Istock? Other choices for images?

Looking for images for my projects. Someone suggested iStock but it seems a bit pricey. Any other options less pricey or free? If I do a google search and download an image won't it be too low res for the project?
I'm working on a project with only photos so i want to use different images of photo albums. iStock has some great choices but they're $7 a piece http://www.istockphoto.com/file_search.php?action=Browse&Cache=3dc5382c40957ae548f70cb335 fd0828&page=3

iStock seems pricey? It's only a few dollars apiece for excellent pictures!
Here's another excellent site.

These are all free, though there's not a large collection.

  • Any other choices for communication with web cam

    Hi all,
I have wrote a JMF program that takes the images from webcam. However, it really depends on lighting. When lighting is not enough, my whole application hangs. In fact, I have installed the software provided together with my webcam, it works pretty good nomatter how dark it is. Therefore, I really hope you guys can share some experiences to me, or are there any choices, such as, C, C++, etc, that allows me to capture the images from webcam continously. I am tired about java JMF. Thx a lot.

To communicate with web cam, you can avoid JMF using the JavaTwain package http://www.gnome.sk
This package enables you to connect to your camera or scanner directly from a java application.
If you just want to see how Java Twain works with your scanner or camera:
    - java (1.2 or higher for Windows, 1.3 or higher for Mac OS X) has to be installed on your computer
    - a scanner or camera has to be installed on your computer
    - download the trial package from http://www.gnome.sk
    - unzipp it
    - go to the examples directory of the unzipped package
    - in Windows: doubleclick the runExampleShow.bat
    - in MacOS:
        - open the Terminal window
        - change the working directory to the examples
        - run .sh file (type ExampleShow.sh or sh ExampleShow.sh)
This will pop up the Twain Source Selection user interface. There, all your scanners and cameras which do have a twain driver should be listed. (About 90% of scanners and cameras on the market do have a twain driver for Windows, only a few do have a twain driver for MacOS.) Select one of them. The user interface of the selected scanner (camera) will appear. Confirm the scanning (you can set the scanning parameters first). The scanned image will be displayed in a separate window. To end the application, close that window.
Running different examples, you can test scanning with hidden UI, saving the scanned image, using ADF, ...
If there is any problem, do not hesitate to inquire about it at the technical support, email: [email protected] . I am the member of the staff :)

  • Why upper or lower case choices for image file extensions?

Thanks ahead of time for any help.
I'm wondering why you would want the file extension in lower or upper case.   Is there a reason to choose one or the other in various situations?  This choice is an option in the import dialog window box under File Renaming> Extensions with choices of Leave as-is, Lowercase & Uppercase.

Really..."to provide more control for specific workflows"???  I've gotta say... if I'm wrong about UNIX systems and case-sensitive file extensions... it truly would seem senseless that there would be a setting for controlling the case of file extensions.  So far as I know, almost every major application omits such a feature.  For what type of workflow would you ever need to specify the file extension case, if not for a file system that uses case-sensitive file extensions?  I'm just curious, myself, actually...  Is there something I'm missing?
What about writing to legacy network storage where extensions are not accepted unless in a specific case.  I believe Netware used to enforce upper-case extensions at some point.  If you had a collection of legacy data or datastore and had some service or scripts that operating on them, and could not be easily changed, you might really want to control exactly how those filenames are created.
There are any number of paths one can go down where you can end up cursing an application because it cannot do a simple action, like write out a filename in the right case. Think of all the complaints found in these forums where someone has cited some odd use-case no one else could ever have imagined and then stated that it is obvious that Lr should accommodate this because it is so simple to fix (e.g., to do something like provide an option whereby extensions are made all upper- or lower-case.)
You do know that even Windows and OS X are case-preserving, right?  So, the actual case used to create the file is in the file metadata, regardless of what the Finder or Explorer or shell may decide to show you. How this metadata is used by various APIs is open-ended.

  • Best Choice for Image Managment

Hi. I am working on a web app based on struts with a mysql db.
My app will manage about 200 items a year, and will have few users online (DSS). Every item will have from 1 to 5 images that will be uplodaded from the frontend.
    My question is about efficiency.
What is the best, to store my images in the database and query them, or handle them as files.
    Thanks

It won't differ that much in performance (if you gently buffers the streams). The database finally stores it on disk, the same way as you store it as file. Rather look to maintainability and portability if you want to make considerations.

  • Any other choices except running several JDBC senders for collect DB data?

    Hi Experts,
One third party system running on Oracle DB, need to send data to SAP, it only provides staging tables for communication.
Third party system wants to transfer data to SAP, system will insert necessary data into TRANSFER OUT tables. The Insert Trigger inserts a record into the Central Send Table and sets the message status (field: msg_status) to ‘N’ to indicate that a new message has been inserted.
Currently we are in design phase. We have about 15 interfaces like above described to use JDBC Sender adapter to delivery message. For every interface about 1000 messages/day, message size will be 10-20k.
    The question is:
    1.Does this design is feasible?
2.Will 15 JDBC Senders impact XI performance?
3.How many interval time should be setup in every JDBC Sender adapter to make sure XI can survive.
4.If this is a bad design, do we have other choices?
Thank you very much for your time.

    Hi,
    ><i>Does BPM process message one by one?</i>
As sequential processing is not a necessity in your case, every message picked by the Sender JDBC adapter will trigger a separate BPM and so parallel processing will surely happen. Just make the Quality of Service in your Sender JDBC adapter as <b>Exactly Once.</b>
But again now the question arises as to how many parallel BPM's are going to run. If the number is small, then there should be no issue at all.
Look into this blog and understand how BPM performance can be fine tuned. Have not tried the steps / tricks mentioned here regarding Transaction handling but it sure would help,
    /people/swen.conrad/blog/2006/12/22/xi-ccbpm-performance-under-perform-or-out-perform
Meanwhile, before considering the BPM and single Sender JDBC adapter I would suggets that you still work on multiple Sender JDBC adapters with the Availability Times concept and hardware quicksized , see the results and then decide on the BPM stratergy.
Multiple Sender JDBC adapters provide ease of development , and manintenance and so if hardware is quicksized and adapter scheduling possible, this should be the approach.

  • Skip logic not functioning for "Other" choice

I have just noticed a possible bug: I have a multiple selection field and I opt to "include 'other' choice" in the field options.  So now I have my list of options, plus an "Other" option that requires the user to fill in a text box to specify what "other" means.  Later on, when I try to apply skip logic to the "Other" choice, the skip logic doesn't seem to work--the "other" option isn't triggering the skip logic.  I'll attach a screenshot of the skip logic to demonstrate that it's set up correctly (to the best of my knowledge):
I'm in Chrome and I've tried this with "Other" as the only criteria and also with "Other" plus additional responses options as criteria in an "if any" logic setup.  The additional options trigger the skip logic correctly, but if "Other" is the only selection, it doesn't seem to work for me.
Thanks for any advice or input!

  • Wrong choice for a monitor?

Hi... just bought a samsung lcd tv monitor to hook up to my macbook pro, but I can't get good resolution for graphic design. selected highest res possible in s system preferences, but still sucky. Is it not a good choice for a  graphics monitor?

TV monitors are usually never good for graphic design because they are designed to be viewed from across the room where the pixels merge when being viewed for a distance. So they tend to have bigger pixels and spaced more apart than computer monitors.
Up close requires a higher pixel count per sq inch. So a 17" MacBook Pro has a like 1080i screen up close within a couple of feet as a 50" HD TV has the same at 20 feet.
Since TV content is max at 1080i for 1980 x 1000 pixel count,  there is no need to make it bigger for up close and computer use.
Graphic monitors of that larger caliper have something like 3000 x 2000 pixel resolution at 30 and 40" sizes to get the fine detail and less blurry type and images.
If your looking for a larger screen for graphic design, I don't recommend Apple's glossy screens at all, look for a professional anti-glare high res models online.
Apple has been slowly exiting certain markets that depended upon it's hardware in favor of serving only the consumer markets for gizmos.
I fully expect the MacPro to go the way of the XServer in the coming years as demand slacks off for their "Pro" products.
Apple is already introducing only integrated graphics in their "Pro" line of laptops and ineffective for serious professional use glossy displays.

  • Is unlocked iphone 3gs a good choice for use in the UK with PAYG?

I've never had a smartphone. I'm thinking of buying the unlocked iphone 3gs to use when I'm in the UK 2-3 (months a year). I would be using a pay as you go sim with a little data use included. All I need is the ability to call, text, email, blog, and check facebook. Would this phone be a good choice for me. I'm hearing that there are some problems with battery life on the iphone 4. Does the 3gs have those issues? Also what does the 's' stand for?
    Any helpful info apppreciated.

This is the deal I'm looking at. As you can see it comes with the upated OS. $375. Is already a bit more than I would normally spend on a phone.

  • If I use Sys Update 4, will I have choices for ThkVan tool install?

    All,
I own an X61t 7764CTO tablet and recently did a clean install of [retail]Win7 64-bit Pro. I'm really happy with the speedy boot times and overall snappy performance with this 4Gig machine. It was supplied with Vista Biz 32-bit in Aug 2008 and I rarely used the ThinkVantage toolset. So going forward I plan to run System Update 4 - *IF* I will be given the opportunity to choose the ThinkVantage modules I want.
I'd like to end up with:
-Fingerprint reader active as log-on device
-Power management that allows full screen brightness even if not plugged in (currently not possible)
I plan to have Windows continue to manage:
-wireless connections, sound, backup images/system restore creation.
    Undecided about:
-hard drive instant headparking (protection). I have a Seagate 7200.4 Momentus drive I put in a while ago. I don't really know for sure that such protection is enabled with this larger, newer drive in the laptop.
    Wondering about:
-return of bezel button functionality for
     =screen rotation
     =four-way rocker
     ="escape key" button
Other modules for migration and data security are not important in my small business.
So, are these offered as CHOICES or does SysUpdate run all the tools into the machine?
Is the alternative going piecemeal through the driver download page for the x61t and picking off those few drivers/programs that address these issues by name? There may be deeper, more subtle, changes and routines introduced back into the machine by SysUpdate 4 that I would want to have... or perhaps slowdowns, too.
I hope other users here can offer advice. I did a lot of reading and searching before posting -- the granularity of the SysUpdate (4) process is not described on any page I was able to find. I am really happy with the Win 7 upgrade, though!
    Thanks in advance,

    Hello,
When you run the ThinkVantage System Update software you will have the choice of installing, just downloading or not downloading a particular update.

  • Best Azure Data Center choice for serving content in Canada?

    Hello,
Curious - What is the best Data Center choice for a CDN if your primary audience is in Canada?  (or does it even matter?)
I've asked Azure support if a data center will be opening up in Canada, and it appears that there are no plans for such.  So, if we are serving [primarily images] via Azure Storage (CDN) -- what is the best choice for a data center; as all traffic will
    be heading North (to Canada)?
Also -- does anyone know of a SIMPLE price comparison chart that shows the cost of all the major CDNs, i.e.: Azure, S3, Google, etc. with regard to storage costs and bandwidth costs?  (Might be an interesting project to build)
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
As of now, there is no plan to open a Data center in Canada. However, depending on the location you are in Canada, you may choose East US2/EastUS or West US or North Central US DataCenter which ever is near by to you.
You may check the price of your services hosted in Azure through following link:

  • Servlets a good choice for such a game?

    Hi,
I'd like to write a game like darkgalaxy ( www.darkgalaxy.com)
    Here is a screenshot
    http://images.darkgalaxy.com/home/screenshots/7.jpg
The game has no animations. It uses a simple web interface and is turn based.
So it shouldn't be too difficult to write something similar.
I just wondered if servlets are a good choice for that or if php is more suited. I have virtually no experience with php therefore I'm not sure. php does have the advantage of running on nearly every webserver but then again the project is not that small and the code should be easily extendable and reusable for other similar games.
    thanks

Your first decision has already been made: a browser will be your client.
After that decision, it really boils down to what you are most comfortable with. I would say that as the complexity of your application grows the appeal of objects will increase as well. In any case, any server that can have Java installed (which just about any web hosting or co-location company would provide already) can run Servlets. There should be no compatibility issues there.

  • I am trying to fresh install Mavericks (it gives me no other choice) on my erased MacBook Pro HD prior to selling on. It does not give me choice to use any other OS. Yet Mavericks is not available. ?? What to do please?

I wish to sell my 2008 MacBook Pro. Have erased hard disk and when I went to fresh instal Mavericks OSX 10.6 (it gives me no other choice in the disk utility program) It says in the Apple Store, it is unavailable. But because this is done from disk utility there is no operating system or access to choose another OS eg Yosemite.  I cannot download anything using my iMac as that came ready loaded with Yosemite, so it does not show as a purchase. I do not want to use the Time Machine backup as that has all my details, apps etc. in it.    Would the best way be to purchase a disk containing Mavericks the OS that was on it most recently. Can anyone offer advice please?

You need to re-install the OS the computer shipped with using the disks that were supplied with the computer. Contact Apple Support and have the serial number of your computer available. They will send you new disks for a small fee.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite: New Choices for Customers

Adobe has announced the new Cloud-based model for software distribution, along with new terms for boxed product upgrade eligibility. Beginning with the CS6 releases, when they happen, upgrade pricing on boxed products will only be availble one generation back. There is a limited window to upgrade now to the current versions at a discount.
    See http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/adobe-creative-cloud-and-adobe-creative-suite -new-choices-for-customers.html

    Eugene:
Based on the current information we have (from the blog post), which may not be correct and which you should not rely upon:
There is some confusion about the word "discount." As used in the blog post, in general there are no "discounts" for upgrades, there is the upgrade price and there is full price. But, also in the blog post, there is a special "discount upgrade" if you choose to upgrade to CS5.5 today (prior to Dec. 31, 2011), which is 20% off the regular upgrade. However, Peter used the word "discount" to distinguish between upgrade pricing and full price. It's probably a good idea to avoid using that word there because of the potential for confusion.
I have CS5 InDesign in work. So I will be able to upgrade that to CS6 when it comes out at the discount price?
You will be able to upgrade to CS6 at upgrade pricing. Not the 20% discount, but it is "discounted" from the full price of CS6.
I'm still using CS2 Illustrator and Photoshop, for the little work I do in those programs, they're fine. But if I want to upgrade them to CS6 I have to pay the full amount of an upgrade, with no discount... or will I have to pay for CS6 in full for both of these programs?
You will have to pay the full price (not the "full amount of an upgrade," whatever that means).
If you elect to upgrade to CS5.5 prior to Dec. 31 of this year, however, then then you can pay the discounted upgrade price to upgrade to CS5.5 (well, CS5 since Photoshop CS5.5 doesn't exist), and then you can pay the CS6 upgrade price in March/April. So you can pay for no upgrades (full price) or two upgrades (one of which is 20% off).
At the moment I can upgrade CS2, photoshop and Illustrator for €240 each, to CS5. So wouldn't I just be able to do that now and then buy the CS6 upgrade at a much later date perhaps just before CS7 comes out?
    Yes, you can do that.
If CS6 has the tools to basically go "File>Export>Epub" and I get a fully working epub file without having to trash about in code afterwards or make complex tagging in InDesign, then I'll be buying it.
It looks like EPUB is evolving pretty fast, so even if ID CS6 fully supports what you want out of EPUB on Day 1, I bet you'll need to be prepared to postprocess it on Day 2. Or at least long before Day 200.

  • Relative paths for images upset by forwarding requests

    Hello World.
I am using a web app deployed in Weblogic 5.1 with service pack 8.
I have hit a problem which puzzles me. When I forward a request from
one JSP to another (say from A to B) the web server seems to take the
URLs of the images on the served file (B) relative to the path on the
              calling file (A). Here's a detailed explanation...
Suppose I have a the web app structured as follow
              /oddApp/launch/A.jsp
              /oddApp/B.jsp
              /oddApp/images/tick.gif
Page A simply stores its request URI and forwards its request to page B
              <jsp:forward page="/B.jsp" />
Page B displays its requestURI, contextPath and servletPath. It also
              attempts
              to show three images
              <img src="images/tick.gif">
              <img src="../images/tick.gif">
              <img src="/images/tick.gif">
When I invoke page B directly, the first image is shown, the others are not.
When I invoke page A, it forwards to B and the second image is shown, the
              others are not.
In each case the URI, contextPath and servletPath are correctly displayed
              with regard to page B.
              URI = [oddApp/B.jsp]
              contextPath = [oddApp]
              servletPath = [B.jsp]
The URI in A.jsp is also correct (i.e. /oddApp/launch/A.jsp).
The search for the images seems to be relative to the original URI (i.e. not
the URI used to forward), which strikes me as daft. It means that page B
must be aware of where it is being called from. It is perfectly plausible
              that
relative paths which suit when called from one location are incorrect when
              called from another.
I had thought that including the leadling slash (as shown as the third
              image)
would cause the search relative to the document root (/oddApp/), but this
appears not to be the case. The search is done relative to the root of the
              server not the web app.
Adding jsp mappings in the deployment descriptor of the web app does not
help (I had thought it a long shot anyway).
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
              PHiL

i face the same problem (WinNT, WLS6.0): my wep app has a contextRoot " root " which makes it react to the URL: http://host:port/root /: it is this folder which will be used as a basis by the Web server But in the jps I use a relative URL for images: / images/toto.gif : it works very well when I deploy my jsp out of a Web-app by setting a document.root to the weblogic web server. On the other hand, once deployed in a Web-app, images are not found because the default path of the browser is http://host:port, without the context root of the Web-app! In other words, my war has images/*.gif in its root but when /images/toto.gif is resolved in a jsp, as the relative URL is not prefixed by my context-root, the image is not search in the war! actually, if I type http://host:port/root/toto.gif, my image appearsany clues? an alias on the web server? a setting in web.xml/application.xml and their weblogic equivalent files?

  • Fixing the path for images in RoboHelp 8

I am rather new to Robohelp, so please forgive me if this has been addressed in another dicussion...I have been searching and cannot seem to find what I am looking to describe.
I am working in Robohelp 8, and  creating a new help system by importing topics from a previous help system. The problem I am running into and I cannot see how to fix is that there are a couple of topics that have images where instead of the path for the image directed to a folder called "Images" in the main directory, it dumps the graphic into the project manager window when I import the topic. I tried viewing topics that don't have their images on the main project manager window, and comparing against the one that does, and I cannot see the difference. I have tried renaming the images and placing in the correct folders, and then inserting the images into the topics, but it still tries to look at the main folder and still dumps the image into the project manager.
Any help you can provide please share.

I am going to say yes (because it sounds like what I am trying to get at, but not sure).....I have tried deleting the images, and recreating, and then re-inserting into the topic, and they still go to the root of project. As I am going along, I am finding more and more.....so far there are 20 images that are doing this.  However, I also just did what you mentioned and dragged it and put it under the topic. But I am still confused as to why I would need to do this for some topics and for other topics the images don't appear at all (meaning they don't show under topics or root of project), they are just linked through the folder on the main directory. Does this image help more?
Left of picture above: The folder directory has a folder called Images, and this is where all of the images were stored and are stored for the new project.
Middle of picture above: The topic Horizontal Command had an image in it "image20.gif", and it was at the root directory and as you suggested I moved to the topic. Also see the topic circled Expand and Collapse Folders topic has the image circled at the left within it.
What I am trying to understand is why would the graphic from the Horizontal command topic dump into the root of the project, while the image from the Expand and Collapse Folders topic not show on the root project or even within the topic listed. (Which is what I prefer for all topics).
