Issues connecting to ASM instance.

Hi,
I set the ORACLE_SID=+ASM1
export ASM_BASE=/u101/app/asm
export ASM_HOME=$ASM_BASE/product/11.1.0
But when i am trying to connect asmcmd utility.
[oracle@dldb1 ~]$ asmcmd
ASMCMD-08103: failed to connect to ASM; ASMCMD running in non-connected mode
Do i am setting wrong parameters? Please advice me.
Thanks

  • Create a new user for oracle 10G ASM instance with sysdba system privilege

    Hi,
    In our Golden Gate Project, we require the SYS user credential to connect to the Oracle 10g  ASM instance to read the database transaction logs.But our client is not providing the SYS user credential to  connnect to ASM instance.
    I'm getting the error message "ORA-01109:  database not open",When I tried to create a new user using the  below the steps in oracle 10g ASM instance
    1. Login using "sqlplus / as sysdba"
    2. Create user <username> identified by <password>;
    But in oracle 11g ASM instance, I'm able to create new  user  by connecting the ASM instance with SYSASM role without issues.
    Is there is any workaround to create a new user with sysdba system privilege in oracle 10g ASM instance?.
    Thanks in advance .

    Hi,
    Recreate the password file for the ASM instance as follows:
    Unix:
    orapwd file=<ORACLE_HOME>/dbs/PWD<SID> password=<sys_password>
    Windows:
    orapwd file=<ORACLE_HOME>/database/PWD<SID>.ora password=<sys_password>
    Now sys password is reset, we are ready to use sys for ASM management. I decided to create another user ASMDBA as I tried above.
    SQL> create user ASMDBA identified by test01;
    User created.
    SQL> grant SYSASM, SYSOPER to ASMDBA;
    Grant succeeded.
    SQL> select * from v$pwfile_users;
    USERNAME SYSDBA SYSOPE SYSASM
    SYS TRUE TRUE TRUE
    ASMDBA FALSE TRUE TRUE
    Please see this link : http://orachat.com/how-to-change-asm-sys-password-creating-sysasm-user-11g/

  • 11g R2 Grid Infrastructure asmca cannot detect 11g R1 ASM instance

    I am playing with 11g ASM with XEN (one node on host (or dom0) and another node on vm (or dom1)) and was trying to do a Clusterware + ASM upgrade from 11.0.6 to 11.2.0. I am trying asmca. But it is unable to detect the 11g R1 ASM instance. When started in GUI mode, it just offer to create ASM. When started in silent mode for upgrade, it shows:

If so, where can I find information on Oracle Restart and how to rename the ASM instance? Besides, the documents said it is recommanded to upgrade with OUI, but I've already installed the software, can I still use OUI?

    Hi Thtsang,
    sorry for not coming back to you earlier and thanks for "the helpful".
    So, are you saying that after you have removed all the environment variables, you still got the error message "ORA-01034: ORACLE not available"? I thought you got an "ASM upgrade failed", because ASM was down at the time of the upgrade, which you then corrected saying: "In fact, ASM instance was started from Grid Infrastructure home.". Overall, I need to say that I am a bit confused to be honest.
    The alert log entry sounds promising, although, one would need to see more context. For: "But when I use crsctl / srvctl to start ASM, it is still running in 11g R1 Oracle Home." So, something went wrong with the update. For: "BTW, if asmca does not work for me, can I upgrade manually?" - ASMCA is the tool that will perform an ASM upgrade. You can call it interactively, but you will have to use it.
    Support note ID 950200.1 - "ASM 11gR2: How To Upgrade An ASM Instance To Release 11gR2 (11.2.0.1.0)?" describes an ASM upgrade to 11.2. Maybe this note can help you and if it is only to analyze what stage your cluster is in right now. It sounds like, this would be first thing that we need to find out.
    Good luck. Thanks,
    Markus

  • Change Node association of ASM instance

    Hi,
    I have a 4-node cluster running RHEL 5 and GI - 11.2.0.2. After a successful installation we discovered that the asm instance association got switched between Node 2 & Node 3.
    e.g., - Node 2 is running ASM3 instance
    Node 3 is running ASM2 instance.
    Is it possible to correct this, or do I need to rebuild the whole cluster again!?
    Thanks,
    AbbY

    Hi AbbY,
    this is the result, that the root.sh on node 3 was faster than the one on node 2 during install.
    If you would like to have the ASM instance in a specific order after installation, you have to run them sequentially (and nor in parallel).
    But one thing you should also be aware of, is that the ASM number in 11.2 is not fix anymore:
    => The ASM instance number is dependant on the node number (olsnodes -n -i -t -s).
    => Each nodes gets a lease for the node number for approx. 1 week. It's like a DHCP lease, which can expire if not started.
    So if you would shut down node 2 and 3 for one week and then restart the nodes in a different order, lease would change (and therefor the ASM instance number).
    Which leads to the further question (because this is really flexible): Why do you want the +ASM instances to have fixed names?
    If your nodes would be "Mars" and "Pluto", would it matter where ASM1 and ASM2 runs on?
    If you say: We need to know for sqlplus to connect to ASM instance. Why not simply connect this way to ASM:
    sqlplus sys/pwd@hostname:port/+ASM
    You will always end up on the ASM instance on the node (no matter what instance number the ASM instance has on that node).
    O.k. I have to admit there are still a few tools who need the instance number (like asmcmd), but I know this necessity will change, since cluster gets more flexible in the future.
    Sebastian

    Yes you are right , I have to make to sure stock budget doesn't get credited.
    If you remember in one of my other threads, i wanted to derive commitment item from Matl grp, it was for this purpose. I will derive commitment through matl group at the time of procurement / GR etc and assign a dummy commitment item to stock a/cs. Where as i will derive a consumption commiment item from consumption GLs.
    Thank you

  • Proble shutting down ASM instance on Windows 2003 server.

    Hi,
    Before booting the windows 2003 server, I am trying to shutdown the ASM instance and it is just siiting there without any response. This is a 10g database and a 2003 server.
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>set oracle_sid=+ASM

    Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production
    With the Partitioning, OLAP and Data Mining options
    SQL> shutdown immediate;
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your response. Yes I did stopped the database. I was having the same problem with the database ( as it was sitting there after I issued the shutdown immediate ). Finally I had to do shutdown abort, start up in restrict mode and do a shutdown again to stop the database gracefully

  • Upgrade ASM instance database 10g to 11g

    Hi,
    In my environment, I have ASM instance database 10.2.0.3 running on solaris 10 (64-bit), I need to upgrade to ASM instance 11.1.0.6 database. please guide me an overview of steps...
    thanks in advance

    Thanks for the response,
    Sorry, In my environment I know database (10.2.0.3) is mounted in ASM diskgroups, now i have a concern
    1) If database is mounted in ASM diskgroups, could it be a database instance or it has to be only ASM instance connected to the database?
    2) As in my upgrade from ASM instance (10.2.0.3) to ASM instance (11.1.0.6), do we need to upgrade asm instance as well as database? i mean to invoke DBUA twice for upgrading ASM instance then for upgrading database as well?
    Sorry for some silly questions...please make me clear...
    Regards

  • Multiple ASM instances on a single node

    Can i have multiple ASM instances on a single node? This is to have each instance supporting different environment dev,stage etc
    Thanks
    Sannidhi

    I had been discussing the same issue with someone from Oracle. I asked for multiple ASMs on a server so that we could have seperate ASMs running for, say, 10g and 11g.
    He explained that we should think of ASM as being the same as Veritas FileSystem. We don't run multiple instances of Veritas on our servers. On single Veritas "instance" (set of drivers) provides all the Veritas Fx mountpoints on the server. Similarly, there should be only 1 ASM instance on a server.
    (substitute UFS or ZFS or CFS for Veritas in the above example and you still have only 1 filesystem manager on a server providing one type of filesystem, although you could have, say , UFS and Veritas co-exist ; just as you could have Veritas, ASM and Raw co-exist on a server).

  • Multiple ASM Instances on single node

    Hi All,
    After going through some threads it seems to me that multiple ASM instances on a node is not supported and recommended by ORACLE but i coudn't find any ORACLE document or support matrix mentioning this. Can any one give me a pointer to this. Please correct me if i am wrong and Multiple ASM instances are fully supported by ORACLE.
    Thanks,

    Multiple ASM instances on a single node are supported but not recommended due to several issues you could encounter during that kind of configuration.
    Possible interraction between those instances for identification of each disk area usage,each disk area permissions , database instance to asm instance mapping and so on, could result in unwanted behaviour, as ASM is in some way just oracle's representation of LVM.
    Intention is that any kind of distinction/separation of oracle related data under the ASM should be done through the disk groups.
    So it seems it would be better to apply this kind of logic rather than doing suspiciously magical and rare configurations that could bring you similiary strange and unexpected problems.

  • How does 1 ASM instance in a 10 node RAC cause all 10 ASM instance to hang

    Linux RHEL4
    11.2.0.1.0 GI
    11.2.0.1.0 RDBMS
    11.1.0.7.0 RDBMS
    10.2.0.4.4 RDBMS
    Yesterday we had one of the ASM instance on our 10-node cluster hang with a latch "ASM file allocation latch". Oracle support has stated we are hitting a bug with is fixed in the latest PSU.
    What I am trying to understand is how a latch on one ASM instance caused all 10 ASM instances to hang?
    Oracle Supports explanation still does not answer how all 10 ASM instance were affected other then the faulty code that the patch fixes. Bellow is info out of the SAR.
    Data Guard Site:
    ================
    ARC1 PID 21508 reports ORA-240 'control file enqueue held for more than 120 seconds' at Thu Oct 28 11:35:54 2010. This message means ARC1 PID 21508 was holding the enqueue past the maximum tine limit of 120 seconds.
    Next ARC0 PID 17398 reports ORA-16146: 'control file enqueue unavailable' at Thu Oct 28 11:36:52 2010. This means ARC0 PID 17398 tried to access the controlfile and it could get the lock.
    ARC1 PID 21508 is then killed at Thu Oct 28 11:49:57 2010.
    Killing enqueue blocker (pid=21508) on resource CF-00000000-00000000 by (pid=23078) by killing session 5.3
    We see that RSM has been restarted by Broker. This matches to the alert.log and messages showing RSM being restarted several time. i.e. RSM0 started with pid=84, OS id=27915
    Since this started happening around 11:14, the problem may have really started then instead of w/ the CF enqueue block.
    The primary appears to be shipping redo to the standby using asynchronous mode. Unless there was a gap, I do no know if ARC1 should have been doing any remote network I/O. Because a log switch to thread 1 sequence 5235 had just happened at 11:33am, I suspect it was a local disk I/O that was started at least. The ORA-240 is reported at 11:35, exactly 120 sec (or 2min) from this log switch. Notice also the entry to show the log thread 1 sequence 5234 was registered to the controlfile didn't happen yet.
    ASM Side:
    ============
    From the systemstate dump on ASM, multiple processes are waiting on 'ASM file allocation latch' and we are kind of stuck on stack:
    ksedsts()+461<-ksdxfstk()+32<-ksdxcb()+1782<-sspuser()+112<-0000003218E0C5B0<-kfuhInsert()+175<-kffilCreate()+601<-kfnsUFG()+3691<-kfnsBackground()+4382<-kfnDispatch()+527<-opiodr()+1149<-ttcpip()+1251<-opitsk()+1633<-opiino()+958<-opiodr()+1149<-opidrv()+570<-sou2o()+103<-opimai_real()+133<-ssthrdmain()+214<-main()+201<-__libc_start_main()+219
    This caused the hang on the ASM side and hence ASM was not responding to the database. The CF Enqueue issue on the database was a side effect of this.
    This is a direct <BUG:9232266> which is a duplicate of <BUG:8974548>

    Thanks Murali,
    I was little reluctent to open a tar since my experince says that its better to troubleshoot the issue yourself instead of spending time with the Oracle support :)
    Well, I got some more information on this : the sql for the process id of ASM instance is :
    Alter Diskgroup mount all;
    It looks like it is unable to mount the diskgroup and get hunged at that point , is it due to the new disk added to the system or do we missed something after adding the new disk.
    Also, the ASM process can not be killed from unix box while the ASM is down.
    Will appreciate your time if we can move in any directions from here ..
    Thanks ,
    Ankur

    There was already an instance named +ASM in the host, which has the diskgroup 'DBDATA' created.
    But now i have created a new instance and i was trying to connect to the same diskgroup.
    I dont have permission of the root, but i have the oracle login.
    could u pleaze help me in this regard...
    i need to connect to the diskgroup, if i try to stop the other instance, i was not getting the error, but the diskgroup is getting dis-mounted.
