Issues Playing SWFs in Captivate 5.5
Hi all,
I'm hoping you can help me out with this problem. I am trying to insert about 10 .swf videos into my Captivate 5.5 project and they will not play in Preview or in a browser. I added them by going to Insert > Animation and the animation outline shows on the screen. The linkage shows the clip located locally on my desktop and the source points to the .fla file, which is also local. Each .swf was created by me and is done using AS3. I do have the files in .flv but am trying to avoid using them due to receiving a loading screen for about a half second before autoplaying each video. Can anyone point me in the right direction? There is nothing on the slides besides the .swf file. The .swf files play without any issue from my desktop using Flash Player 10.
Thanks,
Anthony
Welcome to our community
Sorry but we need more information. Your post is similar to walking into a garage and saying your car won't go. It leaves too much to the imagination.
Does it start? Does it go into gear? Does it sputter and die when you press the accelerator pedal? Are the brakes locked up?
So you told us you inserted an FLV and it doesn't play. Where are you expecting to see it play?
Did you expect to see the FLV begin playing immediately upon inserting it on the slide? Like you would if you opened a YouTube page on the web? If so, that doesnt' happen. You just inserted a placeholder that will present the video after you publish your movie.
Did you preview and you aren't seeing the video play during the preview? If so, how exactly did you preview? There are many ways. Perhaps the manner in which you are previewing doesn't allow the video.
Did you publish and you aren't seeing the video after you publish? If so, where are you running the file from? Local PC or did you copy it to a web server?
As you can hopefully see, there aren't any pat answers. We need lots more information.
Cheers... Rick

I've created a training program for employees, using
Captivate 2. The program went out on CD, and now I'm getting a
handful of employees saying that the CD doesn't run on their
computers (company-issued, so basically the same image on all of
them)...What happens is the following: when opening the
presentation, it will speed through several slides and finally
settle on one that looks like 2 slides, one on top of the other.
Initially, I thought some bad disks went out...but then I
tried 2 of the "bad" disks on other computers (again, company
issued, same model, basically the same image) - and both disks
worked perfectly fine!
Anybody else encounter this problem? Could this be a setting
or codec I have to change, or a dvd-rom driver issue? Or a Flash
update or something? I'm at a loss, but need this problem
corrected!
The computers that didn't work are Dell Laptops, models D610,
D620
It did work on a Dell D630
All computers are running Windows XPPro; IE 6.0.2900.2180;
Flash Player 9.0.115.0Thanks for your quick response, Rick! I'm actually not 100%
positive - the computers with the issues are for remote users (in
various states in the US), so I don't have access to them...I'm
going off what the users told me...I am having them upgrade to the
latest Flash version anyway, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to
have them try downloading the file from our website - to rule out a
bad CD (which I doubt it is, since the same CD works fine in
another computer) or dvd-rom driver issue.
Any other ideas I can try? Thanks again! -
Problems in using Flash swf in captivate 5
Hi,
I am using captivate 5 and in that for a project I created some flash animation in flash cs4 and using the swf output file in captivate.
So the problem is this:
When I publish the project and try playing the project(exe/html output), those flash swf animations are not playing properly or not at all playing.
There are around 40-50 slides in captivate and around 90% of those files contain flash swf animation. Some of the animations are playing and some are not.
In flash cs4 the action script version is 3 and also I tried publishing the project in both flash player 9 and 10 but still some animations are not playing. Its random.
Any fix for that? Its urgent.
Thanks in advance. There's a known issue with the way Captivate 5 loads SWFs. If the animation is not all on the main timeline level of the SWF, but the animation has been placed inside a symbol, Captivate triggers the animations to play when the SWF is loaded right at the beginning of the movie instead of making them play only on the slide where the SWF should play. This means that by the time your movie gets to the slide in question, the animation has already finished playing, and it looks to you like it won't play, when in fact it already HAS played.
This issue only affects SWFs with animation inside symbols, which is unfortunately the way most Flash animation designers are taught to create them. It can be fixed via some AS3 code inside the SWF, but this is only possible if you have access to the FLA files used to create the SWF, and you know how to use Flash.

What Do Users Need to Play SWF
I am creating a training video with Captivate 2 for our
federal government agency. When I'm finished, I'm going to publish
it as an .SWF file. One of the guys who designs on our web pages
asked me what program users need to view the Captivate.swf file.
The answer is apparently is either Shockwave or the Adobe Flash
Player. Or could it be either one? I'm obviously confused about
this. If the users in our federal govt. agency don't have the
correct software, they can't play the .swf file.
Can someone please clarify this issue for me? Do the users
need Shockwave, Adobe Flash, or can both applications play .swf
files?
Thanks,

Flash not playing correctly in Captivate
I have Captivate 4 and Flash CS4. I have created a Flash .swf in Actionscript 3.0 that has several interactions. I have placed stop(); in Frame one, Frame 5, and Frame 10 and then depending on the interaction I have gotoAndPlay (5) or gotoAndPlay(10).
The resulting .swf works properly in Flash Player, but when I place the .swf into Captivate it ignores the stops in the actionscript on Frames 1 and 5 and goes directly to Frame 10.
I don't have any idea how to make it play correctly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
FrankHi Frank
Have you configured Captivate for AS3?

Flash CS6 can't open play SWF files without importing and destroying them, how can I get around this?
I'm just trying to preview an swf file in flash like I have with all previous versions. What if my SWF loads external content from an online server?
Not only does the current flash player prohibit such activity, it doesn't even pop open an error anymore saying there was an error connecting to an online source.
Normally, I would simply drag the SWF into Flash and all connections would go through. I could see traces, errors, and experience no issues.
Now I can't even do that. So what then? You have crippled a fundamental use of the program, but THANK GOD we have that deco brush that nobody asked for.
And for the record, the nature of my work benefits from not necessarily allowing the Flash Player to connect to online content. The error it pops up? That's simply another method of error checking that I require. Updating the Flash Player options is not an option.
Why would you even remove this key feature from Flash anyways? It's been there for years ... has the ratio of people importing SWFs (a rather useless gesture in an increasing OOP world) really outweighed the people using Flash as a testing environment that much? -
Unable to play SWF media embedded in PDF
Hello,
Adobe Reader does not play SWF media embedded in PDFs, if SWF version is higher than 6. I get the error "The media clip cannot be played in rhe manner that the author intended. You may need to upgrade your player software or install new player software".
I have installed Adobe Reader 9.3.0 and Acrobat Flash Player 10. Acrobat Flash Player plays all my SWF files without problem in Firefox browser .
If I change version byte to 6 in the SWF media, Reader happily plays it.
Best regards,

I have a project that is published as SCORM 1.2 with a bunch of RTMP videos served from CloudFront. I tend to set the Slide duration to 5 secs and the Buffer value to 3Secs and choose Auto-Play, Auto-Rewind Display for Rest of Slde, and select "Pause slide till end of video". These settings typically have worked fine but recently some of the videos are repeating (playing twice) while Captivate Slide paused. I've tried all sorts of combinations but it seems intermittent. I thought of not pausing the Slide and setting the slide duration to the video duration plus a little extra but am a little worried that if there is buffering that the Captivate presentation will go ahead before the video finishes. Could anyone shed any light ?
Fergalyes, they are SWF 8 files, and i see them separately after i
publish from captivate...is there a way to force them to embed (if
thats better)? it seems like it kind of randomly decides which it
wants to do.
also, i do have the source files and i'll try that blank
frame and let you know if that fixes anything. thanks! -
How to play SWF with AxShockwaveFlash control using a stream rather than a file path?
My WinForm app downloads and plays SWF files from my server. Currently, I have an object of type AxShockwaveFlash called "flash" display the movie. The code I use to load the SWF is:
flash.Movie = "http://example.com/file.swf"
The URL is generated dynamically by the module based on what the user wants to watch. I'd like to know how can I load the SWF using a memory stream rather than a file path? I have already configured my server to process the url and return the contents
of the file. What I don't know is how to read those contents within my WinForm application as a stream instead of the default which is to just provide a URL path to the movie.
For instance I think I can use the Net.HttpWebRequest object to make an HTTP request, and read the response contained in the resulting Net.HttpWebResponse into a stream, but I have no idea what I could do to that stream to feed it to AxShockwaveFlash
A very similar question was posed on
stackOverflow but I cannot make sense of the answer (I'm quite inexperienced).
I'd appreciate your help,

Not getting a true swf resize when resizing swf in captivate
I am using Captivate to generate a certain animation, that is
an external swf, played by a larger swf. OK, this is unusual.
The original problem is that when I authored the captivate to
the correct size (110 x 110 pixels), the animated text letters were
unacceptably aliased, choppy. No problem I thought. I'll simply
create a captivate 220x220, then publish at 50% size and thus have
an anti-aliased and good looking text in my little animation. And
it does look good when I preview it in Captivate.
However I notice that when I use the master swf to play the
reduced captivate swf (I do not define in the master swf what size
the reduced captivate swf should display at), it keeps wanting to
display at 220x220! This is very odd. Is captivate not really
natively reducing the size of the swf when I publish to be reduced?
Your help would be appreciated!Instead of extending JPanel in ColeMain, why not extend JFrame?? Then you will be able to explicitly set the size.
From your main method, you will be able to remove the part where you instantiate the new JFrame. You only have to instantiate the instance of class ColeMain.
Use the setSize method on the JFrame simply by using setSize(int, int), instead of myframe.setSize(). -
Difference between published Captivate 5.5 swf and Captivate 7 swf?
I have a custom SCORM framework built in Flash that handles all of the calls to an LMS, and I simply insert published SWFs from Captivate; everything has been working great for a few years now. The problem I am experiencing now is that content that I have published from Captivate 5.5 shows up just fine, but I upgraded to Captivate 7 and now the SWF files hang during loading, or simply show a black screen. My client uses SumTotal LMS, so I first thought it might be an issue with the LMS, but this is the case in every single LMS I have tested in, so it is definitely some anomaly in the different versions of the published files.
So I guess I am trying to figure out what is different between the two SWFs published in different versions?I don't think so that it is the soulotion for this problem , but you in publish setting/ start and end part (something like this, I don't remember the name completely ) / you can turn off the preloader and fade in at start checkbox and turn on the autoplay.
this can solve the problem temporary till adobe find better way for it . -
Issue playing movies downloaded from iTunes on TV when linked to computer via HDMI cable.
Recently I purchased the advance digital copy of "Star Trek Into Darkness" as it was it was released just in time for moving some people into another state; we planned to watch it when we rested for the day. After hooking my windows 7 laptop up to a Samsung flatscreen TV using an HDMI cable, iTunes refused to play the movie. It would play when the computer was disconnected from the TV, and the same error would appear when reconnected. The error stated that I had to be connected to an "HDCP compatible device."
Is this some way of iTunes forbidding me from watching movies downloaded from their service when connected to an exterior device? My computer has no issues playing other content, such as netflix, when connected to a TV.
For me it's pointless to buy movies now from iTunes; I feel like I've wasted $20. Why on earth would I want to sit in front of a computer to watch it when there's a TV five times the size available?Hello happylilvampyr,
Unfortunately, this is due to a lack of HDCP support provided by the TV in use. More information regarding HDCP can be found in the following article.
iTunes for Windows: Unable to view or play HD video content that requires HDCP
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3354
As an alternative, you can always download the movie in standard definition, which will allow for viewing on non-HDCP devices.
When you purchase an HD video on a supported device or computer, only HD video will be downloaded. To download the SD version, you need to download the video again from your Purchased page. Conversely, if you purchase an HD video on an unsupported device, the SD version will be downloaded. Then, you will need to download the HD version from your Purchased page. OSX 10.5.2 and AR8.1.2 playing swf files
After applying the latest Apple updates to OSX 10.5.2 I find that I can no longer play
swf files from within a PDF file. I'm using AR8.1.2 with FP9,0,115,0 . Consider
the example:
http://www.amrita-cfd.org/4adobe/swf/swf.pdf
It contains an /Annot "Click to activate SWF!" that is supposed
to play the swf, but when I click it: a progress bar "buffering" appears
in the bottom right corner of the screen and then hangs. The swf file
is included as an attachment, shock-tube.swf, which can be
opened in an external viewer and so I don't think the swf file
is the problem.
I have the same problem with the PDF available at:
http://acrobat.timhuff.net/?p=92
where the swf is embedded using Acrobat,
rather than my homebrew approach.
I would very grateful if anyone could shed light
on this problem.
Thanks,
James QuirkJames,
I am seeing what you are seeing even on pdfs with swfs that I created
that previously worked. I guess we will need to file a bug report.

Is there a way to play SWF (Flash Player) files on QuickTime? Thanks.
You've gotten some correct and incorrect answers. Here's the stuff you need to know.
The free Quicktime Player can open and view .swf (Flash) only if the files were "published" from the Flash app that created them in Flash version 5 format.
Since Flash has moved to version nine there are many of those files to be found.
QuickTime can also play Flash (same version 5 requirements) inside QuickTime formats like .mov but you must "enable" that option using the QuickTime System Preference pane.
I use Flash tracks in many of my older QuickTime .mov files and they work just like those viewed in the Flash Player (mouse clicks and interactivity). Here is one example I made in 2002:

Here is another example using Flash tracks as a movie controller:
