Issues with spotlight, system preferences, and other programs

I am having some incredibly frustrating issues since I autoupdated last week. Since using autoupdate, My spotlight will not work (I type in information and it deletes the characters moments after i type it, and my system preferences will not open; it merely closes after 2-3 seconds. I saw on the spotlight board that to fix the spotlight, you must index the spotlight to make it work after an update, but I cannot do that because system preferences will not work. Dows anybody have any input???
Thanks!

I'm not sure if this helps, but here is my log in my console. I tried deleting thd files you mentioned, however it is still malfunctioning. Any other ideas???
Thank!

  • Any known issues with Essbase 64 bit and other components as 32 bit

    Hi Everyone,
Are there any known issues with 64 bit Essbase and other components (Planning, EAS, Provider services, EAS, Workspace and Reporting) in 32 bit?
    Version is EPM 11.1.1.3
The reason for choosing ESSBASE 64 bit is of course performance. We decided to stick to 32 bit for the web applications due to some known issues and bitter experiences in past in this version with 64 bit web deployments.
OS is Windows 2003 Server (64 bit for the ESSBASE server and 32/64 bit for the application server)
    Thanks,
    Sayantan

Hyperion 32-bit Web Apps are fully compatible with Essbase 64-bit. Same with 32-bit Essbase client.

  • Troubles with opening Finder, System Preferences, and others from dock

I am having problems with Finder, System Preferences, applications like Word, Excel, and Firefox. When I click on their icons in the dock, the menu bar appears with the name of the application and file, edit, etc. but the application does not open a window on the screen. I just see my background pic. Some of the items in the menu bar that pop down don't work. However, apps like my mail, Safari, Itunes and others work properly.
If anyone can help me with some suggestions, that would be great!

    Hello t:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Do those applications open from the application folder? If they do:
Try trashing a preference file and restarting (com.apple.dock.plist).
If that does not help, drag the icons that do not work off the dock (poof sound). Then go to the application folder and drag the appropriate icon to the dock.

  • With 10.2 I can only use system speaker output for audio, NOT my RME FF400 I used previously. The FF400 works fine with other apps. How can I set this device in FCP 10.2? (it is set in both system preferences and midi)

With 10.2 I can only use a system (e.g. speaker) output for audio, NOT my RME FF400 I used without any problems previously. The FF400 works fine with other apps (some like TwistedWave) setup in the program, and others (like Spotify) using system preferences & audio midi setup. How can I set the FF400 to be the sound output device in FCP 10.2? N.B. The FF400 is set as sound output device in both system preferences and audio midi setup.

I have the solution! Well it at least worked for me. This is the response I got from Apple, Can you please try the following steps towards fixing your audio issue, and report back with your results?
    1. Open the application Audio Midi Setup (located in Applications : Utilities)
    2. Select the Output Tab for the current output device
    3. Select the Configure Speakers option
    4. Select the Multichannel tab
    5. Change the setting to Stereo Now mine was set to stereo but the left channel wasn't showing left. re-clicking on stereo reloaded the settings and after clicking apply it worked.

  • System Preferences and Safari issues

Hi I have a very concerning issue with system preferences and a smaller issue with Safari (7.0).  When I open system preferences and navigate to the "internet accounts" page and try to remove an account or click the "Advanced" button, nothing happens.  I see a faint flicker of the system prefs window but nothing changes.  Another example is when I click on the "networks" page and try and open the "Advanced" window, nothing happens. I also can't sign out of iCloud or view my iCloud account information the buttons seem to do nothing.  I've already tried installing mavericks again, deleting appropriate plists, resetting PRAM/NVRAM, repairing the disk and repairing disk permissions to no avail and I really need to find a solution.  If this helps, the guest account does not have any issues described above.  The safari issue is minor but when Safari opens, there is a gray box around the page title in the top bar of safari no matter what webpage im on.  I have tried resetting safari, deleting caches and extensions but nothing works.  I really appreciate any help with these issues.
Here is an example of the Safari issue.

Do you have the installer DVD? If you do:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the OS X Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

Thank you.  I didn't know about the universal access adjustment.  All the way left is a little better, but still much fainter than on my own imac.  I'm not sure why apple uses grey typeface, but it's so faint on this imac monitor that it was difficult to find the "reply" option on this post.  Are there any other suggestions?  thank you

Can someone help me?How do I take the zoom feature off my MacBook Pro? I have already went to System Preferences and turned "zoom" off in the Universal Access. I saw where someone said to use THREE fingers to double click... ??? Double click what? And 3 fingers?

What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization.  With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options.  If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast.  I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why?  How is this making it a better program?  I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was).  But to not give users the option to delete that list?  It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating.  I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature.  It smacks of rank incompetence.
What improvement were they trying to make here anyway?  There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions.  Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
And reverting to a previous version is no solution.  I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.

  • Safari, iChat cannot connect to internet but FF and other programs can

I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6 and the upgrade is mostly very good. SL is nice and snappy, programs launch faster etc however....
Initially I had the no internet problem which I fixed by trashing the plist files in SystemConfiguration folder and rebooting. So that all worked and I could use the internet however....
The weirdest thing is that Safari will not connect to the internet, it just loads, then beachballs then I have to force quit it. Software Update does not work - just won't connect to the net and iChat just loads and shows nothing. Preference menu item is greyed out and noen of my accounts are shown there and it can't connect to the net however...
Very oddly, Firefox, MailPlane, Netnewswire etc all work perfectly and use the internet and all is fine. So there must be something somewhere aside from the plists I have deleted that are not allowing the connection with the Apple apps.
It's really my first experience ever of having a major issue on a system upgrade. I really don't want to have to do a clean install if I can help it.
Any help would be great thx.

When this occurs it's usually because a proxy is set in the Network preference pane when one isn't needed or vice-versa.
Firefox uses its own proxy settings and as such doesn't rely on the settings in System Preferences.

  • Deleting Orphaned Preferences and Other Files

Under Classic there were a couple of apps that would seek out and list orphaned preferences and other files from applications that had been deleted from the computer. There are some UNINSTALLER apps for Leopard, but I can't seem to find any that will list orphaned files for deletion. What I want to do is get rid of orphaned files from apps that I probably hand-deleted some time ago.
    Anyone know of a solution?

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.
If you have uninstaller software already installed then it should, typically, alert you to associated files that you may want to delete. But they will not work for applications you have deleted prior to installing the uninstaller software.

In System Prefereneces, when I am in Desktop and Screen Saver, I am unable to remove folders. I've seen one other report like yours, and I think the issue is caused by a bug, but I don't know what triggers it.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Missing system prefrences and other apps!! What do i do!?

My I book G4 with tiger has been having some issues. First my (system preferences, mail, automator ect.) applications are missing. I have a external hard drive but i do not know how to go about backing it up. My computer is also experiencing long startup times (2+ min.) and trouble connecting to wi-fi. Please help me.

If the computer shipped with the Tiger 10.4.x system on DVD media, then you
have most if not all the stuff to get going on that install disc#1. You can start
the computer from the install disc 1 by inserting that disc into the optical drive
and restarting with the C key held down. This gets you into the Installer; but
within the first page with a full window and the Installer menu-bar, you have
options and access to tools, such as Disk Utility. And options in Disk Utility.
Depending on what kind of external drive unit you have, it could be used as a
backup. Some kinds of backups are best done to a FireWire enclosed HDD
with a bootable chipset for making bootable clones of OS X using a clone utility
such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper; both are download utilities and
they can be utilized directly once the instructions from their home pages are clear.
A clone should not be performed to a USB2.0 drive if expected to be bootable in
the older PPC Macs; though some users had some successes in some instances
the FireWire drive appeared the best overall setup to be invested in for those.
You could use Pacifist utility (will run in Demo mode) to extricate correct packages
from the Installer, to attempt to repair by reinstalling, just the parts that are missing.
Pacifist can install parts of the system as it pulls them from a source and makes an
installer on the desktop. This can be tricky, since it may not work the first time. And
some aspects of the instructions can be unclear, making the result non-functional.
An 'Archive & Install' - then update the resulting new system folder using the Combo
and last security updates, all Java updates, quicktime, shockwave & flash player,
new browsers, and other parts, could be the best way to go. If the hard disk drive is
not failing, a full new installation on a zero-overwritten and reformatted hard disk drive
would be a way to assure yourself the old content would be wiped out totally; so some
kind of backup of even a defective drive's contents would be a good idea.

With a mangled System and missing parts, some aspects of making an archive may be
difficult. And your Disk Utility in the computer's system normally is within the Applications
folder, in a Utilities folder. If Apps is gone, so is the Disk Utility. There is one on the boot
install disc; so you can prepare an appropriate external hard disk drive with that, for use
as a backup or clone host, if it is suitable.
You have a few options. I'm still trying to figure out how the System Preferences and
Applications folders could be missing or trashed from a user's computer. Unless a
helper who had access to the computer while the admin-owner was away, had fun
and opened folders, files, drives; and played drag-drop, trash, etc.
Had you tried a search for System Preferences to see if that item was moved into
some other incorrect location or the Apps moved into another folder?
    Sound like fun...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • Is there an issue with Safari in Iphones and Ipads where it does not recognize option disabled="disabled" tag properly?

    Greetings everybody,
I have run into a peculiar problem with the Safari browser on mobile platforms (IPad, IPod, IPhone) which I hope I can find a solution for in this community.
I just launched a new website where I sell products with certain variations, for example please view this link: http://www.finerribbon.com/aegean-single-face-satin-ribbon.html
On this particular product, the product variants are supposed to work in such a way where:
If you select the value "1/8" from the "Choose Ribbon Width" field
    THEN
The only options active and available to choose from in the "Choose Roll Size" field should be: 500 Yds, 20 Yds & Sample Swatch
Now, if we browse to the above link in Safari using a desktop or a laptop, there are no problems at all, but if we browse to the above link using an IPhone or an Ipad, then we have a problem where all the options are available regardless of the values chosen, basically the above functonality does not work.
I was told that there an issue with Safari in Iphones and Ipads where it does not recognize option disabled="disabled" tag properly, is this true? Can anyone advise me if there is a solution to this problem? I would sincerely apperciate it.
Thank you very much for your time and help!
