It just can't be this hard?

I have a wiki, blogs, webmail and web calendar all working just fantastically on my XServe (10.6.4). When you type in wiki.domain.com, you go to the XServe page where you can log in and access wikis, blogs, etc. We have webmail hosted via SSL so you need to access https... to get the mail link to work.
Aliases all work, external DNS all works, it's just great.
Now...all I want to do...is set up a part of the server to host websites by kids and faculty (the wiki is great, but it can't do some stuff that iWeb can do). We don't want to get fancy with CSS style sheets, asp pages, SSIs, CGI scripts - yet - I'm just trying to get it set up to work correctly.
I have read the Web Tech Admin documentation but I guess I'm just too stupid to understand what it's trying to tell me.
In Server Admin I have created a new site and pointed it to an entirely different folder on my XServe - different than that folder used by the Wiki, etc.
I have set an alias pointing "iweb.domain.com" to my XServe - the only server hosting web services.
When I type "iweb.domain.com" in Safari, I get the wiki login page. It seems to me that if I set the alias to point to the correct server (verified in dig and host) AND I have configured the site to use an entirely different file folder on the server...why am I getting the wiki page? (Yes, I reset EVERYTHING in Safari.)
In looking at how the wiki was configured (I didn't do it - I inherited it) I see a Users folder with all my users listed. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Users folder in the separate "iweb domain" folder I created with all the users' names in there and in those folders all their website content would be stored? Sounds ideal but darned if I can figure out from the documentation how to do that. I thought it would be automatically set up when I set up the site but I guess not.
The second problem, of course, is how to "hook" iWeb on the kids' laptops to point to that location on the server so that their site content can be uploaded.
Wouldn't it be great to type something like "iWeb.domain.com/~username" and go right to the site?
Wouldn't it be EVEN BETTER to type "username.domain.com" and go right to their site?
Look...I'm not opposed to reading how to do this if the material is reasonably intelligible. Of course being a one person IT shop that's stretched to the gills, the only SPARE time I have to read is at home.
It doesn't seem to me like this should be rocket science, but it sure looks like it is.
Is this something I can tackle in a reasonably short period of time or just tell the kids it can't be done?

Yeah, I tried that early on.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Webserver folder on the boot volume.
When I look at the settings for the wiki, the "site" is set up to use /Library/Webserver/Documents as the "Web Folder" under the "General" tab, but under "Settings" --> "Wiki" the folder on my RAID array is listed as the "Data Store".
One of my concerns is putting ANYTHING on that solid state hard drive I bought with my XServers (BTW, NEVER do that - if I only knew then what I know now!!!). I'm worried that it will fill up with extraneous data and then the server will shut down!
I've even tried using different ports for the extra website, but I get the same page that I have with my wiki but everything is grayed out and a message says "No Web Services are Configured" - well, the only web services I can configure are Wiki, Mail, Calendar, and Blogs.
Just as an aside, why is the documentation so worthless? I set up three separate websites @ InMotion Hosting in about 15 minutes. Of course, it's not my webserver. I swear, it would probably be a **** of a lot easier to buy a bunch of websites from them than fiddle and futz around with this. I could have been up and running a month ago!
Apple does some things really GREAT. Some of the other stuff requires a degree in rocket science.

I just can't figure this out

I have had my bb for about a year or so now and it was working okay. Within the last couple of months I just can't seem to connect the bb to sync w my computer or download anything because the "USB device not recognized" then when I go to check it tells me that no drivers are installed for this device but yet the drivers are supposed to come from my phone. I tried downloading device manager I don't even know how many times now and nothing because my device is not being recognized because there are no drivers. Can someone please tell me how I can download these stinkin drivers to my handheld? And... Now I am losing my txt messages, mms messages and emails. The phone flashes that I have messages and when I open my messages they disappear. What is that all about? I am getting so frustrated with this thing it's not even funny. And for the amount of money we paid for these things you'd figure they'd WORK! I just don't know what to do anymore. Please someone help me. Flustered!

For memory issue please perform the following steps -
Give a soft reset by removing the battery for 30sec.
Check how much memory is free in your device to Options -> Status -> Free Memory. To view all the database size go to Option -> Status -> click Menu button then select Database Sizes
Delete less frequently used application. To delete go to Options -> Advanced Options -> Applications -> highlight the application you want to delete -> click Menu and select Delete

I've seen a bit hereabouts on graphics import problems, but nothing so far has led me to a solution.
Here's the thing: A multi-layer graphic was created for me in Photoshop CS2. It has a backround image and text. I intend to use it as a menu background. Looks swell in Photoshop, but when imported into DVDSP4, the text goes bad on me. The nice smooth edges on the capital "S" and other rounded characters now look roughhewn. The capital "T" and other hard edge characters look fine. The background image looks fine. Only the text stubbornly refuses to look like it does when still in Photoshop.
The file was delivered to me at 800x600, 72 dpi. I've tried importing it into DVDSP4 most every way my feeble mind can think of: as is, resized to 720x534; as a merged-layer psd file; as a flattened psd file; as a tiff; as a pict; as a jpeg. It always comes out exactly the same - bad font problems, background image okay. I then took a few of the above images, dropped them into menus, burned a disc and looked at the finished product on my TV. The font problems were still very evident. (I also included on the test disc a menu with fonts entered directly from DVDSP4; they looked just fine.)
Obviously, I'm missing something here. I have only superficial knowledge of Photoshop, so I'm really at a loss. Clearly, one should be able to transfer a graphic from Photoshop to DVDSP4 without a noticeable loss, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to do it.
Any advice, o learned ones?

By the way, I just now tried a test file of my own. Started from scratch with the NTSC 720x540 preset; typed in some print (36 pt, 24 pt); left the setting at "crisp"; saved the file as a PSD; imported it into DVDSP4; dropped it into a new menu ("Set Background, All layers visible") and...same problem.
But just so my expectations are not off base, let me ask you this: The test file looked fine in Photoshop, yet the round characters all looked very rough once they were dropped into the DVDSP menu. What do you see on your setup when YOU do this? Are the letters all approximately as clean and well-formed as they were when residing in Photoshop? Now, I haven't burned this latest test file to see what it looks like on my TV, but I'm still curious as to why it looks so bad in DVDSP simulation. Note that text generated from within DVDSP4 looks just fine all down the line, from viewer to simulation to burned DVD.

This should be so simple, yet I fear a dearth of solutions.
I built a big, fat pdf deliverable for a client using structured Frame 9/DITA. They're tickled pink. Now they want, for a difference audience, a book composed of only the tasks. No concepts or reference topics. I'll want to include the "topic" topics because they're what I used for the chapter titles and brief intro blurb. Other than that, just the tasks, ma'am.
My own requirement is that the process must be automated. Manually setting attributes on every topic I want or don't want doesn't cut it. While I don't mind doing some manuaI labor initially, I need a way that the client can generate this book automatically, going forward. It really shouldn't be so hard to just exclude all concepts and ref topics, or to include only topics and tasks. But the only way I can find to do this is by filtering by attribute, which means manually setting attributes every time. Although I haven't gotten very creating with attributes, I don't know of a way you can automatically set a particular attribute value every time the element is used.
Ideas?

I haven't worked with structured FM in a long time, and never did anything with DITA or filtering by attributes, so this might just be a wild shot:
If there's some consistency to the items you want to tag with one or the other condition, you might be able to use a combination of Edit > Copy > Special to copy a condition from a sample to which it's applied, and Find/Replace > By Pasting, to apply the copied condition to found instances of the element you want to conditionalize.

OK - admittedly I'm coming from the most intuitive music player (Creative) where you fill a folder with music on the PC, plug in the player, drag the folder across, then get the player to play the folder - no fancy software required, no playlists, no categorisation, just play that folder please.
So I thought - creme de la creme, Nokia 95 8G, does everything doesn't it? Smartest phone on the market isn't it? I can toss the old player away.
Bah. What a load of old toss.
Why does the Nokia system have to be so complicated ?
Firstly - why do I have to create a new file type - "Playlists.m3u" - why can't the damn thing take a folder full of music and play it ? If I try dragging across several folders of tunes onto the device it a) doesn't recognise the folder structure and just shows a long list of music files and b) doesn't automatically recognise the new tracks and requires a "refresh". I thought these were supposed to be "Smart" phones - so with all that computing power, how come it can't do something this simple ?
Synching with Windows MP is an effing joke. First there are the dreaded playlists, then there is the absence of being able to tell the thing to just send stuff to the N95 and it insists on doing a 2-way synch so I have to sit there while it tries to synch content back to the PC - most peculiar, all other synching programmes normally allow you to choose one- or two-way synching. S'Ok - I know this isn't your problem, just thought I'd let you know not to suggest that I use this inutile offal.
And so we come to the Music function on PC Suite. Well first I had to get rid of the **bleep**py N Series Suite because bizarrely it didn't have the PDA functions of calendar and contacts that the "normal" suite version 7 promises.
Then the old problem of the Nokia Music Manager not recognising the folder structure as a way of categorising music grouping (even rubbish old WMP 11 will do this!). So we're going to have to go back the the extra step of creating effing pointless playlists. Finally I work out how to see the folder structure by showing pathname and sorting on that - phew, one housepoint to the development team. then I select my chosen files, drag to "N95 8G" and while they're there automatically create a playlist. Wow. This is getting easier - am I done? Oh. No. Hang on - this doesn't actually appear to be the phone, just a holding directory called "N95 8G" on the suite - presumably I press a button to synch it into the phone ? No - the only button wants to send it to "My Collection" (for the life of me I haven't worked out what this is for - I thought my collection was the several hundred thousand carefully arranged tunes on my laptop ? what the hell is this for then). Re-selecting these files under My Collection ungreys an option under "File" to send to phone - my God ! am I finally here! something's happening! Icons are flashing, timer are counting down. Oh. There's nothing on the phone. Ah yes, I was forgetting - dumb phone - I have to "refresh". Still nothing. **bleep**. Didn't work. **bleep** software, **bleep** phone.
Just to recap the TEN (ultimately useless) steps: 1) Open Nokia Music Manager; 2) find the correct folder structure; 3) select songs; 4) copy to "N95" folder in Music Manager; 5) create playlist (note - effectively recreating the existing folder structure); 6) select all; 7) copy to "My Collection" folder in Music Manager; 8) select all; 9) under "File" menu select "copy to 'phone"; 10) refresh 'phone.
Come on Nokia and pull your **bleep** finger out. Away with your fancy graphics and synching options and BPM calculations and your "ooh, let me choose the perfect song for you to exercise by" drivel. Let me simply listen to my tunes in a simple way that doesn't require me to re-organise my collection. I want a cheese sandwich on white bread. I don't want or need Roquefort with grapes and pickled mice on multigrain focaccia.
Let me simply, in three easy steps:
a) create a folder on my PC with my file manager with my selection of music in.
b) using my file manager, let me drag that folder to my N95 under "Music".
c) let my N95 recognise that folder structure and play the songs inside a particular folder.
Please. Please. Before the whole lot gets slung out of the **bleep** window. Please. Look - you don't even need ot get involved in the first two steps! You don't need to rewrite any of that **bleep**py Music Manager software or update your stultifyingly useless help files - all you need to do is to include an extra category in the next firmware upgrade of the Music Player that recognises folders, as well as artists, genres, playlists etc.

That's exactly what I want to do. Exactly.
I can easily and quickly drag several folders of music onto the phone. No problem. Part one of mission completed. Bypasses Music Manager, WMP, synching - the lot. Hip hip hooray.
The problem comes after a refresh. The phone shows all the individual tracks that it's found but doesn't respect the way in which I have chosen to group them in folders. It offers me the option to play by artist, by album, by genre, by playlist etc. It does not give me the simple option to play an individual folder-full of tracks.
The music player firmware doesn't seem to recognise this as a valid way of "grouping" music, presumably because it isn't buried as an attribute of the track or recognisable as a playlist instruction.
Perhaps I've been spoiled by the simplicity of the Creative system where even the most basic players work on this uncomplicated basis. Oh how I laughed at those Apple iDiots.
If anyone has a simple workaround for this - most appreciated.
Perhaps there's a "less intelligent" stripped down music player out there that works with folders that I can download to the N95 ?

I thought this would work but i just read one of the reviews and it says :
"CP specs state this is compatible with my mid 2010 Macbookpro 7.1, but it is not. I found this out after taking the computer and drive to the Apple store. OK, it's not so much CP specs that are wrong as the Apple folk took some time before coming up with the problem. Not all, but SOME of the 2010 systems with 2.4Ghz were never intended to use a 1Tb drive, and that means the OS will not mount properly."
Now im not sure if its just his problem, or all Mid 2010 MBPs that have this issue.

I have to question the premise of the review that you are citing. Any 2.5" SATA HDD should work in your MBP. Capacity is not an issue. You might call the technical staff at OWC and pose this query to them. I am confident that they will respond the same way I have.

I was assigned a final exam project, but most of the stuff we never actually saw in class, so I just have to figure it out for myself.
The part I'm stucked in (among other stuff) is:

This part of the code successfully created a group of JRadioButtons each with the names previously established in arean[ ]. However, I'm supposed to make it so that whenever I press any of the RadioButtons, the border of the JPanel changes as well. As it is, Java will put only the last name, and won't change it as I click the different JRadioButtons.
I'm not sure if I made myself clear, so if anyone is interested in helping me and needs further information, plz let me know.

I agree that the empty string is a nasty idiom (hence my removal of it). I figured arean had to be an array of Strings, if it is passed to the JLabel constructor (because toString on an Icon would probably be usely).

You can set restrictions via Settings > General > Restrictions e.g. hide Safari, iTunes, music or films/TV programmes via their age rating. If you are having problem doing that then what exactly are you trying to do and what happens when you try to do it ?
To delete an app, press and hold any of the apps on your iPad's homescreen and after a couple of seconds or so they should start to shake. Then press the 'x' in the left corner to delete the ones that you don't want, and when you've finished deleting press the home button so as to stop the apps shaking. If you don't get the 'x' on any of the apps that you've downloaded (you can't delete built-in apps) then check that Settings > General > Restrictions > Deleting Apps isn't set 'off'

No easy fix for a few reasons:
1) Bootcamp requires a hybrid MBR for the partition table. That is: both an MBR and a GPT partition table at the same time with the GPT one having all partitions and the MBR one having only the ones that are relevant, but at most 4 of them (including the protective partition and the Macintosh HD one). Which leads us to:
2) The MBR part of the hybrid partition table cannot work with 3TB hard drives. MBR is limited to 2TB.
I am working on a small EFI app that can boot Windows in EFI mode on a Mac and that would mean that you can go GPT only on your system. The progress of the app is slow due to the nature of EFI and for now requires that you do an unattended Windows install with slipstreamed graphics drivers, but we are adding VGA loading on top of EFI quite soon after the rest of the app stabilises. The status of the app is documented at:
Win7 x64 booting natively via EFI (no bios emulation)
Windows does actually successfully boot in EFI mode on most Macs (anything with a 64bit EFI should work), but does not have graphics support even if you load the driver due to the VGA pci registers not being set by the firmware. Furthermore, in Setup and Safe Mode, Windows uses VGA instead of GOP which is a failure by design since VGA is a BIOS standard and not really compatible without hacks with EFI. Other EFI implementations also add VGA compatibility at a high cost to the firmware complexity for the VGA cards available on the market that don't actually contain anything in their ROM except the VGA BIOS.
My recomendations:
1) Install on a second smaller hard-drive; or
2) Wait for the EFI app to come out officially and use that to boot Windows Vista SP1 x64 and Windows 7 x64 (RTM and SP1) in the native EFI mode.
3) Wait for Windows 8 which supports VGA-less booting acording to the AMD presentation at UEFI Plugfest.

Yes, you have WD software installed REMOVE IT !!
WD has warned its customers about their huge mistake that their software doesnt work on Mavericks and causes data loss.
(also dont use WD drives anymore)

USB2.0 PCI cards that use the NEC chipset seem to give the least amount of problems for Mac users.

Do you also connect the external USB drive to the AC power as well while you use it ?
Sometimes USB external drive problems are resolved simply by plugging them into the mains power and trying again.

i had one for a long time, then when i got the ipad i didn't realize they would all still work under one so i set up the second one on that
then when i got the new iphone i put in the info for the first and main one from my mac pro and it would not work at all, and i knew it was right, then it asked me to create a new one or i couldnt finish the setup
