!!! isync just wiped out my address book!!!

I was working on my address book and suddenly it was completely deleted except for my email address and the Apple computer. I went online to find the my .mac address book and I found it was also empty. I went to my office computer to restore the .mac account with iSync. After some time iSync asked me if I wanted to delete all 788 files on my computer! But it did want to add those two files! I declined of course. What is strange is that it should have added all those 788 files back to .mac. What gives? Any clues!!!

Ok, I found a clue at Message « Refreshing contact groups and calendar information... » in the forum and finally resolved the problem. See the thread for the solution. The clue was to "reset sync data". See details for how to do this and how to deal with the "grayed out" button.

  • Palm Treo 650 Sync wiped out my address book--HELP!!

Got a replacement Treo 650; went to do my first hard sync. Not only did calendar not port over, but it completely wiped out my entire address book (except for two records created yesterday). Freaked out!! All my iSync settings are the same as previous and have always worked. What to do? Thankfully I still have my old Treo 650 with address book intact, but no one seems able to tell me how to reverse port that address book to my MacBook Pro.
    Pul-eeze someone help me!

This was likely caused by introducing an 'empty' Treo into your synchronization framework with the same HotSync name and without having reset the framework before doing so. The framework properly recognized the new devices as the old—but now empty—device, and removed all of the records from iCal and the Address Book as it should have.
Simply backing up both databases using the built in facility to do so, or assigning a new HotSync name to the replacement device would have either allowed you to immediately recover from this unforeseen consequence, or to have avoided it entirely.
Before you do anything else, you should read this document so that you understand how the synchronization framework operates.
Then, reset the framework by launching iSync, opening the Preferences… pane, and pressing the Reset Sync History… button. This will leave your sync clients registered and your data—such as it is at this point—intact, and set the truth database to appear as if you have never synchronized at all. When you attach your identically named original device, be sure that you choose to Merge data with your computer and not to Replace the data on it.
Once you have merged the data, open iCal and the Address Book and make any changes that you wish to to your data, then pause to back each database up using the built-in option in each application to do so. Synchronize once again, and you changes will not only have been backed up, but distributed across your synchronization pool.

  • Has FaceTime wiped out your address book?

Two weeks ago in Malta I was using FaceTime without a problem when suddenly it cut out.  my contacts/address book was wiped out.  Not sure which happened first or both the same time.
As I use MobileMe everything was restored from the cloud after a few minutes.  Back home I had no trouble with MobileMe.
I thought it was chance but today I used MobileMe again, this time in Tunisia and the same thing happened again.  I had been about to go out but had to wait with an Internet connection to re sync with the cloud which was very annoying.
anyone know why this happens away from home and any idea how to stop this happening again?

  • TS1363 ITunes just wiped out most of the books on my iPod, How do I get it all back on?

ITunes just wiped out most of the books on my iPod, saying device (the same one I've been using for several years) is not authorized. This seems to be a response to getting a new computer and authorizing it (while deauthorizing the five I had authorized). Device authorization in Files does not all authorization (it's pale).
How do I reload on to iPod? It's all on the computer.

Do you load content on the iPod manually (by dragging items to the iPod in iTunes), or do you have automatic sycning set up?
If it's automatic syncing, you need to select the iPod in iTunes.  There is a row of buttons starting with Summary.  Click on Books there.  This Books screen is where you tell iTunes how to sync audiobooks to the iPod.  Set that up and click Apply.
If you load content manually, just drag the audiobooks you want from the iTunes Books library to your iPod in iTunes.

  • Can't sync just one "Group" within  Address Book anymore!

Is anyone else having a problem like this or is it specific to me:
iSync no longer offers me the option of selecting a specific Group within my Address book, for syncing with my Moto RAZR V3 phone. The only option is to sync "All Contacts" -- but my Address Book exceeds the capacity of my phone's memory. As a result, my most recent sync attempt wiped out my entire phonebook on the RAZR and I am unable to restore it with iSync.
What happened to the ability to select a specific Group for syncing? Is this a "bug" or a new "feature" of the post-MobileMe era?

That ability is definitely still there - although I have seen iSync forget to show custom Groups before.
First, make a backup of your Address Book and iCal data by using the relevant command on the File menu in each app.
Then try backing up then deleting the SyncServices folder found in ~/Library/Application Support/
Restart the Mac, and re-load iSync. If that doesn't help some of the links below may do:

  • ISync deleted local copy of Address book?

    Hello,
I did a Sync today and afterward the local copy of my address book is gone. It is still on dot-Mac. Just not on this machine. How do I get my contects back on this machine?

It happened also to me, and I had support from Apple. You should reset the iSync information on your computer (advanced tab in the .Mac system preference) and choose the option of restoring everything from the .Mac database.
    Hope it helps

  • ISync does not properly retrieve address book data, links broken

    Hello,
My syncing attempts with my Motorola phone keep failing (no data is transmitted to the phone; the phone has no contacts currently). I think I can see the problem: iSync has different groups of contacts in its list than that exist in address book. What I mean is: in the dropdown menu in iSync where you can select what group of contacts to sync, it has the groups that I once had in address book, but which are now changed. I think this happened since I installed snowleopard. During my leopard days, I moved some apps to different folders; with the install of snowleopard, I think the links between the apps have not been reset well.
Do you know how to fix this?

The most likely solution is to launch iSync application ,and then in the preferences menu, click on Reset Sync History button. This resets configurations for the iTunes synchronization of calendars and address books.

  • I fixed my iSync Problem it now syncs Address book and iCal on 10.4.9

Ever since updating to the latest version of OS X 10.4.9 iSync didn't work anymore with my Sony Z520i.
Neither Address Book or iCal wouldn't sync at all and I tried everything even a fresh erase and Install.
Someone here on this forum told me to delete the folder SyncServices found in ~/library/Aplicatrion Support/SyncServices. I did that but it still didn't work so I replaced the same folder from the trash. I then launched iSync again, it did sync my address book only. I couldn't select the option for iCal in iSync anymore until I resynced my iCal in my Mac prefrences, after that I could select it in iSync but it would still fail.
So I deleted two files that belong to iCal located in ~/library/Aplication Support/iCal the two files are sync.plist and syncState.plist
When I tried it it worked perfectly iSync synced both address book and iCal and I have been testing it without any problems updating my address book and iCal for the last few days.
    It's 100% fixed :)

  • I just wiped out my ENTIRE Entourage calendar syncing it with iCal.  Help!

Hey there. I'm using Entourage 2004 and I foolishly decided to try syncing it with iCal using the Syncing pane in the Preferences Menu pictured below.
When I opened iCal to have it sync there was a dialogue with three choices and I chose the one that would have seemed to do the least damage. I can't remember now. The problem is, it wiped out my ENTIRE Entourage calendar. I didn't find this out until now when I brought the computer out of sleep. The last 4.5 years are gone. Absolutely nothing is there and the Office Notifications doesn't even start up.
Is there anyway to retrieve this at all? Can I rebuild the database or something? Anything? The kicker is iCal isn't even showing my dates from Entourage even though it started a new colour/calendar for it.
    Please help!

if your phone is still turned on. for example......they overcharge you by $300 one month and just reduce the credit you will have with them. now 2 months before your contract is up, your credit is gone (because they overcharged). you still think you have $300 credit with them.....until they shut your phone off for not paying the bill. probably won't happen, but i just thought i'd throw a scenario out there, as it is very common to have disputes on cell phone bills.

  • Mail does not send emails out of address book under Mavericks

Since I upgradet to Mavericks I cannot drag and drop addresses from the address book into mail to send them out. Anybody a solution or idea? Thank you!

  • HT2486 Must print out my Address Book

I need a hard copy of my Address Book.  I can print it as a list using just the name and email which is fine.   I choose File > Print.  Then I choose Lists from the Style pop-up menu, then click Print.   It prints the name/email as a two-column document.   Also, fine.   The problem is the column on the left is all crowded together with the name and email being printed one on top of another.   The column on the right is OK.  Below I've included the document as I am trying to print it (left) and on the right is how that first column is printing on top of itself.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

There is a bug with printing Contacts in ML. If you print from iCloud, I'm told it works.

  • Writing letters out of address book, crm

Hello, what I want to do:
Open a contact, click onto, choose "write letter" (and then automatically open a template in pages or word), after that connecting the letter to the contact card within address book or address database of certain program. I found this:
    http://www.jumsoft.com/relationship/
Wonderful software, but unfortunately it's impossible to write a letter right from the contact card. Does anybody know a solution?

The only way I can discover is:
    1. Select all your contacts.
    2. Select Print from the File menu.
    3. Set the first drop down menu to Address Book.
    4. Select List from the Style drop down menu.
    5. From the PDF drop down menu select Save as PDF.
    6. Name the file in the Save dialog, select a location to save the file, click on Save button.
Now find an application that will convert PDF to Text. There is a free item that installs as a Service that enables any Cocoa application such as TextEdit to import PDF files as Rich Text Format files: PDF2RTFService 1.1 - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Once converted to a text file you should then be able to set up the file by replacing spaces with tabs to create a Tab Delimited file you can import directly into Excel.
Or you could simply distribute the PDF output from AB and not go through the rest of the trouble to convert it.

  • Bridge just wiped out scores of folders and hundreds of photo files

Bridge CS3 (2.1.1.9) just did an absolutely terrible thing to me - so terrible that I fear ever to again use what I once thought was a great program.
I keep a blog (http://wasillaalaskaby300.squarespace.com/) and I was working on my latest entry. The blog is heavy on photos and so I had created an overall blog folder. Then, each day, I create a new folder with that day's date and put the photos that I plan to use into it.
In this case, I ran more photos, originally processed in Lightroom and then copied over as blog-sized jpgs, than I could use into today's folder, so I put in a subfolder for the ones that I would actually post.
Before posting the photos, I open them up directly out of Bridge into photoshop, from the daily folder, to put the final touches on them, then save them into the subfolder. I had processed seven photos and was about to begin on the eighth. I selected it in Bridge and then, because I also do so much work in lightroom, intead of clicking on the image icon to open it as I usually do, I inadvertently hit the "apple" "E" keys - just as I would in Lightroom.
The file did not open, but instead I got the spinning color wheel. I realized right away what I had done and so I paused to wait for the ball to quit spinning so that I could pick up where I left off.
But... when the ball quit spinning, all the photos in the folder disappeared. Bridge moved to another folder, one that showed all my hard drives. I then clicked the back arrow, and got a message that the folder that I had been working in could not be found.
In fact, the folder was GONE - along with all the files in it, and the subfolder. Worse yet, the main blog folder was also gone, along with every single daily folder and all the pictures that I had put into them.
None of this was in the trash. I had received no warning of any kind. I did separate searches for the folder and various items in it. It was all gone.
I do not know what happened. I do not know why the command to open a file out of Lightroom when inadvertantly used in Bridge would not only remove that file from the computer, but also the folder that it was in and every folder back to and including the root folder of the chain.
But however it happened, it is an outrageous feature.
And if by chance I inadvertantly hit "apple" "d" instead of "apple" "e", it should have deleted that file only, and even then I should have received a warning. I should have been able to find the deleted folder in the trash.
Worse yet, I do not really know if the deletions went beyond the blog folder and its contents.
    This is terrible.
    Bridge did this.

Glad your problem is solved but I still would like to respond.
Hitting the cmd+E key in Bridge is the command for eject and that is exactly what happened, Bridge (that is more like a browser for your files) ejected (or better, unmounted) the hard drive from your system and so you were not able to see it any more.
But you are also right that shortcuts can be tricky when they use different functions in different apps that are made by the same vendor. You could also send a Feature Request for this, you are not the first but the more that are asking for this the better it will be :-)
Further on I get the impression that you don't have a back up of your files? This is really necessary because there are a lot things that can happen using accidently keys or failing hard drives or you name it.
