Issues with OSX snow leopard and quicktime

I recently installed snow leopard and quicktime x does not play avi files. I've tried the perian patch but it won't install on my computer. Everything goes accordingly but when I go to the perian pref panel it says not installed. I click the manual install button and nothing happens. Any ideas?

Remove the Perian prefPane from /Library/PreferencePanes/, download the latest version, and try installing it. If still no go, try VLC.

  • I have an imac an  with osx snow leopard and I can no delete mail messages, the colored disk just keep rotating around ?

How can I delete old messages in my mail app. I set it up a yr ago but I don't use it. I go directly to my mail account to retrieve my mail.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Could a 2012 macbook pro from the factory been loaded by the factory with both Snow Leopard AND OSX Lion?

could a 2012 macbook pro from the factory been loaded by the factory with both Snow Leopard AND OSX Lion?

I think MBPs stopped coming with Snow Leopard installed as of the late-2011 models. That's when OS X Lion started being pre-installed on MBPs. Some earlier MBP models (2010, early-2011) had a firmware update to allow Internet Recovery (command+option+r) which would allow a reinstall of OS X Lion (purchased from the App Store) with the purchaser's AppleID/password.
I don't believe SL would even install on a 2012 MBP.

  • How do i get a dvd with osx snow leopard to boot from since i lost mine?

Having trouble with my early 2009 intel iMac. I have reset PRAM and SRC, used disk utility in safe mode to repair disk permissions (several were found/repaired) and tried to verify disk. System said it could not verify disk because it needed to be repaired while booted from another source. I could not find my OSX Snow Leopard disk, tried to start from Leopard disk. Now the system wont go through boot process at all. the gray screen with logo and progress bar appears, but after a minute the computer shuts down. I did run the apple hardware test (start up while holding D key) and no hardware issues were found. This must be a software issue.
Is there a way I can download a copy of OSX Snow Leopard on my laptop so I can burn a disk to boot my iMac from so I can repair the disk?

You will need the Mac OS X DVD later, because it's clear that there's a problem with the hard disk. Your Mac turns off because fsck couldn't repair the hard drive, so Mac OS X can't start up. Your only option is to format the hard drive, because it's not possible to repair it.
As you have the Leopard DVD, insert it and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, choose your language and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility, choose your hard drive at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive. If it's working properly, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
If it couldn't be erased, the hard drive is damaged and you need a different one

  • Iphoto8 can work with osx snow leopard

i have a old macbook air with i photo 8, i have installed osx snow leopard last week and after this i can not see my video from my iphone in the iphoto, why?
when i drag it to desk top can play.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. When you installed Snow Leopard did you also select the option to install Quicktime Player 7. If you don't have Quicktime Player 7 installed use the SL install disk to do a custom install and install just Quicktime Player 7. Then see if you can play the videos from iPhoto.
Actually, with iPhoto 8, the videos will open outside of iPhoto when double clicked on from inside of iPhoto.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
NOTE: this is not the same as routinely backing up your entire iPhoto library folder to protect your photos. It only protects the loss of your organizational efforts that the database file contains.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Can osx mavericks server cooperate with osx snow leopard?

can I make global adress book and mail server with older osx I mean OSX Snow Leopard on mac mini with osx mavericks server?

can I use this disk to reformat my hard drive
    Yes.
As well, if I do reformat - do I have to tell my Time Machine to do something special to make a backup for reformatting? Or does it automatically make a backup that I can use to reinstall everything on my newly reformatted computer?
Restore from the Time Machine backup afterwards, either from the Utilities menu or the Migration Assistant.

So essentially, you'd have to purchase the 2.14 update from the mac store?
No. He's saying he used the serial number that came with 2.x when he bought it, and it will work with the 2.14 download.
There seems to be a catch 22: Aperture 2.1 won't work with Snow Leopard, and the 2.14 update won't work because it can't find 2.1. The work around Daniel found is to download the 2.14 trial then authorize it with the 2.1 serial number.

  • Pros and cons of having OSX Snow leopard and OSX Lion on the same Computer

Disclaimer : I am not an expert,my experience with Computers is trial and catastrophic errors.
If one owns an early Intel Mac say 2009 and want to have OSX Lion and or Snow Leopard on a partitioned HD.My setup is typical I use my Bundled DVD and clean format HD ,intall Snow Leopard ,update all and then go to App store download Lion and then you chose your set up .
Most would upgrade to lion by installing on top of snow leapard.
I chose to install lion alone on a partition.
Today I was talking to Apple about an issue with accessing repair and disk permissions on an encrypted volume in Lion recovery Disk Utilities usually greyed out because one must turn off File Vault then go to Lion Recovery Disk Utilities by Start up ,press options the 2 partitioned volumes 1 Lion 2 Snow Leopard 3rd volume  Lion recovery Disk Utilities.
,If File Vault is on it will not be there but when one selects volume 1 Lion and Command and R  Lion recovery Disk Utilities appears but Lion Volumeo Recovery Disk Utilities will be greyed out you go tho unmount and it will prompt you for a Lion Password.
While doing this and repairing I encounted a Storage can not be repaired Error in red, Apple told me that  Lion Recovery Disk Utilities related issues are not supported if one has Snow Leoopard and Lion on a partitoned HD.
So one must upgrade on top of SnowLeaopard or use the Snow Leopard Bundled DVD to erase the volume 2 SnowLeopard ,then all will be well !
So what happens with Mountain Lion when using Snow Leopard Macs ?
Again Disclaimer : I am not an expert and my experience with Computers is trial and catastrophic errors.

  • OSX Snow Leopard and Plugin 2...

I read that plugin 2 is included in Snow Leopard OSX, well the SL box arrived today and no matter how much I shake it, no plugin 2 is falling out. So where is it hidden? or where the rumours of Apple finally being up-to-date with Java just another disapointment on the long road of Java under OSX? We at least now I have 32bit and 64bit Java 6 VM's yipee, only 2 years late Apple!

  • RAM issues with MacBook & Snow Leopard

Hey everybody. My mom bought Snow Leopard the other day and just went to install now, but her MacBook told her she needed more RAM. Is there any way we could clear some space up or something and not have to get a physical upgrade? Thanks.

RAM is the physical memory installed in the computer, not the space on the hard drive. Apparently the computer does not meet the minimum system requirements:
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
You will have to upgrade the computer's RAM. I recommend not less than 2 GBs for Snow Leopard.

  • What hard drives are compatible with OSX Snow Leopard Boot Camp?

Recently when the video card in my desktop Mac died, I decided to make some upgrades, one of them being the hard drive. After doing some research, I fixed on the Western Digital 3TB Caviar Green 3.5-Inch and had it installed at the same time as the new video card. I installed OS 10.6.8, opened up Boot Camp Assistant, set the partition sizes: 2.5 TB for my Mac side and 500 GB for the Windows. XP wouldn't install so I ordered Windows 7 and began trying to set up the Windows partition. Each time I tried, I got the same error -- Windows 7 couldn't install on the 500 GB partition since it was formatted GPT which was strange since when I looked at the partition inside of Disk Utility, it said NTFS. While troubleshooting, I came across the following:
・Mac users should know that WD's new drives do not support Boot Camp, therefore they cannot be used as a dual-boot hard drive.
・The MBR part of the hybrid partition table cannot work with 3TB hard drives. MBR is limited to 2TB.
・In a 32-bit MBR world, a disk larger than 2TB is probably invalid, and different OS's and tools react wildly differently when this is forced beyond 2TB.
I called Western Digital to confirm which of their drives were in fact compatible with Boot Camp and they replied since Boot Camp was a third-party application, they have no information on compatibility. They told me to call Apple to get the information. Before purchasing a new drive and sending back the 3TB WD, I want to be sure I know which specs to look for in a hard drive in deciding whether it is compatible with my machine. Any helpful advice or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Here are the specs for my Mac:
    2006 24" iMac 6,1 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    OS 10.6.8
    Boot Camp Assistant 3.0.4

Thanks for responding to my question. I guess I'm not sure I understand your reply though. I had no problem installing OS X on the 3TB WD Caviar Green and WD assured me that if I wanted to install only Windows 7 on it, there would be no compatibility issues. The problem lies with wanting the drive to be dual-bootable I guess via using Boot Camp (I know of no other way to go about it). The tech at OWC (where I bought the drive) said he had never heard of any problems with being able to install both Mac and Windows OS on the drive. In fact, he gave the same reply as yours: most hard drives should be able to work perfectly fine with your Mac. It's just that I can't get XP or Windows 7 (32 bit or 64 bit) to install on the 2nd partition, making the drive I have now not dual-bootable. The tech said 2TB hard drives were different and should solve the problem but when I asked him for any discernible spec I could look for in shopping for a replacement drive, he couldn't give me one, i.e. most drives should be okay. I have paid to have the 3TB installed and will have to pay to get the drive taken out and a replacement put back in -- I want to make sure whatever drive I put in this time allows me to have 2 partitions: one for my Mac OSX system and the other for my Windows enviroment (either XP or Windows 7).
If there is a work-around not involving Boot Camp, please let me know. I thought the reason for using Boot Camp as opposed to Disk Utility to create the dual-bootable drive was the benefit of using Mac drivers on the Windows side.
If there is another way, I don't understand why PC world made this blanket statement:
"Mac users should know that WD's new drives do not support Boot Camp, therefore they cannot be used as a dual-boot hard drive."

  • Freeze after updating to OSX Snow Leopard and version 10.6.8

My iMac periodically freezes.  This doesn't seem to be related to a particular app or website.

I have been working through the list of actions and I believe I have identified an issue repairing permissions. I ran Disk Utility from the HD and it reported several issues and that they were repaired. I repeated the repair and the same thing happened. I repeated several times expecting to eventually have the utility report that no repairs were needed. Instead, it kept reporting apparently the same permissions problems and that they have been fixed.
I next tried booting off the install DVD and repeating above. Same result. How do I remedy disk permissions issues that won't stay repaired?
I will look around the forums, but wanted to report an update.
The repairs filled about six pages of a Word file; here are a few samples of what is reported:
