Issues Creating DVD of Music

I am trying to create a DVD with favorite Christmas music that I have purchased over the years. I created still pictures (limited to 1 minute each) of the album cover and copied into iMovie repeatedly for length of each album and imported sound files, then matched lengths. Problem is that iDVD interprets this as a movie (which of course it is) and does not seem to be able to compress it enough to get several albums on the DVD. Even at full quality AIFF there should be enough room on a DVD for many albums with artwork. It looks like making each album a slide in a slideshow would not work since music is so long and I would like to be able to have a 'play all' option. I hope this makes sense - any help appreciated!

Perhaps I'm old fashion, but I still prefer using CD's when it comes to audio. But it's not impossible to place audio on a DVD. But you might have better luck with Roxio Toast in this particular situation. Have you considered making a Music DVD with Roxio Toast?
At least that's the app /approach I'd take. And here's the way to do it (directly from Toast's Help Menu):
Making a Music DVD
A Music DVD can be played in a set-top DVD player or in a Macintosh or a Windows computer with a DVD player. A Music DVD should not be confused with a DVD-Audio disc. DVD-Audio discs require a special DVD player. A Music DVD is a standard DVD that contains music (and can also contain photo slideshows and videos), has full navigation menus for song selection, and can be played in any set-top DVD player.
A standard Music DVD can contain over 50 hours of music with Dolby Digital sound. If your recorder supports dual-layer recordable DVDs, you can create a Music DVD with over 100 hours of music.
To make a Music DVD:
1 Click the Audio tab at the top of the Toast window.
2 Click the Formats tab in the left drawer and choose Music DVD.
3 Choose optional disc settings:
• Menu Style: Choose the style for the menu background image, text and buttons.
• Auto-play disc on insert: Select this option to automatically play the first playlist when this disc is inserted into a DVD player. The DVD main menu is not displayed, but is accessible by choosing the MENU button on the DVD player remote control. Some players may not support Auto-Play.
• Play all items continuously: Select this option to automatically play each playlist on the DVD without first returning to the DVD main menu.
• Include Shuffle play: Select this option to include a Shuffle button for each playlist and SmartList in the DVD menu. Clicking the Shuffle button when playing this DVD will play the tracks in a random order.
• Include SmartLists: Select this option to include SmartLists in the DVD menu. SmartLists are automatically generated playlists for all Artists, Albums and Songs on the DVD.
Click More for additional disc settings. See DVD Disc Settings.
4 Choose the audio encoding format:
By default, Toast records Music DVDs in Dolby Digital 192 kbps audio. This compresses the audio to maximize disc space to fit over 50 hours of music, but maintains full Hollywood-style fidelity.
To change the audio format from Dolby Digital to uncompressed PCM audio, click More and choose the Custom option from the Encoding tab. Choose PCM for the Audio Format.
Toast records PCM at 48 kHz / 16 bit levels, which is higher than standard CD quality, and exceeds the levels of most songs in your iTunes library. Audio that has been recorded at 96 kHz / 24 bit is downsampled automatically unless you choose the 96 kHz / 24 bit option, which maintains the higher quality but significantly reduces disc space.
There are also optional Encoding settings which apply to photo and video content. See DVD Encoding Settings.
5 Drag and drop audio files into the Content Area from your hard disk or the Media Browser.
To use the Media Browser, click the Media tab in the left drawer and choose Audio from the pop-up to browse your iTunes library. You can also use the "+" button at the bottom of the Toast window to add files, or drag and drop a mounted audio CD from your Desktop.
You can add any non-protected QuickTime supported audio files, such as AIFF, MP3, WAV, AAC, and even MOV. You can also add audio files that QuickTime doesn't support - such as Dolby Digital AC3, OGG and FLAC.
Each group of files you add into the Content Area appears as a playlist. Each playlist will have a button in the DVD menu that you can choose to play the music. You can duplicate, rearrange, remove or edit playlists. See Working With Playlists.
You can also optionally add photos and videos into the Content Area.
6 Insert a blank recordable DVD.
7 Click the red Record button and choose a recorder from the list and optional recording settings, such as "Number of Copies."
8 Click Record to continue.
Toast displays a progress bar and status information as it records your disc.
Suggestion: Make certain to study the difference/s between Making a Music DVD vs.
Making a DVD-Video.

  • Aspect ratio issue when watching 16'9 idvd created DVDs on regular players

I am having problems with the aspect ratio of any DVDs that I burn in iDVD as 16'9 - The original video is 16'9 and edited as such in FCP, then exported with current settings selected and then in iDVD I select a widescreen project - preview of the project is fine and when the DVD is done it plays with the correct aspect ratio if I watch on the computer's internal DVD player - but my issue is when I watch on any regular DVD player (on a widescreen tv of course) all the video looks tall and skinny, including the menu.  The only way I found to get the video to look like it's natural proportion is to switch the settings to 4'3 on the DVD player, then it creates almost a "super-widescreen" look where there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen.  On the otherhand, when i used to shoot in 4'3 and create DVDs as 4'3 projects, I NEVER had this problem when watching on a regular DVD player on widescreen TV!  It would take up the whole screen and look normal (I know it must stretch it to fit, but it wasn't noticable).  I thought creating a 16'9 video I should be able to watch on a widescreen TV and it should take up the whole screen and look normal.  Please help!

  • After creating a DVD with music, the pictures all come out fuzzy and not sharp.  Why

After creating a DVD with music, the pictures all come out fuzzy and not sharp.  I have tried all the options, and nothing works, they all come out fuzzy.   I have wasted about a dozen DVD's

Have you tried enhancing and sharpening in Premiere Elements before burning to disk?
What steps are you doing exactly?

  • How do I use itune music for creating photo DVDs with music in adobe element 10?

How do I use/transfer itune music for DVDs with music in adobe elements premier?

    On each computer:
Open iTunes. Select Preferences from the iTunes menu and click on the Advanced icon in the toolbar. At the top you will see a box showing the path to your iTunes library. Click on the Change button, navigate to the location for the library on your external drive, select it and click on the Open button. Note this permanently changes the library's location on that computer. That means you cannot access your music unless the external drive is connected.
If you don't want a permanent change, then press the OPTION key and hold it down while you launch iTunes. iTunes will then prompt you to select the library you wish to open for that session.

  • ITunes created a second "Music" folder within root folder

I've had pretty fair luck for years with iTunes, and then today hit several snags. I had some settings go South on me after some resets from iPhone issues.
Today I noticed that when I added a new song file to the library, it was copying the file into the designated Media Folder (I use the "Music" folder) but leaving an original in its original folder. Copying instead of moving the file. Previously when I did this, the files would be moved into the Music folder and be organized into artist sub-folders, and there wouldn't be another copy left behind in the original folder.
So I tried to "Organize Library" and it went through the entire library, created a new "Music" folder into which it put some (not all) songs and files into new subfolders.
Now I have a "Music" folder with lots of empty folders (but not all, so I can't just delete them all without openoing each one first) and another "Music" folder within that folkder with a bunch of new sub-folders.
Additionally, my poriginal issue is still present, it is copying, not moving files when I add them to the library.
    Any thoughts?

I found and answered your post in the other thread regarding the extra layer of folders but it looks like you've moved on already.
Perhaps my script ConsolidateByMoving will do what you're after with regard to moving files in this thread.

    Hi
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provocing it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    176x144
    480x360
    640x480
    720x540    960x540
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies—except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format—that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Create DVD button not working

My "Create DVD" button is not clickable.was working fine for weeks. Had a "QMaster" problem but downloaded Digital Rebellion to fix it. Now, the QMaster issue is no longer BUT the Create DVD button cannot be clicked.Dragged the Compressor icon to the trash and reinstalled, same problem. Have rebooted and tried again, same problem.is killing
    Time deadline of course...ugh!
    Thank you

Sorry, didn't know that would be relevent since it worked for a month.
Compressor 4.1.3 and FCPX 10.1.3 -- Have not had any previous versions...have had them both installed for about a months.
Latest info: received help but problem not solved. I CAN make a DVD from inside FCPX using the export command. Tech suggested QMaster files corrupt and removed the two QMaster files and placed them on my desktop so software would not find them and would recreate them. Rebooted system. Still cannot click "create dvd" inside Compressor.
I work on an iMac with bootcamp installed...I have the machine in Mac mode running...

  • Footage "hops" after creating DVD

I couldn't think of a better word than "hops."  Sorry    When playing the clips before adding to Encore the clips play fine.  Imported into Encore and created a DVD and now the main feature of the DVD has issues.  Any parts of the video where there is movement(actors moving, talking, etc) the video looks fine but anything that is not moving in say a static shot with objects in the foreground,  the objects bounce noticeably bad..  I have placed three different video files on the DVD and only one does this so I am thinking there is some sort of compression or rendering issue with the options I choose.
I believe the one that has the issues I rendered out of Premiere CS5 as the H.264: Youtube HD with defaults.(29.97 fps)
The Outtakes reel I rendered to H.264: Youtube SD with defualts and that seems fine(29.97 fps)
The shortened version of the film I rendered in H.264:Vimeo HD (30 fps and other tweaks vimeo's site suggested as I had issues uploading to their site unless I did this exactly.
I am re-rendering the footage with h.264 DVD720(not the offical name) and added the tweak Vimeo suggests from their site.  I am hoping this works if not then I will go with the Vimeo preset with tweaks.  I guess i am curious why this happens and if there is a suggested format I should be doing when creating DVDs?  I normally do not do DVDs and just upload to YT or Vimeo so this is new ground for me.
    Thanks,
    Rich

    Hi Rich,
You are doing yourself a disservice if you think you have this all sorted out now. Stan made the correct suggestion at the start that you need to encode to MPEG-2 for DVD, but you seem to be on a totally different path of your own choosing.
The official DVD specification calls for MPEG-2. Nothing else. You can feed Encore YouTube clips or whatever you want, but they will ALWAYS, without exception, get converted to MPEG-2 before they ever get burned to the DVD. Nothing else will work.
You are correct that MPEG-2 files are larger than your YouTube clips - because the H.264 clips are more compressed for the web. By converting to H.264 from Premiere, you are highly compressing the video, tossing out a bunch of data that you will never get back later.
The proper workflow from Premiere is to encode directly to MPEG-2 for DVD in Media Encoder. The resulting file is then DVD-ready when you import it in to Encore. It will not be converted again, and the quality is just one generation away from the original source. As stated earlier, if you bring your H.264 clip into Encore, it has to transcode it to MPEG-2 anyway. Now you have encoded the file twice...time wasted, quality lost, extra space taken on the hard drive...what was gained?
Also - if your source was 1080i or SD, it was interlaced. Converting to an "H.264 for web" format deinterlaces the video to Progressive. With SD footage, that means you threw away half the resolution. Half the picture, gone.
If you DO need to create an intermediate file for some reason, there are "lossless" .avi codecs that come to mind like Lagarith or UT, but I never think of YouTube videos and quality together ;-)
Please reconsider your workflow, and your viewers will thank you
    Regards,
    Jeff

  • 4.0.5 Making "Create DVD" but nothing happens...

I'm trying to make a DVD with my movie but Compressor hangs up on the message "Waiting"... and nothing happens...
    Please help...
    That's what I get:

I'm running into this same issue with Compressor 4.07 on a new MacBookPro with Retina and external Super Drive.  How did you solve it?
It makes files for DVDs OK but when I add the Create DVD function, it hangs up close to the end.  I let it run all night to see if it just needed time but nothing had changed over 8 hours later.
Did you do something to make it work for you or did it just need time?

  • Creating DVDs

I am trying to use an external LaCie d2 DVD burner to create DVDs but my success rate is running close to nil. I would welcome and appreciate any suggestions as to how I can begin to troubleshoot this problem.
I am using the latest version of iDVD but it seems as if nothing I am creating is actually making its way onto the disk in the LaCie. I am beginning to lose sleep over this issue.

Ok well first off which version are you using? This is the version 6 group, but your info indicates an eMac running OS 10.3.9, so perhaps you bought iLife6 or you are really running an earlier version?
And when you try to make DVDs what happens? Nothing? Errors? If so what do they say? It seems to work but then the DVD doesn't play? ???? ???? ????

    Hi
    What You've made is a Data-DVD - Not a Video-DVD - Altough it looks like one
no DVD-player will identify it as one.
If You put DVD on Desktop and drop files and folders into it -
    • it will burn out as a Data-DVD
If You burn from within iDVD or select a DiskImage via Disk Util tool and then burn out from within Disk Util tool -
    • You'll get a Video-DVD

  • Creating slideshows w/ music

Quick question: I have been asked by many friends in our little town to create dvd slideshows of their vacations/weddings etc....set to music. I am thinking of starting to sell this service for maybe $15/dvd. If my "clients" and I are in agreement that these creations are for personal use and not to be posted on the web, can I use any music that I have purchased off of iTunes? Thanks in advance! Fourwoods

Q: Do you know of a web site that clearly explains all of the rules concerning this?
A: You mean other than apple's terms of use? (see Submissions in Section 2, item 8)
    http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa#terms
Also you can use Google and search for terms like "music copyright infringements". Here are a few sites I happened to notice on my first search:
    http://www.copynot.com/
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_infringement
    http://www.berkleeshares.com/musicbusiness__careers/copyrightinfringement

    http://www.ibls.com/internetlaw_news_portalview.aspx?s=latestnews&id=2113
    http://www.clickandcopyright.com/copyright_infringement.asp
Q: I have given many of my slideshow dvd's to family members as gifts - all set to music. If they just watch it for personal use, am I still violating something?
A: I am not an attorney but perhaps this falls under "fair use". You'd have to ask an attorney to be sure.

  • Commentary, Audio & Burning Issues with DVD-9

Hi. I have a collection of problems here that sprouted up when building and formatting a dual-layer disc. I have a feature film with two commentaries on top of the normal audio track. If you hit play on the main menu, I specified A1 (which is the normal track) and it goes to two .jpegs (FBI Warning & Interviews/Commentaries Disclaimer) and then plays the movie.
If you go to the Special Features menu, you can hit two play buttons with each commentary specified to them (A2 & A3) the two .jpegs appear and then the movie plays.
This works fine in the simulator but when I build the disc and play the VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folder in Apple's DVD Player, this doesn't work. A1 is what is heard (I have to manually select the commentary audio tracks in DVD Player). I tried bypassing the .jpegs and have the commentary buttons go straight to the movie and this works when I build and play in DVD Player. I wouldn't prefer to do it that way. So if there's a solution it would be appreciated.
My second issue is more related to audio encoding. But I'm not sure if this is a Compressor issue or DVD SP4 issue. I encode the audio from .AIFFs or audio from .MOVs into Dolby .AC3 files. The settings in Compressor is:
    http://www.underlibertymovie.com/Compressor_Settings.png
The audio sounds fine in the simulator, however when I build the disc and open in DVD Player, the audio levels are all over the map. Whenever something is bassy (low frequency) happens, the audio levels are dropped and then gradually raises to normal level. So whenever the bass drum hits in the soundtrack or explosions, this sounds really strange. I'm sorry if this is solely a Compressor issue but I thought I'd give it a shot.
And thirdly, this is a dual layer DVD-9 at 6.6 GBs of data. I've set a valid layer break point as far as I know and have tried to burn several times. First I had Memorex DVD+R DL media and it would write the lead-in, start the first bit of the image, then abort and say "The device reported an error: Unknown device" and then there was an error code that I can't recall (something like 00x 04x)
After finding out that Memorex is not a reputable brand, I had my partner drive quite a ways to find DVD+R DL Verbatim discs (which is what people were consistently recommending) and the same problem occurred. I also noticed afterward that both brands are ReWritable discs. The Memorex discs didn't specify this but my Mac said it was. I can burn another DVD and get the exact error message if that helps.
Sorry for such a long post, but I'm at a loss with these issues. Thanks.

    Hi Logimec,
If your playback requirements are as simple as you say, here is an option
that will work with no scripts.
Have your FBI and commentaries as one short vid track and create 3 stories
name the 1st "... A1", the next story as "...A2" then another for A3.
in the story inspector, general tab, DISABLE all other audio options except
the one which coresponds with the desired audio content, you must do this
even if they have no audio to go with them.
then create 3 stories for your feature track named "...A1,2,3 (same as earlier)
and again, enable ONLY the audio track you wish presented.
select the buttons, one at a time for each option and look to the "Button inspector, advanced tab, streams option"
and select the audio stream you wish presented.
Needless to say you must also RE-target your buttons to the desired story
line and not the main tracks.
you must be sure that the end jump from the warning to the feature goes to
    the coresponding story/audio option, A1 to A1, A2 to A2, etc.
I also recommend you look in the help manual under "Setting the dual layer direction" "OTP & ATP" it may help you improve the delay at your "Break Point"
    Hope this helps,

  • Is there a way to create DVD chapters in iDVD?

Is there a way to create DVD chapters in iDVD? I don't see any options for it in iDVD. Also, I don't want to have to import all the footage back into imovie. Thanks

So, what if iDVD 7.1.2  doesn't recognize the chapters from iMovie 10.0.5?
Apple has removed the ability to create chapters in iMovie 10
I use iMovie 06 to do this. It works perfectly with Mavericks, as does iDVD.  You can purchase iMovie on disk as part of iLife 06, readily available on Amazon and eBay.
It's quite shocking that another feature has been removed from the once mighty iMovie.
