IStat Menus freezes in Mountain Lion

Is anyone else having trouble with iStat Menus in Mountain Lion? Ever since I upgraded, my iStat has been freezing randomly. It will sometimes freeze for hours and then unfreeze briefly and then freeze up again. I can tell because my clock has seconds turned on, and when I hover over the iStat Menu section of my menu bar, I get beachball.
I tried changing my clock/calendar so it's only the calendar icon and then adding my regular Mac clock and calendar back, and moving most of my regular system icons to the right of the iStat icons (e.g., WiFi, VPN, Time Machine, Sync, system clock/calendar), but they still freeze up when iStat does. The only icons that don't freeze are Dropbox and Clusters, which are to the left of iState, and Spotlight and the Notifications icon, which are to the right of iStat. The VPN icon used to be to the left, but I moved it to see if that would help; it didn't.
This is making me want to uninstall iStat Menus, which is a shame, because I loved the program until Mountain Lion hit. I used it every day.

Ugh. I haven't tried this yet, mostly because I have a lot going on in my life right now (writing an M.F.A. thesis) and don't have time to wait on something to happen to my computer while in guest mode (in which I can't access my files and go about my business, in the meantime).
Hmm.
It's a good suggestion, though. I'll see if I can carve out some time to try it sometime.

I use MacBook Pro 13", 2011 edition. Since I installed Mountain Lion, my MBP's battery life drop from 7+ hours to roughly 5 hours overnight. Worse still, it freezes about once a day. Does anybody else experience this? Got tips to troubleshoot these issues?

I initially had similar issues with Mountain Lion, however I thought it was isolated to my configuration. I did make some adjustments using the command line power management tool and the difference are night and day. I never thought it amy have been a change in Mountain Lion. In any case, given the prevalence of this, I created a blog listing the changes I made and explaining it for those with increased interest.

  • Imac freezing- running Mountain Lion 10.8.4

Hi all - Running Mountain Lion 10.8.4 on an Imac 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3gb RAM. Have recently (last 2 weeks) started to get problems with system freezing on waking up from sleep, only way to cure is to force shut programs then turn off pc and reboot. Have scanned the net for similar problems and found that it seem to be becoming a common one, followed various bits of advice and have found that using the console feature and the logs it provides that my problem seems to originate with Time Machine. I had gone through the process of removing all my peripherals except TM and started to read the diagnostic logs on console for a common thread and noticed that there were constant references to Tm (see below) and backup alias.
    com.apple.backupd-helper[1741]
Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - failed to resolve alias to backup volume.
I decided to disconnect my TM and see what the result was - firstly I noticed there was a definite increase in the speed of my system and secondly that if I let the system go to sleep by itself when woken it worked fine, however if I forced sleep it froze on waking up, below is snapshot of the log at 3.00am in the morning

Appreciate that this possibly relates to me not having the TM connected - will reconnect and see what the result is and follow up.
I have spoken to our local Apple shop however they have not heard of the problem! The advice given is to save everything and do a clean install, however have noted on the net that this is not necessarily the answer to the problem. Am a bit loath to place my Imac in the shop for many hours work and not necessarily get the problem solved.
So any ideas as to where I go from here please!
    Many thanks

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • Imac freezes in Mountain Lion

Having installed Mt. Lion many months ago, in the last week, my imac is freezing both in Mail and in screen saver.  Any workarounds?

  • Imac freezes since mountain lion upgrade, i set to never sleep and then it is ok. any ideas what is going on?

This may be the same issue as some other discussions but I have a few different circumstances. I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago and all seemed to be ok. Then I got an upgrade notice for Itunes last week and installed the update. Since then My mac started freezing after coming out of sleep mode. The mouse was active but when i selected programs from the dock the icons would just bounce and nothing would open. The only way to revive it was to do a restart with the power button. Then the system would be fine until it went into sleep mode .After reading through several disussions it seems many people are having similar issues with very few fixes to the problem. I am not very savvy on mac O/S so I am in the dark as to where to begin to troubleshoot this problem. Since the freeze ups always occur after coming out of sleep mode I set my computer to never sleep which has worked to stop the freezing but I am not sure how good it is for my system to be running all the time. I would appreciate any input on this problem. My Imac is a 2008 intel with 3 gig ram

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMac freezing after Mountain Lion Upgrade

After upgrading my iMac to Mountain Lion it is freezing at least one a day. Sometimes the screen get messed up right before getting frozen, something like this video (from another guy), but they move from top to bottom to me.
I never had this problem before, it started right after the Mountain Lion upgrade.
Anyone with the same problem? Any ideas?

    Permissions Repair:
Go to applications then to the "other" folder then go to disk utility, on the left hand side you will see a white box.  Select the second option, usually called "mac HD" with that selected click on "repair permissions" in the center towards the bottom of the screen.  Wait for it to complete, then see if this fixes the issue.
    PRAM Reset:
1- Ensure the machine is powered off.
2- Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
3- Press the ‘power on’ button.
4- Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
5- Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally

  • Retina MacbookPro, Freezing after Mountain Lion Update.

    Hello,
I recently updated to mountain lion on my rMBP. My machine freezes every 30 minutes or so and All that works upon freezing is my cursor, I cannot do anything but a restart that fixes the problem for another 30 minutes. Some apps I had open where safari and cs6. There also appears to be an OpenGL issue when playing games probably related to the graphics card drivers.

Hi no real idea on this, but many Network connectivity issues have been solved by this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

  • Programs freeze after mountain lion install

Since installing Mountain Lion I am having a consistent problem of my programs freezing, having to force quit and then when try to reset the machine it won't shut down fully and I have to push power off. This is occurring for all programs regardless of whether an update has been provided for Mountain Lion. I have a 2011 Macbook Pro with 4GB of RAM and shouldn't have a problem with running the new OS.

If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up in Safe Mode  (It will take more time to startup because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps function correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Users & Groups >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test.

  • Mac Pro 12 core freezing on Mountain Lion

My Mac Pro freezes intermittently while using different types of applications.. This started after updating to Mountain Lion. Why :(?

    Tried:
ML Recovery - repairs followed by Safe Mode?
    Cloned the system. and tried?
Hopefully people would keep their last OS around for couple months, do a clean install of the new OS, run Setup Assistant
You could of course have something that is not ML compliant, apps drivers plug-ins, whatever.

  • Calendar & Contacts "freeze" with Mountain Lion

New Mountain Lion installation on 27 inch Imac from SL (also moved to ICloud from Mobile Me).  I have both calendar and contacts freezing all the time- I cannot even use the "address book" now called "contacts".  Icloud is spinning all the time on contacts trying to sync.  And all of the addresses I had on my mac are not there- it is all on Icloud - not what I wanted to see. With Mobile Me, you could designate how you wanted to sync- was the computer the master or the cloud.  Icloud just tries to take over.   My Imac has 20 GB ram - I should not have a power issue.  I would like my Imac to have the master file - not Icloud.
When I click on something in the calendar- it takes almost 5 minutes or NEVER to get into it- I am constantly sending out crash reports.  I cannot edit my calendar, I cannot get into the address book.  Calendar is crashing on my IPad too.  But Contacts are Ok on the IPad.   So it is defintely a Mountain Lion issue with the Contacts program.  Mail is slow too. Lots of hesitation before you can look at any of the mail.  Again, with 20GB of ram on a new IMac, the applications shoudl be lightning quick.
I have an address book backup prior to buying my new IMAC- Is there a way to get rid of this file and go back to the old one and start over?  How can I designate the IMac as the master file?

I had this problem. It was caused by me choosing to sync Calendar with iCloud when I did the ML install but not changing the setting on my iPhone. You have to use iCloud for both devices or none. I chose not to use iCloud for either but to get things working again you will need to jump though some hoops if you are in the same position I was in.
You will need to enable iCloud on your phone for Calendars as well as your MB and sync both to the cloud and merge the two calendars onto the Cloud.
Then export each of your calendars in Calendar on your MB to a .ics file using the File/Export command in Calendar. I don't think you can use the Archive option as this will duplicate settings as well and will put you back on the cloud as you move through the next steps.
Disable the iCloud setting for Calendar on your MB under Settings/iCloud. This will delete all your Calendar data on your MB.
Import the .ics files back in to Calendar.
Disable the iCloud setting for Calendar on your iPhone
Sync via iTunes and you should be good to go.

  • HT1338 IiMac freezing with Mountain Lion

Over the last few days I've had to manually reboot my iMac as it freezes when trying to open a range of applications. Only recent additions have been to update to OS X Mountain Lion and Real racing 2. If it is OS X Mountain Lion is there any news?

You can still do this in Pages 4.2. From the inline Help pages:
To save a document for use with iWork ’08 or Microsoft Word:
Choose File > Save As, or choose File > Save.
Type a new name for the document in the Save As field.
Choose where you want to save the document.
Select “Save a copy as,” and choose iWork ’08 or Word Document from the pop-up menu.
    Click Save.

  • '11 MacBook Air Freezing w/Mountain Lion

I have a 2011 MacBook Air (13", 4GB) that was rock solid with Lion for a year. However, ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I've been experiencing frequent freezes/lockups.
Sometimes, my Menu bar will freeze, and I'll get the spinning beachball, then the system will completely freeze requiring me to power down.
Other times, the machine will just instantly freeze, requiring a power down.
Still, in another annoying situation, I'll close the lid on my laptop while plugged in, come back a few hours later, and the machine won't wake up. No screen activity, not even any light noticeable through the Apple logo on the back of the screen. NOTHING.
It's getting to be to the point where I don't want to use my MBA anymore and try to do as much work as possible on my iPad.
Nothing has changed software/hardware wise since the upgrade to Mountain Lion. I even tried disabling PowerNap, but that didn't work.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • My Imac 27 keeps freezing since Mountain Lion installed

Is anyone else have freezing problems I have 8gbram i7 2.8ghz no help from tech support.

Morning, glad things are going ok .
I haven't re-installed Sophos yet. The Sophos forum are saying there's still an issue, so until I hear that they have resolved it, I'm leaving it uninstalled.
Under Lion, it used to run in the background with minimal resources being used. I hope Sophos can get the issue resolved ASAP for Mountain Lion.

  • Macbook sluggush / freezes after Mountain Lion

I bought my Macbook Pro 13" in late Fall of 2010.
I've read several posts on here about computers locking up after Mountain Lion upgrade.  But most of those issues involved the computer completely locking up.  In my case I get the spinning wheel of death, but the trackpad is still responsive.  I can "Force Quit" the open programs (usually) but it is very sluggish.  It boots slow and shuts down really slowly.  The sluggishness is intermitent thought and I can't put my finger on what is happening.  It reminds me of my old PC days when you would get a virus.
Can you point me in the right direction for diagnosis that I can run myself?
Or do I need to head to the Genius bar?
What has changed in my usage lately?
Essentailly the same type of usage since I purchased the machine.  Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator, Chrome, Safari and Mail.
I recently "upgraded" to Mountain Lion from the app store a few days after it became available.
To my knowledge, all updates have been installed.
My Macbook has been running really hot (too hot to sit directly on your lap when wearing shots).  This happened prior to my upgrade and I took it to the Apple store and they essentially told me not to worry about it.  They ran some tests and said things looked fine.
    Thanks!
