It is worth it to download OS X Mavericks?  I've heard mixed reviews.

I've heard some really bad things about Mavericks, as well as some really good things.  Is there any way that I can ensure success for the download?  Is it worth the update or not?  Honestly, I just want to be able to send iMessages from my laptop.

You can find good and bad reviews on every release of the Mac OS ever made. You can find the same thing regarding Windows.
The vast majority of users are having no issues with Mavericks. I've been using it for months without a single issue. If you decide to go ahead, make sure to have a full, restorable backup first. Nothing should go wrong installing Mavericks, but in the world of computers, there's no such thing as "never".

  • Would it be worth it to download lion if i have the macbook that came out right before the unibody series?

I bought the macbook right before the unibody's came out (literally the month before....) but would it be worth it to download Lion?  will all the multi touch features be compatible ?

depends on what you do and how much ram your MBP holds. If you're exeriencing slowness in SL then you will probably expereince even more in Lion. If you have a set amount of apps you use daily, you should check their compatibility and if there are issues surrounding that. If you are not able to do a clean install of Lion, which I would highly recomend, then you really would need to go through each periferal thing, app, hardware, that wasn't out of the box and see if it is worth it to switch.
Note that Java and Flash are not preinstalled so these too are things that have been causing issues with people browsing the internet and obviously somewhat overlooked in the way lion performs.
and finaly, always make a full back up of your machine in SL before switching to Lion in Time Machine. This will save you greef if you don't care for Lion.

From the information that you have provided, it sounds like your Apple ID has been disabled.  You can read this to see how you can troubleshoot that issue.
Apple ID is Disabled - Apple Club - Google Sites
You can try signing out of your ID on the iPad and sign in with his ID and see if that works.
Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Then sign in with your husband's newly created ID.

You can't install the App Store version of Mavericks because your model needs a special version. If you ever need to reinstall it, boot into Recovery.

Oh, you do have the C2D! That's great!
I'm no technical expert, I just like to help out whenever or wherever I can so... I don't know if this can help you, but let me tell you about how I got my Snow Leopard to run in 64 bit mode. When I got my (late 2008) iMac it was running in 32 bit mode under Tiger (2.4 GHz/Core 2 Duo). I eventually upgraded to Snow Leopard & it was running in 32 bit mode (by default) w/1 GB RAM.
Somewhere along the line, I happened to watch a YouTube Video that showed how to upgrade an iMac's RAM, so I ordered two - 2GB sticks of Crucial RAM and then - under the guidance of the 14 or 15 year-old young man who posted the video on YouTube; wearing a rather fashionable static-electricity-neutralizer-wrist-strap, I removed 1GB of RAM & plugged in the 4GBs of RAM. So - boom like that, it was like I bought a brand new machine.
It was over a year later when I stumbled across a way to boot Snow Leopard into 64 bit mode. Turns out that if you boot while holding down the 6 & 4 key combo (the ones above the QWERTY keys), then the machine runs in 64 bit mode. Go figure. Now my Snow Leopard and just about all of my applications - with the ironic exception of iTunes - runs in 64 bit. iTunes seems fine though; if there's a performance bottleneck, I really can't tell.
    Well, that's about it..
I hope that something I've mentioned can help you achieve your overall goal.
Finally, it's hard to jump onto a train, a large cat, or a surfboard that's already moving. But don't be surprised when someone a fraction of your age shows you how to.
    Best Regards,
    mm~

  • I can´t download OS X Mavericks or Photoshop

Hi, I got my Mac back from service. They changed the hard drive and now for some reason I can´t download back some programs. Iphoto and photoshop that I use daily. They don´t download properly and I have tried to update with the OS X maverick to see if the problem is the versions. But I can´t download it either. Anyone has a clue? It charges and looks like it´s bought but it doesn´t work.

    Download problems:  Not Mavericks
    - Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
    - Quit the App Store
    - In Finder - Go>Go to folder...  (or Apple-shift-G)
    - Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
    - It will take you to a folder.  Delete com.apple.appstore
    - Launch the App Store.  Sign in and then reclick the Mavericks.
You can also try resetting the App Store and Clearing Cookies.

  • Why can't I download OS X Mavericks? The download option is malfunctioning. I already checked that my mac version can have free upgrade. I click download, but it just doesnt do anything.

Why can't I download OS X Mavericks? The download option is malfunctioning. I already checked that my mac version can have free upgrade. I click download, but it just doesnt do anything. I went to purchase tab, clicked "download" next to the app but still nothing happens. It's not internet problem because everything else on the app store works. The only thing not working is Mavericks downloading and I don't know why. Please help.

To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space
Since Mavericks requires 8GB's or more of free disk space, control click the MacintoshHD icon on your desktop or open the Finder, right or control click startup disk in the Sidebar on the left then click Get Info.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.
If installed, disable anti virus software before downloading Mavericks.

  • Is downloading OS X Mavericks a good idea for my mac book pro?

I have heard alot of controversial information about downloading OS X Mavericks. Ideally I would like to download it but I am afraid of losing everything on my macbook. Should I download it anyways? or not? or back up my mac and then download? if so, how would I go about backing it up?

That's a very logical question, and yes... that's exactly what you want to do.
Get an external USB hard drive. They're cheap on Amazon, or you can often catch a good sale somewhere else. I'd start by formatting it with Disk Utility as 1 partition, GUID, and Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) NOT case sensitive. If you don't know how on that part, just write back and someone will walk you through it.
The other thing you want is Carbon Copy Cloner. It's not free, but unlike its competition it will also copy the recovery partition. Use CCC to make an exact copy of your existing drive before you install Mavericks. That way if you have any problems it's very easy to go back.
By the way, good thinking. A lot of people don't consider this and it's pretty hard to go back without doing this procedure.

  • How do I find out how much space I have left on my macbook pro? I downloaded the new mavericks operating system and can't figure it out. Before the space would be at the bottom of my finder.

I downloaded the new mavericks operating system on my macbook pro and I can't find out how much space I have left. Before the installation of mavericks, storage space left was displayed at the bottom of the Finder window.

In the Finder, under the View menu there is an option to Show Status Bar.  Select that and you will see the info on the bottom of folders again.

There is an app that I did not download in my update section.  I read reviews and it seems to be spy ware.  How do I get it from not showing up on my app updates?  I do not want to download or update it, obviously.

If the app is G-Toolkit and you have a Gmail app on your iPhone, delete the Gmail app.  Apparently the G-Tool kit is tied to a Gmail app.  From searching the web my impression is that G-Toolkit is not spyware and is from a legitimate company that produces app for several platforms.
