IStabilize black borders

Hello all,
I have recently tried the demo version of iStabilize in iMovie HD5. It works very well and I will buy it if I can remove the black borders that appear around the edges after the stabilizing process has been completed.
On a previous post Tom Wolsky,(writer of many great books),suggested scaling up the image. Does anyone know how to do this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

the stabilize plug-in in the Slick8 package from geethree.com does the zoom-in automatically.. = no black borders..

and iM09's stabilize effect adds no borders too..

• I plugged my macbook pro into an external monitor, then unplugged it later and now it is stuck with black borders on top and bottom and zoomed out like it is still on the monitor. How do I fix it?

I started using my external monitor with my macbook pro and as soon as I plug it in it to the monitor it adjusts the screen by zooming out a bit and creating about 3/4 of an inch black borders on the top and bottom of the screen. But these dont show up on the monitor so I assumed it was fine. But when I took it off the monitor, the borders were still there like it was still on the monitor. Any hellp? Its starting to mess with my eyes haha.

Hi aefulcher,
It sounds like you had the external display set to mirror the internal display so the resolution(s) were changed to match each other.

• Black Borders when playing games

Hey,
so lately, I got a new HP Envy TouchSmart laptop. Everything is alright except: When I run games at a native ( 1920x1080p ) resolution, everything is fine. But when I lower down the resolution,  on my screen, black borders apear all around the sides. So this means, that it doesn't stretch. Altough, if I set the games mode to Borderless, it fixes the problem, but still it's anoying in some games.
I tried many ways to fix this ( which I found from the internet ) : Trying to lower the resolution in desktop and setting Scale On Fullscreen; updating the Intel drivers, downloading apps...
I really need help with this, as not all of the games have a Borderless mode ( eg. AC4 ).
System Specifications:
Intel i7 4702MQ @2.2ghz boost up to 3.2ghz
Intel HD Graphics 4600 ( Integrated ) - Driver 10.18.10.3960
Nvidia 750M  ( Dedicated )
8gb ram
TouchSmart
Thanks for any information, I would really like to fix this

I am trying to remove 2 full page size black borders in my pages document and whn i click on them they show greyed x's but i cannot manipulate or remove them.   What to do?

John,
While the grayed x corners are showing, Arrange > Unlock.
Now you will be able to manipulate or delete the borders.

• IPhoto 09 - iDVD 09: black Borders left/right AND top/bottom

Setup: Snow Leopard 10.6.3, iPhoto 09, iDVD 09, all patches applied.
Source Material: HiDef 3:2 pictures in iPhoto, arranged in a iPhoto slideshow.
Export: "publish to iDVD" in iPhoto - everything works fine.
Settings in iDVD: professional quality, Always scale slide to TV Safe area: DISABLED. aspect ratio: 16:9
Target: Full HD TV Screen 16:9
Result: the image quality is not great, but ok. But: there are huge black borders left/right (which is perfectly fine given the difference between 16:9 and 3:2) AND on the top and buttom of the TV - which is not acceptable by any means.
When I start the DVD on the Mac DVD-Player, there are no borders in windowed mode, but in full screen too.
It seems as iDVD 09 simply ignores the uncecked "scale..." preset box.
Can anyone confirm this, any suggestions? Setting up the slideshow in iDVD/iMovie itself is not an option here, hence my dad is still struggling to get things right in iPhoto

No, it's just in fill screen mode.
Bengt Wärleby wrote:
This is not an iMovie or Apple problem but due to mixing 4x3 and 16x9 material
It's 2:3 Material (DSLR Pictures), so this won't help.

You can try to make this the other way around. Start a WideScreen project and
now You will get the bordet around the 4x3 material instead.
Only solution is to crop or enlarg one of the material types to get it right.
As I stated before, there HAVE to be borders for the 2:3 Material on a 16:9 Screen (unless you do some heavy cropping). But I can see no reason why there should be borders on top/bottom of ANY material. As I see it, it's a problem related to a disfuncional "adjust for TV" setting, not the aspect ratio.
Thanks anyway.
Any other comments?

• Black borders on import from camcorder

When I import into iMovie from my Sony TRV520 camcorder I get a smaller image with black borders. Is there a way to get the full image?
I'm using iMovie 6.0.3

... afaik, your - sorry to say that! - 'old' camcorder supports 4:3 only.. have you tried to import into a 16:9 project? .. which your version of iM allows to do so...

• IMac 27-inch with - Black borders around smaller resolutions

Hey,
Back with Boot Camp 3.0, I've had problems with the color depth. It said 32-bit while it appeared to be 16-bit. Now it's been fixed with Boot Camp 3.1.
However, I have an even more annoying problem now. I can't use the native resolution of my display because things are way too small on it. So I'm using the classic 1080p (1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz) resolution. Problem is, my computer is STILL in 2560 x 1440, and I see Windows 7 occupying 1920 x 1080 pixels, centered vertically and horizontally in the middle of my screen. Around it, there's huge black borders.................
I have a Radeon 4850 by the way. I read somewhere that it had to do with having two monitors, but never installed another monitor on this computer.
I've tried installing and reinstalling and uninstalling a bunch of official and non-official drivers from ATI. I guess I still haven't found the good one... or I haven't found the good option in Windows that fixes this.
Any idea? I know I'm not the only one with this problem, but I haven't found much information on the web about that.

Hi,
using the ATI Catalyst Control Center (usually part of the downloadable Catalyst Driver Suite) should provide an option in the Display properties to use lower than native resolutions 'stretched' (without the black borders).
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx
Before installing drivers, it is always recomended to make a System restore Point and/or have a backup to revert back easily in case of troubles.
Also you should remove all remnants of older or other drivers using either the Windows "Software" option, a provided uninstaller or DriverSweeper.
Regards

• The Quicktime 10.1 viewer adds black borders

Since updating to Lion, the Quicktime viewer adds borders to my pre-existing videos. No matter how I re-size the window the borders remain on the sides of my portrait aspect ratio videos.  They played just fine (borderless) before upgrading, now the black borders cover other parts of my presentation.  Anyone know how to make them go away.  It's a shame that they would induce such an unelegant feature.  Using Quicktime 7 for the time being, just moving the videos to the bottom of the viewing area to eleminate the controls.  VLC player doesn't loop and won't allow me to drag for random sizing. Just gives me 1/2 full, double-sized, etc.

And what aspect ratio are "your" videos?  Landscape?
Aha! Now I see what you are getting at. Still doubt this is a deliberately "added feature" but do consider it to be a bug introduced in QT v10.1. In my opinion it is likely due to fractional aspect ratios and is a problem similar to QT 7 pixel dimension problem when width is <348 pixels. Problem may be due to the fact that portrait views are still embedded as 1280x720  files (aspect 1.78:1) even though they are being displayed as 720x1280 (aspect 1:0.56). Have not run tests to determin an exact "break point" for bug, but have observed that all mixed number apects seem to display properly. You will also observe that as QT X switches to "Full Screen" for these portrait views, that the pillaring shrinks and disappears. Would definitely sugguest others report this in QT X feedback to see if it can be fixed.

• Settings dimensions - can't get rid of black borders

Hi
I'm using Final Cut Express 4.0.1. I have a 30sec quicktime movie that I need to import and then add some music too and then export with the same dimensions. The current dimensions are 1024x567. However even when I set dimensions to the custom setting of 1024x567 when exporting I end up with black borders at the top and the bottom of the movie. I think part of the problem is that I need to change settings in FCE before I export as when Im looking at the movie in the 'canvas' box it has those same black borders. However I cant seem find any where to change the main project settings...
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi
I tried to follow your instructions and this is what it looked like in FCE.

When I export it either as anamorphic or something else the black borders are still there.
The properties of the original clip are
Dimensions: 1024x576
codecs: AAC, H.264
Color profile: HD (1-1-1)
Is that what you were after?
Thanks!

• GT60 3K IPS black borders around the screen on lower resolutions

I've got an MSI GT60 with 3K IPS display and GF880M and although it's a very powerful machine it sometimes isn't fast enough to play the games with the native resolution on high details, therefore in several games I wanted to lower the resolution to get a better experience. However this is where I have a problem, because if I change the resolution in-game what usually happens (80% of the games I've tried) is the screen is getting smaller and I have back borders around it. This is kind of frustrating and I wanted to ask if you know any way of sorting out this issue. I'd like to be able to play a game at 1080P for example but have it stretched to the whole screen.
Some of the games I've observed this behaviour:
1. L.A. Noire
2. Assassin's Creed: Black Flag
3. Far Cry 3
4. Max Payne 3
I've tried lowering the Windows resolution prior to opening the game but it makes no difference. I've also looked at the nVidia Control Panel because some of the versions of the drivers had the option to stretch lower resolution to full screen but in the latest one I couldn't find it.
As the result of this I'm feeling a little frustrated that although the notebook itself is one of the most powerful ones available on the market I cannot play it the way I wanted and I begin to think paying extra for the 3K display was a mistake a I should've gone with the 1080P version. But I hope there's a fix for this issue.

I've found a workaround but it's very annoying as I have to apply it everytime I launch a game (or if I accidently alt-tab back to windows desktop).
1. Run the game and let it launch with the back borders
2. Ctrl+Alt+Del and go to desktop (don't Alt-Tab, it won't work)
3. Open Intel Graphics properties, change the resolution to 3k, apply changes, than change it back to 1080P or whichever you like and mark the Desktop Stretching option. Apply changes.
4. Back to the game and the black borders should now be gone.
It's a workaround, not a solution. I'd really like that MSI, nVidia or whoever is responsible for this behavior find a permament fix.

• Black borders, Adobe CS4 & Canon Eos 550D

Hi All,
Im pretty new to the video scene, and ive got adobe cs4 for a while but never
used it alot, now im recording video's with a canon eos550d with a great quality,
but allways after my bounce there appears 2 black borders up and down.
the video output format from the canon is: 1920 by 1080 .MOV H264
when I import it in a default page template called "DV PAL Widescreen 48K"
and using the youtube HD setting the output gives 2 black borders at the top of the movie and the bottom.
I tried to put the project to 1080p but then ive got no possibility to hit "enter" and a quick offline render..
is there a way to fix this ?
Thanks in advance,
Nick

You want a sequence with 1080p square pixels, for a frame size of 1920 x 1080. The presets in CS 4 are in the AVCHD section that would match this, dependent on the frame rate at which you shot and whether your camera shoots progressive or interlaced video. Chose the one that matches the frame rate you actually shot at, you can export at a different frame size and frame rate after editing. The fact that the presets are designed for editing video compressed using AVCHD doesn't really matter as long as the sequence settings match the actually footage.

• [i3] urxvt has black borders...

Hi there
I'm trying out the i3 window manager and it seems to be quite nice except for one little thing that is driving me mad.
urxvt always appears with some black borders around it and I don't know how to remove them.
I really can't understand if the responsible for this behaviour is i3 or urxvt but I noticed that:
- the empty space at the bottom is black too even if I use 'xsetroot -solid "1A1A1A" in my .xinitrc
- the same .Xdefaults in wmii works perfectly without black borders at all.
Is anyone able to help me? Any hint would be much appreciated.

You will most probably have those borders in wmii, too. I have them.
It really is an urxvt issue. There is something in the manpages about it, I think (not sure).
I doesn't bother me too much so I just left them there.

http://zattoo.com/view#dsf
http://zattoo.com/view#das-vierte
http://zattoo.com/view#zdf (HIQ)
With 4:3 channels like
http://zattoo.com/view#imusic1
it is ok.
I hope you can use all 5 channels for testing:

• Can I rotate a video without having the black borders?

Hi, I shot some movie on my camcorder. I had the camcorder at a right angle at the time. When I rotate it on imovie11 I am left with black borders either side. How can I remove these? I'd really appreciate some help asap with this as I am editing the project right now.... Thanks in advance!

Hi
Please - no offence - no irony in this at all - just bit of lack of phantasy (in my department). BUT
If You don't like it scaled up to fill sideways and You don't want black borders.
Is it stretched sideways You want . Short fat people and all scaled just sideways - or.
What do You want and wherefrom would that information be retrieved that should fill the black borders ?
What's not recorded can't be created magically as far as I know.
So I guess that You need to explain much more how You think it should look and with what material it would be created.
