It only shows computers and settings

Why does my Apple TV show sometimes only the computers and settings  on the screen?

That means it is having trouble connecting to the network. Ensure location is set correctly, DNS should be set to automatic. Make sure your router is up to date. If on wifi try ethernet.

Alright, I found the issue. This is how I have resolved my issue. I hope it will help you.
    1. This issue could happen, if your apple TV doesnt have internet, connectivity to iTunes servers, or you haven't logged in to iTunes account in your apple TV
    2. Test the network on apple tv - General - settings - network - test network, Try to aviod using wifi use LAN cable, since we are trying to fix the issue.
    3. Set your exact location manually - Which city you are in from settings-General - Time Zone- choose your City currently you are in.
    4. Login to iTunes account - settings- iTunes Store- set your default store - for example I am in Mongolia but using my New Zealand account on Apple TV, in our case my Apple TV iTunes account location is New Zeland.
    5. If you are facing any issues to login to your iTunes account, That explains you have an issue with connectivity back to iTune servers, or sometimes it could be apple iTune servers may have problems. To verify which is one is the problem login to your itunes on your laptop or desktop for testing purposes, make sure you are using the same internet connection as your home apple TV is using.
    6. if you are able to login you should able to see all the available channels and full list on Apple TV.
All the best..I just saved USD 29.00 but spend 5 hours...LOL..Its ok..its my Holiday spend with Apple TV.

  • HT1551 I am only showing Computers and Settings.  Can't get back to Movies or any other media.

Only displays Computers and Settings icons.  No media or other activities available.

sounds like the appletv does not have a working connection to the network
if you use wifi go in to the settings and choose your ssid and type in your password

  • Only Showing Computers and Settings?

Not fun for the last few weeks in trying to use a number of Apple TV's.  Upgrading to 5.2.1 resulted in 2 units
reduced to "Computers" and "Settings" only.  A unit that had 5.1 (I skipped upgrade) seemed to work fine ....
so I assumed backend services were OK.  Finally got all units working and upgraded to 5.2.1.
In wrestling with my Comcast cable modem (Arris TG852G) configuration there seemed to assignment
of the same ip address to multible devices, one being an Apple TV.  After cleaning up this issue and
assingning reserved ip addresses to the Apple TV units.  They are working fine and have been stable
    for several days.
I'll update this discussion in a few weeks if things remain stable or sooner if the problems return.

Well ..... it has been about 2 weeks and everything has been working fine.  All 3 Apple TV's have
been used several times with no issue.
I have also changed my config so that the Comcast modem no longer provides DHCP for any
device that connects with WIFI.  Config'd modem to only supply ip addr's 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.9
and config's Apple Time Capsule to supply 10.0.0.10 onward.  I never gained convidence that
the modem handled DHCP and reservations reliably.  I have confidence in the Apple TC.
My take away is: when setting Apple TV be sure IP addr space is clean.

  • My apple tv recently started showing only Internet, Computers and Settings as options

My apple tv recently started showing only Internet, Computers, and Settings as options. Does anyone know where the Television and Movies went. Anyone else experiencing this issue? I want my MLB and Netflix!

I had the loss of Internet after updating to 5.0.
Only Computers and Settings are available.
I tried through Ethernet cable, manual settings of the IP addresses etc. but no  result. still only Computers and settings.
It communicates with internet for Home sharing etc. Checking the network through ATV is happening. Only problem is "internet " option is not visible.
I have not changed any settongs in the wifi router during this process. The same ATV was working with all 3 options before update. will the update do any changes to WIFI Router in blocking DNS etc?
    Any advice will be ok.

I only see computers and settings icons on Apple TV

Try restarting the Apple TV by removing all the cables for 60 seconds, or resetting it using the reset option under general. Also try restarting your router.

My home page only displays computers and settings icons. No other icon. How can I get other icons?

Looks like a sudden error being thrown up on many ATV2 units.  Yesterday, mine was fine and today I now only have 2 icons like so many other posters.
No amounts of restarts or restores, disconnecting and reconnecting power, restarting routers, re-logging in to iTunes has any effect at all.

  • HT1551 Apple TV - can only see Computers and Settings options (no internet)

sine the apple2 tv software was updated last week I can only see options for computers and settings
whilst my internet connection is clearly working, I cannot access youtube or internet radio as there is no internet option
any ideas how to fix this pls?

My ATV3 has worked beautifully for the last week.  We woke up this morning to find this problem. Nothing weird happened over night - my entire network has been up all night with no resets or anything strange.
The ATV3 accessing all of my Home Sharing content, so I know the network is fine (wired). Tried resetting and cycling power.  Tried changing locations/setting language.  Nothing. I even tried resetting my DSL Router, but to no avail.
I've got nothing fancy going on with my location, short of being in Canada.
Update: Oh, and I have a 2nd ATV3 downstairs, also on a wired connection.  Just found out that it, too, is exhibiting the same error.  Although, I'd left it in 'iTunes Match' last night and the first thing I saw when I started it up was "Error:  iTunes is Unavailable. Please try again later".  Plugged my old Popcorn Hour in and it, at least, is working fine.

  • HT1551 My Apple TV Home Only Has 'Computers' And 'Settings'. Isn't There Supposed To Be Youtube And Netflix And Stuff? I signed in to my iTunes account AND Connected to a wifi

Before I updated my Apple TV, It had everything, 'YouTube' , 'Netflix' And the iTunes Store. I just updated it and connected to my WiFi network and signed in to my Itunes account. After that there wasnt anything in the home screen, execpt for 'computers' and 'settings'. Any help?

This always implies the AppleTV is not seeing the internet when it starts up, as it seems to acquire available category content from there.
Restart your router and unplug and restart your AppleTV - does that help?

    Hey griswold4,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The symptoms you mentioned usually relate to network connectivity. The following article may provide a resolution to your issue:

Out of the blue, my AppleTV went to a screen that had two icons, Computers and Settings. Why won't it go the the usual TV screen with viewing options? Help!

Here's what finally worked for me with Apple TV 3rd generation. Out of the box, when setup with wi-fi, it breezed through without any issue. As soon as I powered down and connected it to another tv (same wi-fi network), it got stuck at setting date/time. The remote would help in getting out of it, but the home would only have "Computers" and "Settings" and pretty much useless except for AirPlay. Here's what I did to resolve this:
    1. On your main router, temporarily disable the firewall or set it to the lowest setting allowable (a reboot of the router maybe required).
    2. Restart apple tv via the "restart" option in the "General" option in the main settings menu.
    3. It should breeze through and not show the "Setting date/time" screen.
    4. Once it loads up properly, turn on your fire wall as before  (a reboot of the router maybe required).
I think it worked for me out of the box, but auto-update to the latest software introduced this bug. So, everytime apple tv tries to synch with the time server, this issue will come back. To disable this, I turned off the "auto time synch" option in Settings -> General.
I am fairly confident that I'd be able to use steps 1 through 4 anytime this recurs. Possible scenarios causing recurrence of this issue:
    1. Unplugging the power to apple tv or power failures.
    2. OS updates.
    3. Restoring apple tv using "Restore" or via micro-usb and iTunes to the lastest OS.
Hope this helps. Please post if this works for you.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
There appears to be a large increase in this type of problem at this time, it seems that that there is a problem at Apple's end, but I couldn't at all be sure.
There are no issues being reported at Apple’s System Status page, but this status may yet be updated and it may be you need to try again a little later.
This isn't affecting me here in the UK, where exactly are you.
So far I have noted users in the following locations having similar problems:
    USA
If this is a problem at Apple’s end, it rarely happens, however when it does only Apple can fix it. When this has occurred previously it has usually been resolved in a few hours or slightly more.

  • Why am I only seeing Movies, Computers, and Settings in ATV2?

A few weeks back I started having problems with my Apple TV 2 connecting to Home Sharing.  It would not connect to my iMac, iPhone 4s, or iPad (all items that it used to work flawlessly with).  I decided after trying many things that it was probably my router that was causing the issue, so I purchased an Airport Extreme, and after setting it up everything was once again connecting to one another.
My Apple TV 2 then came upn and said that it needed to update the software, so I did that.  After the update was finished the only things that are showing up on the main page are Movies (shows the 2 recent rentals), Computers, and Settings.  I have tried connecting it with both WiFi and ethernet and still have the same issues.  Any suggestions?

Try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds, or resetting it using the reset option under general. You should also try restarting your router.

    Hello Sophie59
You should be able to see two different tabs when setting up the email if you go to Other > Add Mail Account. Once you enter in the email address and password, you should be at the next screen to provide more details about the email as far as incoming and outgoing servers and at the top there will be a blue section to add it in as a POP or IMAP email account.
