may have alternate drivers that can work with "standard" network printing protocols. What printer is it?

  • SMC Router/Print Server & Airport iBook unable to Print

Was able to print when networked to a desktop PC, now "location unknown" when add new IP printer. Tried adding router IP address, DNS address etc Nothing is working. I have to go back to hard wiring w/ USB to print. Connects to internet without a problem. What gives?

    Hi.
I have never done any IP printing myself, but know a few things about networks. To begin with, how are you set up? Are you using a hub, a router switch? It does not sound like you have a print server. What printer are you using? The details do matter.

  • Photosmart D5160 connected to Router (Printer Server Feature), properties ignored

    Hi everyone,
I'm here to describe my problem.
I have the printer Phothosmart D5160 connected via usb cable to usb port of my router (Proprietary Router of Telecom Italy) for using it in among my home network PCs and laptops.
The problem is that, printing in Windows 7, if I set some properties for the printer (for example Low Quality Print or Manual back and front printing), even if the dialog windows correctly reports the options set, when printing the printer ignores everything.
    How can I solve this?

    Hi TiD91
I understand the printer is connected to the router by a USB cable and will print except when changing the printer properties.
The issue you are having would be bidirectional communication.
Go to start, devices and printers, right click the printer, left click printer properties, click on the ports tab.
Make sure Enable bidirectional support is checked.
Connecting a USB cable to a router may or may not work and can be intermediate.
This printer's connectivity is USB and Bluetooth capable by using the wireless printer adapter.
The USB connection was intended for a direct connection to the computer.
Here is a document for setting up Bluetooth.
    Hope this helps.

  • Issue configuring DAD on HTTP Server within 10g App Server

This time with a sensible subject...
I am trying to configure the HTTP Server within 10g Application Server with a DAD pointing to an instance hosted on the same server. However whenever I apply the DAD settings and re-start the server I am told the DAD is down. I have tried many permutations of the connection string all without success. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem and can suggest a resolution. I am carrying out the same steps as I would for a 9i HTTP Server and can only think it is a difference for 10g App Server.

Reviewing the mod_plsql services page, it says 'Module Loaded No'. I have reviewed the httpd.conf and oracle_apache_conf files and both suggest that mod_plsql should be started but this is obviously not the case.

  • [SOLVED] Samsung ML-2010R on print server: downgrade CUPS to 1.4.7

I take it you simply downgraded to the 1.4.7-4 binary package? That package is built against an older version of lib32-gnutls than the one currently present on your system and hence it fails to start.
So you basically have 2 options here:
    1) Try to solve the issues with 1.5.3.
    2) Build the 1.4.7-4 package yourself.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Printing with SMC4007ABR Print Server to PostScript Printer

I've just set up my Mac Mini in a new network configuration, with an old SMC4007ABR router/print server printing to my Ricoh Laser AP2100 printer, using IPP printing and the configuration for a Generic PostScript printer, which had worked for this printer in previous setups. I am using the IP address of the router, 192.168.2.1, and the queue name specified in the documentation "lpt1". When I log into the router to view the status page it says the printer is idle and ready. When I submit a print job, I get the message "Network host '192.168.2.1' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds...".
I have tried deleting the printer queue and recreating it, using the queue name with upper case, using the queue name specified for use with Windoze ("LP"), changing the router configuration from DHCP to manual IP assignments and back again, resetting the print system from the Printer Setup Utility, using the CUPS interface at http://localhost:631/ to modify the printer setup in any sane way I could think of. I have looked at anything I could find in this forum that seemed relevant, but haven't found anything to try which I haven't tried. I have tried the SMC technical support system, but the router is no longer supported by them, but by another firm which charges per incident, and doesn't support Macintosh.
I would appreciate any suggestions from people who know idiosyncracies of this router, or who have fruitful insights into this strange behavior. Clearly my Mini sees the printer queue, but not well enough to be able to transmit data to it. Thanks for any insights you can offer.

Thanks very much for your response. It seems I was ignoring the answer in some of the posts I was looking at, having misjudged that they were applying to a different sort of situation. I can't even remember what set of instructions from years ago established such a strong prejudice that I needed the IPP protocol. In any case, I'm grateful for your help.

  • Print Server Utility

I am trying to configure my WOS54GY2 print server to my new router. When I launch the Print Server Utility, the drop down options don't have the same options available as in the online knowledgebase tutorial. http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&login=1&app=search&vw=1&articleid=4145&donelr=1
For example, on the tuturial, on step 4 (see link above), it shows that when the wireless security tab is selected, the drop down menu should offer these options:
    None
    64 Bit Keys
    128 Bit Keys
    WPA Personal
    WPA2 Personal
But on my Print Server Utility menu, it only offers the first two options. There are other drop down menus that are missing options too. I downloaded and installed the latest firmware version 6032. Currently, I can't configure it to my new router because of the missing drop down menu options. Please help!

Are you sure that the model number of your Print Server is WOS54GY2 or WPS54GU2.
If the model number of your print server is WPS54GU2 then it supports only  64 Bit Keys and 128 Bit Keys security.

  • Print server and WRT120N

Im trying to configure my PSUS4 print server to my new WRT120N but it cannot detect  my print server.  Is this possible?
    Please help.

Yes. It's possible if the print server IP address is the same with the router. By default, the router's LAN IP is 192.168.1.1, same with the print server.
All you have to do is to change the print server's IP address. You need the software that came with the printer server. You have to unplug the print server from the router and connect it to your computer for that matter. You may also have to unplug the computer from the router.
Open your browser. Type 192.168.1.1. You should be able to access your print server setup page. Check the manual for details. Download the user guide here.

  • Can't connect to printer via usb print server

So I've tried to connect to an EPSON stylus printer from my iMac via a print server with no success.
Here's some info to help focus the questions/help:
iMac running Mavericks, Epson SP R200 printer, Belkin Play router, Toshiba Satellite laptop, Level1 USB print server
Win8.1 laptop prints via print server just fineso IP, port, firewall issues on router/print server side are ruled out.
I have the fire wall off on the iMac
I've quadruple checked IP and subnet numbers of iMac to rest of network, and they all jive.
I can pull up the config page of the print server via Safari on the iMacso connectivity is there
I previously had the printer attached directly to the iMac, and successfully printed.
I've tried to add the printer via IP > LPD method AND Advanced > Windows printer via spoolss
I can get as far as adding the printer, but as soon as I attempt to print a test page the printer has a "filter" error, or some "color" error, the job just goes into nothingness, or the job just sits there and the que is paused.
This is very frustrating to put it nicely.

What driver are you using? - Don't know if you remember, but you had to be using Gutenprint, because Epson's driver for USB-only printers, only works via USB.

  • Printing via printer-server fails

I recently bought a Surecom EP-4904AX broadband router to connect a Windows-ME PC and my 15" 1.67GHz Powerbook G4 (MacOS 10.4.8) to the internet simultaneously. The broadband router also has a built-in printer server which connects to a USB printer (in my case this is a Canon S-500).
Now, the Windows PC prints fine via the router/printer-server, but not the Mac. What happens is that I get a progress dialog, but close to 100% it just stops. The printer doesn't respond at all.
Having read that normal printer-drivers don't work in setups like this I downloaded and installed the Gutenprint/CUPS drivers instead (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3).
The printer still doesn't respond when trying to print from the Mac. What am I doing wrong?

Did you say you have this working on a PC?
    Yup. Works fine there.
The router came with an installation CD for Windows (but not for Macs as always).
    Here's how
to get the needed info from the PC -
(Sorry, this is oriented to Windows XP)
I've got Windows ME, but the principle should be more or less the same I guess.
Go to Printers & Faxes and right-cick on the printer
    and select "Properties."
Go to the Ports tab and note the Description
(highlighted in blue on my PC). Standard TCP/IP port
or internet port are most likely.
    Nope. It's different here.
It's assigned to the following port:
    Surecom_1 (CanonS500192.168.1.1)
If I click on that setting I'm shown a list of all sorts of different ports (COM1, COM2, USBPRN1, LPT1, LPT2 etc.) where "Surecom_1 (CanonS500192.168.1.1)" is one of them.
There's also a button for port-settings which I press and get the following:
    Printer server IP: 192.168.1.1
    Printer name: Canon S-500
    Click on Configure Port.
Here you'll find the IP address, and protocol
selection, and port number or queue name. If Raw is
checked and port number 9100 entered, that equals HP
    Jetdirect protocol on OS X.
    Hmmm... this seems familiar.
If I click on the button for printer queue settings there's a part for "queue data-format" and this is set to RAW. The only other option available is EMF.
Gimme a few minutes to try this out (using "HP Jetdirect -socket" which I've never used before).
    YES, it works!!!!!!
But all's not a joy as the print quality isn't much to write home about. I printed out some text, and it's pretty weak (gray as opposed to black).
I assume this is because of the printer-drivers because I've experienced the exact same thing when I tried installing Linux on the PC. Printing was just as bad there, but within Windows, using the supplied Canon S-500 driver it prints razor sharp and black text is actually black.
Or could something else be the problem?
As mentioned earlier I'm using the Gutenberg/CUPS printer driver package and chosen the Canon S-500 driver, so it should be correct.

In the past I could print on this printer with my MacBook Pro running 10.4.10. But now I had to reinstall my system and forgot the settings of the printer configuration that has worked in MacOS X. So now I can not print and found no configuration that works.
Can some of You help me and tell me how to install this printer properly in MacOS X 10.4.10?
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich
    MBP C2D 2.16 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   2 GB RAM

I am struggling with the same problem. I have two HP 4100dtn printers on ethernet. Each has a manually assigned IP address. I can set up the printer(s) just fine in the Print & Fax Preference and Snow Leopard finds the printer just fine when I enter the IP address and chooses the correct HP Driver.
When I try to print, my print job appears in the queue as expected, than an error appears that something about a "bad command". Sorry, I'm home right now and don't have direct access to the printer so I can't give you the precise language of the message, but the gist of the message is that the system tried to connect to the printer to send the print data but the printer does not know how to respond to the command that was sent.
It's as if the firmware in the 4100 just doesn't have something in it's lexicon that Snow Leopard needs. The HP web site is no help. One page I found says the printer is supported (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&obje ctID=c01664444&jumpid=regR1002USEN ) and another page I found says that it is not supported (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&obje ctID=c01879014&jumpid=regR1002USEN). The HP on line chat won't let me log in and hold a chat with HP unless I know the Serial Number of the printer, which I don't have here at home.
    More to follow tomorrow.
    Anyone have any ideas?
