Issues Running applications/opening files

       What has been suggested as a software issue has been present in my customers computer for months.
   Heres whats happening...
1. When a user attempts to open a program/application such as google chrome, documents library, itunes etc.... There is a prompt that appears on the screen showing a program reccomended to open the "file" the customer is trying to access.
    a. The program under the recommended section is called, Doxillion Document Converter by NCH Software
 2. Another interesting thing i noticed is that the majority of program icons on the desktop are not as they should be. They are instead replaced with an icon which is literally a blank page with a corner folded forward in the upper right hand corner.
 These things which im describing have basically made the computer disfonctional, and the suggested document converter is present to stop whatever function they may attempt to use the computer for.
Lets work out a solution!

Hi, that sounds like associations etc have been hijacked by malware or other potentially unwanted programs (Doxillion).
I would suggest, if you are not running windows 8 but are running on windows 7 or earlier, then head over to bleepingcomputer.com and download RKill, Combofix & AdwCleaner
VERY IMPORTANT!!
Any AntiVirus software must be disabled before running ComboFix.
If you use AVG then you MUST uninstall it completely before running ComboFix.
Failure to do this could cause Windows to fail on startup.
ComboFix is a hardcore, aggressive virus removal tool & can remove any virus & repair damage done by most of them..
 1. Run RKill, this disables anything malicious that may be running in the background,
 2. Run Combofix, will take between 10-25 mins, once finished, wait for the computer to reboot. Problem should now be sorted.
(3) Probably wont be necessary, but run AdwCleaner, just to quickly scan for a few more things, only takes 1 minute..
After a restart, things should be back to normal.
Another great virus removal tool is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, the scan just takes a while, and i have recently come accross an infection that it could not remove.
If you are on Windows 8 or 8.1, you CANT use Combofix, so instead do the following:
1. RKill   ( running this will terminate any problematic malware etc that may be active. to be ran 1st to shutdown anything that may interfere with malware scanners )
2. AdwCleaner ( a fast effective anti-Adware/anti-malware scanner )
3. Junkware Removal Tool ( A different scanner to use after the above )
4. TDSSKiller ( another quick scanning tool, just to be sure )
5. Malwarebytes Anti Malware
Hope this helps

  • Run applications ( .jar files) by bash on linux

    On linux:
    I have a swing application and its jar file. I created an executable file using bash script to run the jar file
    #!/bin/bash
    java -jar myapp.jar
    this runs in console normally but when i clicked the executable file, the application runs too but immediately closes. I think the problem is that this can't recognize the swing-layout.jar (swing library) so that the swing components (JFrame,Jbutton) cannot be showed!
    There must be a way for the executable file to recognize the libraries (swing, layouts) for the application by using bash script ?

    There can be number of reasons for that. I suggest you following way:
    1. Modify your script in following way:
    #!/bin/bash
    java -jar myapp.jar 2>/tmp/log.err 1>/tmp/log.out
    After unsuccesful execution check content of /tmp/log.* files and see details of the error.
    Often such errors are caused by environment. May be you just don have java in your PATH .. May
    be DISPLAY is not set .. I don't know.
    To workaround env issue you need to dump environmentin from console:
    declare -x >env.sh
    After that include update your .sh script in following way and see the difference:
    #!/bin/bash
    . env.sh
    java -jar myapp.jar 2>/tmp/log.err 1>/tmp/log.out

  • Application opens, file doesn't

    Every time I double-click a JPG or other photoshop file in the finder (10.3.9) on a G5 the application PhotoShop CS opens, and that's all. The file that was double-clicked doesn't open. The only way I can open a file for PhotoShop is from within PhotoShop using File/Open or the File Browser. I have trashed known PhotoShop prefs and have fixed permissions. I also changed the default application away from PhotoshopCS to something else and changed it back again, no change... Any other ideas? It used to work..

    Well Pat, I am basically lazy and when I started having that trouble---not all of them just a select few that PS decides not to open...I put PS in the doc then drag/drop the file to the icon and then it will open.
    Now mind you for some reason there are still some files that even from within PS will nto open, maybe they had corrupted fonts embedded??? I do not know.
    If all else fails you could try reinstalling PS

  • HT3680 My 3 year old iMac is freezing and I get a message "startup disk almost full for running applications. delete files..." Where do I find the startup disk and what should I delete?

    My 3 year old Mac is having trouble and freezes up from time to time lately. I get a message saying "startup disk almost full, delete files ..." something about having enough room for applications to function.  I know my startup disk is the Macintosh HD, but what kind of files do I need to delete and how much space do I need to free up?  In my "about this mac" area, it says I have 4.89gb free out of 319.21  So I am confused why I need to do this.

    You're less than 2% free and should always have at least 15% (my SWAG). Best is to get an ext FWHD and move stuff from the startup disk to it and delete it from that. Best things to move are movies, music, and photos, using the apps that manage those things.

  • Issue running parallel audio files

    I am trying to set up a XIB with two buttons to play audio - one for music and one for narration.  Files for music are stored in a music directory within the resources bundle.  Files for narration (with names different than the music file names) are stored in a narration directory within the same resources bundle.
    When I installed just the music portion, it played fine on both the Simulator and on my iPad.
    After I added very parallel code for the narration portion, things got strange.
         IN THE SIMULATOR
              The NSLog for the music path was unchanged and the music played.
              The NSLog for the narration path showed NULL and obviously failed - OSStatus -50
         ON THE IPAD (with no change of code)
              The NSLog for the music path now showed NULL and also failed - OSStatus -50
              The NSLog for the narration path showed NULL and failed - OSStatus -50
    I also commented out the code related only to the music path, but that made no change in the effect on the narration path.
    A view of the essential code follows.  What do I need to do different to get the narration path to work?  And to keep the music path working on the iPad?
    - (void)viewDidLoad
        [super viewDidLoad];
    NSString *musicTrack = . . .; (defined here)
    NSString *musicDirectory = . . .; (defined here)
    NSString *narrationTrack = . . .; (defined here)
    NSString *narrationDirectory = . . .;    (defined here)
    NSString *resourcesBundlePath = [[NSBundle mainBundle]pathForResource:@"Resources" ofType:@"bundle"];
    NSBundle *resourcesBundle = [NSBundle bundleWithPath:resourcesBundlePath];
    NSString *pathToAudioMusicFile = [resourcesBundle pathForResource:musicTrackofType:@"m4a" inDirectory:musicDirectory];
    NSLog ( @"Music path: %@", pathToAudioMusicFile);
    // Now use same resourcesBundle for the Audio Narration Player
    NSString *pathToAudioNarrationFile = [resourcesBundle pathForResource: narrationTrackofType:@"m4a" inDirectory:narrationDirectory];
    NSLog ( @"Narration path: %@", pathToAudioNarrationFile);

    This really sounds like a question for the Developer Forums.

  • Spinning wait cursor (rainbow wheel) when opening files

    For the last couple months, I've been experiencing performance issues when I open files from applications...more precisely, when I select the open-files option, NOT opening the files themselves.  I select "open-file" and it gives me the spinning wheel and hangs for about 15 seconds, after which I get the open files dialog box.
    It's not related to any particular program as it seems to occur with most.  It's not every time but happens mostly for the first file opened after I start a software application but not always.  I haven't installed any new software I can think of.  I updated to OSX 10.8 when it came out but I don't believe I had any issues afterwards...only in the last couple months.
    Anybody have any thoughts?
    Jeff

    Clear your Caches.
    In finder:
    Go menu (while holding option) > Library > you should see a caches file, drag it to your trash
    Next
    Go menu > Computer > Mac HD > Library > You should see another Caches file here, delete all of it's contents but not the folder itself
    now empty your trash. You will get some message boxes that may say 'this operation cannot be completed.....just hit continue whenever these pop up
    Now boot your computer in safe mode by holding shift when starting it up until you see a progress bar, then release. This will delete some useless internet temporary files.
    (just as a disclaimer, these are commen steps and they sound volatile but will not hurt your system and are a great ting to do every couple of months or so) I almost gaurantee you this will speed up your machine
    if the problem presists you may want to try a PRAM reset
    hold down command + option + P + R when powering on your computer until you hear the startup chime 2 times and then release.
    Cheers!

  • My track pad highlights applications and files and then opens them without my doing anything. I run MacKeeper and having run the scan several times only get cleaning issues (5 -). Any ideas as MacKeeper Kromtech have not responded to my calls nor email.

    Folks
    I run an iMac. Today for some reason when I run the cursor across the screen applications and files are highlighted and then opened without me doing anything (no clicking etc) In fact print at times opens. As far as I can tell I have not changed any settings except to open firewall.
    I run MacKeeper and when I run a scan only a few cleaning items open. Safe and fast are as they should be. I run fix. If I again run the scan I get a few more but different claeing items to fix.
    I have rung MacKeeper several times without getting through. The occasion I did get through the bloke said he could not help and passed me to a higher authority. Needless to say the line dropped out after 30 minutes waiting.
    As it is the weekend and I do not live near an Apple store I am quite keen to get the problem identified and fixed so I can continue working.
    Your assistance please.

    Remove the "MacKeeper" scam product as follows. First, back up all data.
    "MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
    Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
    IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
    from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
    ☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
    ☞ Don't empty the Trash. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
    ☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.

  • How do I create an Application with Automator that will open files in Photoshop Elements 11 and run an action?

    Here's what I'd really like the Script to do when I select one main folder:
    Look through all the subfolders, find all the PNG files and convert them to TIFFs, replacing the original PNG files.
    Open the converted TIFF files in PSE 11.
    Run an action on them in PSE 11 (which I already created that adds a white fill layer below the TIFF file.)
    Save each file in their original location and Close each file.
    Import them into LR.
    Anybody?  Bueller?  Bueller?
    If that's not possible, I'd love an Automator action that can convert the PNG files to TIFFs that can be viewed in LR 4.4.  If I convert them in PSE 11, LR can view them, but if I convert them using Automator, LR cannot.
    Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

    LabVIEW 7 added a property to get a command line argument. For older versions see http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/niepd_web_display.display_epd4?p_guid=B45EACE3DA5B56A4E034080020E74861.
    I'm not sure I understand you problem with the Run button. If you set the execution mode to Run When Opened from VI Properties, it should execute once whenever it's called. I think that when building an executable, it changes the property to this if it's not already set. If the application does not have this set, it will not be running at all. I'm assuming that you are talking about the Run button on the toolbar and not a run Boolean that you've created on the front panel.
    Since you have the app builder, your other option is to create a DLL. If you can call a DLL in Matlab, then that would probably be simpler.

  • Change All / Get Info issue. How to set which application  opens a file?

    Hello,
    I would like to be able to set which application opens a specific file, but cannot get the 'Change all' option in the get info to stick, or to have scvope beyond the immediate folder. For example: whenever I download an.xml file and try to open it the application it defaults to is 'Property List editor' - so I have to go into 'get info' and set the application that I want to use to open the file. Let's say - Textmate. That file will then remain set, for the length of that session anyway - but clicking 'Change all' will not mean that the next file downloaded will default to 'Textmate', or that any .xml files outside the folder will open in Textmate. I have to set them all manually, which gets to be a drag.
    I once had a little open source app. that I used to set the preferences as to which application opened a specific suffix - which worked with some, some of the time... but after a clean install I lost it - and can't remember what it was called. Anyway, it didn't entirely solve the problem, only lessened it.

    *Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind*
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more. Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.
    I know that what I posted may have been what you have been doing, but wanted to double check.
    I don't know to what application you are referring but application/file type association is done by Launch Services. Potentially this can become corrupted. You can use Onyx (free) utility to rebuild LS, but in doing so you will lose all non-default associations.
    As with any problems, I would also make sure you have run disk utility to verify and repair your drive, and repair permissions on your computer, before doing any other actions. It's surprising what that can clear up. You can slo just try starting in Safe mode, then restarting normally and see if that helps.

  • Crashes when running applications from network share - "Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons"

    Hi,
    starting a couple of weeks ago, we get the following error(s) when running applications from a network share. We don't know what causes this, we are not aware of any major changes in our network infrastructure or client/Server configuration. We did upgrade
    a lot of machines to Windows 8, but the issue also occurs on older Win7 computers.
    We figured out a workaround though: The applications run fine when launching from a FQDN share (like
    \\share.domain.Company.com) and only cause problems when running from
    \\share directly. They have worked fine for years without FQDN though.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    >>The applications run fine when launching from a FQDN share
    It sounds like a DNS suffix issue. When this issue occurs, please try to ping share on the client, then check if the corresponding IP address is correct. If the IP address is wrong, please adjust your settings of DNS to make sure that the client can resolve
    the share correctly.
    If it's very hard to change the settings of the DNS for some reason, as a work around, we can add the entry into the clients' hosts file.
    Best Regards.

    Hi,
    Please try to reset the Internet Explorer settings or open Internet Explorer in In-Private browsing and then check if this issue occurs.
    If the issue persists, please try to access SharePoint in another computer with Office 2013 and then check if this issue occurs. Or repair Office and restart your server.
    Here is a blog about the same issue for you to take a look at:

  • Opening files crashes Applications and closes Finder

    As I've been unofficial Apple "IT" for our graphics team in a biased world of PC and our IT haven't the knowhow or inclination to help I need REAL support!
    After the last security etc update my iTunes crashed every time I tried to open it (Dock or Folder).
    Re-installed from the Apple web download.
    It now works.
    Now when I open a job folder through Finder on the desktop then select the file to open Finder closes.
    When I have an application open - say Photoshop CS2 - and go > File > Open, once I select the file to open Photoshop "unexpectedly quits".
    This goes for ANY application!
    BUT...If I drag a file to the application on the dock all is well?
    If I want to place images /graphics etc from one application to whatever is open I now can't
    I hold hands high as not being the most in-depth technical Mac man but have a general feel for most niggles having grown with Classic onwards!
    This something new and hopefully someone can shine a light?

    You should do it from Disk Utility on your start-up disk.
    What are permissions?
    Every file and folder on a Mac OS X hard drive has a set of permissions—settings that determine which user(s) have access to each item, and exactly what that access is. For example, permissions dictate whether or not a particular user can open and edit a particular file. But permissions also determine which items the operating system—or specific parts of it—can access and modify, and which files are accessible by applications.
    What does repairing permissions do?
    The Repair Disk Permissions function—the process that actually performs the task of repairing permissions—examines certain files and folders on your Mac’s hard drive to see if their current permissions settings are what Mac OS X expects them to be; if discrepancies are found, the offending permissions are changed to match the expected settings.
    (In Mac OS X 10.3 and later, repairing permissions also performs one other, unrelated, task: If the invisible /tmp symbolic link—which is linked to the /private/tmp directory—is missing, the link will be recreated.)
    Why is it necessary to repair permissions?
    If permissions on particular files are “incorrect”—i.e., not what Mac OS X expects them to be or not what they need to be for your Mac’s normal operation—you can experience problems when the operating system tries to access or modify those files. For example, you may have trouble logging in to your account, printing, launching applications, or even starting up your Mac. Similarly, if an application—from Apple or a third-party developer—needs access to a particular file or folder to function, and the permissions on that item have changed in a way that prevents such access, the application may not function properly (or at all). The Repair Disk Permissions function can fix such problems by ensuring that certain files have the correct permissions.
    There’s also a security element here: Many system-level files have permissions set a particular way so that applications or users that shouldn’t be meddling with those files can’t. If the permissions on certain system-level files somehow get changed so that access to those files is no longer restricted, you’ve got the potential for a major security issue. Repairing permissions can resolve such issues by resetting permissions on those files to prevent unauthorized access.
    How do I repair permissions?
    The Repair Disk Permissions function is part of Apple’s Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). After launching Disk Utility, select the desired disk—generally your startup disk—in the list to the left, then click the First Aid tab. At the bottom of the First Aid panel, click the Repair Disk Permissions button. (You could instead use the Verify Disk Permissions option to preview any potential repairs before performing them, but for most users there’s little benefit from this extra step.)
    Permissions can also be repaired via the shell (Terminal) by using the command sudo diskutil repairPermissions /. However, it’s unlikely that the typical user will ever need to perform the task in this manner. It’s useful if for some reason Disk Utility itself won’t launch, or for repairing permissions on a remote Mac when connected via Remote Login (SSH), but otherwise you’re just as well served using Disk Utility.
    How does the Repair Disk Permissions function know what the “correct” permissions are?
    When you use Apple’s Installer utility to install software (such as Mac OS X itself or an OS X update), the installation package (the .pkg file you double-click to begin installation, or that Software Update downloads in the background for an automatic installation) generally leaves behind a receipt—a smaller Mac OS X package that includes information about every file installed, including the permissions each file should have. This receipt is placed in /Library/Receipts. When you run the Repair Disk Permissions function, it examines the receipts in the /Library/Receipts directory of the disk being repaired—which means the feature works only on volumes with Mac OS X installed—and compares the information in the receipt with the actual files on your drive. If the Repair Disk Permissions function finds a file with permissions that differ from what a receipt claims they should be, that file’s permissions are reset to their receipt-specified values. (If you’re curious about the information contained in a receipt, the easiest way to view it is to use the utility Pacifist; simply drag and drop the appropriate receipt into the Pacifist window and you’ll be presented with a list of all files installed by the similarly-named installation package, along with each file’s original permissions.)
    It’s worth noting here that although the function is called “Repair Disk Permissions,” what is actually happening is that files’ permissions are being reset or restored to a particular state. It’s possible—though not common—for a particular file’s permissions to differ from what a receipt claims they should be without those permissions actually being “broken.”
    Are all files affected by Repair Disk Permissions?
    No. As you may have inferred from the above description, only those files installed using OS X’s Installer utility and whose installation packages leave behind a proper receipt in /Library/Receipts are affected by the Repair Disk Permissions function. This means that most of the files affected by the Repair Disk Permissions function are system-level files, application files, or system add-ons—not applications installed by drag-and-drop, and not your documents or other user-level files.
    If repairing permissions is useful in general, why doesn’t Apple recommend it as routine maintenance?
    Apple does, quite explicitly:
    It’s a good idea to repair disk permissions as a regular maintenance task after upgrading or installing new software.
    That’s taken from Mac Help—in both Panther and Tiger—right on your Mac. Similar statements can be found in other Support articles.
