Issues with OD Home folders

Hi All,
I've been fighting with a server for over 2 days. The problem is, I'm finding it impossilbe to locate home folders in a non-standard directory (other than /User)
The silly thing is I've done it before. It was working fine. I've installed new drives to store the users home directories on.
Here's the details:
I start with a new machine with OD, AFP & DNS configured and running. I can create a home folder in the default /Users directory and access it fine. But when I try to change the location of the Users Home folder it won't work. A strange thing is that I can't delete the initial Home user location configuration (in the Users Home settings in Work Group Manager) I can open the intial config and modify it but I can't save those changes. If I select OK after making changes, it creates a new set of preferences but the initial config stays and CANNOT be removed or edited (these buttons are greyed out).
I CAN use one of these new configurations to create a Home folder which appears in the directory on the new HDs. I can also access these via AFP on a client machine and if I log in with the users details have full access to the contents of the Home folder located on the server.
When I try to log into the Home folder I get the same message stating there is a problem and informing me that the Users Home Folder is located on a AFP or SMB share.
Any ideas?????

Hi Ralph,
In the past i have never had to set the users individual home folders to Auto Mount. As you know, to do this involves the individual sharing of the Home folder it's self, rather than simply sharing the "Users" folder which contains all of the User Home folders (unless there's another way I don't know about).
I read somewhere (it's all a blur or blogs at the moment) about using Kerbos only so I changed the AFP settings to only use Kerbros Authentication (instead of the default setting "Any Method" but now I can't access the user home folders through the finder as I receive the message:
"Connection Failed
The Authentication Method required by this server can't be found"
What would cause the client to give this message. It appears the client won't use Kerbros for some reason. (NOTE I'm trialing using only OS 10.4 without applying any upgrades to see if this works, could the lack of the upgrades be causing this?)
I have a side question: Is the required Authentication method for accessing server based Home folder Kerbros?
It seems the more time I spend on this the less ground I'm making.

  • Issue with the home buton... HELP

So I just purchased my iPhone4 yesterday and here I am less than 24hrs later and there's an issue with the home button. Either the button won't work at all and I have to restart the phone, or its magically being held down and the voice control is activated and if it hears anything its automatically playing music. On top of this when I woke up it said that I needed to restore the phone and I did like four times and nothing happened. I haven't been this stressed out in forever, PLEASE help, there's a handsome reward if anyone can walk me through this issue, thanks!

  • Has anybody else been having issues with their home button after using assistive touch for a little while?

Me and my brother have been messing with Assistive Touch on and off since iOS 5 canme out. We been noticing that when we actually move to use the home button, sometimes it doesnt respond. Though I'm all for thinking my home button my be on the fritz, it wouldnt explain how mine and my brother suddenly have issues with our home buttons at the same time. Both of us had a time where the home button didnt respond at all. and its been intermittent ever since. Anybody that has an answer or another case like this I' d like some information

    Reset Home button steps:
    (1) Tap Settings App, when it is open:
    (2) Hold Power button until "slide to power off" bar appears.
    (3) Don't slide it, release power button.
    (4) Gently, continuously press Home button for few seconds until home screen appears.
    (5) Done.

  • Network accounts with local home folders

First of all sorry for my bad english.
I want to obtain network accounts with local home folders.
I have found this post very interesting to solve my problem.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2140595#2140595
Following this indications I have obtained it but I dont see the Public folder of any home folder from the network.
How I can solve this? I must share the Public folders manually? How? I have proven with SharePoints 3.5.4 and I have not obtained it.
    Thanks

    Hi
Clients should be bound to Open Directory and be using the OD Master for their DNS. Launch WorkGroup Manager and authenticate to the LDAP node. If you have only a few Users you can do it at that Level if hundreds do it at Group Level. Select Preferences > Mobility. It's fairly obvious thereafter.
After the home folder has been created you can make that account a local administrator if you wish.
This assumes the Server has been configured as Advanced. Please don't take this advice if you've used anything else.

  • Building new server with old home folders

I have a dying 10.5.5 server with OD that is in dire need of a rebuild. I am going to install 10.5.8 unlimited on a new machine and create all the same user accounts(names) in WGM, I then want to re-link all the old home folders to the new accounts.
Is this as simple as naming the new accounts identically as the old ones and then making the home folder location the same as the old?
Will I need to do anything regarding permissions on the old home folders etc??

    Hi,
I have had to do the same thing many times what with server upgrades, crashes etc and I have found the most effective way is as follows:
    1. Create the OD on the new machine and create the accounts making sure that the shortnames are the same so that the home folder names match in the new location.
2 as root user (type su - in terminal and put in the root password)use rsync in the terminal to copy the old folders to the new location eg:
rsync -av --progress [email protected]:/Volumes/userdata/homefolders/ /Volumes/userdata/homefolders/
That could take some time but it is better than using a gui as it can tend to corrupt a few things.
NOW, you will find that there are permissions issues if the user ID's have changed accross servers so I always run a little script to correct this. I will explain how to do it in the terminal in case you may be baffled by the terminal, my apologies if you already know this but it may help someone else.
open terminal and type: vi permissions.sh
you will then be in a vi editing window. Press I (thats an Eye not an Ell)to start editing and type in the following (adjust for your own environment)
    for i in /Volumes/userdata/homefolders/*
    do
    u=`echo $i | cut -d/ -f5`
    chown -R $u /Volumes/userdata/homefolders/$u
    done
Now press ESC to get out of editing mode and type : x (without the space in between, edited to remove smiley) and hit return to exit and save.
back in the terminal window type chmod 777 permissions.sh (this makes the script executable)
Now you should be ready to run the script which will effectively take the name of each folder and change the ownership of everything in said folder to the new user and rectify any permissions issues.
    type: ./permissions.sh
    You should be sorted now.
Alternatively you can try Passenger. http://macinmind.com/?pid=2&progid=1&subpid=1 which can do all of the above but I find it quicker to do it manually.
I do use passenger for bulk account creation though, admins best friend.
Hope I never lost the plot there and that it helps someone on their way

  • How to set up Open Directory Users with local home folders?

    Hi folks,
i set up a Mac mini Server with the services DNS, DHCP, AFP and OpenDirectory running. Everything is working fine so far but i want my OpenDirectory Users to have their home folders locally on the clients harddisk. My Leopard clients are already bound to the directory but everytime i try to login the login window is shaking even when i use the Directory Administrator account. What am i doing wrong?
    Thanks.

(Did you read my other reply? You need to make it a portable account for the caching of login credentials.)
With network homes and portable account enabled on a machine you always run from the locally stored homefolder on that machine.
This homefolder syncs with the server network home folder for that account.
If either of these folders get corrupt or unintentionally altered files (permission problems) somehow, there is risk of losing files, syncing problems and more (can take long time to sync at login/out, during even without corruption - I prefer gigabit cable to WiFi for this for obvious reasons).
You at least need to monitor storage space in both places. You don't want either to fill up the disk (worse on server because several users can have their folders corrupted at the same time). Working quota settings / account is probably a good thing.
And you probably need to decide what is synced : all folders or just some (and when / how often).
You either do this form the server (you decide) or let the user have some say or a mix of these two.
You might want to leave out the user's personal files (music, movies and such) and also depending on emaIl client used, maybe not sync email if the client saves it like Entourage does it, in big ever changing database files. Might be better to just backup the mailserver if IMAP based.
If a user puts other large files in their homefolder (often on the Desktop) they can fill up the server fast. DVD-projects anyone?
Mixing different versions server/client might not work too good either.
So having said that, when syncing works it can be really good and you can restore a machine/account fast with pretty recent data. You can if in a hurry even log in from another machine using the account network home folder, getting access to the synced folders/files.
Using Time Machine it's a one way "sync" (more like "duplicate changed and new files" - which I like) and you have to manually set TM settings on the client for what is going to be backed up and when. I do atleast don't know how to do it from/on the server. This "less intervention by the server" can be a good thing but if your users don't "behave" you might want to be in the drivers seat "saving them from themselves".
TM backups can grow fast and probably demands more user interaction when storage space is used up.
As with all "backup" configurations you probably want some rotating media backup of both network homes and/or TM backups so you can do a restore. Of these two, network homes are the more important one to backup "further".

  • Issues with iTunes Home Sharing using iPhone 6 Plus

    Hi guys,
I'm having problems with streaming music and video on my iPhone 6 plus from my Macbook Pro (mid 2010 model) using iTunes' Home Sharing . I am able to stream without any issues using my iPhone 4S and my Apple TV, however.
I am using iTunes version 12.0.1.26, iOS 8.1.2, and OSX 10.9.5.
Using my 6 plus, I am able to connect to my iTunes library, both music and video. Album art shows up for music but no cover art for the videos. So, all in all, I am able to see the contents of my library.
However, when I try to play songs, a couple things may happen. First, nothing plays for about 10 seconds; then a second or two of the song plays followed by silence again, appearing as if it's buffering. Second thing that may happen is that a second or two plays immediately followed by silence. If I press next to play the next song, what usually happens is that nothing plays, although the song title does appear.
As seen in this video, I don't have any issues with my WIFI connection or internet speed, as demonstrated using the iPhone 4S and Apple TV.
I have no clue as to why this is happening.
Hopefully someone could shed some light with this issue. Please feel free to comment. I'm open to and appreciate any suggestions while Apple tries to find a solution. Thanks.

    UPDATE
So, after working with the guys at Apple, they were able to provide a solution.  Now I have no problems using Home Sharing with my iPhone 6 Plus!!!
(I should add that I have the Linksys Advanced Dual-Band N Router (E2500))
The issue was fixed by giving one of the wi-fi channels a different name, thus splitting the channels into 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.  Then, I connected my iPhone to one channel (2.4 GHz) and my MacBook Pro to the other channel (5GHz).  In this configuration, I have had no issues streaming my music and video.
It seems that the problem is some kind of interference between both devices when using the same channel (i.e., when both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channel share the same name).

  • Security Issue with Network Home Directories

We are currently trying to solve an issue with some user accounts whereby students can see teacher's user files. We have x1 as authentication, x2 as elementary file share, x3 as high school and teacher file share. All are Snow Leopard Server.
    Here is the problem:
If a student is in the Finder and goes to the top menu bar and clicks Go > Network, they can see a listing of servers and computers.
When the student opens Server, the see the x1, x2, x3 servers. The continue to open folders, digging through Volumes, then the data volume and see the alias for Users. The open that folder and see all the Users.
At that point, if they click on Documents or Desktop of a teacher user, they see everything and are not prevented from accessing the files.
The permissions for the teacher user folder is:
    ACL:
Group - Everyone Deny Custom This folder
User - Administrator Allow Full Control This folder, Child folders, Child files, All descendants
    POSIX:
User - _unknown Allow Read&Write This folder
Group - _unknown Allow Read Only This folder
World - Others Allow Read Only This folder
    I would appreciate any thoughts.

Do you know where the _unknown user permissions are from?
Have the servers been upgraded from Tiger/Leopard?
Also, in your group ACL permissions what are the custom settings you have? I'm guessing you're denying access to all admin/read/write?

  • 7.6.1 has install issues with XP Home

On a clean install of XP Home, both iTunes 7.6.1 and 7.6.0.29 fail installation and show an alert that "itunesphotosupport.dll" cannot be accessed because it does not have permission. However, I'm signed in as Administrator.
I've tried downloading with both IE7 and FF, but the result is the same. Even went back to a restore point created after XP was updated and before any additional programs were installed.
Judging from the number of users who are having issues with 7.6 one has to conclude that the program was released prematurely. I'm not going to sell my Apple stock, but wish they would stop imitating Microsoft.

I would like to get an install log:
    1. Choose Run from the Start menu.
    2. Type cmd and press Return.
    A command prompt window appears.
    3. Drag the iTunesSetup.exe (make sure it is iTunes 7.6.1) file from
your desktop or downloads folder into the window.
    4. Type a space and then this text: /l*v C:\log.txt
    5. Hit Return
The iTunes installer runs and creates log.txt in your C:\ drive.
    6. Attach that log.txt file to an email back to me <[email protected]>.

  • InDesign CS1 Unexpectedly quitting with Network Home Folders

    Hi
We have a Mac OSX 10.4 Server installation running on a G5 XServe with 5 Mac Users running Network Home Folders as well as other services. When the Mac users are working off the server with their files, InDesign unexpextedly quits or when they try to save their work back to the server it reports that they don't have access gto the sharepoint to save their files.
    Any ideas?
    Paul

    Paul,
We have had similar problems with CS1 and CS2, the only fix i have found is when the user cannot save, is to use the connect to server dialogue and to reconnect to the share point that way, in most cases the user can save after doing this. I have also seen this when the user is close to their disk quotas limit (some adobe programs need something like 2/12 times the file size to be able to save properly). For some reason it seems that CS will regularly lose its connection to the server, and i checked the Adobe site once and i am sure it said it was not supported in a network environment. It is certainly the worst program we have for problems since i have set up network home folders for students, second is Microsoft Orifice which also does the same thing.
Hope this is some help, its been driving me and the students mad for the last year.
    Good luck,
    Kevin.

  • Syncing problem with network home folders

    Deaar Community,
I recently obtained a Mac Mini Server. I had a problem syncing my iPhone after moving all my data to network home folders.
Everytime I got the following message:
"Syncing cannot be enabled on this computer"
"Multiple computers are logged in to this same network home folder."
"Please turn off syncing on all other computers..."
There were no other computers syncing into the same directory.
This turned out to be a wrong error message.
I solved the problem by turing off the firewall on the server.
That was strange. Although the firewall rules were set to allow all traffic within the local zone iTunes had a problem with its presence.

Please be also sure that the permissions for the files are set correctly. In my case it turned out that the permissions for the iTunes Library were set in a way that the directories were owned by the server administrator's account. I had to reset the owner.
I also feel that there is a bug in the permissions administration in snow leopard server. I ended up with files that had a lot of permissions entries which were completely identical.
    i. e.
    Angela read only
    Steve read+write
    Steve read+write
    Steve read+write
    everyone none
Stll, a different error occurs randomly, but I finally managed to completely sync the iPhone. The error message now says that the iPhone could not be synced because the sync server could not sync the iphone. (?! This is somewhat redundant.)

  • Issues with Office Home and Business 2013 Online redeem

    Hi Guys,
I am wondering if anyone has experienced this issue:
We purchased some office licenses via local suppliers, they're medialess, and it's just an email with redeem site's URL and product key.
If i click on the Download link to redeem, it forward to Office Online website and request a Microsoft account to login. We then login use a company based microsoft account. Then what it shows is list of Office 2013 Home and Business items with "Install"
button underneath. I then started look for the one with the right product key, but none of them match the one I've been given from supplier's email.
If i use an installation media, then type in the product key, it will show Redeem Online button again, if I click on it, it ask me to login, once I logged in, it shows list of Office 2013 Home and Business with numbers in the () like (1), (2), (3)....etc.
No matter which way i use, if i continue the installation of selecting any of them in the list, I have to go through Microsoft's telephone activation. Often, we have customer's office 2013 installation corrupted and suddenly none of the office program can
be opened, and we have to uninstall / reinstall office and redo activation and etc.
I am wondering if anyone has experienced this, and whether this is something local supplier's issue or it's something Microsoft should be improving. Right now, we have to order the normal retail version with media, rather than this online version in order
to avoid drama, but for those computers which already installed with online version, we have having issue from time to time.
Any help or comment will be much appreciated!
    Thank you very much

    Hi,
Usually, you can download and activate Office with the Microsoft Account that associated with your Office 2013 Home and Business subscription on Office Online site.
