Issues updating iPhone software
I am trying to update my iphone software using my laptop computer and I get the message "The iphone software server could not be contacted". Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?
Check Hosts file if this is blocking Computer's free access to Apple servers.
Remove all entries containing gs.apple.com, reboot and try.

While updating iphone software to 5.0.1, I am getting error that Iphone could not be updated because the firmware file not compatible.

First did a full back up of iphone using iTunes
Put iphone into Recovery Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 ). Erases all user data and settings!
Disconnected USB cable from iphone
Powered off iphone by holding down Sleep/Off button until slider appeared, slid to off, waited until screen dark
Pressed and kept holding Home button while plugging cable back into phone
I still saw the graphic on the iphone that said to plug into iTunes, so I unplugged and re-plugged cable. (I may have released the Home button too soon)
Recovery Mode alert came up in iTunes.
Followed all iTunes prompts to restore phone - it downloaded and sucessfully installed iOS 5.0.1
iphone did not appear in iTunes due to missing pairing file (that made me nervous)
iphone was now at factory settings. I followed prompts on iphone screen to start reactivation process
Eventually the iphone asked if I wanted to restore from a back-up (whew!)
A window opened in iTunes and I was able to select my previous back-up file for the restore
A full restore from back-up then occured
I also allowed a carrier settings update to occur when prompted (not sure that happens in all cases)
When the restore was done I had to re-enter some passwords, but everything was there
iOS is now 5.0.1 (9A406). The whole process took about an hour. -
Always have issues downloading iPhone software updates
I have ongoing issues downloading iPhone software, I've been trying for weeks to get the latest update. It will begin to download and get relatively close then time out, my internet connection disconnects and I get an error message in iTunes that the network connection is gone or something to that effect.
Any suggestions?What kind of Internet connection do you have? One thing I have done just to make sure nothing happens to the iPhone when I'm updating is when it asks about updating, I tell it to just download the update, not download and update. That way if the download fails, it doesn't affect the iPhone. Sometimes as Internet traffic gets heavy it can affect the downloading. Slow connections can also affect this.

Anybody else experienced this when trying to update iPhone software to 5.1.1???
How have you resolved this issue.

If you are using a Windows based computer, could be security software and or the firewall preventing the update process.

I've downloaded the ios7 software to my iphone but it didn't let me install it over air so I connected my iphone to itunes and updated it .. it's now stuck half way through saying 'updating iphone software' it's been like that for 40 mins .. should I be worried?
I imagine a ton of people are attempting to activate after the update, and the server is getting overloaded. Simple patience, maybe keep trying, and if possible, try a little later. Think of it as all those people lining up at Apple Stores + about a million more.

Installed new iTunes on iMac. Trying to update iPhone software. iTunes says network connection could not be established. All other network connections are working fine.
Correct, and read the other 100 posts about this today. You and the owners of a couple of other million i-devices are all trying to update at the same time and you're encountering a traffic jam.
Some have said changing DNS servers helped, or maybe it is snake oil.

attempting to update iphone software via pc. itunes engaged. back up does not appear to have occurred. device now locked. requesting restore action. anyway to save photos in this status? or restore after?
it was just the biggest mistake of today, not my life :P
restoration steps i took were:
1. connect the dead phone to another pc with itunes turned on
2. follow the notifications on that itunes
3. restore the phone
4. disconnect the phone after the restoration without clicking any buttons of that itunes
5. connect the phone to my own pc
6. my own pc can recognize the phone and itunes will try to restore the backup of my phone
7. restore from the backup on my pc
8. sync everything (tick all the apps in itunes manually since there is no such button to select all) and reorganize all the apps
9. after ca. 25 min, the phone is back to the previous sw version -
Having problems updating iphone software to version 5.0
I currently have version 4.3.1 and finally decided to update iphone software to version 5.0. It goes through the 6 minute process, but then I get the error message: "There was a probem downloading the software for the IPhone -----. The network connection ttimed out. Make sure your network setting are correct and your network connection is active or try again later."
I've tried several times and keep getting the same message. My network connection is active and I've just the firewall and made sure it allows itunes updates.
Please help! Any other suggestions? When answering please be very specific - I'm really clueless with the computer.

Plug in, click update software, and click download ONLY.
Let the ipsw file download complete,... then click update.
This way is much better. If you keep having error message, its either your internet connection is inconsistent or Apple's server is inconsistent... usually more likely the former. -
Firmware 3.1 update sitting at "Updating iPhone Software" for about an hour
I am running on 10.6 OS X, iTunes 9, my phone backed up successfully, but it's sitting at the Updating iPhone Software for nearly an hour now. It is at around 75% on that step and looks like its only 10% on the phone itself.

On at least 2 occasions, when I updated Iphone software and synced with MacBook, my newest calendar events were deleted. The information in Ical and on IPhone reverted to an older version of events instead of defaulting to the new information. I know of at least 1 other person who experienced this; is this a common occurrence? What is the reason for it and the remedy? How do I prevent this from happening in the future?
When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive. It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas? I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.

i am updating my iPhone4s with the most recent OS software update and its been almost 3 hrs now and it has not completed its update. It is still " verifying updated iPhone software. How long does it take for the update to be completed. Thanks
Well the term "hotlined" I have never heard before. In any case many states (like NY) just passed regulatory powers to the State Public Service Commission of which it may be called something different in your state. You could file a complaint with them. Or file a complaint with your state attorney generals office, they also take on wireless providers.
The problem here is the staff you speak to are poorly trained, in days gone by it took one call to them and they pulled up your account and see the error and had the authority to remove any errors. They did not remove legitimate account actions, but used their heads instead of putting a customer off or worse lying to the customer.
Its a shame you have to go through what you going through.
