Issues with sleep mode...

Hi,
I have a PowerMac G4 Dual 1,25Ghz MDD, when I'm not using the machine I put it to sleep from the menu and it will sleep correctly and wakes up when I press any key on the keyboard.
But if I use the Option-Command-Eject to sleep, then only the monitor goes black and nothing else, also waking up from this mode is impossible, I have to powered down/up to get everything working. (Or I have not found any other way)
Shouldn't these too be the same? I have searched the Apple documentation and could not find any info that this would initiate different sleep modes.
regards,
Sebastian

Hi-
Two questions:
What keyboard are you using?
Did this issue occur before update to OS 10.4.9, or, after the update? If the answer is "after update", please see the following:

  • USB 2.0 issue with sleep mode--help!

    hey there,
so i've searched this forum's board and found that it seems quite a few people have had issues with USB 2.0 and sleep mode on the mac. most of what i read, however, comes from people not being able to put the computer to sleep once new USB 2.0 cards or devices are installed. that is not the problemm I seem to be having, but is this:
I recently purchased a Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card, and installed it on my MAC G4 tower. It seemed to work ok for a little while, but then i noticed that AFTER i put the computer to sleep, when it 'awakens' from slumber, it no longer reads the USB devices. if the device was plugged in prior to sleep mode, it sometimes reads ok. but if I try and plug in a new USB device, such as an iPod or flash drive, no dice. it doesn't mount on the Mac.
I called Belkin tech support, and they were very helpful, but told me that the macs have had issues powering the USB PCI card once the computer is in sleep mode. they even directed me to an apple support page that has downloads that seem to address this, but they're for 10.0-10.0.4. I don't want to download that onto my mac (10.3.9) cuz im worried it might screw something up on my OS.
I would LOVE a download link for a software updater for this if someone knows where it is, otherwise, I may have to return this thing to Belkin and go with a more mac-friendly brand. so im open to that possibility, too.
any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!
    cheers,

I would either complain to Belkin for a fix if there is one or return the card and try a different one. You should not have the problem, but Belkin USB hubs and cards appear to have more problems like yours than other manufacturers' products.
    You might try Sonnet's Tango FW400/USB 2.0 multi-card, for example, or Firewire Direct's 6-port FW800/USB 2.0 card.

  • Issues Exiting Sleep Mode and Odd Behavior On Restart with GPU

I'm running a completely stock HP P7-1240 desktop except for an EVGA GeForce GTX 750 TI SC GPU. The GPU runs fine when the computer is up and running (which is odd because the forums have several other threads mentioning that the 700 series should be incompatible with my BIOS).
However, there are two main strange problems that have arisen since installing the GPU. One is that, whenever the computer enters sleep mode, it refuses to wake back up properly. It seems to me that the computer activates but does not send any signals out from the back panel (at the very least, no video signal because my monitors stay blank). On a rare occasion, it will wake back up properly, but at least 90% of the time, it needs to be restarted. Upon restart, sometimes the same issue occurs (no video output), and the computer needs to be restarted a second time before it will boot up again.
This leads to the second problem. When starting, the computer goes to a black screen listing basic computer specs (see attached photo. At this screen, the computer does not respond to any input.  It proceeds to beep 3 times, all the same length and pitch spaced about 30 seconds apart. After the third beep, the screen goes black and then the computer boots up normally with no further odd behavior.
Without the GPU, none of these issues happen. At the very least, not regularly.
I have seen another thread mentioning that, although the HP support page for my desktop does not list it, there is a BIOS update for my motherboard that has fixed issues relating to more modern GPU's. By nature of it being a BIOS update that does not (appear to) officially support Windows 7, I'm hesitant to move forward with that potential solution.
Although I'm planning to build myself a new computer from scratch at some point, I was hoping to at least get another year out of this machine, if not 2.  While this issue doesn't appear to be immediately threatening the stability of the computer, I can't help but think that this is an issue I should iron soon to avoid future issues (not to mention it would save me a fair amount of electricity to be able to enter sleep mode on a regular basis).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello @johnmwalker,
I understand that you are having some issues with your HP Pavilion p7-1240 Desktop PC waking up from sleep mode. I am not sure how much can be done for the delay on your startup with an OEM BIOS you are limited in what you can do and since your graphic card works I think you would be better off not messing too much with the BIOS at this point. The one thing I would try is going into the BIOS using the HP Support document:BIOS Setup Utility Information and Menu Options, and under Advanced > Power-On Options set POST Messages to Disable and POST Delay (in seconds) to None.
Now the waking from sleep mode issue  could just be the hybrid sleep setting causing you an issue with sleep mode. Use the following steps to disable hybrid sleep:
    Step 1. Click Start
    Step 2. Click Control Panel.
Step 3. Click System and Security
    Step 4. Click Power Options
Step 5. Click High Performance from Power Options
Step 6. Click Change plan settings
Step 7. Select Change advanced power settings
Step 8. Click the plus (+) sign next to Sleep
Step 9. Click the plus (+) sign next to Allow hybrid sleep
Step 10. Select Off from the drop-down menu
    Step 11. Click OK

We recently switched ISPs. To connect to the new ISP our Airport Extreme has to be in bridge mode. Now our Nintendo Wii won't connect to the Airport. Is it an issue with bridge mode that is causing this? We're running two Macs wirelessly with no problems.  And the Wii did connect before the switch.

Hello and thanks for the reply.  I gave this a try, turned off Airport on one of the computers and tried the Wii again.  Still no connection.  I should say that we're also running an old G4 (wired) off the Airport as well, with no problems.  I've tried many things to make the Wii to work, including power cycling the Airport, turning off the security settings in the Airport, resetting the Airport to it's default and redoing the network, resetting the network setting on the Wii (several times), moved the Airport closer to the Wii, all with no luck.  The Wii "sees" the Airport but won't connect to it.  I'm at a loss for anything else to try, so any help is appreciated.

  • Problem With Sleep Mode

I have my computer set up, so that after 15 minutes of inactivity, it goes to sleep mode. Well when I decided to wake up the computer, the computer woke up, but not the monitor. I didn't know what to do so I tried shutting down. it didn't seem like it worked so I tried it again & then I could hear the hard drive making this loud noise. I was able to get it to shut down & it was fine after that. The only application I had open was Safari. This is the first time I have had this issue. Is there anything that I can do so that it won't do that again or should I contact Mac support? Thank you!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    EletricB,
That box being checked is the "default" setting at System Preferences>Energy Saver>Sleep - towards the lower left just above the "Restore Defaults" button. Yours is probably still checked if you're not aware of it. It won't be long and you'll soon feel like an old hand with your Mac.
I'm not aware of any official reasoning for the default setting, although there may be one that sounds perfectly logical. I simply believe it is unnecessary. Most everyone today is in a hurry, so making them wait for an extra second or two just to be able to get back to work (after someone gets a phone call that takes their attention from doing anything at all with the computer) is a penalty more than a help.
Leaving it checked will not be worthwhile in extending the life of the hard drive. Mine is unchecked and my computer (and its hard drive) are on 24/7 without issue.

  • Problem with sleep mode!!! Help!!

I have an Ipod nano and recently updated it. Since then, when my ipod automatically goes to sleep mode it no longer plays the music/audiobooks I listen to, when it would continue before. This is terribly inconvienent and pretty much goes against the whole point of listening to my ipod. HOW do I fix this?! I can only guess it was part of the update. Help

There is another thread about the sleep/wake mode issue as well. I really didn't think that this was my issue until you said that the update included a change in this specifically. I'm not sure why the headphones would start playing music through them until it was plugged in all the way--that would be a better way of preventing this problem and not causing this misunderstanding with the sleep/wake mode. But my issue is that I can not push the headphones in any farther (it does make that click sound and it is clear it is in)...but this problem hasn't been since I bought the nano, just since the update so I know it is related to this change. So basically I have to buy new headphones because of the update??? What I was doing before was unplugging the headphones from the nano in hopes the music would not start playing again in my bag. That seemed to be working fine. Isn't there another solution for people who have the headphones in as far as they can go and don't want to have to replace their headphones?

  • Problem with sleep mode-T400

    Hey Guys,
I have a lenovo T-400, Windows Vista Home Basic 32Bit. When I put my computer to sleep and try to wake it up within 5 minutes, it wakes up but it doesn't wake up when the sleep time goes beyond 5 mins.
Here are the "few" things that I have tried:
    1) Installed Windows Xp Pro(Service Pack 2 and 3)
    2) Installed Windows Vista Home Premium( My own Copy)
    3) Installed Windows Vista Home Basic( Lenovo Recovery Disks)
    4) Installed Service packs for the above mentioned windows.
    5) Ran Lenovo System Update and updated all softwares(Including BIOS, Power Manager and Display Drivers)
    6) Ran Lenovo System Toolbox(which says everything is working fine)
    7) Called Lenovo Customer Care every other day for past one month-with no success)
    8) Turned Security Chip as "Active" in the bios( as suggested by someone in this forum)
    9) Spoke to Lenovo Customer Support to replace my laptop( but they say that it is not a hardware issue so they can't do anything about it)
    10) Visited many windows forums and tried installing windows hotfix meant to cure this problem but again no success.
    11) I have also tried matching settings of my laptop with another T400 laptop(in which sleep mode works), but no success.
12)Finally I was suggested by a friend to use this forum and that I would definitely get a solution here.
Please help me. I am a student and therefore the proper functioning of sleep mode feature is very important for me.
Also, My laptop is under warranty for one more year.

    Hi,
Have you check you settings in Power Manager. If you start it, switch to advanced mode and check inactivity settings for the power profile you are using  you will find that you can set times for shutting down certain things. Look if you have things set to shutdown after 5 minutes.
The obvious suspect would be that you have set the machine to hibernate after  5 minutes (although this seems very short). Once you have found the "suspect" change the time to verify that this is what causes the problem.

  • Login issues from sleep mode after OSX maverick update

After upgrading to OSX Maverick on my 13" MacBook Pro, I am having issues with logging in after it being in sleep mode. Everytime I close the screen to go somewhere and open it back up to continue what I was working on I type my password in (I am the only user, no other user accounts) it acts like the password is wrong and the only way to get logged in is to hold the power button down to shut the computer off then power it back up, then I can login.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Problem with sleep mode in Win 7

    Hello Friends,
I have a great problem after Windows 7 updated itself. I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite L505D. When I close the lid, it should automatically go to the sleep mode. Unfortunately, only the screen is black and the laptop is still running, I have to shut it down then switch on again. Is it a problem with the 'battery driver'?Please, help me :)

Before you continue to wait for solution and waste your time back-up all your important data and reinstall OS again using HDD recovery installation - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
After doing this you will have clean preinstalled and well working OS again.
The first thing you should do after OS installation is to disable automatic Windows update. Do it manually and install important updates only.

  • I am having trouble with sleep mode for my macbook pro

My Macbook pro 13" is getting old, about late 2009.

Sometimes I can't wait that long so I hold down the turn off button then turn my mac on again.

  • Ipod has issues with Sleeping and Backlight

Hello, i'm having some issues with my ipod, (Nano 4th gen, assuming you already knew that because of the forum i posted in :D)
Anyways, a couple of days ago, i was using my Ipod, and i paused it for a bit. When i looked back a minute later i noticed the backlight was on even though i set it to turn off every 2 seconds. I reset it (menu+center) and played a couple songs, paused it and it did the same. The Backlight remained on even though the setting was as mentioned.
I ignored it, and maybe 4 days later, i hit the Sleep option on the menu, the iPod turned off, then started turning itself on and off repeatedly, even while i had the lock switched on. I reset it, and tried to turn it off with the Sleep option and it keeps turning itself on and off. If i try to make it Sleep with the Play/Pause button, it will do the same.
Now earlier i went to the Debug (or w/e it is) menu, (Menu+Center, Select+Left) to mess around and see if i could find anything weird there and went to IO>IOSTATUS, and noticed that USBDETECT was flickering between 1 and 0, but i don't know if that explains whats going on with my ipod
Thanks in advance, and please help me fix my ipod! xD

Honestly, I have no clue what's happening with your iPod. But on mine, I have the same kind, I did the same thing and went to IOSTATUS and under usb detect for me it just says 0 so maybe that has something to do with it. I hope you manage to get it to work again.

  • Help with sleep mode

Is there a way to disable sleep mode when the lid is closed?

Since you make no detail available as to the reason for your question, certain assumptions will have to be made to answer fully.
As such, I assume you want to do this so you can run the unit with a separate monitor, mouse and keyboard (sort of like a desktop).
No, you can't disable the action of the system to go into sleep mode upon closing the lid, using any native process or procedure. However, there are third party applications available to do so. I would not reccommend them. The chances are too great that, sooner or later, you would erroneously close the lid on a running system and place the computer in a compromising situation, such as enclosure within a case or bag, wherein overheating would be a practical certainty.
Apple does however incorporate the ability to "wake" the sytem, without having to re-open the lid. This is called "closed  clamshell" mode. This is to offer users a means to run their unit while hooked to an external monitor, BlueTooth keyboard and BlueTooth mouse.
    The procedure is detailed here.

  • Problems with sleep mode in 10.4.7

I recently upgraded to OS 10.4.7 and now the sleep mode doesn't work like it used to. On all other versions of the OS, i'd put the computer to sleep and whenever I wanted to start it up again I'd wiggle the mouse or hit any key on the keyboard. Now, neither of those work. The system goes into sleep mode as usual, but the only way to wake it is by hitting the power button on the tower. Is this an OS bug? Is there a fix? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
    G4 MDD 1.42 Dual, 1.5GB RAM, 4 Hard drives (1 system, 1 media, 1 render, 1 elements)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still did'nt work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
    Cheers!

  • Problem with sleep mode reset

When my iPhone is unattached from the charging source and the phone goes into sleep mode it automatically, continuously resets itself and kills the battery. There is no way to take the phone out of this cycle unless it is plugged back into a charging source. Once plugged in the phone will automatically turn on and function normally. If the settings on the phone are changed so the phone does not enter a sleep mode the phone functions normally. If the phone is plugged into the power source and goes into sleep mode it does not reset itself, it functions normally. Can someone please help with this problem. I have already completely uninstalled and reinstalled the software via Apple consultant at 800-my-apple.

by "wake up" i mean not powering it up from start. but wake it from sleep. (push sleep button, so it goes dark. then push home button to wake it up again. try swiping up.)
This problem do not happend everytime.
can`t find out when it does.
