Issues in podcasts app

In general I like having podcasts in a separate app from music. Being able to manage subscriptions through the app is great. I also like
the visual style of the app quite a bit. However, like others here, I'm having some troubles with the app. They are:
1) Downloads stall on "Preparing to download...". Killing the app and restarting it doesn't help. Sometimes the download will start on its own,
other times I need to restart the phone before the download will work.
2) Sometimes podcast episodes that I've previously marked as played start showing up as unplayed. I'm assuming this happens when the list of episodes is refreshed. Its ver annoying to be told that you suddenly have 200 unplayed episodes. I'd love to mark them all played, but sometimes I have a handful which are legitimately not played. Losing the markers of which I've heard and which I haven't is very annoying.
3) You NEED to have a control to disable streaming over cellular. Especially since the app will automatically start playing the next episode, and streaming it if its not already on the phone. This will acrue massive data usage if you're not careful with it. I would actually prefer it if autoplay of the next episode was either disabled by default (like in iTunes on Mac) or at least optional. Sometimes I just want to get to the end of an episode and stop, and not play the first 10 seconds of the next episode then have to do some fancy dance to stop it, and return it to the starting position for next time.
4) The icons to pause / resume the download of episodes are strange. There's a square stop button to pause then a double-bar pause button to resume.
Why not standard play/pause buttons?
I realize this app is very new, and that there are bound to be growing pains. I appreciate the work you've put into it so far and I'm anxiously awaiting fixes for these. Thanks!

HHi,
can can I suggest you look at this thread and okay attention to the extra ID tags to put in place, especially podcastid

  • I'm having issues with audio apps randomly stopping and starting. Also, Siri just randomly opens. For example, podcasts will stop playing in the middle of a playback. Do you have any thoughts?

So I noticed the problem with the app iHeart Radio. While listening to the app, it would stop playing without any noticeable issues. For example, I'm on a WiFi network, operating it where I normally had no issues. I deleted the app because if became so annoying. I now notice the same issues with podcast app when playing back a downloaded program. Also, more than a few times of the day Siri will just randomly open. I am wondering what options do I have to discover the problem. COuld it be the most recent IOS update? I don't want to have to restore an old backup and loose data.

  • Issue with podcast v2.0 app seeing synced podcasts

    Hi Everyone,
I would be extremely grateful if someone could explain an issue I am facing with using the new Podcast v2.0 app on my recently upgraded iphone 4S IOS 7.0.4
I am using iTunes 11.1.3.8 on a windows 7 x64 machine.  I have lectures, speeches etc (which I like to listen at 2x speed) that are in mp3 format from different websites etc that I download to my PC.   I add them to iTunes and change the "Media Kind" from Music to Podcast within iTunes, I have no problems applying this process, the categories & titles appear in the podcast menu and are synced perfectly fine onto my iphone 4S IOS 5.0.1.  I was naturally using the standard music app to listen to the podcasts and I was happy.
I have now updated my iphone 4S to 7.0.4 and have added the podcast app to listen to the podcasts.  I do exactly the same process as I have detailed above, I have no issues, I can even see the numerous titles in their seperate podcasts listed under the podcast menu under my iphone in iTunes - so they have been physically synced over to the iphone.  The problem is in the new podcast app, I only have one podcast with one title listed, (the newest one) all the other podcasts & titles are not shown anywhere.  If I listen to the only title available to the end and then resync my iphone, I realise that the actual title played was the oldest one in iTunes. (not the newest as listed in the app) When I listen to the same & only listed podcast in the app (always the newest one) it is actually the second oldest title that is playing (according to iTunes)
So obviously I assume the podcast v2.0 app is a lot stricter with or it needs additional requirements to be applied to an mp3 file in order that they are show up correctly in the app apart from simply changing the media kind in iTunes (which worked perfectly fine before in IOS 6 & below)
My questions (sorry to take so long to get to them) are, does anyone know what those requirements are? can I apply them to the mp3 files within iTunes or do I need to use 3rd party software to modify/add them so the podcast app will see these manual podcasts?
I hope someone can you help me out with this one as I really enjoy listening to podcasts and feel that my user experience would be greatly hampered if the limit to the availability of podcasts is only to those who have published on itunes or offer subscriptions.  The ability to add podcasts manually and have them synced via iTunes is always available so surely it is only a matter of properly formatting, labelling and adding the correct tags to the files so they show up in the podcast app.
Thanks in advance for your help

(P.S Somone mentioned in aonther post changing the genre to "Podcast" as well, will check that out and get back to you all)

To confirm, changing the genre to "podcast" has no effect on displaying the entire list of titles or other podcasts in the podcast app.  I beleive the app to have a serious bug.
I can see all the titles in spotlight search, I can search by title name or even artist name and they appear, so clearly they are available in the iphone.  Another major issue is I can't play them in the podcast app.  I can select one from spolight and the podcast app loads however it always play the same title that is playing, it won't chnage to the title I selected.
Another oddity (bug) is I can delete the one and only title that is listed in the podcast app and it will delete it - the title name does not change however the podcast itself changes to the next one on the list.  I can keep deleting them one by one.  the title remains the same but the contents of the podcast is the next one after next one as it goes down the list.  So the app is not able to pick up & display the numerous titles even though it can play them.
I can change the media kind to either Audiobook or iTunesU and the mp3 files are successfully listed in both the music app or ITunesU app respectively and I have no issues seeing them all, playing them or syncing them.  only issue with itunesU is can't increase to 2x speed, it says only at 1x
There really are some major flaws with the the podcast app v2.0. I will add a new ticket to the apple bugreport site for developers concerning these issues.

  • Podcasts app issues

Podcasts are failing to load from iTunes into the Podcasts app and loaded podcasts are failing to play. Is there a remedy?
I'm not generally in a wifi area so I must sync podcasts through my computer and aside from the failure of new episodes to appear, even the episodes that are on my iPhone, with iOS7, are failing to play.
I've done a hard restart, I've deleted and reinstalled the app, none of this has worked.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Podcast app issues

I am having trouble getting podcast to download my podcasts.  When I open Podcasts I get a message under description "We are sorry, but we are unable to authorize your account.  Please contact customer service."
My podcast that I am downloading requires a subscription and needs a username and password when downloading on iTunes.  Not sure how to enter my username and PW.
    Any suggestions??

I downloaded was forced to download the podcasts app and did not like it so I got rid of it.  What I am still unhappy about is that there is no way to download podcasts directly to the iphone without syncing with my computer unless you have the Podcasts app.  So I have basically been forced to download the Podcasts app again.  With the podcasts app you have to subscribe, but sometimes I just want to be able to chose which epiosdes I want without subscribing.  Also, I want to be able pick and choose which old episodes I want.  Does anyone know a way around this?

  • Podcast App 2.1.2 on Touch 5G - Lag and battery issues

Since updating to the newest version of Apple's own Podcast app, my iPod touch 5g suffers from extreme lag inside the Podcast app only (around almost 1 second for every touch event to be executed) and the battery life has decreased dramatically. Also, listening to 4 hours of audio Podcasts used up around 80% of the battery. My iPod touch is running iOS 7.1.1 and has plenty of storage space left. I have just around a dozen audio Podcast subscriptions and no video subscriptions at all.
    Anyone with a similar experience?

Could you be streaming the podcasts vice playing them after downloading the file to the iPod?

  • Podcast App 1.1.1 (185) and iTunes Sync

    Hi,
I wonder if someone can point me to the correct why to use this application with iTunes, the issues I seem to be having is i have deleted the appliction off the iphone and to try and get the list of podcasts back to the same as the PC. Do i now stop the iphone from Auto Downloadind and just let the PC handle the subscriptions, the reason i say this is that before removing the app the number of dublicates that i was getting within the app was eating all my memory on the phone.
It would really help if Apple would publish a how to use guide undrr differnet use cases, i'm sure if you want the app on the phone to handel all the downloads and subscriptions then it may work but once youy add itunes into the mix it all seems to go wrong.
It may be that i need to tune off sync from within iTunes on the PC but again there does not seem to be anyt steer from Apple one way or another.
    Spence..

One you delete the Podcasts app from your iPhone, restart your phone.  You now should be able to play podcasts using the music app again.  You will be back to the way you were under iOS 5.x, where iTunes on your computer downloads the podcasts, and you decide (using iTunes) which ones to copy to your phone.

  • Link to report an issue with Podcast update

Someone posted a link so we could report an issue with the Podcast app the last time there were issues with an upgrade.
I sync with my laptop iTunes. Since this latest update to the app, when I delete a podcast in iTunes on my laptop it will not delete on my i devices during a sync with my laptop. It just grays them out and leaves them on my device. It looks like I can manually delete them, but when you click the edit function to delete them, they are no longer grayed out, so you can't tell which to delete and which to keep.
I don't do anything with the cloud, because I have limited wifi service and do most of my updating at a free wifi hotspot.
If someone has that online link on where to report issues, I would appreciate you posting it again and this time I will save it.

    I have a MSI 975X Platinum rev 2 mb with a e6300 processor overclocked to 2.24ghz.
If your CPU operates @2.24 GHz, it means that you increased FSB frequency to about 348 MHz.
To make sure there is no misunderstanding here, let me point out the following:
Memory frequency is ALWAYS linked to FSB frequency by the FSB/DRAM Ratio you can select in BIOS.  If you select 1:1 for example, the BIOS will show that memory frequency is 533 MHz. This value however, only applies to the default FSB clock speed of 266 MHz:
    266 MHz x 1 = 266 MHz (or 533 MHz effective DDR2-frequency).
If your system is overclocked, what counts is only FSB/DRAM ratio, not the memory speed displayed in BIOS.  That means, if you set FSB/DRAM ration to 1:1 and FSB frequency to 348 MHz, your RAM will operate @:
    348 MHz x 1 = 348 MHz (or 696 MHz effective DDR2-frequency).
    The main question is:
What are you talking about when you say, you can't make your RAM operate @800 MHz?
The BIOS does not offer a proper divider to get your RAM to 800 MHz @348 FSB clock speed to begin with.
You have the following choices if your overclock your system:
    FSB=300 + FSB/DRAM ratio = 1.33
    300 MHz x 1.33 ~ 400 MHz (or 800 MHz effective DDR2-frequency)
    FSB=320 MHz + FSB/DRAM ratio = 1:1.25
    320 MHz x 1.25 = 400 MHz (or 800 MHz effective DDR2-frequency)
    FSB=400 MHz + FSB/DRAM ratio = 1:1
    400 MHz x 1 = 400 MHz (or 800 MHz effective DDR2-frequency)
Use CPU-Z to monitor the DRAM frequency that is actually set if you are overclocking.

  • How can How can I download the Podcasts app to my ipod touch

I have a iPod Touch with iOS 6.1.3.  The podcast app was not working so I deleted it.  I tried to download/reinstall from iTunes on my PC but it gives an error saying it "requires a newer version of iPod software" (odd since the app was on the device before with the same iOS version).  I also tried going to the iTunes on the device but can't find the app there to down it and the iTunes app keeps crashing.
Is there a version of the Podcast app that works on an iPod Touch?  If so, how can I get it downloaded?

I am having the same issue and it is very aggravating. The only thing I use my Itouch for is podcast and now it is useless, so frustrated at the moment.

Disabling podcast cellular data from Podcasts settings does not work.

    1. I do not know if this will help you or not. In researching this issue with my wife's iPhone 5c 8GB, the most common answer you will get is to adjust this or that setting, and disable this or that App. These at best are only a band-aide solution at all. The best reply I got was from a Verizon Rep that stated "By design, iPhones do turn off WiFi when they go dormant. So if a download is in progress, or information is being back-up wirelessly and the phone goes dormant, it will switch to use cellular data if it is left on". Afterwards, I discovered the exact same information here on the Apple Support Forum to support this statement.
    2. Later onward, I read that if you keep your iPhone connected to a power source, it will prevent it from going dormant. In which case, this will prevent the iPhone from turning off the WiFi, and keep it connected to the WiFi. So far, this has help the most in controlling the amount of data usage being used, by my wife's iPhone.
    3. Now about looking at the detailed usage summary online, you can not go by it to see the exalt date/time stamp of the data usage. Because, by design the cell towers will collect and store certain data usage for up to a six-hours period. After the six-hour period, then the cell towers will release the stored data usage to the company's servers. And at that time, the collected data usage will be recorded on your detailed usage summary online. For a long time, I brainwork that I had caught Verizon with their hand in the cookie jar for say. Because I knew that we were not using data usage at these odd-ball hours of the night or day. Yet, now I have learn that this is just not the case.

  • Very unhappy with new podcast app...how can I get podcasts back into normal music app or possibly go back to iOS5?

Just "upgraded" to iOS 6.0.1. Thanks to the new "Podcast App" I can no longer keep my podcasts combined with my music. I don't want access to search new podcasts, but seems like I'm forced to have access to this section of the iTunes store as it comes with the podcast app, even when the iTunes store is turned off in the Restrictions section under General Settings. I can probably tell iTunes that my podcasts are really "music" by using the "get info" option in iTunes, but then it won't let me listen to it at double-speed, which is the only way I listen to podcasts. I'm very frustrated. Is there anyway around this or a way to "downgrade"?
If any Apple folks are listening please give us the option of how to listen to our podcasts. It's pointless to have to download one more app when it worked great the way it was. What is the point of separating them??????

"in which case it will" force install the app ... So Yes iTunes will force install the app as I said. My gripe is with Apple yet again forcing a change onto their customers. I use iTunes for sync, so no matter how many times I delete the crappy app it will be forced back on me at the next sync. Most apps have a "remove" option in iTunes but not podcasts. Again, there is no way to stop that I can see. If you know a way to stop this iTunes behavior please document it here. Thanks at least for these forums for aggrieved Apple customers having a chance to find solutions to these issues.

  • Does anyone know of a Podcasts app substitute?

Does anyone know of an approriate app that I can use in place of Apple's Podcast app that WILL NOT require access Wifi or Celllar Data?
When podcasts used to be part of the Music app, I LOVED listening to podcasts.  I actually became information junky as the sacrifice of all the music on my apple devices.  If I’m at home or away, I loved that I could seamlessly sync my podcats between my laptop and my apple devices.  If a podcast was deleted from one, it was removed from the rest post sync.  Also, I never used to sync all podcasts, only the ones that I had yet to listen.  If one of my podcast subscriptions had nothing to listen to, then that podcast’s album cover did not appear in my podcast list.  Why would they appear if there is nothing to listen to?  I could plop my iPhone into my car’s doc station and continue to comfortably listen to podcasts for drives of any length without EVER running into any issues.
NOW, even if there is nothing to listen to, I still see the podcast’s album cover, which I HATE.  This fact makes it difficult to listen to podcasts while driving, especially in the evening.  I have to stare closely at my phone to see which album cover is accompanied by a number that implies that there are podcasts that have yet to be listened to.
Also, I despise seeing the message, “Cellular Data is Turned Off for ‘Podcasts’ ”.  Why do need to be constantly reminded of what I already know?  I turned it off on purpose!  Imagine how annoying this becomes when I am in the middle of driving on the freeway and this message pop’s up, which effectively stops what I am currently listening to until I click a button to get rid of the message.  Safety first?  Hmmm...I guess not!
Podcasts in the cloud?  If I already have the podcasts downloaded in iTunes, all that I want for this Podcast app is to respect my previously downloaded apps an only display what I wanted sync’d from iTunes.  I don’t like seeing podcasts “in the cloud”. This usually means that I am either playing something that I already deleted, unchecked or set as “played” with iTunes or I am streaming something that is already downloaded to iTunes.  I DO NOT want to waste my Wifi service streaming something that is already downloaded onto (or deleted from) iTunes.
NEXT...Podcast Settings:  Why am I able to go to settings to change some settings, such as “Sync Subscriptions”, “Refresh Podcasts”, “Auto-Downloads”, “Episodes to Keep”, and “Use Cellular Data”, but I don’t have the ability to change “Sort Order”, and “Play Order”?  Most of my podcasts require that I listen to the oldest podcasts first, such as news articles or serial podcasts.  This, having go to each podcast individually to make those changes...what a WASTE of time!  Even worse is when  there is an update to the app and I have to go into the each podcast again to change things to how I want them to be...yet again!
Sorry, this is long, but I am VERY passtionate about this. I LOVE listening to podcasts, but despise this Apple's Podcast app!  ARGH!  The only reason why I started using the Podcasts app is because IOS 7 removed this functionality from the Music app of my iPad Mini & iPhone. If the battery of my iPod Touch 4 wasn’t crap I would start using that again because it still has iOS 6.1.3, meaning the Music app still plays my beloved Podcasts. Sign...

    I'm sorry to hear that.
I'm not affiliated w/ the developer, just a happy user that gave up fighting the apple podcast app a while ago.  I used to have a bunch of smart playlists in itunes for my podcasts, and come home every day and pathologically synced my phone as soon as I walked in the door, and again before I walked out the door in the morning.
Since my wife was doing this too, we were fighting over who's turn it was to sync their phone.
Since I've switched to Downcast, I no longer worry about syncing my phone to itunes at all.  I can go weeks between syncs.
Setup a "playlist" in downcast (ex., "Commute") and add podcasts to that playlist.  Add another playlist ("walk" or "workout") and add different podcasts to that one.
Set podcast priorities on a per-feed basis (ex., high priority for some daily news feeds, medium priority for some favorite podcasts, lower priority for other stuff).  Downcast will play the things in the priority you specify, and within that priority, it will play in date order (oldest to newest).
Allegedly, it will also sync your play status to other devices, although that is not a feature I currently use and can't vouch for.  It uses apple's iCloud APIs, so to some extent may be limited by what Apple's APIs can do.

  • Podcast app v. 2.0.1 update released today, but still not working

Several months ago, I purchased two new iOS devices and have not been able to use Podcasts on either device. I spoke with a level 2 Apple tech support specialist over the course of several days trying to resolve the issues and he eventually concluded that the bugs were in the programming and said he would pass the information along to the engineers.
After many months of being unable to use Podcasts, I was excited to see a new update for the Podcast app.  Unfortunately, it appears the major issues plaguing the app have not been addressed.
Is anyone else able to get this app to work reliably?  I try copying/syncing podcasts, and you can watch them copy over and see them displayed in iTunes, but they do not display in the Podcast app on the device.
Can anyone else confirm this behavior? Is there any procedure that will get the app working correctly? I have tried removing all podcasts, as well as removing, redownloading, reinstalling the Podcast app, but so far no good. Is there a third party app that will allow me to play podcasts under iOS 7.0.4?

I have managed to get the Podcast app to work somewhat reliably as follows. Note I haven't tried 2.0.1 yet so I don't know if they broke it further (if that's even possible) -- or perhaps they will buck the current Apple trend and actually fix something.
    1. Forget synching with iTunes -- it's completely broken. I subscribe to the podcasts on iTunes but don't download on iTunes. Subscribing on iTunes is useful because it doesn't seem to "lose" episodes the way the Podcast app does, so when the Podcast app loses episodes (discussed below) I can still see them on iTunes so I can retrieve them again.
    2. I subscribe to all my podcasts in the Podcast app. I set them to download automatically and keep all unplayed. I leave the sort and play options at the default of Sort Newest On Top and Play Oldest First.
    3. I don't use My Stations except for On-The-Go when I want to listen to episodes from different podcasts -- just add each episode to OTG in the order you want to listen to them.
    4. If I have multiple episodes of a single podcast I want to listen to, I just open it in My Podcasts and start the oldest one playing and they will play in the proper order.
    5. You can stream a podcast on iTunes -- that seems to work, and it may even remember the playback position. When I'm at home I Air Play to my Apple TV from my iPhone.
    6. The Podcast app will sometimes discard unplayed downloaded podcasts. Resetting the iPhone usually triggers this but sometimes a simple power off+on will do it as well.  To get them back, you need to open each podcast in My Podcasts and tap the Add Old Episodes. Lo and behold there are the "disappeared" podcasts still marked as unplayed. Just add each one back and it download again.
