Issues discovering IPhone5 personal hotspot on wifi

I have a MacBook Retina, using OSX 10.9.3, I usually use personal hotspot on my IPhone5, while it works fine when I have the IPhone connected via USB Cable, If I want to connect via WIFI, it doesn't properly discover my IPhone wifi hostspot (I dont see the network in wifi list) even if the phone is very close, I have to switch on/off personal hotspot option several times on my phone, as well as turn off/on wifi on the mac after which I can see & connect to network. Where as it works fine with a Windows 8 laptop, even if the laptop is in another room about 10-12 feet away.

Try this:
Connect your phone to iTunes and check the name of your phone.  If it has an apostrophe in the name such as Greg's iPhone, then you need to edit the name and remove the apostrophe.  You can youtube "How to Change the iTunes iPhone Device Name" for easy instructions.
Hope this helps.

    Hey there arunvdi,
It sounds like you are unable to connect to the Wi-Fi created by your Personal Hotspot. I recommend these troubleshooting steps from the article named:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Personal Hotspot
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2756
Try disabling and reenabling Personal Hotspot from Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    Wi-Fi troubleshooting
If you encounter an issue using Personal Hotspot with other Wi-Fi devices, try the following:
    Turn Personal Hotspot off.
Verify Wi-Fi is on in Settings > Wi-Fi.
    Turn Personal Hotspot back on.
If another device is unable to join your Wi-Fi network, ensure that the user enters the Wi-Fi password correctly. If the device cannot see your Wi-Fi network, verify your device name.
Note: Windows may not properly display a device name that uses non-ASCII characters.
Verify how many devices are currently using your Personal Hotspot. Depending on your wireless carrier and, the maximum number of Wi-Fi connections may be limited to three at one time.
If the other device still cannot connect, try turning Wi-Fi off and on again on the device. Verify that your device can see other Wi-Fi networks.
Note: If you see an "Unable to Join" or timeout error when trying to connect a device using Wi-Fi, ensure that you remain on the Personal Hotspot screen until the first device connects. After a device has connected, you can leave the Personal Hotspot screen and use your phone normally. Your device will automatically stop broadcasting using Wi-Fi if you put your device to sleep or after 90 seconds elapse with no devices connected using Wi-Fi. You can start broadcasting your Wi-Fi network again by tapping Settings > Personal Hotspot.
If none of the previous steps resolves your issue, restore the iPhone.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • HT201311 Can I use personal hotspot as wifi to connect AirPrint printer?

Can I use personal hotspot as wifi to connect AirPrint printer and print?
    Thanks. Appreciate your help.

Yes, that should work at least temporarily.  Some printers are not constantly looking for WiFi networks, however, so you'll have to make sure the hotspot is setup and active every time you turn your printer on.

  • When connecting ipad to iPhones personal hotspot via wifi it is showin up as 2 connections when only 1 device is connected. Is someone hacking my phone?

When connecting ipad to my iPhones personal hotspot via wifi it is showin up as 2 connections when only 1 device is connected. Is someone hacking my phone? I only figured out I had a problem when my partner did the exact same set up and it showed up as only 1 device connected. I have changed the password and turned it off/on and etc. the really weird thing is now when my ipad is turned off and I turn my iphone personal hotspot on it shows up with 1 connection (when I don't have anything connected) for about 5 secs and then goes off and then 1 device connected for about 5 secs and then back off. This just keeps going on and off. What is going on. Could my phone have a bug or be hacked. Please help as it is kinda freaking me out. Thanks.

    Hello asrt17,
This may occur if your iPhone is connected to your computer via USB, as it will automatically share the connection via USB.
    iOS: Troubleshooting Personal Hotspot
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756
When Personal Hotspot is enabled, your iOS device automatically shares your Internet connection with your computer when connected using USB.
Example: When you connect iPhone to your computer to charge or sync with iTunes. To avoid unnecessary data charges, turn off Personal Hotspot when not in use.
    Cheers,
    Allen

  • Has anyone else had issues with Verizon Personal Hotspot disappearing?

My Verizon Personal Hotspot has disappeared for the second time in three weeks.  I talked to Verizon and they claim it is an Apple issue.  Have anyone else had this problem?  If so, how did you fix it?  Thanks!

Credits from promotions do expire, and no notice is given. It's up to the company delivering the promotion to post the expiration date, which all the ones I have seen did, though sometimes they buried it in the "fine print". Check with the promoting company, or post what promotion issued the credits and perhaps someone here can confirm whether or not the credits have expired.

  • In ma iPhone5s personal hotspot is not available

IIn ma I phone 5s personal hospot is not available

One possibility is that your cellular carrier plan may not support it. See the following and note that for some of the carriers you may have to pay an additional fee: Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone - Apple Support

  • IPad can't find ANY wifi networks or personal hotspot each time I return to my home network

I have an iPad 2 as well as iPad 4, iPhone 4 and Macbook Pro. Each of these connect fine to my home network, however my iPad 2 suddenly couldn't find any networks or my iPhone 4 personal hotspot, bluetooth or wifi.
I went to Singapore and hey presto, it could find and connect to wifi networks with ease.
Then I came home to Australia, couldn't find any networks or personal hotspots again. Went to work, same issue, couldn't find the network at work. So took it to the Apple Genius Bar and it worked automatically again without changing any settings. Reset to factory settings just incase this somehow helped getting it home.
Took it home, worked fine. Recovered from a previous backup and still worked fine.
Brought my ipad into work yesterday, couldn't find my personal hotspot or wifi networks. Took it home, can't find any networks. Reset my modem and it still can't find any networks (or my personal hotspot) even though all other devices automatically connect.
Any suggestions? I suspect when I take it to Japan next week it will probably work fine, then I'll come home and it probably won't. Is it some sort of software issue? Why would it stop working every time I take it out of my home network and bring it back?
I have all the latest updates.
Thanks in advance and reading through!

Does the ipad have any management software put on by your workplace ? If so this my be somehow disabling your wifi. The other thing it may be is the wifi channel your wifi is broadcast on but as it happening to you with a lot of access points it prob isn't this it may be a hardware issue, you could take it To an apple store and if it works there try connecting it to your phone. You could also try this, go to general > one of the last options (between VPN and reset) is profiles (This only shows up if u have profiles installed) if you have profiles go into it and delete the profiles then restart. this may help. Good luck

  • TS2756 Cannot connect to Personal Hotspot iOS 7 iPhone 4

Hi. I have updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 7. Before, I have no problem in using Personal Hotspot. But after this upgrade, no one can connect to my Personal Hotspot. In my iPad, it keeps trying to connect to the hotspot for a long long time and cannot connect. In my HTC Android, it keeps on "Obtaining IP Adress". In my PC (USB Tethering), it says that the cable is unplugged.
I have several ways to solve this problem (like turn off - turn on mobile data, turn off - turn on iPhone, reset network setting) but nothing changed.
What can I do in this situation? Thanks in advance.

I am not sure I am right. I have iPhone4, iPad3 and iPhone5 of my friend. Both iPhones have already upgrade to iOS7,last update this morning. And my iPad is still using iOS 5.x. The problem is I cannot using USB connect Personal Hotspot from my devices. I think the correct issue may involve with iTunes not the version of iOS. It seems the problem was occurred after I have done update iTunes.
    * I used iOS 7 beta and it's ok since I update iTunes ,then I have tried restore my iPhone to iOS 7.0.2.
** I connect iTunes from my Macbook.
*** I have try it on different of iOS.
**** I don't have issue with Personal Hotspot on WiFi but on Bluetooth,I've never used it.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks

  • First generation iPad connection to iPhone 4s personal hotspot

    Dear all,
I'm having troubles with the following configuration.
I have an iPhone 4s (iOS 5.1.1, modem firmware 2.0.12) which is sharing its internet connection via personal hotspot. This actually works (tested with a MacBook which is able to see the wifi network generated by the iPhone, and succesfully connects and browses the internet with no problems).
An iPad (first generation, iOS 5.1.1, modem firmware 07.11.01) sees the wifi network generated by the iPhone, but cannot actually connect to it. It responds with the message "Impossible to access to selected network". It's definietly not a password problem. Tried to turn off and on the wifi on both devices, and to turn off and on the personal hotspot on the iPhone. Tried to switch off and on both devices. Nothing worked.
    Someone can help?
    Thanks a lot,
    Lozzi70

  • Couldn't get personal hotspot to work

I tried the personal hotspot tonight for the first time (it is supported on my carrier - AU in Japan) but I couldn't get it to work.
The restaurant I was in had wifi that my iPhone automatically connected to. I think that was one issue. For the personal hotspot to work, doe the iPhone need to be connected to the Internet over LTE or 3G?
My personal computer could not connect to that same restaurant wifi because it was a member's only wifi for AU cell phone users.
If I turned off wifi to force my iPhone to be connected via LTE but then I got a message saying wifi needed to be turned on to use the personal hotspot feature.
So I turned wifi on again, but my iPhone's wifi did not appear in the personal computer's list of networks to connect to.
Anyway... how would one get this to work? I think I wanted my iPhone connected via LTE, wifi on but NOT connecting to that AU wifi. Is that right? I didn't see how to get the iPhone to NOT connect to the wifi if wifi was on.
    Thanks,
    doug

The problem was that the network settings needed to be reset. After that it worked properly which is like this:
When I entered the restaurant (or at home) the iPhone 5 connected to the known wifi network. That's fine.
When I turn on personal hotspot, the wifi mark disappears and you see the carrier name and connectivity in its place. In my case it said "KDDI LTE".
At this time the wifi network name appears just fine in the personal computer's list of hotspots and you can select it, enter the password and connect.
When you turn off the hotspot, if you were connected to wifi then the wifi mark re-appears.
Anyway, I just tried it from home. I did a speedtest  on my iMac tethered by wifi to my iPhone 5's personal hotspot. Not too bad - download 7.23 Mbps and upload 6.70 Mbps.

  • Personal hotspot not recognized by MBA?

My wife has an iPhone5, and unlimited ATT service. We also have an MBA 10.8.3 and iPad1. When trying to use the iPhone5 personal hotspot to connect with the MBA, the phone does not appear on the list of available networks. If then follow steps on iPhone of Settings>General>Cellular>Set up Personal Hotstop and turn it off and then back on, it will usually appear on MBA list of networks and works fine. It just never appears on its own. However, it appears and works for the old iPad. Is problem in MBA?
    thanks for any help.

    Update on the above:
I did some more research on this using assorted of my 2nd gen nanos and a couple 1st gen ones as well.
It's only the 2GB 2nd gen nanos  MA477LL part number, that do not work with Lion / 10.7.4 / iTunes 10.6.3.
2nd gen MA477LL  does not work, it's a 2GB model. I have two of these.  Neither works.
    2nd gen MA428LL  works  it is a 4GB model
    2nd gen MA426LL  works  it is a 4GB model
    1st gen MA352LL  works - it's a 1st gen nano refurb (1GB)
1st gen MA350LL  (1GB) - this is another 1st gen nano refurb, but one that's formatted for Windows (and had nothing on it when I connected it).  For some reason it mounted fine in Mac iTunes environment and even let me drag an AAC track onto it.  I was dumbfounded.   On the desktop, its sys info showed info like any FAT32 flashdrive but it did have an iPod nano icon on it.   I ejected it from iTunes and plugged in a pair of earbuds and hit play on the track. It plays fine.   Go figure!  I rechecked the settings in the device.  It does say Windows for the format. I feel like I'm in the Bermuda triangle.  I might have to reformat it next time a Windows iTunes setup sees that nano though.
So bottom line here with the second gen nanos:    it's the 2GB model, the 2nd gen nanos with model MA477LL that do not work in Lion and iTunes 10.6.3 for whatever reason.   Both of my devices with that model number do work fine on an older MBA running Snow Leopard and iTunes 10.4.

  • Iphone 5 personal hotspot slow connection to MBP

Hi guys, my personal hotspot connection has been running extremely slowl on my MBP circa 2q2010 model. It tethers fine and all and is recognised as connected but the download speeds are super low, I try loading webpages on BOTH the iphone 5 and the MBP and they both load slowly while connected to each other.
Here's the puzzling thing, when I disconnect the two, the iphone loads pages quickly and suffers no speed issues.
Then I tried connecting it to an ipad via Wifi and the iPad has excellent speed and so does the iPhone. I'm very puzzled by all this since it used to run fine before but it's been a few weeks since i connected via iPhone.
Normally when I connect I connect via USB, and turn off the MBP wifi connection, this time around, nothing works. Would appreciate some advise.
One more thing, I updated system software yesterday, I know it's tempting to blame it on the system upgrade, and it probably is the reason but i just wanted to check here first. The software update may also be unrelated.
