Issues with 2011 MBP fixed?

Hi, I was wondering if the 10.6.7 update successfully fixed the major issues that were reported (screen freezing, fan running, etc.) or are these hardware issues that can't be fixed with an update? My mom wants a new laptop and I really think she should get a Mac, but I'm hesitant to order a 2011 because of these issues...it's a headache I don't want or need!
Also, are new 2010 Macbook Pro's still available anywhere? Would you recommend buying a used 2010 on ebay or is that risky?

We've purchased more than dozen Early 2011 MBP and none have those issues. Apple has a refurb section if that makes you feel better. And they have a full year warranty that you can even purchase AppleCare for.

I have a similar issue with a 2011 MBP and note that there is a considerable number of posts referring to this issue. Is completing a feedback form the best way to raise this with apple?

  • Ongoing crashing and power issues (late 2011 MBP)

    Hi everyone,
I'm having some really irritating ongoing issues with my 15" unibody MBP, which I purchased new from Apple in Dec 2011. All okay 'til now apart from a hard drive replacement in May when the other one suddenly died (no reason given).
What's happening is that I will be doing some low key activity - internet etc (not overheating nor fans on) - and it will suddenly switch off in a second, almost like it's short circuited. Nothing like the kind of delayed, slow shut down when running out of battery, just a ping without a 'ping'. It then won't respond to being turned on via power button, the battery lights on the side won't light up, and the magsafe light is also off and not charging. This has happened four times now.
    1) First time (late June), I was watching a video on the net, mbp plugged in at wall, at least 80-100% charged. Went to connect my iphone via usb, got as far as plugging the usb (unattached to iphone) and it went off immediately. No response as above to anything. Took it to the Apple store the next day, no response to being plugged in there so they theorised that it was the logic board and took it in overnight. The next day I get a phone call from one of the techies backstage saying he'd gone to plug it in and after about 20 mins it began to charge up fine, albeit completely drained of battery. He said he'd done a hardware test etc and everything appeared fine. So I went to get pick it up, they replaced the magsafe saying that must have been the source.
    2) Less than a week later, it happens again, this time nothing attached to the usb, and as far as I know before it shut off, charged/charging in wall. No response for at least a day at home of me trying it in various power outlets etc. Just dead to the world. I take it to the genius bar the next day, they plug it in with one of their chargers and it lights up immediately, once again saying it'd been fully drained of power. Again they do a hardware test in front of me, show me everything is fine. This time they replace the plug end of my charger and send me off.
    3) Two weeks later (last Monday 9th), I go in to my room and find it on my desk dead to the world. Plugged in, this time in a different house (so no chance of faulty wiring in walls of first). I can see a dim flickering light in magsafe but not enough to charge it, it seems. Won't respond to my attempts to turn on nor plug in around the house. On Thursday its still unresponsive, so I travel 2 hours on the train to my nearest Apple store, only for it to light up soon as they plug it in at the bar, and once again 0% battery. Guy tells me that it'll be my SMC 'getting confused' because I don't shut it down enough (I mostly let it sleep). He says it starts working again after 2 days because the SMC must be resetting itself somehow in its hibernation (?????). I take it home, start making a conscious effort to shut it down once or twice a day when I know I won't be using it. I also installed the recent OS and firmware updates.
    4) Saturday night (tonight 14th). On the internet in bed with phone plugged in via USB, I unplug phone on phone end and it happens again. I can't turn it on, dim green flickering in magsafe, no lights on side of mac.
I honestly can't afford the money nor the time to keep travelling to Exeter only for it to charge soon as I put it down (magic touch of the apple store circuitry/staff I guess).
I can't reset the SMC as it won't turn on either way - I've tried this every time its happened, under the direction of applecare phone support and it doesn't do anything for a dead machine. Along with all the other keyboard combos they suggest. The only thing that 'cures' it is 2 or 3 days of being completely unresponsive, and then spontaneously deciding to charge like nothings happened beyond a battery drain, usually in the store.
What can I do? Whenever I go to the Apple store it works fine and I look like an idiot, plus they checked the hardware (incl the logic board) the first time. Could they have missed something? I spent so much money on this thing, I almost feel like I've been given a dud and they don't believe me enough to replace it.
    TIA,
    Thomasyn

You've documented your symptoms pretty well - put it in a document and present it to the Apple Store 'genius'. I would  insist on a logic board replacement and a battery replacement. I feel as if you have a dud as well (the hard drive dying so soon, the problems you're describing, etc.). Apple will have a log of your AppleCare calls so make them frequently.
Before going back to the store, call AppleCare again with your symptoms so that they can document them. Let them make your appointment at the Apple Store.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • BB 9930 Bluetooth Pairing Issues with 2011 Prius

I'm having a bluetooth pairing problem with my Blackberry 9930 staying connected to my 2011 Toyota Prius.  It pairs fine and then some time later it will dial randomly or disconnect or freeze up.  Toyota says it is a common problem with the new Verizon Blackberry phones.  Went to the Blackberry forum and there are plenty of posts where the same problem is occuring on a variety of late model autos with the 9930 and no response from RIM.
Is there a patch out there to address this issue??  Is Verizon addressing this issue with RIM??
    Thank you,
    Richard

I have the same problem with my 2011 GMC Yukon Denali (great truck BTW).  I go to make a call and it dials out and connects with the end user but I can't hear them and they can't hear me.  I manually turn off the bluetooth connection on my phone wait for the disconnected from Yukon message and then turn it back on.  Once I get the connected to Yukon message, I can place the call and it works fine.  Then randomly, it'll stop again and I'll go through the same procedure.  It's a pain in the neck (or other body parts)!
When will Verizon (RIM) have a fix out for this?  I've seen it in quite a few posts on the Internet so this problem seems pretty widespread.
    Thanks

  • Apple wireless keyboard a1134 issues w 2011 mbp

I'm having serious issues with the A1134 keyboard from Apple.  I use my macbook pro both at home and at work in clamshell mode, that is with the lid closed, power connected, and an external monitor on mini display port.  I use the Apple Bluetooth keyboard A1134, and the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad.  The computer ALWAYS pairs just fine with the mouse and track pad, but it seems like almost every day now my computer refuses to immediately pair with the keyboard.
It's very frustrating, and I'm not sure how to fix it.  The problems seem to have happened when I wanted to "play" with my keyboard and see if it would pair to my iphone and some other devices, which it did quite nicely (i paired both my home and work one to it at some point).   Even though I've since gone and removed it from my iphone and turned bluetooth off on the phone, the pairing with my laptop seems to be a constant battle.
Does any one have any suggestions on how I can completely delete all previous pairings from the keyboard itself?  It has to be storing the pairing information in some ROM chip on the keyboard, so it would be nice to factory reset the keyboard somehow so i can start over.
Also, do you think since I have a keyboard and mouse paired at work and another set at home my system might be getting confused with all these devices paired up to it?  It's so frustrating and has really been ruining my awesome Mac experience that I love so much.

    Hello:
You do not indicate what level of OS X you are now operating (your profile needs updating).
There are a couple of things I can suggest, but I need to know where you are first.

  • MBP 2012 (not retina) replace HD with 2011 MBP SSD?

I have an early 2011 MBP 13in with an Intel SSD running Lion. Wonderful computer. SSD runs like a champ. However, I just bought the 2012 15in (NOT RETINA) MBP, and I want to replace the HD in the 2012 MBP with the SSD from my 2011 MBP. Can I remove the HD from the 2012 MBP, put the SSD from the 2011 MBP into the new 2012 MBP and it will simply work? If it's not quite that simple, what steps must I take to get the SSD from the 2011 MBP working in the 2012 (NOT RETINA) MBP?
(Oh, and for those that are curious...I am not interested in the retina MBP because the RAM and SSD are soldered into the board. No thanks.)

and as most unbelievable things its not true, you can still replace the SSD on both the retina and non retina macbooks. Ram in the only thing you cant replace because of it being soldered (on the retina only).
The ssd in the retina is proprietary so we have to wait for someone to release a compatable module, but it does infact unscrew and come out.
The non-retina macbooks should be as upgradable (hdd and ram wise) as much as the 2011 edition.

Mine too. Get a inferno hot, and i cant use Firefox anymore, because the fans stars in less than one minute.

  • Graphical issues with 2011 iMac and Lion

I have a 2011 27" iMac (core i7 and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB) with 2 external displays, most of the graphical issues are present in the external displays but the menu bar, dock and volume popup all appeared distorted on the main display.
On the external display most apps look like this http://i.imgur.com/FQ0AJ.png
there are a few exceptions like steam, safari and itunes, these apps don't show any distortion apart from when being switched the the other displays though, almost all other apps apear disdorted (as shown in the image) on the external displays.
I never had these issues with Snow Leopard but as far as I can tell its some kind of graphics driver problem, don't know how this wasn't spotted in the beta..

I called apple care and informed them + I recorded a video of it happening with ScreenFlow and sent it to apple. Please call apple care and inform them so they escalate this issue.
When I called them they sent me a file to Capture the Data of my computer to see what happened and what caused it.
By the way this computer should be able to connect with 6 screens simultaneously.
Please if you are experiencing this issue write here to inform apple about and call apple care or see the genius bar.

  • Optical audio out issue on 2011 MBP

I just tried to hook up my month old 15" MacBook Pro to my home theater using an optical cable for audio and the laser is really weak, so the receiver will not recognize the signal.
It is visibly dimmer than the signal from my AirPort Express. Amusingly, the AirPort's signal was strong enough that I was able to get the receiver to use it through its cable AND the one I am trying to use with the MBP by just holding them end to end. Any one have a similar problem?
I'm thinking I'll have to take it in to the Apple Store. This unit also doesn't play nice with my monitor with MDP to DVI adapter. *harrumph*

I discovered a handy little piece of freeware called soundflower. I'm not entirely certain how it works, but my understanding is that it sets itself up as an output that is not optical, and then forwards all of the audio data to the optical port. It allows you to control the system volume because the system does not recognize it as an optical port. As for quality, I haven't noticed any decrease yet, but I'm definitely going to keep my ears open as it is kind of a funky setup. Also, the system volume does not have the full spectrum of 'quiet–>loud' that it normally has, but you do have some control.
Anyway, here's a link with instructions on how to set it up properly, and where to find the software.

  • SSD Raid 0 With 2011 MBP

I have a late 2011 15" MBP with 2x Intel SSD x25-M 160gb drives (1 in the main bay, 1 in the optical bay). I chose these drives due to the limited bandwidth in the optical bay (it's restricted to 3g vs the main bays 6g).
I have found an issue that is rather curious when trying to install OSX onto the machine and it concerns the disk utility:
OS X Recovery Disk Assistant created with Mavericks will NOT see either SSD installed in either bay using the disk assistant (no format or parition possible of either drive.  I can place the drives in external cases and they work flawlessly i.e. you can partition each drive but when you put the partitioned drives back in the MBP Mavericks will not see them).
OS X Recovery Disk Assistant created with Lion will see BOTH drives and will configure raid 0 successfully (once installed I ran the Mavericks install and it did not see the drive with Lion Installed on it so no upgrade was possible - I ran the internet download as well as trying to install Mavericks from an external firewire drive using a previous download of OSX 10.9).
I am about to try installing Mountain Lion to see if it will detect the SSD raid drive (it's downloading now).  If that works I will try to then upgrade to Mavericks (doing this incrementally kinda *****).
I'm wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem?  I have seen plenty of YouTube videos of people putting two SSDs in their MBPs and running Raid 0 with plenty of success.  I'm just wondering if maybe there's a brick wall with anything other than a 13" MBP?
    Thanks in advance.

Kappy - I think you missed part of the information in my last post:
I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY created and installed OSX (Snow Leopard, Lion, & Moutain Lion) using the Disk Utility provided by Apple to install fresh versions of each and they work perfectly.
I DID NOT clone these from external drives.
I would like to install Mavericks (I don't care at this point about the raid config but it would be nice) but the disk utility version of Mavericks (that you need to install that specific OS) will not see the SSDs installed inside the MBP.  Even if I install Mountain Lion on a single drive and then try to upgrade to Mavericks the drives are not seen.
Even if i could clone the Mavericks install from an external drive onto the internal raid I still can't see either drive to even do it.

  • Few issues with my MBP screen (warranty related?)

    Hi all,
I have been putting this problem off for the past year now, but it's getting to me more and more. My MacBook Pro is still under warranty (MBP is a 2007 model just before the newer ones came out), and I have a few niggles with the display.
First off I have a dead pixel near the top, where the address bar usually is for Safari/Chrome. This one is shown in the tab to make it apparent. (http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/4168/img0278q.jpg)
Next is a dash of light to the far right of the screen about just under a quarter of the way up from the screen. (http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6196/img0279d.jpg)
And finally I have something that looks like a hair has embedded under the screen and this is the most distracting part. I have included links to pictures of what I am referring to. (http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2763/img0277ix.jpg) (http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2985/img0276m.jpg)
My question is will any of these be enough to warrant use of my warranty (AppleCare)? I do graphic design and the hair like thing is the worst because it's consistently viewable. Thanks for any help.
Message was edited by: Shady Pioneer

You definitely need to ask about this before your warranty is up. The hair seems to be the worst thing. I believe that displays are supposed to be manufactured in clean room conditions and sealed. There should not be a hair under the display. The light dash could represent a break in the seal but I don't know if it does or not.
The only way to find out is to ask, and emphasize that you do graphic design. I have heard of people getting replacement displays for similar issues.
    Good luck!

  • Brand new to Mac and having some issues with my MBP mid 2012

I am hoping someone can offer some advice to me, I am about ready to tear my hair out. I bought a mid 2012 MBP from best buy open box for $2000, it is the model with the 750gig hard drive and 8 gigs of ram. I has Mountain Lion on it and I have done all the software upgrades. I do not have a lot of software installed on it but it does not seem to be running right. I have had it about  three weeks or a month and it appeared to be running okay most of the time.
I tried putting parallels 8 on it so I could run some of my windows apps and I installed windows 8 and nothing else and it brought the laptop to a stand still it was crawling so slow I unistalled the software. The past few days I have noticed that when I open the lid and it wakes from sleep the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive for upto a minute.
However today has been the worse by far. I am trying to copy some files about 300 gigs worth from a external drive to my hard drive so I can reformat the drive and while it is copying I am not able to do anything, surf the web, use word or anything because anything I try to do locks the computer up for several minutes or I have to force quit. The voice dictation feature no longer works when I press fn twice, nothing happens at all.
Is this normal, I mean I am very disappointed that a $2000 computer cant copy some files and surf the internet or type a word doc at the same time. Do I have a bad mac or am I expecting to much????? I am a therapist and use this laptop to take and store all my client notes I bought a mac because I need something dependable and reliable.
If this is not normal what do you suggest?

That would be your best bet. There is a reason someone returned it. Most people that buy a Mac, except me, never return them. Even if they don't run right. So for someone to return that unit they either didn't care for Mac OS X (that is why I return the first 2 I had) or there was something very wrong with it.
    scampbell70 wrote:
That is what I am thinking as well Shootist007. I am a best buy silver reward member and I have 60 days instead of 30 on all returns and I am thinking I may return it, pay the extra $200 and get a brand new one.

  • Graphics issue on 2011 MBP

I'm not sure what is going on, but in Windows 7 I've gotten a blue screen and crashed twice and the graphics have scrambled once and caused the computer to shut down. In OS X, it has been stuttering on video and frozen once as well, allowing me to move the mouse but not select anything?
