ISync won't start up through .mac

I have decided to finally use my .mac account and want to sync everything together.
I click into system prefs and choose .mac. When I next click on the sync button it goes grey and nothing happens.
If I view the iSync emblem in the top screen toolbar it tells me that 'syncing disabled'
I have tried to follow the Apple tutorials to sync but I can't get the first part to work . The 'Advanced' option also doesn't do anything when clicked in the .mac prefs.
Any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks

Can you boot from the installer disc#1 and see if you can run "repair disk"
from Disk Utility in the menu beneath Installer? Or can't you boot from the
installer disc...?
Sounds like the hard drive or some other controller device may be mal-
functioning but it may not be all that bad. The issue is an odd one and
worse-case there may be a hardware cause for this; if the hard disk
drive has gone bad or is unreadable by the computer and not seen by
the installer's Disk Utility, when booted from it. You may be able to
use disk tool options from that disc to zero the hard drive and reformat
to see if you can make it work. The directory may be bad on the HDD;
and you may need a different hard disk drive, or a third party disk utility.
PS: Was the Firmware Update performed on that machine while
it was running in OS 9.1 prior to attempting to run/install any OSX
system or boot discs in it? You don't specify if that was done first.

  • ISync won't start

I'm reposting the question below in this forum in hopes of getting a solution. In the Tiger: Installation & Setup forum I got one reply (from user Niel) who suggested that I:
"Create a new Finder window and click on the item in the sidebar with the house icon; from here, open the folders Library, Preferences, and then ByHost. In the ByHost folder, locate the item that has a name starting with com.apple.syncservices and move it to the desktop."
Unfortunately, there's no com.apple.syncservices file in the ByHost folder, nor is there anything similar. And a Spotlight search turned up nothing as well.
Any suggestions would br greatly appreciated--thanks in advance for your help.
I tried .Mac for the free trial period, found it not useful for me, and let the trial period expire. In the interim, I turned off syncing in iSync's preferences, so .Mac would not constantly sync in the background. I also in the interim upgraded to 10.4.6, which upgraded iSync to 2.2.
All this was in my everyday user profile, which does not have admin privileges.
Now my iSync won't start properly. The program hangs and I have to do a "force quit". If I right-click on the icon in the dock and select "Sync Devices", I get a dialog box that says that synchronization is not turned on, and I need to turn it on in iSync preferences. But, because the iSync program isn't starting up properly, "Preferences" is not an option in the iSync menus. So I can't turn on the synchronization.
    That's the definition of a "Catch-22"!
Here's what I've done so far to address the problem:
--Tried iSync under another profile with admin rights. It works properly, which tells me that the problem is limited to this user profile.
--Tried giving admin rights to the user profile. No improvement.
--Used Spotlight to delete all iSync items including the program, reinstalled iSync 2.1 from my original OS X DVD using Pacifist, and reapplied the 10.4.6 Combo Updater to update iSync to 2.2. iSync works in the alternate profile, but not the everyday user profile.
--Tried using iSync 2.1 without upgrading to 2.2--it worked fine in the alternate profile but not the user profile.
Any ideas? Is there any way to use a Terminal line command to reset the iSync preferences in the user profile? I'm at a loss as to how to proceed.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

An Apple tech called me last night to try to rectify my problem. After a further hour of trying various things, my problem is still unresolved.
What I think I need is for someone conversant in Terminal commands to give me the specific command for turning on synchronization in the iSync preferences. Here (I think) is the general syntax for such a command:
    defaults write {name of .plist file} {key} {-class} {value}
For instance, to use Terminal to put a Quit item in the Finder's File menu, you would enter:
defaults write com.apple.Finder QuitMenuItem -bool Yes
Although I'm very happy with Apple's proactive customer service, I'd like to get this fixed. Thanks in advance for any help that's offered.

  • IBook won't start up in Mac OS X

    Hi,
I have an iBook G3 with operation system OS 10.3.9 that I've been used for years. Recently, it just won’t start up in Mac OS X, the computer stops at the screen with a gray apple and a spinning gear. The last thing I remember doing is looking for physical address (Ethernet HW address) of the computer and didn’t change any setting. I don’t recall updating any program the last time I used it.
The computer passed all testes with “Apple Hardware Test” come with the computer.
I’ve tried everything that I can perform mentioned in "http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464". I once had the computer start up in safe mode to remove all login items as the document said and then I can never get into safe mode at all. I can now still boot into single-user mode but nothing worked.
I have two partitions (A&B), partition A has operation system installed. I used “TechTool Deluxe 3.0.2” to repair the disks, and partition B passed all testes and A sometimes passed all and sometimes failed on ‘Linear Read/Write, Random Read/Write, Read/Write Buffer’.
I can’t repair the volumes (both A & B) with disk utility using OS 10.3 install CD nor can I Archive and Install OS 10.3 on partition A, they both show the same error “could not unmount disk (-10000)”. I tried to erase partition B and it still showed “could not unmount disk”.
If possible I would like to save some files in partition A and I don’t care B at all. However, if necessary erase entitle disk and reinstall could be an option, though I don’t think that would work at current stage.
Any idea? Thank you in advance.
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Are you booting from the OS X Installer CD? You cannot repair a startup volume. If DU cannot unmount the volume it's because the volume is in use which suggests you did not boot from the OS X Installer Disc. I suggest you do that. After the installer loads select your language and click on Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. You can repair both volumes this way.
The problem you describe at startup suggests that there are missing or corrupted essential system files. The only fix is to reinstall OS X. You can do an Archive and Install only if the hard drive is OK so repairing it is essential if you want to do an Archive and Install.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)

I just got off the phone with an AppleCare agent. My iBook OS 10.4 wouldn't start - it just went to a blue screen. I'm happy to say that the agent got everthing working again and said that she would email me an article that would help if it ever happens again. She emailed me "Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)" I have 10.4, is this article any use for me or was I emailed the wrong articel. Is there an article "Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.4 or later)"????

Thank you for yoiur response. I'll click on that link and add my input..
Don't be put off by the title. The document's just as
valid for Tiger, especially if those are the same
steps that fixed your problem. The article was
revised Feb 2006 and someone forgot to update it to
    mention Tiger. Go to
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
, click on the It's good, but... link and
tell them it should be updated to include a reference

  • ISync won't start after creating sync conduits with iTunes

    Hey folks!
After establishing a link between my iPhone and iCal and the adressbook
using iTunes iSync refuses to start. It pops up for a split second in
the dock and then vanishes again. I gave it a try from a different
account on the same computer and everything works perfectly. What is
going wrong there? Are the conduits between iCal, the adressbook and
    iTune and iSync exclusive connections?
    Greetings,

  • IWork '08 applications won't start on my Mac Pro, 10.5.1

I installed iWork '08 (5-person family license); install seemed to go well. None of the three iWork '08 applications opens. I don't even get to the "please enter your license number" screen: a few bounces and then immediate premature termination. None of my other applications appears to be affected. I'm quite confident my disk drive directory is uncorrupted.
I tried all of the following without benefit:
    1. Restarting computer
    2. Restarting in Safe mode
    3. Reinstalling iWork '08
    4. Updating through Software Update
Curiously, I also have a demo copy of iWork '06. Keynote shows the same immediate termination behavior, but Pages opens normally and shows me the appropriate "do you want to use this in demo mode" startup screen.
I installed iWork '08 and ran it successfully on my wife's Power PC (dual 2 GHz) running 10.4.11, using the same source disk. It also works without a hitch on my 24" white Intel iMac running 10.5.1.
Here's a dump from system.log on the Mac Pro:
    Dec 25 16:01:14 Macintosh Keynote754: * Assertion failure in -NSMenu itemAtIndex:, /SourceCache/AppKit/AppKit-949/Menus.subproj/NSMenu.m:819

Additional debugging information: creating a dummy new account on the Mac Pro allows me to use iWork. So there's something specific to my main user account -- that DOESN'T turn off in Safe mode -- that's interfering with starting iWork but doesn't mess up other programs. Man, I REALLY don't want to have to dump my main user Library and put it back piece by piece until I find the offending code. Any suggestions?

  • IMessage won't start conversation from Mac

    Hey everyone,
Iv'e been looking for a solution online for this problem iv'e been having, but i couldn't find answers anywhere.
The problem is that for some reason, i can't start a conversation from my mac when trying to send new messages. when i send those messages from my iphone it works, and then i can continue the conversation from my mac.
also, iv'e noticed that it takes a lot of time for messages to "sync" itself with my conversations that i started on my iphone. is there any way to "refresh" imessage (like on mail for example...)???
i verified that my accounts on both devices are the same, that i have the same settings, but still, nothing works.
anyone is having the same problems?? anyone has a solution...?
    Thanks,
    Tal.

    Hi,
So,  in Messages main window you have New Message at the top left.
You are entering  your Contacts Name in the "To" field or using the Blue + icon > Contacts and selecting the contact.
The name is turning Blue ?
The Text entry field at the bottom also reads iMessage ?
If the name is not Blue then carefully click the downward arrow head at the end of the name.
Select the active iMessage option (highlighted with blue Speech bubble)
Does the name go Blue now ?
I tried testing with my iMessage Account logged out and the setting in the General Section set to Allow IMs and iMessages to "Wake" the app but this did not start the iMessage account when iMessaging from the iPhone
It was only a one off test with the app open but the account logged out which seemed closest to what you describe.

  • Re: iMac G4 won't start up in Mac OS X and black screen

I am having same problem. Sometine the iMac stay on all day; somestimes it freezes up and I get the message in 4 languages to power down; other times it startup after numerous trys. I think it is due to kernal panic but do not know how to fix it. I ran TechTool Deluxe that came with Protection Plan and all items passed. Exasperated.

The multi-language screen and prompt to restart are indications of a Kernel Panic
situation and that may be due to poor or bad RAM (failing chips can be replaced)
or due to some other hardware cause; or sometimes software conflicts cause it.
    • Resolving Kernel Panics:

    • Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#technotes/tn2002/tn2063.html
If you have the original software packet as shipped with the computer, it has
an Apple Hardware Test on disc media specific to that computer model. It
can be used as a boot volume, and set to repeat over a duration of time to
check and test some aspects of the machine's hardware status.
Between RAM chip issues, failing hard disk drive, software conflicts and
maybe problems in the logic board, some of these can cause the main
issue as suspected in a multiple-language restart panic screen.
You may also be able to carefully reset the Power Management Unit
to get the computer to recognize some aspects of hardware, maybe
to have it attempt to start correctly; unless there is some other failure.

  • Mac Mini won't start after installing OS X 10.6.3

My Mac Mini won't start after installing Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3. When I turn it on, the Apple logo appears and the initialization line starts to fill, but it suddenly stops. It does that again and stops at the same point, but this time it shuts down. What should I do?

If you are coming from 10.5.8, hopefully you backed up your important data first. Your mini will need at minimum, 1 GB of RAM to install Snow Leopard and at least 5 GB of storage remaining on your boot drive.
I treat 10.6.3 as a fresh, full install over a 10.5.8 system. That means I choose Disk Utility from the Installer's menu and repartition the boot drive as a single partition, Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format, and use the GUID partition scheme from the options button. At this point, while still in Disk Utility, I would verify the drive under First Aid.
Then I turn the installer loose, and reboot into a working 10.6.3 system, ready for the software updates that take the machine to 10.6.8.
So, following the above guidelines, reinstall 10.6.3.

  • Photoshop Elements 4 suddenly won't start up

I last used Elements on 7th July. It was fine. Since 21st july, it won't start - goes through all the brushes loading etc but then quits.
    I have:
Removed all Adobe programmes, prefs etc using AppZapper
Cleaned up using Adobe's maccs3clean script
Repaired disk permissions (a huge long list there, why?)
Re-installed Elements 4.0 between some of these stages.
No luck! It still crashes at the same point. Could I try reverting to an earlier system state via TimeCapsule, if so how do I do that?
Or, re-install the OS (my Leopard version would be quite old now) and do a total update?

  • [SOLVED]amdcccle won't start

Hi all, before I explain my problem, I have spent the last 6 hours searching google and these forums for the answer, so I apologize if I have missed the solution somewhere.
Its 1:38pm here in Australia, and since I woke up today I have been trying to install the drivers for my amd 6950 2gb card.
I "finished" my first ever arch linux install last night, and installed the catalyst and catalyst-utils packages from the unnofficial repositories as I thought they were the newest. They seem to have worked, I am now in xfce4 wm(not as my environment), and everything is working great. However, because my monitor uses hdmi, whenever I do a fresh install of drivers the screen is scaled down by 15%, as this is for some reason a default in the driver. I usually just start amdcccle as root and fix it, but amdcccle won't start.
tl;dr, amdccle won't start either through terminal or started through xfce app menu. Do I need to reinstall all my drivers or just install the amdccle package. sudo pacman -S amdcccle says "cannot find package".
I am loving the speed of arch linux so far, not having 100+ apps that I don't use is nice.
    EDIT: sorry, forgot the error:
amdcccle: error while loading shared libraries: libQtGui.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    Edit2: Wow, I am tired. I just realized I hadn't installed Qt.
If an admin/mod wants to delete this thread then go for it, otherwise Ill i leave the solution to the problem here for other new users like myself.
    To fix just run
    pacman -S qt

I followed wiki for uninstall catalyst, reboot, then clean install of catalyst, reboot, it's the same.
But I've found a way to make it work : disable lxdm and reboot.
Then I remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb at each boot, before running startx. Then I'm able to open amdcccle, check configuration, fglrxinfo gives :
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ fglrxinfo
    display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 8650G
OpenGL version string: 4.3.12614 Compatibility Profile Context 13.25.18
If I reboot again, the problem appears again, then I kill X, remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb again and it works.
I'm going to see if the problem is the same with razor-qt.
