ISyncing two Macs without .Mac?

How does one go about doing this? Can I setup one Mac as a webdav server, or use another host as a Webdav server that I currently have? All my Macs are running 10.4.8. I have a Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz, and the two iMacs listed below all on an Airport Extreme network.
I'd like to sync Mail, Addressbook, photos, bookmarks, and calendars.

Synchronization of .Mac data types—bookmarks, calendars, contacts, mail structures, rules, signatures and smart mailboxes—is limited to three approaches:
• the use of .Mac Sync linked to a .Mac account
• the use of MySync
• the use of the announced but not yet shipping SyncTogether
More information about MildMannered Industries' MySync is available here:
http://www.mildmanneredindustries.com/mysync
More information about Mark/Space's SyncTogether—which is based partially upon MySync, which it acquired some time ago—is available here:
http://www.markspace.com/synctogether.php
The applications listed above are limited to the .Mac data types supported by the Sync Services framework. None of these applications support the synchronization of non-.Mac type data files, including iPhoto images, so you'll need to use yet another approach to that challenge - ChronoSync from Econ Technologies:
http://www.econtechnologies.com/site/Pages/ChronoSync/chrono_overview.html
And, remember that Mail synchronization does not mean the synchronization of mailbox content. For that, you need to be using IMAP, rather than POP3, mailbox technology.

  • Sync two Macs without .mac??

    Hello there...
Is there any way to sync two macs without using .mac? I have a G4 iBook and a G5 iMac and I would like to sync their iCal so both calendars look the same on each computer.
    Thank you for your help.
    Hagen

Free eh? (Why does everybody want something for nothing these days?)
Well, there is notMac, but you need your own server, and alot of time and technical know-how to set it up.
Otherwise nothing free... developers (like regular people) generally like to be paid for their work and long hours.
For $25 you can get iSynCal
For $20 you can get BusySync

  • Syncing two macs: what will work without icloud?

Hello. I'm considering buying a second mac, or finding a totally different solution. One of the key questions is: can i still sync two macs; or: what, if anything at all, will sync, what won't without using icloud (which is  totally out of the question, and please no debate on that in this thread, i simply want to know the facts).
    Thanks a lot

you may be right. The decimus guys however don't even get their own web site together, which doesn't inspire a lot of trust. Besides, what I really want synchronized, and what I don't see in their list, is iCal, Address Book, everything that happens in mail (sent mail appear as sent on both machines even outside imap accounts), and of course it would help to have everything in like the document folder in sync. If reminders and notes would go in sync, too, good.
Now, like I said you're probably right in principle about the two machines situation. But I might consider getting the smallest MacBook, which probably won't match my MacPro, and won't accept a 2560/1600 external monitor either. Don't know yet.
    Thanks

  • TS2198 ical (the calendar program) that came with this apple mac pc suddenly stopped working, then disappeared from the computer, from the desktop where I have been using it for the past two years, without trouble, then from the list of applications. . .

ical (the calendar program) that came with this apple mac pc suddenly stopped working. When I pulled the icon from the desktop, it then disappeared from the computer.I have been using it from the desktop for the past two years, without trouble. It has uninstalled itself, without my intervention and has eradicated all traces of it, including all my entries from the computer memory. There is no program in the applications list. Can you say why this may have happened please?

I opened one of the .calendar folders. There was a folder named Events which had either one or some files ending .ics. I opened several of these, which put up a dialogue window showing some parameters with data strings attached as follows :-

  • Using iSync to sync two macs

Is it possible to use iSync to sync two macs?
I use a PowerBook and a Mac Mini and it would be handy if address contacts and calendars could by synced easily.
I would rather not get a .mac account.
Surely another mac should show up when you click 'add device' in iSync?

In addition to the information Julian provided, you can use commercial software as an alternative to .Mac for some synchronization purposes.
SyncTogether from Mark/Space will synchronize five of the six .Mac data categories across user accounts on a single machine, across users on a local area network, and across the internet. Keychain synchronization is not supported.
BusySync from BusyMac provides local area network only synchronization and sharing of otherwise read-only iCal calendars.
You can also investigate such products as SpanningSync for synchronization of iCal calendars using Google, and Plaxo, which offers contact, event and tasks synchronization—in a not quite ready for prime time beta release—for the Address Book and iCal.

  • Two Mac Minis one with Airport and one without..and an Airport extreme

Please advise..I have two Mac Minis. One is older with no Airport card and one is newer and came with an air port inside. I also have an Airport Extreme and A Speedstream 5100 Ethernet ADSL modem. Here's the deal: I connected the old MacMini with no airport to the AirPort Exreme via LAN port. I also connected the Speedstream 5100 modem via ethernet cable to Airport Exreme. I can get onto the internet on the old Mac Mini with this set up. However, I cannot get the new Mac Mini's Air Port to work or "see" the network. Not sure what to do next...

I also connected the Speedstream 5100 modem via ethernet cable to Airport Exreme.
Just to double-check. Do you have the Speedstream connected to the WAN (circle-of-dots) port on the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)?
However, I cannot get the new Mac Mini's Air Port to work or "see" the network.
Which radio mode to you have the AEBSn configured for? The default is "802.11n (b/g compatible)". Also, which wireless encryption are you using? Do you have the AEBSn configured to not broadcast its Network Name (SSID)? ... or using MAC filtering?

  • Aperture on two macs

If I have Aperture on two macs (subject to license), is there a way of syncing so that both are up to date with images?
I have a .mac account, but not sure if isync will do this.

I like to show off photos and slide shows on the macbook...
If your work will be done on the iMac and the MB is only for show, you may want to configure the iMac as the single main box, with main library and Masters (either Managed or IMO preferably Referenced). Then you export Projects from the iMac and import them without importing Masters to the MB. As long as your Previews are set larger than enough to fill the MB screen you do not need Masters attached the MB and need not carry an external hard drive for the MB.

  • I have two macs. I have two itunes libraries. How can I sync my iphone with both

Itunes is driving me insane every single day now.
I have two macs so I obviously have two itunes libraries. I have purchased things on both my desktop and my laptop UNDER THE SAME ACCOUNT.
How Can I add/sync media from both without having to erase EVERYTHING. So ridiculous.
    Thanks

To share the iTunes content between your computers, just enable Home Sharing from iTunes > File > Home Sharing.
You'll still have to sync the iPhone with just one iTunes library because of the copyright restrictions that iTunes must follow.

  • Sharing the same data on two macs

Hello, I have two Macs and would like to keep the same data on each laptop. I don't think iSync is the tool for the job. Can anybody out there advise of an easy affordable method of ensuring both my machines are sharing the same data; itunes, photo's, files, etc.
    Many thanks.

Get FoldersSynchronizer You can set up a selection of folders and sync them between two Macs.

  • Sharing iphoto library on two macs?

    Hi Folks,
I have two macs in the house. One a mini linked to a tv and an iMac. The iMac holds my primary iPhoto Library. What I would like to do is share the same library with the mini mac, without having to use the sharing option. Can I place it on an external drive and link both macs to that library? I am running 10.5 if that makes any difference. Thanks, Andrew.

    Andrew
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
(Some people have had success putting the library in the Users/ Shared folder. If you do this make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone.)
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Network problem - two Macs running Leopard won't connect or share

We've just bought a refurbed Mac book Pro since our HP notebook is so bloody unreliable and I suspect is about to cark it through overheating/inadequate cooling. The only problem is that networking it with our G5 is turning into a real nightmare, and embarrassingly both the HP and an old desktop PC can not only see and share with each other they can also see and be seen by both Macs and use the printer connected to the G5, and absolutely everything connects to the internet and shows up in the DHCP list on the router. Even more annoying was that the Macs connected initially this morning when we got the Macbook Pro out of the box, but after we'd done the initial round of software updates (10.5.2 was installed on the MBP) we've had nothing but trouble. Quite often they'd be in the shared list in the Finder window but wouldn't connect when clicked. Other times they wouldn't be there at all. We've even tried connecting the two over firewire, which worked for the G5 but not the MBP although the MBP could see the folders on the external hard drive we use for Time Machine backups of the G5.
File sharing is on for both Macs (and printer sharing for the G5 obviously), AFP is enabled, firewall settings have been moved to Allow All... everything looks right but it doesn't work right. Right now I've managed to get the G5 to connect to the MBP using the Go>Connect to Server method mentioned elsewhere here, but it's one way only. It didn't work when we tried it on the MBP.
The network is part cabled, part wifi. We've got a Motorola Surfboard cable modem/gateway/wireless router, both notebooks are connecting wirelessly, both desktops are cabled. If it makes any difference both Macs are on 10.5.5, the old desktop is Win2K (please don't laugh) and the HP notebook is Vista.
    Any suggestions?

Well, it all seems to work now though I can't explain why and have no idea if it would work for others generally. But what we did, having reinstalled 10.5.2 and got the MacBook Pro back to exactly how it was when it arrived, was to install one update at a time checking that the two Mac could still communicate after each stage and with regular backups to be extra safe. The order we did the updates in was:
    Airport Utility
    Remote Desktop Client
    iTunes
    Front Row
    Mac OS X Combined
    Migration and DVD/CD Sharing
    Java
    Airport Extreme
    QuickTime
    QuickTime H.264 Compatibility
    Security Update
    Safari
Maybe the order doesn't make a difference, I really wouldn't know. But then it doesn't make sense to me that updating one item at a time would make a difference either. However, we now have the network working properly with the same network settings used before when it was hit and miss at best. Glynn, maybe it's worth giving it a try on yours though without a clue why it's now working here I couldn't call it a solution as such.

  • Connect two macs wirelessly

How to connect two mac wirelessly?
I tried creating a network, but after that, I can't connect the internet.

If each Mac can get on the Internet, without re-wiring, your network is already in place.
Do not create a Network. If you did, you will need to tear that down before proceeding.
Enable File Sharing on each Mac, NOT Internet Sharing.
