  • Resolution issue with macbook pro 13 (late 2013) and dell u2711

I have a Dell U2711 (native resolution 2560x1440) that I use without issue with a macbook pro late 2007 (running 10.10.x), various iMacs and Macbook air 2011 running 10.10. When I say without issue, the display works at its native resolution.
Last week we got a MacBook Pro 13in, late 2013 model.
If I connect this macbook via either thunderbolt connection to the u2711 using either DVI port on the dell, the maximum resolution that I can use is 1920x1080. I am using apple mini displayport to DVI adaptors (I have tried 2 different ones and 2 different DVI cables, with no improvement). Clicking option + scaled in sys prefs does not give the native resolution as an option.
However, I just discovered that if I use a DVI to HDMI adaptor and I connect the macbook to the display I get the full native resolution without issue (2560x1440).
I have zapped the pram, powered down the display etc etc etc and it made no difference.
I would prefer to use the mini DIsplayPort to DVI adaptor rather than HDMI, any suggestions appreciated.
    TIA.

You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.
Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have? Recent versions of OS X really shine with 4GB or more.

  • MacBook Pro 15" Late 2013 freeze every hour at the same time

    Hi guys,
My MacBook Pro 15" Late 2013 Retina freeze every hour at the very same time. Before every freeze in console i see something like this:

I have 512GB SSD Drive which has 2 partitions. One for Mac OS X 10.9.4 (13E28) one for Windows 8 (which I'm not using) also I have Parallel Desktop App which I use once a month. Also I'm using TimeMachine + external HDD (do backups once in 2 weeks).
Everything was ok for 4 month. A month ago I've start experiencing freezes 1-2 a day and now it became worse, every hour. I've try to repair disk permissions, repair disk. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
I read in one of the website that some people fixed this issue updating ssd firmware. But I'm not sure where to get firmware for my ssd.

    Sorry I missed that.
This is what I think is happening:

There are two options, keep the Time Machine HDD connected full time or turn Time Machine off and on only when you want to make the backup.

  • Kernel panic macbook pro 15 late 2013

    Hello
I have a Macbook Pro 15, late 2013 Retina, and I found in the last month on two occasions with unexpected blockage in my computer, grey, restart and subsequent error message screen. In none of the two occasions I was performing tasks that demand high resources, only listening music from iTunes (via Airplay), surfing the internet and retouching an image in preview (for Mac app).
I would appreciate any help on which could be the reasons for this event.
    Thanks in advance. Regards!

  • Does the new Macbook Pro 15" (late 2013) supports 4K via Thunderbolt/Displayport?

I understand that the new Macbook Pro 15" (late 2013 with Nvidia) supports 4K screen resolutions via HDMI at low hertz. But does it support 4K via Thunderbolt/Displayport? I read on Intel's web that the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB memory in theory can support it. Would be important as a range of new 4K 32" monitors will come out over the next year. Would be great for photo, video editing etc.

I also am very confused by this because per apple's support page it only supports 4K via HDMI at 30Hz but SHOULD support 60Hz via a mini display port 1.2 specification built into thunderbolt 2.
However, I think it does include 60Hz support (although not mentioned on apple's website).  My evidence of this is that on the ifixit teardown they found a an Intel DSL 5520 Thunderbolt 2 controller which according to Intel's and Wikipedia's website is falcon ridge which means it should support Display port 1.2 natively.  Plus, on apple's thunderbolt page they specifically mention connecting a 4K display to a macbook pro through the thunderbolt port (not which is suggested by the support page listed above):
"Now with Thunderbolt 2 built into the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can connect the latest 4K desktop displays and get double the bandwidth for your peripherals. And the two generations of Thunderbolt technology are compatible with each other."
Also, the Apple mini displayport support page has not been updated since 2012 but I believe it is just showing old information
The BIG piece of evidence against the new macbook pro's supporting 4K through the thunderbolt port is that on apple's tech specs page they specifically mention 4K under the HDMI section but make no mention of it under the thunderbolt 2 section.

  • MacBook Pro 15" (late 2013) crashes on wake

    Hello!
This 2 weeks old MacBook Pro 15" (late 2013) randomly crashes on wake from sleep.
Machine was working fine for about a week, until I first time experienced the issue.
Since then it has started to happen more and more frequently.
    Here's how it goes:
I open the lid, see the login screen, it might be unresponsive, if not I type in my password and try to login:
OSX freezes and might crash & reboot right away
Or just freeze and I need to manually shutdown by holding down the power button
Usually on the reboot, following the crash, the drive (Apple SSD sm0512f) with OSX is not found, and I get the blinking folder with question mark inside of it
I shutdown again, reboot while holding down Option-key to show the boot drive slection menu. I might have to repeat the reboot several times to get the machine find a drive
I tried to do a full erase and install OSX clean, but the disk utility displays the drive in read only -mode.
    Another thing which happens occasionally:
While using the machine, the built-in keyboard and/or touchpad becomes unresponsive.
This might be followed by a crash & reboot. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it helps if I plugin any USB-device,
such as external keyboard or an iPad, which somehow restores touchpad & kb's functionality.
I think I am dealing with faulty hardware, and should take the machine to repair. What do you think?
Anyone had similar issues which were solved by some software fix?

I'd bring it in, thats what your warranty is for.

  • Battery refuses to work on Macbook Pro 15 " late 2011 model

Hi my Macbook pro 15" late 2011 model is just over a year old. This morning it refuses to switch on. It works with the charger plugged to it and although a green light comes on the report states there there is no battery. The battery icon has an X in it. Pease could someone help. I have tried resetting and shutting down.
    Battery Information:
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          0
      Fully Charged:          No
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          0
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          0
      Battery Installed:          No
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          0

Based on the information you show, the battery is totally discharged or dead, or the connection circuitry is broken.  A trip to an Apple store genius bar will be required for a definitive diagnosis.

  • MacBook Pro 15 (Late 2013) - OS X Parental Control Account keep showing in Arabic language!

    Hello,
I brought MacBook Pro 15 (late 2013) at local Apple Store. After setting up Mac, I observed that in Parental Controls, the default account name is showing in Arabic language. I verified Mac language settings and are set to English.
No 3rd party apps installed except Microsoft Office, Adobe Flash Player and VLC Media Player.
Is this new kind of malware?
Any further help would be appreciated. Thank you!

  • Lack of DIY hardware upgrades for retina MacBook Pro

Can any hard-core Apple Fanboys testify that somehow built in ram on new retina MacBook Pro's is more stable than replaceable RAM modules which have come with previous models? I understand Apple's decision to move to built-in ram to make the overall computer smaller but it worries me a little not being able to replace or upgrade the RAM whenever I want to or whenever I need to. So I'm wondering if anybody can testify that built-in ram is better.

I would love it if they didn't phase it out. I just think its common sense. No one hear can say they understand apple more than the next forum member. I simply was asking if anyone here had any better technical knowledge than myself and knew for a fact that built in ram was or was not any better than sodimm. Ram
Is one of those things that us techs troubleshoot and replace often and it's a no brained that those with retina MacBooks will have to have their entire motherboard replaced if the Ram goes bad, unless apple put the ram on a separate replaceable board.

  • How can I tell the MacBook Pro with 13-in retina that I purchase is the late 2013 model from the box?

I'm wondering how I can tell the differences between the late 2013 model and the early 2013 model of MacBook Pro with 13-inch retina from the box?

You can enter the serial number in the appropriate field on a web site such as this and it will tell you what model it is:

  • Macbook Pro 13" late 2013 no response after efi update

Yesterday I installed the recommended EFi firmware update (either 1.2 or 1.3, I can't find out yet), everything installed fine and run well. In the evening I put my mbpro into sleep mode, today in the morning I was not able to restart it. If I press the power button, only the startup sound is played.
After pressing the power button, display (intern and extern) remains black, only the white apple on the cover is illuminated. No keyboard response and backlight either. Remote access also not possible.
I did reset the SMC (left shift+ctrl+alt+power) -> the charger LED showed the expected reaction. But nothing changed afterwards.
Anyone's got the same effect? What can I do? Please help. Many thanks in advance.
Macbook Pro 13" Retina Late 2013
    16GB RAM, 512MB SSD
    Intel i7 Haswell

Short update: After reading a while I tried several keyboard shortcuts during start up ... and I solved the issue:
Hold Command + Option + 'p' + 'r' during startup. This zaps the PRAM (Parameter RAM), an option that long-time Mac users will remember. Press and hold the key combination until you hear the second set of chimes. Zapping the PRAM returns it to its default configuration for display and video settings, time and date settings, speaker volume, and DVD region settings.
Thanks to all people who document such issues and its solution.

  • Swapping storage drive between 13 and 15 inch retina macboks? (both late 2013 models)

Hey all, i have two macbook pro retinas, one 13" 1TB late 2013 and one 15" 500GB late 2013.
Question is can i swap the hard drives out between each other? purely on a hardware level here.
Would they be compatible with with the logic board seeing as they are both same models only different sized display?
I have a time machine backup of both drives and would plan on restoring each once swapped over.
    Thanks in advance all!

You might check if something is available at OWC, but if not there is nothing that can be done. Those models do not use standard HDDs or SSDs.
You're always welcome to take it to the Apple Store and ask if they would be able to upgrade the smaller one, but typically Apple does not permit that.

  • MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2013, 11.3) will not install Windows 7SP1 Pro

    Hi All,
I have had many go's at this, but I am unable to install Windows 7 bootcamp on my late 2013 15" retina macbook pro.
First I'll head off with the specs:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,3
      Processor Name: Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed: 2,3 GHz
      Number of Processors: 1
      Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
      L3 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 16 GB
      Boot ROM Version: MBP112.0138.B02
      SMC Version (system): 2.19f3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M (and the Intel of course)
      512GB SSD
      16GB USB3 thumbdrive
      Windows 7SP1-U
      Windows 8.1
    First try:
Run bootcamp assistant (Version 5.1.2 (484))
Let it run and run, changed the partition to 101GB, eventually at the installer screen it asks for drivers. Dunno which, but keyboard and mouse fully functional
    Second Try:
Run bootcamp assistant (Version 5.1.2 (484))
    Update drivers from BootCamp5.1.5621
Same issue... no drivers for, I don't know which driver
    Third Try:
Run bootcamp assistant (Version 5.1.2 (484))
    Update drivers from BootCamp5.1.5621
boot with alt and boot into osx
remove the partition made by assistant and redo that by making a exFAT
reboot and start windows installer from USB
Same issue... no drivers for, I don't know which driver
    Fourth try:
Same as third, but with a USB2 thumbdrive
    fail...
    Fifth try:
Run bootcamp assistant (Version 5.1.2 (484))
Copied Intel(R)_USB_3.0_eXtensible_Host_Controller_Driver (read it somewhere but cant find the page anymore, downloaded from the Intel site)
Reboot, no KB/mouse so that failed
    Sixth Try:
Run bootcamp assistant (Version 5.1.2 (484)) but with a Windows 8.1 ISO
    Update drivers from BootCamp5.1.5621
Finally I had the opportunity to install Windows, but... v8. (and I want 7)
Let the install continue, but exited after 1 hour staring at "almost finished"
    Seventh try:
Run bootcamp assistant (Version 5.1.2 (484)) but with a Windows 8.1 ISO
    Update drivers from BootCamp5.1.5621
boot with alt and boot into osx
remove the partition made by assistant and redo that by making a exFAT
reboot and start windows installer from USB
Let the install continue, but exited after 45 minutes staring at "almost finished" (less patient this time)
    Eight try:
Same as try #2, hoping to get lucky....?
Unfortunately I can't come up with options. So any suggestions are welcome!
Maybe Win7 will never install on this
Maybe I need a different Windows 8 ISO
Can't go back to OSX 10.8 as it's not supported on this Macbook.
Ow... and why do I want Windows? Need to test several pieces of software which don't run on Mac
(also wanna play the Windows games with Steam in freetime)
    Thanks!!!!

Yes, as I already mentioned above:
Also I'm using TimeMachine + external HDD (do backups once in 2 weeks).
    Sorry I missed that.
This is what I think is happening:

There are two options, keep the Time Machine HDD connected full time or turn Time Machine off and on only when you want to make the backup.
    Ciao.
