Issues with Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J

I have a (pre Intel) 20" screen iMac (PPC) with isight. My OS is 10.5.8. I purchased the computer in 2006 and it came with the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J super drive. I used it frequently but not excessively, and 3 years later it quit burning. I took it to an Apple certified repair center  in 2009 and they installed a new one (same type). I have used it  some over the past years and now it is not working. I have read the old articles (301551 and 25402) on optical and disc drive burning and write speeds and have tried all of their suggestions, including different speeds and nothing seems to work. I have tried both TDK and Memorex 80min. 52X discs. Here is what happens: I put in the disc, then go to burn the disc. I see a gray bar that says Preparing Disc...I see the songs above the bar as they load up. Then the bar says "Burning disc- initializing"..candy stripe bar and then gray bar...this seems to go quickly...then I see burning disc - finishing with a solid gray bar..the finishing does not last long and then the disc ejects.
Then I see a message that says" the attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry".  What are the problems with this Super Drive?!!!!! Perhaps, I need to get an external burner. I have checked to see what the Apple Store offers and found a LaCie. Do any of you have the LaCie 22xd2DVD+RW with LightScribe external burner? Is it working for you?
Do you have any suggestions for another type of external burner? DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR FIXING MY MATSHITA, before I spend a hundred bucks.

I find if I write on a CD, DVD with a CD/DVD Marker Pen the iMac will not

It tells all about the disc, and the disc isn't mounted on my desktop though ?
I've read where this is a major issue and some said to go out and buy a

  • MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J Problem, help appreciated

I have been trying to burn an I Movie through I DVD on the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J. The program seems to work correctly until right at the last minute. The burning process gets to Multiplexing and burning and suddenly the disc ejects and says done. The disc when reinserted still is blank. I am fairly new at this and was wondering if I am doing something wrong or is their a problem with my drive? Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I too am having a similar problem. Whenever I burn a Memorex DVD-R through my drive, SimplyBurns stops the operation immediately, saying "disc not writable." I read somewhere that resetting PRAM fixes some problems; that didn't work. Furthermore, here is what System Profiler reports:

No. You have no alternative but to plug it into a computer running iTunes and restore it.

  • Is there a firmware update for burning at 16x with Matshita DVD-R UJ 845E?

Is there a firmware update for burning at 16x with Matshita DVD-R UJ 845E? I'm trying to burn a DVD using iDVD on my iBook. The blank DVD's are Memorex 16x (I've used Memorex 8x successfully in the past), the DVD drive is specified above. The finder tells me that the drive has reported an error "sense key=medium error/ sense code=0x73, 0x03" I couldn't find firmware updates in either Panasonic Matshita or Apple websites. Am I forever confined to 8x DVD-R's with this laptop?

    First, welcome to the discussions.
Sorry, No Firmware update to allow you to burn at 16X.
The drive you have is only capable of burning at 8X.
You will also find that for the most part when you recieve errors that it is more often than not attributed to MEDIA.
There are so many problems with the cheaper media they are to numerous to cover.
DVD is not at all like CD burning, in that the technology as well as the Optical Drives used, seem to be touchy, and require the use of good Media. This will allow you trouble free burning without errors.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
You will also find that the reason that DVD-R Media works the best, is because it is the most wirely used and recognised in both Computers and Players.
If I may suggest. There are several 16X DVD's on the market.
Take your time and look at the back of the Jewel Cases and read. You will see that the better Media will tell you that it will burn at 1X through and including 16X, if your drive is capable of handleing these speeds. I prefer Maxell 16X DVD-R Media in the individual Jewel Cases. This Media burns at the slower speeds on the older Superdrives that will only burn at 1X or 2X.
Like many others I have learned my lessons the hard way.
    Cheers Don

  • Slow burn with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E

Burning of 3.54 GB took over 12 minutes with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E. Finder allows me to burn with 8X but still the actual speed is far from it. This is extremely disappointing. New firmware is needed or similar.

I have a power book 17 inch and cannot burn either, i get all kinds of window messages, too many to mention. one of the messages i do get sais i have not got the space on my start up disk ( there 2 gig left) but my file of 3.6 gig is on another partition.(with many gigs to spare) what doas my start up disk have to do with this i wonder. if i buy a third party burner its not going to ramble on about my start up disk is it?
Help me please how do i burn a DVD
My drive info says CDR-RW and DVD-RW
are these the disks i have open as options, this info is from the sytstem profiler. can i not use a DVD-R, why not?????
the answer to some of your question is use a DVD- MINUS not +PLUS
As for me help someone. isnt there anyone from apple who can give us some ideas about this.

  • MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J

    Dear Readers,
I have 1 year old MacBook Pro, I rarely use the optical drive. Now that i want to burn a CD, DVD or DL DVD using Roxio Titanium 9 i get errors.
    One of those errors was:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
After that i get a "The disc failed to be written" message.
I tried Imation & Sony media still i got the same error.
Is there a way to know if this is a software or hardware fault?
    Appreciate your help.

You could try Verbatim discs, they seem to be the most compatible blanks. Have you managed to successfully burn even one disc? If you haven't try repairing permissions and/or running the hardware test from your install discs. If this doesn't improve your situation call Applecare. If, however you have managed to burn some discs all Applecare will offer is the usual run through of tests. We have three machines with Matshita drives in them and all of them are so temperamental that we now use external Pioneer firewire burners. The Matshita drive on the MBP I am using now has a 90% success rate with burning cdrs with iTunes but an equal rate of failures when burning dvdrs and I've given up trying to fathom out why this is. The Pioneers have 100% success rate of burning anything we have chucked at them and we have been using them for 9 months now. There are plenty of reports on the web of the Matshita drive's performance failures, here's one recent thread.
Hopefully the use of Verbatim blanks and repairing permissions will solve your woes.

  • Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J DVD burning problems - drive going bad? replacement?

I purchased a couple spindles of TDK DVD+R DL discs from Newegg last week; got them yesterday and stuck one in my iMac to start burning some of this stuff I've got backed up (using Toast 10), and ran into a problem... it failed almost immediately with a "medium error."
I tried Disk Utility and it quit in a similar fashion on several discs, never actually burning anything to them.
I've stuck with TDK in the past because they seemed to be the most compatible, but now I was thinking that maybe they changed something in the manufacturing process that caused them to not work anymore.
Fortunately, I have access to a pretty new MacBook and tried using the discs in there, and they worked just fine with the same data and the same version of Toast.
About an hour ago, I pulled out a stack of TDK single-layer DVDs I bought a few months ago (and that worked with no issues in my iMac at that time), and slipped one into my iMac to burn a smaller set of files, and it failed in exactly the same way as the DL discs did yesterday.
Since then, I've been searching everywhere for information on this (including firmware updates and a place to buy a replacement drive) and found very little.
What I did find suggests that the drive might be going bad (or at the very least choked with dust).
I can't find anything solid on what drive I could buy to replace it myself, though.
And I'm not very optimistic about taking it to the Genius Bar, as I don't have AppleCare and it sounds like they would just put in an equally failure-prone Matshita drive that'll be dead within a year.
I'll try cleaning it as soon as I can locate one of those brush discs and see if that helps.
I've also noticed that it will occasionally stop mounting discs until after a restart.

I have a 24" iMac, Approx 2 Years Old, Mine was having the same problems as yours, I had Memorex DL DVD + R and half the time it would spit them back out and the other half it would fail at 50%, when before it would read and write fine. So I figured it was hardware when i was having the same problem on the boot camp side. So two days ago I took it in to the apple store in plano, they looked at it, said they'd put a new drive in, And it was free thanks to the apple care plan I had with it. Just picked it up a few hours ago and I just burned a DL DVD and it worked. So my suggestion is visit your apple store and maybe they'll replace it, ive heard amounts as high as $450 for replacements without the protection plan, maybe you could go firewire/usb external drive?
By the way, I can't remember what drive I had on my machine, wanna say it started with an "O", but they replaced it with a Pioneer, very quiet and seems fast.
    Good Luck

  • Issues with CD/DVD drive on Satellite A350-12D

    Hi,
I just bought my Toshiba Satellite A350-12D laptop two weeks ago, and am generally pleased with it, however I cannot get it to read data-DVD's properly.
When I try to read a data DVD that I burned on my desktop PC, the laptop starts to read but takes very, very, very long.
When I try to copy the data on the DVD to my laptop, it takes forever (I've tried once for 45 minutes and then gave up) and after a while it starts claiming it can't read most of the files on the DVD.
It's not the data on the disks that's causing problems, cause when I transfer those from my desktop to my laptop on a USB stick instead of a DVD, the files are copied immediately without a problem.
At first I figured it might be due to the DVD disks themselves (I use TDK DVD+ROM), or maybe Vista was the culprit, but I've tried the exact same disks on my friend's Medion laptop that's also running Vista and she's having no issues whatsoever.
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this or better yet, what could solve it?
    Thanks in advance!
    Eva

    > When I try to read a data DVD that I burned on my desktop PC, the laptop starts to read but takes very, very, very long.
Hmm I think this could be a problem of non-fully compatible DVDs.
My notebooks drive couldnt read or write some DVDs from different manufacturers.
I tested many disks and now Im using TDK DVD-R.
But its always different. Possibly your drive would not support this disk properly but another disk would be supported better
I think you should test it simply. There are many different disk manufacturers so dont give up buddy

  • Satellite Pro L500-12E - Issue with CD/DVD drive and display

    Hello...
I have some questions about my laptop..
    1. Is it normal that on some DVD/CD's the DVD rom it very loud and vibrates a lot, spesialy on older CD's..
2.The cover/lid of my laptop when i close it its kinda not in line with the rest of the pc it is not totaly alligned but its kinda hard to see expect when you look for it..but its properly on and its not lose or anything just not alinged to the "body" of the laptop
3.The lid again, Underneath the screen where the lid is mounted to the "body" off the laptop if.. it is not glued to the screen like the rest of the edges its just putted next to it you can drag in it so you can see the wires going into the screen etc
    is that normal?
    -thanks

1 I can imagine that CDs/DVDs are louder. Maybe are they a little bit out of shape and by spinning you can notice some vibrations. Be sure the discs are placed properly into optical disc drive.
2 It is not easy to discuss about it without some picture but I don't think it is some serious issue.
3 What you see is probably cable for WLAN antenna. WLAN antenna is placed behind the LCD.
I cannot confirm this is normal or not normal because I don't have L500 but if you want to have professional opinion visit nearest Toshiba service and show what do you mean exactly.
For me all this don't sound as some serious issues or hardware problems.

  • For those people that have a issue with MSI DVD that won't work right

I  have an MSI K9 SLI Platium 7250 w/ an AMD Athlon X2 4600+ 2.4 GHz. I have MSIDVD that originaly came with my old Motherboard MS-680E AMD Atlon XP 1700+ 1.4GHz. When I upgraded MSIDVD wouldn't work right and every time I Would insert a a DVD MSIDVD would give a wierd error. But here a hint how to bypass. As long as you have MSIDVD installed you should be able to play DVD's through Windows Media Player without any problems, thats what I was able to do. Or if you still want to use MSIDVD, you need to download a program from AMD, here are the detales, I also done this too
The Program is called "AMD Dual-Core Optimizer"
The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's
Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.
    Heres the link http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html

OK, well - I installed Tiger back on a separate disk and will reboot into that when I want to watch a movie. Cheers, all.

  • Having issues with my DVD drive...

I never used to have problems playing DVDs until recently, and why, I have no idea. I've looked up other threads on the forums and I don't quite see my problem showing up, so here it is.
Every time I insert a DVD, the drive recognizes and registers the disk, but as soon as the DVD player attempts to open, the entire system freezes. I can't eject it; I have to simply restart my computer. I thought this was just a problem with one movie, but I've tried several and I can't play them back any longer. I can't open them with any other program I have either.
I just recently updated my OS, if that helps, but I'm not really sure what's going on. Any help would be fantastic.

    Any and every?

  • Only able to detect and use DVD-R of IMATION with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E

    Hello,
Everything is in the title but basicaly, I'm able to read CD and DVD, sometimes DVD gives me some trouble but I always finish being able to read them.
I'm unable to detect Maxell dvd-r and every others brands. The only brand my dvd writer is able to read is Imation.
Someone knows how I can fix that?

Would it be possible to buy and external dvd drive that would have the capability to burn dual layer?
    Yes.
I know they have cd/dvd drives for the macbook air. But I'm wondering if I could buy it, hook it up, and it work with idvd.
That model of drive will only work on a MacBook Air. You need a third-party model; iDVD 6 and newer can burn to external drives.
