It is safe to enable ntfs write support in Lion?

Hi,
I wonder how stable is the unsupported ntfs write feature of Lion?
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=785376
Has anyone tried this?
Thanks
Oliver

There actually is no problem with running it with the display lid closed as demonstrated by the lid-closed mode…
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286
Just be sure that youo do not block airflow out the back of your MBP as this is the new exhaust point as opposed to in front of the display and the grilles when the display is open.
However, it's not recommended without an external display as there is no way to indicate its operational state. A running MBP in this state looks just like one that's off which can increase the chances of damage.

  • Enabling (native) write support for NTFS

I used NTFS-3G for writing on NTFS before, but because of this (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4187322) i had to uninstall it.
A while ago i heard something about OSX having native write support for NTFS.
Is that even true? And if so, can i (and how) enable it on Mountain Lion?

Thank you. I've been looking at these two a little bit. NTFS-3g seemed like a pretty good choice at first, but I question the stability a little bit, as they do warn you that the project is experimental. Paragon actually looks like a good, safe solution, and also generally inexpensive, but I am trying to find out whether or not it will run on intel-based Macs, as it only lists system specs for running the program on a PPC-based Mac. I'll report the results as soon as I find out.
On the System Requirements Page for Paragon it does say Intel. Actually it says x86 which are Intel processor architecture, plus on the box it shows the Universal logo on it (hard to see but it's there).

  • Ntfs write not working

when i try to write to my windows partition, it says "Operation not permitted" and "Permission denied" even as root!  Here's my fstab!
    /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs defaults,umask=0,rw 0 0
It works fine with captive-ntfs, but not with the write ntfs i compiled in the kernel![/code]

In the present version of the NTFS utilities, it is not possible to write to NTFS partitions.  DO NOT WRITE TO THE NTFS PARTITION: You risk VERY serious damage to your NTFS partition if you write to it.
For more information about NTFS utilities, see:
    Linux-NTFS Project
    http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/misc.html
WRT: Writing to NTFS volumes, here's a quotation from the FAQ at this site:
"3.2 Can the Driver write to an NTFS volume, too?
Not really, but if you only need to copy files from Linux to Windows on a dual-boot machine, see "How to write to NTFS" below for a possible way to work around the lack of write support. For write support in Linux, read on.
There are two drivers, currently. The original driver, in 2.4 has some write code in it, but it is extremely dangerous to use it. The possibility of destroying your filesystem is very high.
The new driver, introduced in 2.5.11, has some write code, but it's very limited. The driver can overwrite existing files, but it cannot change the length, add new or delete existing files.
Adding write support will take a long time. NTFS is built like a database. Any changes you make, necessitate making changes in many places, for consistancy. Make a mistake and the filesystem will be damaged, make too many mistakes and the filesystem will be destroyed. Also, the current developers are only working on NTFS as a hobby, during their free time. If you'd like to help, please email me: [email protected]
How to write to NTFS. If you are using a dual-boot machine and just need NTFS write support to transfer files from Linux to Windows, you can instead use a Windows driver for ext2/ext3 and, while running Windows, read the files from the Linux partition instead. This way, using two read-only drivers, you can still copy files from one file system type to the other."

  • How to enable the NTFS Read/Write support without 3rd party software?

Is there a way to enable the NTFS Read/Write support of Mac OS X 10.6.8?

Well, I've used Paragon NTFS, but if you don't want to use 3rd party software, you should do this AT YOUR OWN RISK:
    Open Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
Type "diskutil info /Volumes/volume_name" and copy the Volume UUID (bunch of numbers).
Backup /etc/fstab if you have it, shouldn't be there in a default install.
    Type "sudo nano /etc/fstab".
Type in "UUID=paste_the_uuid_here none ntfs rw" or "LABEL=volume_name none ntfs rw" (if you don't have UUID for the disk).
    Repeat for other NTFS partitions.
Save the file (ctrl-x then y) and restart your system.
After reboot, NTFS partitions should natively have read and write support. This works in both 32 and 64-bit kernels. Support is quite good and fast, it even recognizes file attributes such as hidden files.
    Good luck!

  • Enabling NTFS Support On OSX 10.8.5

I will use HFS+ for Time Machine backups.  However, I still need to share files between the Windows and Mac world.
For Windows, I use a portable disk drive that I just drag and drop files to for backup.  This is sufficient for my backup needs.  I'd like to be able to access this drive for both read and write from the MAC, just as I do now with a thumb drive.  I found the following article on this topic:  http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57588773-263/how-to-manually-enable-ntfs-re ad-and-write-in-os-x/
It states ".... however, OS X does support writing to NTFS, but this feature is just not enabled by default."
It then goes on to describe how to do this "... to enable this feature, you have to do so on a per-volume basis, by editing the system's hidden fstab file to adjust the way the drive is automatically handled when attached and mounted. ......."  See article for details.
The article also notes "Keep in mind that the writing ability of Apple's NTFS driver has not been thoroughly tested, and though this will enable write support using Apple's driver, there may be some limitations or unknown behaviors with the driver, so use it with caution"
As noted, I will use it to access the NTFS drive for read and write from both Windows and Mac.  Just drag and drop.
    1. Has anyone else used this feature?  I know there are third party solutions, but I'd prefer using this if it works.
    2. If so, what limitations or unknown behaviors have been seen?
    3. When I talked with Apple tech support yesterday, they suggested I go to an Apple store and get assistance from the 'genius bar' for implementing the steps.  As the person noted, one bad keystroke entry could mess up my system.  Good idea!   Is there any reason why the Apple store might refuse to assist me?

    See below, use paragon
OR TUXERA for Mac for NTFS:
    http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

    Hi,
Please try to setting Folder Permissions on Web Publish, and then deploy it with Web Deploy, as far as I know, if we do that, Web Deploy will use the SetAcl operation to change permissions. Please have a look at the article below.

  • Re-enabling DVD-RAM support?

The DVD drives in MacBook and MacBook Pro (usually Panasonic/Matshita or LG, Googling around found those were the only brands shipped with MacBooks) support DVD-RAM media. However, it seems Apple decided to use "special" firmware that basically cripples the drive and disables DVD-RAM support. Well, at least write support (my MacBooks read DVD-RAM OK).
Is there any way to re-enable writing on DVD-RAM in MacBooks? Some non-offical firmware or something, anything?
I found some firmwares for old PowerBook G4 laptops that re-enables DVD-RAM support. But nothing for current MacBooks.

The DVD-RAM and UDF support in Mac OS X is good. It's been around for a long time too, since Mac OS 8.something. I've just copied over about 40 gigs of data from my DVD-RAMs I used for backup on the PC onto my MacBook (as I said, they forgot to disable reading from DVD-RAM, hoooray). It's just the hardware that's intentionally crippled. I could connect my external LG DVD drive (which supports all formats, including DVD-RAM) and use it to write files onto DVD-RAM media.
However, I don't see any reason why would I need to use external drive when internal drive in my MacBook is perfectly capable of doing it (if it wasn't for Apple that decided to flash it with their own firmware which disables the writes on DVD-RAM media).
If it was a desktop system, I probably wouldn't be complaining much. I'd just use my external LG drive. But it's laptop, and hauling external DVD drive around just because some manager decided users should not use DVD-RAM is not really an option...
If anybody from Apple is reading this, could you guys please with sugar on top re-enable DVD-RAM support in drive's firmware? It would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Edit Info.plist Within a Published .ipa File to Enable iOS Newsstand Support?

I'm working on developing a magazine-style app using Flash CS5. I'd like to enable iOS Newsstand support for the exported .ipa file. Anyone have any experience with this? I believe that I'd need to edit the app's info.plist file within the exported .ipa bundle ...
    Experiences / thoughts?
    Ted

    Hi Ted:
I have not implemented this yet. But as I can read on http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/StoreKit/Reference/NewsstandKit_Fram ework/_index.html, editing info.plist might take your app to newsstand but to take advantage of any NewsStand feature  you will also need to write some Native Extension also that provides access to NKLibrary , NKIssue NKAssetDownload.
I think http://www.viggiosoft.com/blog/blog/2011/10/17/ios-newsstand-tutorial/ this will help you do some newsstand stuff in native code.
If you ever use newsstand, I would love to see your app, please share your iTunes link.

  • How to enable hardware virtualisation support?

Today I upgraded to mac os x lion and when I open parallels desktop it asks me to enable hardware virtualisation support on my MacBook pro so that I can run windows xp as a virtual machine. I have searched the net and cannot find a way to access the bios to enable this feature, please could I have some support and advise on how to enable the VT. I did have any problems whilst I was on os x snow leopard and parallels used to work fine.

Here's some other help full info as well
VMware Fusion 3.1.3 was designed for OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) but is compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), with the reservations listed below. If you are running an older versions of VMware Fusion, upgrade to VMware Fusion 3.1.3 before upgrading to Lion. Fusion 2.x is incompatible with Lion.  For the best experience, reinstall Fusion after upgrading to Lion.  When running Fusion on Lion, these limitations are known to exist:
The Migration Assistant, included with VMware Fusion, is not compatible with Mac OS X Lion. This is due to a change in file sharing components.
VMware recommends that a Snow Leopard-based Mac be used to migrate an existing PC. The resulting virtual machine can then be used in Fusion running on Lion.
Boot Camp partitions are not accessible through Fusion after upgrading to Lion.
To work around this issue, delete the Boot Camp virtual machine from the library and recreate it.  For more information, see A Boot Camp virtual machine fails to power on with a disk error (1003483).
Minor visual issues have been reported when using Mission Control with Unity mode.
Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) Client and Server cannot be run as guests, at this time.
VMware can provide best effort support if you choose to upgrade to Lion, but we cannot guarantee a resolution for all issues.

  • Help Enabling 802.11b Support

Can anyone help? All I want to do is enable 802.11b support on my Cisco 877W. My 802.11g clients can see and attach to it no problems. My 802.11b clients cannot see it at all. I have tried all sorts but nothing has helped. My config looks like this:

    48.0 54.0
    station-role root
    no dot11 extension aironet
    bridge-group 1
    bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled
What do I need to add to make it visible and available to 802.11b clients?
    Many Thanks,
    Matt

I'd start by defaulting the AP back to factory default, no WEP, no authentication.
Check to see if the 802.11b clients can connect.
If all the 802.11b clients are running the same software, check to see that they are up-to-date drivers & client software. If you're using the MS client software (Zero Wireless Config) try a client using the vendor's client software instead.
If the clients are not eve associating, look at the basic parameters: things like preamble length (legacy default is "long" which is a one meg data rate)
If you can get the 802.11b client to connect whith all open parameters, then add WEP. Be advised that some clients need the WEP entered as HEX, not ASCII.
For example ASCII "ABCD" would be "41 42 43 44" in hex ... make sure you're using the same system. IF youre using something like "12345abcde" that can be a valid (but incorrect) hex string when ou really intend for it to be ASCII.
Also note that leading or training spaces (ASCII 20) are valid characters. Make sure you do not have leading or training spaces in your WEP (unless you really want them there, in whch case, make sure they're there)
Make sure the Ethernet format is correct: use the Web GUI to set up. Check the parameters on the "Interfaces" page and do not (at least initially) use the "Best throughput" or "Best Range" settings, leave it at "Default Settings"
If your 802.11b clients are PDAs, bar-code scanners, or other hand-held devices, check that they are at default settings for the standard 802.11b protocols; some use proprietary protocols for better performance or security.
That's about it for me ... let us know if any of that changes (works / doesn't work, but acting differently / doesn't work, looks the same).
    Good Luck
    Scott
