Issues modifying files brought from FAT32 & NTFS drives.

I recently moved from PC, I had an external HD that was formated into NTFS.  In order to get my data moved around I've taken alot of files off the NTFS drive onto my Vista PC, then reformated that drive as FAT32, back onto the drive, then from the FAT32 drive to my Mac.  Now if I try to rename the folders, or the contents of those folders, I get the dreaded "BLOOP".  If I try to move them, they insist on copying rather than cutting.
I've checked the permissions on the folders & files; I have read & write access.
I am in an admin user.
I've run repair disk permissions & repair disk just for good measure.
I really think its got to have something to do with them coming from the NTFS and/or FAT32 drives.  Only files coming from those drives seem to be effected.   Anyone got any ideas?

No trouble in those files or in deleting them.
Watch out for file names. Things that are valid for HFS+ are not on NTFS, and caused mayham to Vista.
What I did was just search for and delete all those files you are asking about, and more, like any of the .DS also.
The files are created to store folder and file information.
What would be better would be to use a program when copying, to skip copying hidden and invisible files. And putting "." in front of a file just makes it hidden in OS X.
You can just search and delete. I had to delete tens of thousands. And I now keep all my files on NTFS that I can. I also bought NTFS driver a year ago, having tried MacFUSE also, Paragon-Software cost $29 at the time and performed better. Haven't tried the new MacFUSE 2.x that just came out.

  • NTFS issue: video files copied from Arch won´t load on other devices

    Hi!
I'm having this odd issue... I'll start from zero:
I have a 1TB external HDD (usb3, iomega). It has an NTFS filesystem since it was always my Windows backup drive. Since I've buyed a Digital TV that supports video playback from external drives and almost any video format, I'm using it as a movie/etc device. Previusly I had installed Ubuntu... but since I've installed Arch, any video file that I copy to the external HDD won't work on the TV. When I try to reproduce those files copied from Arch on the TV it hags and reboot several times.
I don't know where to start. I've installed ntfs-3g-fuse package for mounting r/w without root privileges... and my user is part of "disk" and "storage" group.
    Any ideas?
PD: Sorry, I'm not an english speaker... If it's not legible I'll try to write it again.

Usually crash on access indicates damaged filesystem. For example drive was removed without umount-ing it.
For start you can run file system check on your drive from Windows - "chkdsk /f X:"
You also can run it as "chkdsk /f /r X:" to check for bad-blocks (though it is not so critical now days).
Keep in mind - NTFS is proprietary system so 'ntfsfix' from ntfsprogs in Linux could help sometime but do not hold you breath with it.
Better find Windows for Windows filesystem.
Or you can just recreate files system from scratch with mkntfs - all data on the drive will be lost, obviously. But you do not need windows for that.
    Regards,
    Eugene.

  • Cannot emtpy trash containing a file from FAT32 USB drive

    Hi
I had copied a .app file from another mac over a network to my FAT32 USB drive. I then deleted the file from the USB drive per normal it went to trash. The problem is that i cannot empty this one file out of trash.
    What iv tried thus far:
    - I tried restarting.
    - I tried dragging it back onto the USB and deleting again.
    - I tried dragging it onto my desktop, upon which it asked for my system password, and then deleting again.
    - I tried putting it back on the USB drive, restarting in windows XP, and tried deleting in windows.
None of the above has worked. The file is Zero KB. Windows gave an error with something about the file is not completed...?
    Thanks in advance

  • "._" files littering my external NTFS drive

I purchased a USB external drive and formatted it on my Windows PC. I wanted NTFS rather than FAT32.
I use MacFuse on my Mac in order to write to it.
I copied around 14000 files to this drive from my Mac. No issues copying.
Now, I am on vacation with my external drive and my Windows laptop. On the drive, every single file has been duplicated with a second file that starts a "._" in the filename.
I read online that this is some odd resource fork part of the file that the Mac creates when you copy stuff to a Windows formatted drive.
I want to delete all of these ridiculous files from my external drive. I found a Mac program called BlueHarvest, but for the next two weeks, I only have my Windows XP laptop.
How can I get rid of these stupid 4k files? Is there a Windows version of a program that can do this?
Apple, in the future, how can I turn off the creation of all these worthless files, especially .DS_Store, .Trashes, .Spotlight, etc.
    THanks for any advice,
    Chris

  • Recovering data from an NTFS drive with bad blocks

I've got an 80gb NTFS drive that causes an unmountable boot volume BSOD in a PC. Mounted in a 2.5" USB enclosure, Windows 7 sees it only as an empty "RAW" partition and can't actually mount it. Using the Paragon NTFS driver, I can mount it just fine in Snow Leopard on my MBP.
However, when I attempt to copy files from it, it pretty quickly finds one with a bad block and gives up. I'm looking for the best way to get as much data (really just images) from this as possible without going through and restarting the transfer after each of the many corrupt files.
I've tried both Minicopier (which still prompted on every error) and Ultracopier (which would freeze every ten or so corrupt files) as far as simple copiers go, and I've tried DiskDrill and now FileSalvage for full-on data recovery applications. I'd rather use something like the former, but am open to free alternatives to the latter as well.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I've had problems with NTFS formatted external drives containing unremovable "corrupted files".
My problem was resolved using windows. Since Mac isn't supposed to handle NTFS I could not find a suitable way to resolve corrupted file issues, though in windows there is a tool to handle this:
    chkdsk X: -F
where X: is the volume. This resolved my corrupted file issues and the drive worked like a charm with my mac again.

  • How do I restore time machine alias files cloned from broken hard drive

My external hard drive broke (a tiny transistor broke off after the drive fell two feet to the floor) so I purchased a new one and had the Geek Squad clone what was on my old hard drive onto my new one. I was using Time Machine to backup my files. My external hard drive had a much larger capacity than my macbook pro, so I deleted a number of the files saved on my Macbook Pro, knowing that I could access my files whenever I plugged my ext. hard drive in.
After plugging my new external hard drive into my computer, however, I am finding only alias files and I do not know how to restore my data so I can access all of the files again.
Does anyone know how to restore my time machine data from the cloned data I had transferred from my broken external hard drive to my new external hard drive?
    Thanks!

An update - I finally took both of my HDs in to an Apple store and they confirmed my fear: only alias files had been transferred from my old drive, meaning Geek Squad charged me $100 for 850 MB of unusable files.
That has been clear since early in this thread.
Geek Squad has agreed to retry the process
Why pay them to do what you don't need done??? Get a refund and buy an enclosure, which you should have anyway for backups.
but I'm now wishing that I had received more sound advice when I brought the drives into them in the first place.
Don't know who gave you that advice, but I sure wouldn't trust them with my data!
The Apple rep. informed me that my HD works perfectly fine and that it just needs a new enclosure (which I can buy for $20 online, as opposed to paying $100 for a data transfer).
Ummm, the action to take seems very clear to me . . . .

  • Files on external FAT32 hard drive have disappeared

My friend attached her external USB hard drive to my Mac. She didn't know that she was supposed to eject her drive before pulling the USB cord.
Now, she can't see any of her files when she attaches her drive to her Windows XP machine. She's very upset; this drive has years worth of files, including some wonderful photos from a workshop we both went to.
I was able to attach the drive to a Linux computer, and I can see file and directory names. I wasn't able to change into any of the directories, though.
When we attach it to a Windows machine, the drive looks completely blank, and Windows asks if we want to format it.
    What should we do?

if the drive is still visible on your computer, copy everything to your HD and burn a CD or DVD with the data. Then you can reformat the flashdrive and copy the data back onto it.
Obviously you have learned the lesson of never disconnecting a drive without first ejecting it.
I have two flashdrives that I use on my MBPs and my PCs and it has never lost any data, but even a flashdrive should regularly be backed up onto something more permanent.
Your friend obviously has been yanking the flashdrive out of her PC without ejecting it and that's a no-no also. There's an icon in the Windows taskbar on the lower right that is used to eject any portable hardware, from flashdrives to cameras, to whatever. Let her know that it is very important to properly eject the drive, no matter what computer it is on.

  • Windows 7 64-bit Corrupting (Altering) Large Files Copied to External NTFS Drives

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproperf/thread/13a7426e-1a5d-41b0-9e16-19437697f62b/
continue to this thread, I have the same problems, the corrupted files only archives, zip or 7z ... and exe, there are no problems copying larg files like movies for example, no problem when copying via linux in the same laptop, it is a windows issue, I
have all updates installed, nothing missing

    Ok, lets be brief.
This problem is annoying me for years. It is totally reproducible although random. It happens when copying to external drives (mainly USB) when they are configured for "safe removal". I have had issues copying to NTFS and FAT32 partitions. I have had issues
using 4 different computers, from 7 years old to brand new ones, using AMD or intel chipsets and totally different USB controllers, and using many different USB sticks, hard disks, etc. The only common thing in those computers is Windows 7 x64 and the external
drives optimization for "safe removal". Installing Teracopy reduces the chances of data corrpution, but does not eliminate them completely. The only real workaround (tested for 2 years) is activating the write cache in the device manager properties of the
drive. In that way, windows uses the same transfer mechanisms as for the internal drives, and everything is OK.
MICROSOFT guys, there is a BIG BUG in windows 7 x64 external drives data transfer mechanism. There is a bug in the cache handling mechanism of the safe removal function. Nobody hears, I've been years talking about this in forums. It is a very dangerous bug
because it is silent, and many non professional people is experiencing random errors in their backup data. PLEASE, INVESTIGATE THIS. YOU NEED TO FIX SUCH IMPORTANT BUG. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT IT IS STILL THERE SINCE 2009!!!
    Hope this helps.

I just picked up a new Mac and have been trying to transfer files backed up to an external hard drive from a PC. I was able to transfer some of the files without issue, but most of the files show that they are locked. Now that they are on the Mac I can't unlock or delete them.

  • Issue with file upload to Microsoft One Drive

    Hi,
My uploaded file(25.6MB, 44 seconds long) from Adobe Premier Elements 9  will not play on Microsoft One Drive(MOD),
Is anyone else have problems using MOD?
I created  the file  I uploaded on my  new HP Envy Computer(x64 proccessor with 8 gig of RAM).
I  created this file on the  Adobe Premier Elements 9  software, saved to my computer, and then uploaded to MOD.
I created it from my project  by choosing the MPEG category  Then within the MPEG category  I chose the HD 720p 30 footprint as the smallest and fastest option to upload.
. I saved as a file  in a folder on my computer.  Don't know if this makes a difference but when I right clicked I chose "Windows Media Player" as the "Opens With" option.Don't think "Opens With" option really matter? Doesn't MOD automatically convert the file to whatever they want to use to open the file anyway?
So that is the file I uploaded  to MOD using the MOD  "Upload" button.
When I clicked to play, after waiting for what I assume was a "buffering process" , I got  a "Sorry, This video can't be played." message.
Also, FYI , i uploaded to Google Drive . It plays but pauses to buffer about 30 seconds in.
You Tube is the another drive I uploaded to. It plays perfectly there. But I would preferr to play on MOD. You feedback appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Transferring files over from the hard drive of a previous computer. How can I get my library back?

A couple weeks ago, my old, old laptop finally breathed its last breath and shut off suddenly while I was using it. Various parts of it were broken anyway so I got a new one rather than try to figure out what was wrong with it. All of my files were totally undamaged since it wasn't a hard drive issue, so I just got one of those enclosure things where you unscrew your old hard drive, stick it into the enclosure, plug it into your new computer with a USB cord, and then can drag all your old files onto the new computer.
I could get all my old music back this way by dragging those folders, but if I want to get my library back -- specifically, my playlists, and ideally my info on play counts/date added/etc -- is there a way that I can do that? Is there some "Library" file, series of files, or folder that I can drag onto my new laptop in order to get those things back without having to recreate all my playlists and lose my play info?
Have been running Windows 7 on both my old and current laptop, and was using iTunes version 10.7.0.21, if that information is necessary. Can give you whatever other info you'd need. Thanks!

    1. By default, it will be in the same folder as the iTunes Music or iTunes Media folder. If you don't find it, search the computer for items with that name.
    2. Wherever you want.

i have been using this for a while, with no problems, including on hosted machines.
the upload to the database works fine.. not the issue, and the download script also works fine, on the local WAMP machine.
but once moved to the server it fails.. the query does not work.
i have a feeling that it is something to do with the managed hosting i am using, but they say no, i have tried it on 2 seperate hosted machines (different providers), with no joy.
if i run the select query on the hoisting server via phpmyadmin, the query runs ok.
any suggestions as to what may be causing the problem on the server compared to the local WAMP machine?
i really don't know where to start looking, or where to point the hosting company.
This is the php code to download the blob data, works fine on local WAMP setup, browser asks if you want to save the file/open etc. as expected.

    Hi Gun,
You are the only one responded to my issue. I have allocated some points.
Yes. I have checked the assignment in CRM organizational model.
I did download the org. structure from ECC 5.0
All objects including sales offices are activated for determination and I have verified with green light
As per your suggestion if the sales area data is not matched between the two systems, then how come the error will not reappear during the bdoc reprocess?
What is missing during the first time bdoc process? Looks something is missing for validation module?
    Any inputs?

I suspect that the issue with the EFI partition is unrelated to your Mac’s slow performance. I have had this same error message with Disk Utility. The EFI partition is related to firmware updates, and as it is not even booted when you boot from your usual boot drive, it is not relevant. (I was able to repair the EFI partition with Techtool Pro 7 , though, but then it reappeared, which makes me think it is a bug with Disk Utility.)
I’d uninstall the following items, which are frequent flyers on the list of culprits for misbehaving macs:
    Blackberry
    google keystone agent
    Chrome
Perian stopped being supported by the developer before Mountain Lion, so I doubt that it’s compatible with Mavericks.
I have the same 8,2, BTW, and it is very fast. I like Kappy's suggestion. If getting rid of those 4 items above doesn't fix the problem, then a clean install (and not reinstalling your old "utilities" or other junk) will.
