Isync & PDA's

I have a 4 year old desktop G4. At the moment I am thinking to get a PDA where I can get calls and check my e-mail and maybe surf the web. I have asked around and several people recomend the Treo 650 or 700p. However, I also like the nokia E62 and others. I would like to know if any one know what smartphone syncs best with isync and therefor with Mac and all the applications such as calendar, contacts, pictures, etc. Can any one help me out?
Thank you very much, in advance
Pepe

  • What's the best PDA to use with iSync/Powerbook

My old sony clie finally died and I need to get a new PDA. Can anyone give me advice on the simplest PDA that is known to work well with a Mac platform? I had been using documents to go in order to hotsync my palm-based PDA in the past, but things may have changed.

    Powerbook G4 17   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have heard the same. Thanks to the link you referenced to me I know that I shouldn't need any further software to use a Palm device with iSync (unlike when I discovered that I needed Mark/Soft in order to sync my Clie). I am trying to decide between the basic Palm Z22 and the more advanced Palms. It would make a big difference if one could link directly from the iLife 06 suite to a Palm - it would make purchasing the fancy color screens on the more expensive Palms worth it to be able to carry around the family photo album.

  • Two Palm PDAs and iSync on one account - Synchronization not complete

I have set up two Palm devices with iSync on one account on my computer. It was my understanding that if I do a HotSync on each device with the Mac, all three devices should have the same information. I am finding that this is partially true. If I add information to a card in my contacts database on any device, that flows through. However, if I remove a card from the computer or either device, it does not flow through to the other devices or computer after I do a HotSync on each device.
What can be done to keep all devices fully synchronized?
    iMac (20in, Late 2006)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Changes are pulled from and pushed to various devices in your pool according to a 'plan' maintained by the truth database, and not all changes are necessarily passed around completely in a single session.
You can read this document to get an idea of how the Sync Services framework operates:
    http://developer.apple.com/macosx/syncservices.html
If a second and subsequent synchronization does not transfer the record modifications or deletions, you can reset the truth database by launching iSync, opening the Preferences… dialog, and pressing the Reset Sync History button, then following the instructions which appear and synchronizing once again.

  • What PDA best for iSync?

I'm going to ditch my old Treo600 and switch carriers to probably cingular because they have great coverage in my part of the country. Any suggestions?

Lets be brutally honest here, the Palm OS is done for in the medium term. I have moved over to a Nokia e61 running Series 60 3rd edition of Symbian. Nokia are tardy at supporting the Mac, but there are some very good people in Germany called Nova Media (www.novamedia.de) who do some first class conduits which I would recommend.
If you want to go down the Windows route, Mark/Space has support for Windows Mobile devices. A lot of people like their conduit software. I had big issues getting it to work with my previous Treo 650; so you pay your money and take your chance.
In addition, Apple natively supports a good number of devices that provide PDA functionality natively.

  • Bizarre iSync Hotsync PDA Problem

I have a palm Tungsten E2, second one. I had originally set up hotsync and iSync to perfectly synchronize using iCal, etc. instead of the palm desktop functions. My original E2 was stolen. After a month, I got a replacement, plugged it in and tried to sync. No go.
I have reinstalled the latest palm desktop today from the palm website. I deleted the device from the device list in iSync and started over with adding a new device. It finds my device and I enable Palm OS syncing. I go thru all the steps including the step where the conduits will be placed in the palm hotsync disabled conduits folder.
No matter how many times I restart and redo this process, I get the following problems: 1- my device comes up the the yellow warning sign in iSync indicating that I need to Enable Palm OS syncing again; 2- I get a message in the Hotsync Log "User * configured for Palm Address Book conduit and corresponding iSync data class, skipping iSync to avoid conflicting modifications 3/21/06 7:23:43 PM
iSync Conduit: Sending Error Response 6: User * configured for Palm Address Book conduit and corresponding iSync data class 3/21/06 7:23:46 PM
iSync Conduit: received NULL message, disconnecting... 3/21/06 7:23:46 PM"
I cannot figure out what to try next. Any suggestions?
    Sherry

This could be a permissions issue - I had to change the permssions on the 3 folders even though I run Tiger
    try this-
    [From the palm site]
Palm Desktop Installer Access Denied error after iSync 1.2 Palm Conduit has been installed.
You may receive the following error during installation or re-installation of Palm Desktop if you have installed the iSync 1.2 Palm Conduit for Mac OS X:
"Sorry, the operation could not be completed due to a System error. (Access Denied.)"
Explanation: the iSync 1.2 Palm Conduit installer changes the ownership and permission settings of some Palm folders to Read Only. The Palm Desktop Installer requires these folders have Read & Write access.
Workaround: A user with Administrator privileges (usually the primary user under Mac OS X) must change these privileges prior to running the Palm Desktop installer.
Perform one of the following procedures to change the affected folder privileges:
    Mac OS X 10.2.x and 10.3.x
    1. Download and install the latest version of Palm Desktop for Macintosh from the Palm support website, here: http://www.palm.com/us/support/macintosh/mac_desktop.html
Alternatively, if you need to reinstall your software from the original CD you must perform the following procedure.
In the Finder, select the "/Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync" folder. Note that this is the Library folder at the ‘root' level of your hard drive, not the Library folder in your user Home folder.
Select "Get Info" from the File menu.
Select the lock icon next to the "Owner" name to unlock it.
Select the Owner menu and select your username (or a user with Admin privileges). You may be asked to enter your password at this time.
Change the Owner's Access to "Read & Write"
Select the "Group" name and change it to "Admin"
Change the Group's Access to "Read & Write"
Repeat steps 2 through 8 for the following two folders:
    "/Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync/Conduits"
    "/Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync/Disabled Conduits"

  • Best PDA/SmartPhone for Macs (iSync)?

I love BlackBerrys and have had quite a few. Right now I'm on the BB 8800, but recently I have been trying to sync simple--though lengthy, around 1500-3000--word documents (not attatchments, just copy and paste) using both the Stickies app (which only seems to be able to hold just less than 1500 words per stickie) as well as PocketMac with Entourage (which results in the title of the note appearing in the memos section of my BlackBerry, however when I open it there is no text at all, even when everything appears on Entourage.
So, if you can't help me with that issue above, I'd really appreciate it, but if not, WHICH SMARTPHONE IS MOST COMPATABLE, RELIABLE, EASY TO USE WITH MACS? (similar to the blackberry 8800 would be convenient, but not necessary) And please, I know the iPhone is obviously the best but that is not available yet. So, please HELP!

    thanks for the (not) help!

  • Can I use iSync for more than one user on my .mac family account?

I just got a new MacBook Pro 17" to replace my Pro 15", which I want to give to my hubby who's using an old MacBook. I have successfully synched my old Pro to the cloud and my new Pro, thereby rolling over all my settings, widgets, address book, etc. But now I want to roll-over my husband's settings from the MacBook to the old 15" Pro. I'm afraid if I just perform a sync, MY settings out there in the cloud will overwrite his. What's the proper procedure to follow here? He's got a lot of passwords and really wants his bookmarks saved to the 15" MacBook Pro-- that's the most important info he wants to maintain. Recommendations?

iSync is for syncing mobile phones and PDAs - it has nothing to do with syncing between Macs.
You post your question in one of the more relevant MobileMe forums.

  • Looking for a new PDA/Phone

I'm looking for a new PDA/Phone that is iSync 2.4 compatible for my new AT&T account. I will switch to iPhone early in the new year but need a PDA/Phone now. Appantly AT&T is out of Nokia PDAs' at the moment.

But I can not find a list of compatible devices under 10.6 . Only a 10.5 device list is online.
The 10.6 iSync Compatible devices list is still up-to-date except for the references to Palm devices. Apple has not added any new devices to iSync since Leopard was released in October 2007.
Mobile me and other work arounds are also not an option for me , as I travel allot and the international data roaming charges would easily exceed the price of the iPhone within one month.
MobileMe works over WiFi too, so you could just turn off 3G/GPRS data whilst roaming and sync when connected via WiFi.
So, I am looking for a good / small / stable pda/phone with a good keyboard that can sync Ical / and address book over bluetooth.
Do you mean a you want a physical QWERTY keyboard? That's going to limit your choices considerably, and any Windows Mobile or Blackberry devices will need third-party software to sync with a Mac. Palm's WebOS is not yet syncable with a Mac except for going via Google over-the-air, and the same is true with Android devices.
There are hundreds of Nokia & Sony Ericsson phones that sync via Bluetooth and have POP3/IMAP email clients, but almost all don't have a QWERTY keyboard.
Also, unless you buy the phone unlocked, you'll be even more limited by what your network provider offers.

  • Entourage 2008 and iSync

Hey everyone, I was using the new Entourage 2008 and loved it, until I realized it was going to take A LOT of work to get it to sync with my Palm Centro. I ended up switching back to Entourage 2004 which is really starting to tick me off. Here's what I would like to be able to do, and you all may be able to tell me if this is indeed feasible or not.
    1. I would like to be able to sync my Centro (contacts, calendar, to-dos, notes, etc.) with Entourage, consequently I would like to be able to go both ways. So say I create an event in Entourage and then change the time of the event on the Centro, I would like that to be reflected on both the computer and Centro.
    2. I would like to be able to sync my contacts and calendar on MobileMe (I'm not sure how that system works, but for now I would just like to be able to view my calendar online).
    3. Eventually I'd like to sync the whole deal with like Google Calendars and stuff.
Entourage 2004 was SO easy to sync my Centro. I tried to sync with 2008 and it just made a bunch of duplicates and caused me a headache. After realizing that Microsoft wasn't going to be able to help me, I switched back to 2004. What a bummer, because the new 2008 is AWESOME!
Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I've been looking online and on forums for weeks now and haven't really found a solid answer.

Wow, really? Why would Apple do that?
Because iSync's Palm support was severely out of date, didn't work very well, and, I guess it wouldn't be worth Apple's time and money to devote development resources to it further.
What exactly does the Missing Sync program do for me?
It'll basically sync everything between your Mac and Palm - contacts, calendars, notes, tasks, memos, install Palm OS applications and conduits, sync music, photos and videos. Far more than iSync ever did.

Is there a better PDA to use with Mac OS X then?
iPhone is the best since Apple makes everything from the phone to the OS. It just works.
Are any of those going to work better than the Palm OS?
I don't know whether any of them will work better, but they all need third-party software from MarkSpace to sync with a Mac. None sync out-of-the-box.

  • Is iSync what I need?

I would like to keep my desktop and laptop computer mirroring each other so I can work on the go or at my office without having outdated versions of files in one computer, having to transfer update files manually and risking loosing information or work already done. Would iSync solve this problem for me? it seems that people use it mostly to sync their iPods and iPhones with their computers... ?
    Thanks in advance

iSync is for syncing Contact and Calendars to third party mobile phones and PDAs - it does not do any Mac-to-Mac syncing nor does it sync iPhones or iPods.
You'll need some third-party software to keep general files in sync. Google for ChronoSync which might do what you want.

  • ISync & Palm Treo failure

    Hi folks,
Was a fairly happy user of iBook g4 OS 10.3.9 and Palm Treo 650 until sync'ing failed sometime last month. I had been using iSync to sync PDA contacts with Address Book, PDA calendar with iCal, and PDA Tasks with iCal as well (didn't realize that Memos sync with nothing, they are lost forever apparently). In late February I downloaded the Palm daylite savings time patch, seemingly successfully. Gotta wonder whether DST or the patch caused all this, huh? Anyway, I suffered a complete failure of my Palm Treo during a hotsync in March. It got stuck in a hotsync-reset loop. I had to do a hard reset. Of course, that wiped out everything on it. I tried to do a hotsync to reload everything, but hotsync process fails midway through. So I restored my Palm with BackupPro (I made backups way too infrequently, last one was months ago). Been reloading software (mostly medical stuff) ever since and slowly getting it to work.
BUT, it is still crashing during hotsync unless I deactivate the iSync conduit. Specifically, the iBook and Treo sync the install files successfully, then it starts iSync stuff, successfully sync's the AddressBook-Contacts, then tries to sync the calendar-iCal stuff. It tries, it tries, it waits, then the Treo resets itself while the iBook keeps trying to reset. When I finally cancel the failed hotsync, I get this error report in the hotsync log:
iSync Conduit starting 4/12/07 10:51:14 PM

I tried another hotsync, here's the log, this time from iSync itself:

Can anyone suggest what is going wrong? I have some pretty important data trapped now in iCal calendar and To-Do list while my Treo's calendar and tasks remain empty. I am using OS 10.3.9, iSync 1.5, iSync Palm conduit package 1.2 (if I'm listing that last item correctly).

With regard to memos: when the iSync Palm Conduit is installed, the script deactivates the Memo Conduit and Memos Conduit. You can reactivate them by dragging them from the Disabled Conduits folder back into the active Conduits Folder. Both are found here:
    Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:Palm HotSync
The installation process does not delete them from the Palm Desktop. They remain there, but are not updated unless and until you reactivate the conduits.
With regard to the iSync error: Warning: couldn't get record 338 for database DatebookDB, skipping the rest of the database
That error indicates that the corrupted record resides on your Palm device, and not in iCal. To correct that problem, you should remove your device from iSync, add it back again using the Enable Palm OS Syncing… option and choose to Replace the records on your Palm device, rather than Merge items with them.

  • Isync conduit/adobe reader for palm issue

I just got a Tunsten E2 for Christmas. I'm somewhat new to this PDA world, so perhaps I'm missing something obvious. I installed the software, installed Adobe Reader for Palm OS and performed a HotSync. I then tried importing a PDF file to my handheld with no trouble. Then I saw via the Palm website that I could sync using isync via the isync conduit 1.2 from apple. So I downloaded that and followed the instructions to install it. Now my addresses and calendars sync flawlessly, but I can't seem to get Adobe Reader for Palm to transfer any more PDF files.
Has the isync conduit disabled a conduit for Adobe? Is there any way to fix this? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    J
P.S. I'm using Hotsync manager 3.2.1 and Palm Desktop 4.2.1

    Michael,
I've figured out what the problem is. When you install the isync conduit it removes any conduits that it feels it conflicts with. i.e. contacts, calendars, to do lists etc. It also, for some reason, removed the Adobe conduit named AcroConduit. I think this is a glitch in the isync conduit. Thankfully, the conflicting conduits that isync removes aren't deleted. They are simply put into a folder named "disabled conduits" located in the main "library" folder->"Application Support" -> "Palm HotSync", right next to the "Conduits" folder. So I just dragged the AcroConduit back to the "Conduits" folder and configured the conduit in HotSync Manager and, viola, all seems to be working fine... sort of.
It seems that Apple's Address Book and iCal don't exactly sync picture perfect on the palm pilot. email addresses where phone numbers should be, some addresses not showing up at all, calendars not showing up in the correct headings such as personal, business, etc. Apple and Palm could do better.

  • PDA Usage

I had a quick question about what PDA's work with iSync. Do the new dell pda's work the x51 series. And if anyone can recommend a good pda, that would be great.. thanks

To the best of my knowledge, only two USB to serial adapters have ever worked properly in this application: the now defunct and no longer available PalmConnect kit, and the Keyspan USB serial adapter. Unless they've recently 'changed the script' at their support center, Palm representatives are recommending that users purchase the Keyspan unit linked below. I would be curious to know if they are now recommending another device instead.
Many messages have been posted here and on the Palm support forum regarding communications problems which cropped up with other serial adapters, and the consensus is that the Keyspan is the only one which works reliably and is adequately supported—or supported at all—by both the manufacturer and by Palm.
For reference, this is the specific Keyspan product that you want to use:

  • What's the smallest, coolest phone that syncs reliably over BT with iSync?

I've been using a Treo 600 & 650 for the last several years. I've been very pleased with it, and it syncs reliably to Address Book and iCal. I'm now out of contract with Sprint and can change carriers if I wish. I don't really need the larger PDA phone and would consider something smaller that syncs reliably over BT with iSync?
    Any recommendations?
    QB12

    1) Some revisions of motorola phones have a problem over BT so if you have on of these revisions you will have to use USB
    2) On Motorola phone, one contact is one phone number (it's Motorola's out-dated database, you can't change it). However, Motorola is aware of this problem so it included a way in the phone's Address Book settings to "coalesce" phone numbers that have the same contact name.

  • Bluetooth-PDA-Sync port in use

Hi, I can't seem to edit or delete the Bluetooth-PDA-Sync. It says the port is in use, but I'm not sure what is using it. I have my Palm Hotsync manager disabled, and it is not selected in Network Preferences either. I did mess with Share2Blue2th before and used Terminal to type in some sudo commands. But I've reset the computer and don't believe any ports are in use. Is there some preferences I can scrap to make the Bluetooth-PDA-Sync available again? I'm trying to fiddle with it to sync my Treo over Bluetooth, but it won't let me edit anything in it because it says the port is in use.

This did not work for me. The only change that resetting the Treo 650 has done is to make the error message, "Unable to initiate...," appear more quickly.
I have two other problems related to making my new phone work with iSync. Apple says "From the Devices menu, choose Enable Palm OS Syncing." There is no such option under the Devices menu.
    Further, Apple says this:
From the HotSync menu, choose Conduit Settings.
In the Conduit Settings window, double-click iSync Conduit, then select the "Enable iSync for this Palm device" checkbox.
But of the things enumerated under the Conduit Settings, "Enable iSynce for this Palm device" is not one of them.
I am using OS 10.4.4; iSync version 2.1.1; Palm desktop version 4.2.1
These are all the latest. Bluetooth pairs with the device and my phone can 'see' my computer, so this is not the problem.
I hate to give up on this phone and this capability. I would appreciate any advice or knowledge anyone has.
