Issues with dropping frames

Hi,
I have a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 iMac with a 2GB AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics card and 20GB of DDR3 RAM.
FCPX has been working fine up until now, but suddenly has started dropping frames.
FCPX 10.0.5 btw
For extra info my iMac crashed last night because I was rendering out of After Effects and completely ran out of memory. I now have 40% free space and have reset the parameter random access memory (PRAM) and nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM). Still the problem persists.
Footage is not proxy and is being pulled from my Mac hard drive.
Any ideas?

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.4.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive - otherwise it will run slowly.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Reader causing issues with dropped underscores in courier new font

When converting a microsoft word document in 2013 or 2007 to a PDF is causing issues with dropped underscores.  It only seems to happen in courier new.  For instance if I have _someCode, when converting this over to a PDF file I will sometimes see _someCode and sometimes I will see someCode.  If I open this file in a different pdf reader then it looks correct 100% of the time.  If I copy and paste into another application then the underscore shows.  This is a major issue for people putting code into a PDF document as underscores are important and courier new is what we often use.

I love how quick you are to throw Microsoft under the bus.  Often it is their fault.  In this case I believe you are 100% wrong and absolutely short sighted to ignore this.  As I said in my original email, which you apparently missed, I have tried this in multiple PDF viewers and Adobe Reader is the ONLY reader that misses the underscores.  Foxit, PDF Exchange and Sumatra all render it perfectly.  Adobe reader missed 6 underscores in my document that has 18 underscores.  30% of the time in this document Adobe Reader makes the underscore invisible.  And if I switch the zoom to 100% instead of 148% (which is the default for me for some reason) then Adobe Reader misses 7 of them.  This doesnt occur in the other readers.  Blame Microsoft all you want but the simple fact is that Adobe Reader has issues reading courier new's underscores.  It needs to be fixed.

  • Problems with dropped frames in FCP 4.5 Log & Capture

Thanks for the advice on my previous post regarding sound problems - those are now sorted, but I am having problems with dropped frames in Log and Capture. I am using FCP 4.5 with OS X 10.4.10 on a Powermac G4. CPU 867 mhz dual processor. L2 Cache 256 kb, L3 cache 1 mb. Memory 1g. Bus speed 133hz. I am capturing from a Canon XM1 via Firewire. The scratch disk is a 500gb Seagate FreeAgent USB 2.0, 7200rpm.
Basically, the video and audio are fine while playing back in Log and Capture and I can control the device, but any attempt to capture, whether Capture Now or Clip result in a very jerky picture and aborts with dropped frames after a few seconds. The sound is ok for the few seconds before it aborts. There do not appear to be any problems with the timecode.
My capture preset is DV Pal 48hz.
Any advice or pointers gratefully received.
    Thanks, Ally

Well quite. I have just tried it in the internal hard drive and it works fine now. I am going to have to capture everything to my small hard drive and move it across to the external. Then, when I have finished I am going to bang my head against the wall and buy an external HDD with Firewire.
    Thanks,
    Ally

Looking at the Yosemite forum, it is obvious that this is a very common issue.  You might want to post in that forum for help and advice.

  • Jerky playback with dropping frames after iPod/iPhone Conversion

    Hi!
I have a problem converting quicktime hd material to iPod/iPhone H.264. I know that there are iPhone Trailers available on the Apple Movie Trailer Page, but lets take a trailer as an example video source, because they are free to use and are leading to the "dropping frames" problem.
    Source video data:
    H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    23.976 fps
    5755 Kbps (VBR)
    1280x720 (16:9) / Progressive
    Converted video data:
    H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    23.976 fps
    1472 Kbps (VBR)
    640x360 (16:9) / Progressive
While the source video playback is smooth in quicktime, the converted video drops frames and the playback is very jerky.
The problem occurs with every single trailer i tried (e.g. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button).
I also tried to convert the material with visualhub (ffmpeg/vlc) - same result.
Has anyone ideas how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

The issue could very easily be insufficient hard drives.  You really should have a minimum of three internal drives for editing.  A single 5400 RPM drive is bound to cause lags.

  • Playback Issues Repeated/Dropped Frame?

I have a hackintosh with Adobe CS6 Production Premium installed. On Premiere Pro when editing footage every so often I have a repeated frame/dropped frame. I don't think its really called a dropped frame because I have the drop frame indicator and it shows no signs at all (green throughout the timeline). When playing back the footage/clip it looks as though there is a duplicated frame then continues to play as normal. If I have a 5min sequence it will do this once every 20-30 secs. When exported everything is fine so can only be a problem during playback within Premiere. Has anyone come across this problem before? If there is a fix or would the upgrade just fix this problem? Any help would be appreciated.
    Specs:
    Ppro 6.0.0
GPU: Nvidia GTX 680 cuda enabled
    CPU: core i7
    Mac OSX 10.8.3
    Footage: ProRes 422 1920x1080 25p

If it doesn't show up in the export, it's a pretty minor issue safely ignored.

  • Dealing with dropped frames and out of sync audio

    Hi!
I'm using Final Cut Studio 3 and I'm trying to record some video from a pretty old MiniDV-camera. The problem is that a have some dropped frames and when I record the whole thing it gets out of sync.
By default Final Cut aborts the capture (without saving) when it finds dropped frames. That won't work for me. I start recording, it records a couple of minutes and then it just aborts without saving anything.
I tried to record the entire tape when using the option of not aborting on dropped frames. I recorded the entire video but not it gets more and more out of sync later and later in the video.
So, do you have any suggestions on how to deal with this? Maybe I can use an external application for this cause I haven't found a way to deal with this in Final cut.
    Best
    Felix

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Did you shoot in DV or HDV ?
Did you try to capture HDV with Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (or 50 for europe)?
Does you downconvert HDV shooted to DV upon capturing from camcorder ?
DV-NTSC 48 kHz is the way to go with downconverted material.
Does your DV audio setting is 16 bit on FX1 ? (HDV is a fixed one).

  • Help needed with drop frames

    Hello everyone,
A few weeks ago with the help of some of the participant on this panel I change my settings and move my scratch disk from my internal HD to the external one.
Since then it seems that I have a lot of drop frames on the video as well as on the audio: and it seems that the problem is worsening.
Any suggestion to try to remedy to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you very much.
    Guy.

I guess I have a problem with my external drive (LaCie 250 GB). I was working this afternoon and I noticed that I had a lot of dropped frames in a clip in the viewer and when replaying the same clip the drop frames were not at the same place.
So my question is : what's a good external drive?
This one is about 2Yrs old . Is that an average life time for this kind of material ? or was I unlucky?
Any suggestion on what I should do or try would be gretly appreciated.

  • Spry horizontal menu - IE6 issue with drop downs not displaying correctly

    Hello everyone,
I have an IE6 display issue with a spry horizontal menu on a website I recently developed and hope someone can help me sort it out.
You can see the live site here: www.callumstrust.org
This is a site for a new charity so obviously I'm very keen to get it sorted out as soon as I can. The easiest way to view the problem is to either view it in IE6, or view it IE8, turn on the Developer Tools and change the Document Mode to 'Quirks mode'. you'll immediately see that the sub-menus on the header menu display permanently as a full width list, and not as a drop down menu as they should.
I think the problem lies with the 'width' being set to 'auto' in the ul.MenuBarHorizontal li style. However, I can't seem to get the style right to display the menu on a single line with enough space for text of all the menu items.
Can anyone advise on how to sort this out? I've not posted any code here: let me know if you need this and I'll happily post it.
    Many thanks,
    chris.

  • What's the deal with Drop-Frame / Non-Drop-Frame Timecode?

    I'm having trouble with 30fps Drop-Frame and 30fps Non-Drop-Frame timecode formats! I thought 29.97fps means 30fps Drop-Frame, but now I'm all confused.
I'm working with DSLR footage filmed with a frame rate of 29.97. For example, this one clip is listed as (in Project panel)
    Media Start: 11:16:11:23
    Media End: 11:22:42:22
    Duration: 00:06:31:00
    Frame Rate: 29.97fps
If I open this clip directly in Source Monitor, the timecode display (yellow, on lower left corner) says 11:16:11:23 at the beginning and 11:22:42:23 at the end. OK. But if I right-click on the timecode display, the pop-up indicates "Non-Drop-Frame"(!!). If I manually change that to "Drop-Frame", the start and end timecode would become 11:16:52:11 and 11:23:23:23, and the duration display (white, on lower right corner) becomes 6:31:12.
Now I create a new sequence of 1080p30, which has a 29.97fps time base. I right-click the yellow timecode display on the upper left corner of the Timeline, it says "30fps Drop-Frame". I drag the said clip onto the sequence. It occupies a length of 6:31:12. If I double-click the clip to open it in Source Monitor, now the Source Monitor timecode display indicates "Drop-Frame", and the start/end timecodes are 11:16:52:11 and 11:23:23:23. Huh??
Now I apply the "Timecode" effect on the clip. The timecode burn-in says 11:16:51:11 at the first frame and 11:23:23:22 at the last frame. I then go to the Effect Controls tab and look at the Timecode effect. It says
    Format: SMPTE
    Timecode Source: Media
    Time Display: 30 Drop Frame
Just playing around, I switch "Timecode Source" to "Clip" - now the timecode burn-in goes from 00:00:00:00 to 00:06:31:11 - and then I switch it back to "Media". Now the Effect Controls tab says:
    Format: SMPTE
    Timecode Source: Media
    Time Display: 30 Non-Drop Frame
And the timecode burn-in says 11:16:11:23 at the first frame and 11:22:42:22 at the last frame!
    HUH??
Just for kickers, I switch "Timecode Source" to "Clip" again... Now "Time Display" stays on "30 Non-Drop Frame", and the timecode burn-in goes from 00:00:00:00 to 00:06:30:29.
What's the REAL length of this clip? Is it drop-frame or non-drop-frame? What are the REAL timecodes for it?
Also in a general sense, since I can change the "Time Display" field in the Timecode effect at any time, and change the Timecode display format of the Timeline at any time... How do I avoid creating mismatching timecodes??
Thanks in advance for any clarification!!

So obviously, only one of them could be "correct" in terms of reflecting what actually happened. The other one is slightly sped-up or slowed-down. You might say "oh that's a tiny difference, it doesn't matter".
Zooropa75, just for matter of clarification I want to make sure you understand that no matter which you use, it won't actually speed up or slow down your video. TC, wether it is non-drop or drop, is only a counting system. For that reason, it doesn't even matter which you use to reference edits, so long as everyone editing uses the same TC basis.
If you want actual time accurate TC, as was already mentioned, use drop-frame.
I'm going to kill two birds here. The "drag clip to new sequence button" action I was referring to in my earlier post is dragging your clip to the icon seen below. It should create a timeline using your videos format.
Also, remember I recommended looking in the manuel for "actual" time used? You can see below a snapshot I took from your cameras manuel. You're not shooting in whole numbers for anything unless you're using the 50hz system and shooting at 50p. That is the ONLY exception. ...and this is good for everyone to remember. Very few US digital cameras shoot frames per second in whole numbers. If it says you're shooting in 24p, 30p, 60p, etc. ad nauseum, you can bet your biscuits it's actually the multi-decimal NTCS counterparts like you see below And that should be your final answer. *chuckle*

  • Major problems with dropped frames while trying to capture

Are there any settings where you can change the sensitivity of FCP HD or any settings that I am not aware of?
Trying to capture from DigiBeta through a Sony J30 SDI, the whole thing wount go for a minute without intruption and dropped frames.
I have tryed several tapes and finally I tried to copy through FireWire on to MiniDV on my XL1on a new unused DV-tape and then from there on capture into FCP but the problem remains.
I have had some minor problems with this earlier but never as severe.
I am capturing onto a Lacie BigDisc hooked up through Firewire 800 and there ia 170 GB free so thet should not be a problem.

    Andreas,
The J30 specs state "All standard definition, half-inch Betacam format tapes, dating back some twenty years, can now easily be converted to a 25 Mbps DV signal and transferred to a compatible DV device via a single digital interface cable.", but you say you've tried that, and from the specs I'm assuming you'd need some conversion from the deck to go straight into FCP...like a Canopus or like you did dropping to DV tape.
Have you tried a different FW port and/or cable?
Other posts have mentioned changes of FW cables or ports as a solution, so I'm inclined to agree with David that you may require a FW800 card...we purchased one, when we bought our Big Disk Extreme. However, I don't capture to it, only archives and storage.
Are you trying to capture internally to your system drive? (I'd guess not, as I've read some of your posts and would be surprised if you were)
Any recent upgrades/updates or other changes in your config?

  • Multicam with dropped frames

    Hi,
I have a few clips with some dropped frames that I need to sync for multicam, but
    I cannot recapture the footage.
The only thing I can do is export a 'repaired clip' and sync that.
I have marked the 'long frames'
Can anybody tell me how to 'repair' the clips so that when I export the 'repaired' clip and reimport them, they will stay in sync? (hope i've made sense)

I just finished a multicam project which had a ton of dropped frames over 8 cameras, and I didn't set it to start a new clip on dropped frames. It was a live concert.
What I did was, once I got the audio mix from the band, I laid it out on the timeline and locked those tracks. Then I dropped the first camera onto it, synced it up at the beginning, and hit play. When I saw a dropped frame, I sliced the video track and slid it down the timeline until the remaining footage was in sync. I inserted color bars instead of the slugs Randy recommended. That way it's easier to see in the multiclip 9-up view when a dropped frame area comes up, and I knew not to use that angle. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Once I went all the way through an angle, I would export a new self-contained QT movie of that angle and import it into the project. Then I'd duplicate that sequence, remove the video, and bring in the next camera. Shampoo rinse repeat.
Once I had all the angles done, I created a mutliclip with all my new clips. By locking the audio and duplicating those clips, each new QT movie had the same timecode, and I was able to sync by timecode, instead of in point on my multiclip.

  • Bad Problem with Dropped Frames

I'm running FCP 6 on my 2GHz Intel Core Duo Macbook. I've got IGB 667 MHZ RAM.
I hadn't been having problems all day when all of the sudden, BAM, every 1 or two seconds I get the Dropped Frames error.
This happens when I am editing MPEG4 video. I get the dropped frames both with and without audio. There are no other sequences or programs open.
Would this problem arise from taking multiple shots from a single clip?
It's getting pretty bad guys, so any ideas are welcome.
    thanks.

OK, i think i've figured out what the problem may be. When i added an MPEG 4 clip to the sequence in question, a window popped up asking me if I would like to change my timeline settings to match the clip. I said yes. Whatever was changed by this is what is causing the problem.
What would this have changed and how can i change it back?

  • Cs6 issue with still frame duration setting not working, possibly yosemite problem

Hi, I moved my project over to my iMac, which I updated to Yosemite awhile back. Suddenly the frame duration for stills setting defaults to 5 even though it is set at 2 for my animation project. What gives?
I just bought my master collection two years ago and spent a pretty penny. There were updates for the Mavericks update but none for Yosemite? I think there need to be and people spend too much money on these products for the support option to be so skimpy.
Hopefully someone answers this issue with a solution. Otherwise, I will not speak highly of Adobe.

As suggested by someone on a different forum, I tried downgrading the firmware to 7.6.1. By doing so, the problems disappeared and WPA2 only mode works correctly. I will file a bug report with Apple.

  • Privileges/permissions issue with drop box/archive folder

    Hi there,
I'm having an issue with the permissions on a folder on my iMac. I'm running Leopard. Here at our office, I have my computer set up just like everyone else; within my drop box I have an folder titled "Archive", and within the archive folder I have a folder named after the boss' external hard drive. When the files are on her hard drive, she moves them into this folder so that we know they're completed and can be burned to disc.
For some reason though, she can no longer access this folder in my drop to drag anything into it. One day I found something online that told me to set something through my system preferences. It worked, but I can't remember what I did! The folder seems to have "relapsed" and once again, she can't access it. "Get Info" doesn't work, no matter how many times I change the permissions- it always says everyone should be able to read and write. I've also tried changing permissions and shared folders in the "Sharing" section of system preferences. It just doesn't seem to want to go. I think she might be running Tiger; is there a possibility that that's the issue?
Any thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would check the system preferences / sharing / file sharing .. highlight file sharing (leftside) and setting to edit changes will be on right side for 10.6.x S Leopard. I would look for a somewhat similar setup in Tiger for its file sharing settings.
