  • Using old iPhone as iPod

Hi there, I hope someone can help.
I have the iphone 5 and lent my daughter my old iphone 4 as she had her's stolen. Her contract came up for renewal and she has a new iphone now and consequently has given me back my my old iphone 4. My question is: as she has now wiped the phone of any information, will I be able to set up and re-use it as an ipod with my information. I do not want to jeopardise anything being removed from my current iphone 5 by re-activating my old phone. Can this be done??

    Sure. Read here:

  • Can't use old iphone as ipod?

I have two old 3G iphones. One still lets me connect to itunes and use it as an ipod. The other goes back into AT&T activation when I connect it to itunes.
I didnt remove the sims and I have zero interest in learning how to jailbreak it.
The rep at the apple store said all I have to do is plug it in to itunes and it will still recognize it.
This only worked on one. Is something wrong with the other?

I did that first before I came and posted. I guess I am wondering if something is wrong with my other iphone because it wont activate the way the other one did.

  • Can I turn my old Iphone into Ipod? It says that I need a valid SIM card

can I turn my old Iphone into Ipod? It says that I need a valid SIM card

Follow these steps to use your iPhone without a wireless service plan:
Insert the SIM card from your new, activated iPhone or one that was previously used to activate the original iPhone.
Connect the iPhone to iTunes on a computer connected to the Internet.
Once iTunes activates the device, you're free to remove the SIM card and use the iPhone as if it were an iPod touch.

is there a way to use old iphones without a sim card?

Yes but if it needs activating first then a Sim card must be inserted just during the activation process
    and can then be removed

  • Using old iPhone as an iPod

I replaced my original iPhone with the second generation Model 3G. I want to use the old one as an iPod. I have a problem with iTunes. It recognizes the old iPhone as my 3G model. How can I sync both on the same computer without getting both screwed up? (I want to give the old one to a family member to use it as an iPod). Would I have no problem on a different computer (with iTunes).
The AT&T store removed the sim card; the old iPod apps seem to work OK, even those apps that use my WiFi.

Follow the directions here to use your old phone as a touch:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3406
You can sync as many devices as you want to the same itunes account, there is no limit. You can select what content you want on each device & itunes will keep everything straight, by device on subsequent syncs.
    The AT&T store removed the sim card;
THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DONE! you will need that sim to update software or restore that phone. Go back to the store, if your old sim is in your new phone, have them deactivate it and put it back in your old phone. Get a new activated sim for your new phone. They should not charge you for this. If they give you any problems, ask to talk to the manager & refer them to the support article I referenced you.

  • Trying to use old Iphone with IOS 3.1.3 as Ipod

My kids are trying to use an old Iphone Gen 1 as a Ipod.  We have successfully loaded music, but now of course they want games.  All games need a newer version of IOS.  Can I upgrade somehow?  Itunes says the IOS is up to date with no opportunity to upgrade.
    My kids will thank you!!!

Well they are apps and games in the app store which are supported with the iPhone 3G or iOS 3.1.3. Old games of course. BTW remove the sim so your kids cannot make phone calls and send SMS.

  • Problems with old iPhone as iPod

I've been using an old iPhone as an iPod for the last 2-3 months. I've been using iMessages on it and it has been working fine up until today. All of a sudden not getting any iMessages on it. I tried turning off iMessages and then back on...didn't work. I did a hard reboot...didn't work. What can I do to get it working again?

  • Can I use old iPhone 4S in Europe for WiFi, w/o cellular service? A few Qs not found in Support Community-

I wish to upgrade to iPhone 6, but first want to know if I can use my iPhone 4S for camera, iMessaging and apps (i.e. What’s App) on Wifi after it is disconnected from U.S. Verizon network?
iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.2 (reluctant to upgrade to 8.1.2), Verizon, U.S. only
Mac Mini, OSX 10.9.5 (reluctant to upgrade to OSX Yosemite)
I’ve read all of the old posts (2011 thru July 2014), but still have questions.  This is what I understand:
Upgrade iOS and apps with iTunes, before transferring to new iPhone 6
Change the name of my old iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201997 (if I wish to name my new iPhone what my old one was called)
Enable airplane mode, then re-enable just wifi
    Activate new iPhone
Transfer data to new iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2109
    QUESTIONS:
Q: When connected to WiFi in England, Italy and Sicily - do I keep it in Airplane Mode even though it has been disconnected from Verizon and I will have an active iPhone 6 on my Verizon account being used by my husband at home in the U.S.?
Q: Will there be a problem sync’ing to iTunes in the future, or my Mac Mini?  Will it conflict with my new iPhone 6?  Or is it just considered a different device, once it has a new name.
Q: How can I message my husband in the U.S. with the iPhone 6 from Europe using my old iPhone 4S on Wifi only?  Do I use my iCloud account, like I do from my Mac Mini to my iPhone?  Or can I set up a new iMessage account on the old iPhone 4S
I appreciate any insights and answers.  Thanks in advance!
    Daphne

It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.

  • Converting old iPhone into iPod

    Hey everyone,
My father recently cancelled his iPhone 3G contract and went back to a regular phone, and he converted his 3G into an iPod touch. At the same time, he got a deactivated SIM card for his old Original iPhone; however, when we plug in the original iPhone into iTunes, its asking us to set up the phone as a new AT&T phone again.
My question is, if we go ahead and set it up with his wireless number, will it charge us $30 for the data plan again even though its technically a deactivated SIM and all we are doing is activating it so the phone stops bugging us to connect to iTunes?
    Once again to clarify:
iPhone 2G + Deactivated SIM asks for setup as new phone on AT&T (but we don't want to set it up as a new phone)

You obviously don't understand what I provided.
Why are you inserting a SIM card in the first place if you want to use the iPhone as an iPod Touch? Not using the iPhone since it was deactivated 2 years ago or regardless when it was deactivated doesn't require inserting a SIM card in order to sync the iPhone with iTunes or use the iPhone as an iPod Touch.
If you are trying to install a firmware update or restore the iPhone with iTunes (which installs the current firmware) without activating the iPhone, you need to insert the no longer activated SIM card that was used with the iPhone when it was activated in order to complete the process. There is no way around this. If you activate the iPhone, it is no different from activating any other iPhone.

  • Use old iPhone after upgrade?

I bought a new iPhone and transferred my data as described here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109, and new iPhone is working great. Is it necessary to erase all data on the old iPhone? Can I continue to use the old iPhone as an iPod Touch, keeping all my old apps and music on it? What will happen next time I sync it to iTunes? Will there be any mix up between the two phones?

"Does this mean that when I buy an app on one device that it will also be available on the other one after syncing both of them to iTunes?"
Yes, as long as they sync using your iTunes account, you can d/l apps to many iPhone/Tounch devices.

  • Can I control/operate a iPad 3 using an iPhone or iPod...?

    LS,
In stead of getting an AppleTV, I want to buy an iPad 3 and install it permanently next to my LED TV. I will conntect the iPad 3 to my TV using the Digital HDMI Adapter but I need a way to control/operate the iPad 3 from a distance (like remote control) using either an iPhone or iPod or any other 3rd party device (remote control) that may exist.
    Any suggestions/comments will be appreciated.

Basically I want to avoid installing a satellite dish for Arabic channels, so there is a company offering 200+ arabic channels but you need to buy a box (receiver) which connects to the internt so toy can watch the channels. This box costs 400.00 US Dollar. This same company does have an app for iPhone and iPad and it works just perfect.
I have it on my iPhone and I can watch satellite channles on my TV through my iPhone.
Now to avoid buying a 400.00 US Dollar box, I can buy an iPad 3 for the same price, install it (semi)permanent next to the TV and watch satellite channles, so it here where the remote issue somes in: I need a device to be able to control the iPad 3 from a distance.
I'm not sure if Tango Remote is an option but since its just 5.00 US Dollar, i can buy it and test it between my Iphone 4 and my iPod (as a remote).
Additional: another alternative would be: getting the iPad, installing an AppleTV on my TV, and I can do airplay and/or mirroring on my TV.

  • Old iPhone as iPod Touch. There's a "1" badge on the phone icon

I'm setting up my old iPhone 3G to give to my dad as an iPod Touch. I erased the content, activated it, and now there's a badge on the phone icon indicating 1 voicemail message. Any way to clear this?

Update: I took the sim card out and the badge went away. I put the sim card back in and I get a "New Voicemail" alert and the badge comes back. I'm going to visit the local mall tomorrow and talk to the folks at the Apple Store and the AT&T store.
In the meantime, any ideas on clearing a voicemail alert from a phone with no service?
Plan B, do I take the sim card out and tell my dad to put it back in if he wants to update or restore the phone?
Plan C, tell dad "it's a free iphone/ipod, deal with a little red circle"?

  • Family member using old iphone

I have a family member purchasing my old iphone and wants to keep most of the content on the the phone. Her sim card is already located in the phone. Do I need to reset? Or do anything different when I hook it up to itunes? It still says it's "sara's phone" but her number is listed for the phone now. Not sure if I need to really do anything at all....any help?!

    Wipe iPhone/iPad/iPod touch clean
There are a few steps to do:
Switch off iMessage in Settings > Messages
Switch off FaceTime in Settings > FaceTime (iPod touch 4th Generation or later, iPhone 4 or later and iPad 2 or later)
Delete iCloud in Settings > iCloud > Delete Account
Finally Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
    Un-register your device: https://supportprofile.apple.com
    Now you can sell/give.
