It's Gnome, Jim, but not as we know it!

I'm not very familiar with Gnome, so after installing Gnome 2.6 (with some difficulty, but I installed it eventually), I started reading documentation. This is when I discovered that although I installed both gnome and gnome-extra, all kinds of things are either missing or I just don't know how to enable them:
- for starters, the default desktop comes up with a single, completely blank panel. Missing are the gnome foot, Applications and Actions menus that I believe are supposed to be there by default, as well as the entire bottom panel that I think should be present as well.... I added these myself, but I'm not sure - is it a sign of problems, or a very 'minimalist' default configuration? In which case, minimalism is all well and good, but shouldn't our version of Gnome stick to Gnome defaults?
- Nautilus is supposed to have a side pane. According to Gnome docs I should be able to get it with View->Side Pane. But there is no such option in my View menu.
- according to Gnome docs Nautilus should display jpgs in its own viewer. It doesn't; it calls Gimp instead, and I see no way of changing this.
- To add a bookmark, I should "display the item in the view pane. Choose Bookmarks->Add Bookmark.". .. except my Nautilus has no Bookmarks menu!
- much has been said about improved handling of ftp and other server type connections. Selecting File -> Connect to Server should produce a shortcut on the desktop. It does, but since it never asks for username/password, I can't connect. As I understand this, it is the function of gnome-keyring. I've got gnome-keyring installed, but it doesn't seem to work.
So ... is my installation borked, or what?

Borked? Haha...I can think of another 6 letter word instead. My Gnome was kinda catty-whumpus too when I first installed it. However, I found that blowing away the Gnome hidden directories in my user home directory and re-logging back into Gnome helped, since it would recreate everything for that user at default settings. I think the directories I smoked were "Desktop", ".gnome*", ".gconf*", ".nautilus", and ".metacity".
The moral of that story was that I didn't install Gnome the AL/Pacman preferred way. Which is `pacman -Syu gnome'. I had originally installed individual packages one at a time. Heck, I didn't know what the heck the "sync" option was for...but, I do now.
I recently updated my Gnome to 2.6. I followed the website news advice and installed it that way. The only hitch I had was some .xml file conflict...so, I blew that file away and continued with update. No worries mate....works like a charm now.
* I would tend to believe that you may have follied the way I did initially when I installed Gnome. I din't use the "sync" option. Just blow away those directories, re-login and see if you get the default Gnome settings. If that doesn't work, update to 2.6 the way the website says...

Danish Keyboard Layout working in Gnome but not in Kde

Hi!,
I'm trying to get to work the Danish Keyboard layout in Kde, with no success. In Gnome it works fine, but in Kde (or well, any Qt based app), when I hit å, ø, or try to write accents, I get two white quads instead of the correct character. It works if I write them in a gtk aplication, copy and paste in a kde app.. but...
Does anyone knows what can be possibly happening?
My xorg.conf has
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "dk"
and Kde is configured to use the DK Layout.

Ouh, no.. I have another problem
I want the language (for apps like gcc, or mc) to be english, not danish, so I replaced in rc.conf da_DK.utf8 by en_DK.utf8, and got the language as english, but now.. accents doesn't work anymore. They do work, again, under gnome, but not in kde. Any ideas?

Updateable Report/Pagination - rows found but not displayed

Bear with me if there is a post that covers this, as the SEARCH facility seems to be hanging when I search on Pagination.
I have a SQL Query (PL/SQL Function Body Returning SQL Query) which creates an Updatable Report.
If I run the Query and the selection criteria results in more than one page in the "search results" and then I go to page 2 or page 3, etc and then peform another search that only results in 1 page of "search results", the actual search results will not display, but the pagination will show the number of rows that should be displaying.
For example, I search on Coroner "John Black", which returns 55 rows. The first 50 are displayed. The next 5 are on page 2. If I then searchon Coroner "Jim Bean", 22 rows are returned (all on page 1). If I then search on "John Black" again, and this time, go to page 2 (to see the final 5 rows in the result set) and then search on "Jim Bean", I won't get any data in the report for Jim Bean, but a message showing that there are 22 rows of data. However, I cannot get that data to show (even if I select NEXT or PREVIOUS for the pages.
Then if I go back and select on "John Black", get the same problem. I basically have to sign out completely in order to get this reset.
Note that the problem occurs if you are on a page greater than that of the result set on the next query. For example, if I am on page 3 of 5 pages and perform another selection that has 3 pages, it is fine. But if the result set only has 2 pages, the form becomes confused.
If the "Layout and Pagination" has a "Pagination Scheme" set to "Row Ranges X to Y of Z (no pagination)" I get an error like "Minimum row requested: 2401, rows found but not displayed: 46".
If I use "Row ranges 1-15 16-30 (with set pagination)" I get "1-46" as a hyperlink, which if I click on, will show me the report.
If I use "Row ranges 1-15 16-30 in select list (with pagination) I have a problem.
If I use "Row Ranges X to Y (no pagination) I have problems.
If I use "Row Ranges X to Y of Z (no pagination) I have problems.
If I use "Row Ranges X to Y of Z (with pagination) I have problems.
Basically, the one one that seems to work is those that have a hyperlink. Uing NEXT, PREVIOUS or a select list does not seem to work.
Do you know what is causing this problem?

I have the same issue, but cannot resolve it following above suggestions. I have a report page with search criteria and a "Go" button to submit the search. The branch back to the same page has "reset pagination for this page" checked, but still if run a query that returns just one row after having paged forwards, I get no rows displayed and a pagination link "1-1" that when clicked brings up the selected row.
I tried adding a "Reset Pagination" process to run on submit (unconditionally), and it made no difference.
I am using HTMLDB 2.0.

Why will DVD play on one player but not another??

Hi,
I made an ISO file using devede and then burnt it to a DVD using K3B. The finished DVD will work on a Magnavox player but not a JVC. Is there anything I can do about this??? Do some players have a "must be produced commercially" filter or something???

First, I am assuming you recorded your iso on +R type media. Next, I'm guessing that the player that won't play your DVD is the older of the two players. Some DVD players, especially older ones don't like +R media. If this is the case, here is a possible fix.
Here is a thread on another forum which discuses changing the booktype on your DVD burner. Here is a quote from the original post:

Many standalone Players, HDD recorders/players and games consoles don't like +R media but they are happy enough to play -R or DVD-ROM.
Some drive brands have tools to change this option but others don't. I have found that the easiest way to change your BOOKTYPE setting is to use a small burning tool called IMGBurn which can be found doing a Google search.
Below you can see some screen shots which guide you through changing your BOOKTYPE setting. For this I have used my NEC4551 but IMGBurn supports NU-Tech, Plextor, Ricoh, Samsung, BenQ, LG, Lite-on and NEC.
Once you have changed your BOOKTYPE setting, when you burn a +R/+RW disc it will be burned as a DVD-ROM which is the same as a bought movie and most players are happy to play these.
Since my DVD players are happy with +R media, I haven't tried this. Both of my players are fairly new, and I made sure that +R was listed on the box as one of the formats accepted by that player.
As usual, try this at your own risk.

If the third-party support info and help does not get it working for you, you can also use OS X Mavericks recovery or reinstall to repair your startup disk or reinstall OS X 10.9.

(Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD." Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)

Swap images works in preview but not in browser

Hi everyone,
I am attempting to get a swap images to work. It works in the preview window but not when I preview it in the browser. When I open it in a browser the states seem to "cycle" through really quickly in rapid succession. I have linked my png file for you to see. Any thoughts?

Your swap image slice is set to Animated GIF. Change it in the Optimize panel to plain GIF or PNG 8

I'd like to get in on this...
My external iSight works in iChat, but NOT quicktime 7 pro when i try to make a movie recording. No audio, no video, nothing. But, iChat works. This is on a brand new mac pro with the latest leopard. Any ideas????

With no other video capable apps running and your working iSight connected and turned on when you launch QT 7 Pro, try these suggestions to see whether one of them fixes your problem:
(0) Try all suggestions applicable to your system from Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.
(1) Check that your QuickTime Player > Preferences > Recording settings are correct.
(2) Repair Permissions and test to see if iSight works with QT Pro now.
(3) Disconnect all peripheral and test again to check for hardware or software conflicts.
(4) Download and reinstall QuickTime 7.4 for Leopard. Repair permissions and test movie recording.
If you must post back for other suggestions, please clarify and expand on your QT problem. Please be specific. For example, can you see but not execute the QuickTime Player > File > New Movie Recording menu command? Can you execute the menu command but find that the recording window does not open? Does the recording window open but you find the "Record" button is not clickable? Etc.?
Also please tell us whether you found that QuickTime is the ONLY problem app in EVERY user account you tried when you used Apple's Troubleshooting suggestions.
Finally, if you currently have ANY other problems with your Mac, please describe them all.

Gnome-Shell in Gnome 3.2 not working after upgrade

Hi guys,
after upgrading from Pacman, Gnome-Shell does not start up correctly. After login the Gnome-Keyring pops up (as usual) and after entering my password Gnome-Shell crashes ("oops.. something went wrong bla bla").
I could resolve this problem by deinstalling Empathy.
So basically I just wanted to inform others who may experience the same problem. Anyone knows why Empathy does not work correctly?

I don't have this problem, but I have issues with Empathy's new clutter-based call UI not coming up. May be the problem is with clutter??

[SOLVED] (gnome) NetworkManager does not start on login

Hello!
Like the title says, the NetworkManager utility does not start with gnome on login. Every time I log in I have to start it manually by going into the terminal and running su, then running NetworkManager. I have googled and searched in the wiki, but did not find a good answer. Some threads talk about doing something with the gnome-session but it did not work for me.
So, which conf file do I need to edit to have it start on startup?
I hope I provided enough information.

[SOLVED] gnome-keyring-daemon not loading SSH key password on login

I have a SSH key that I use extensively that has a cumbersome password that I prefer not typing when possible. I know that gnome-keyring-daemon is supposed to have the ability to save the SSH key password, unlock the Passwords:logins, and act as an SSH agent; however, that functionality appears to be missing. There's a strong possibility that I broke this trying to get other things working in GNOME.
Is there a D-Bus or PolicyKit option that I need to change?
Solution:
Turns out this is now handled by pam. The password key store would unlock automatically if I used gnome-screensaver but failed to unlock on X startup so I installed GDM.

More info. I have been able to get gnome-keyring-daemon to ask for and store the password when I first use the SSH key. The dialog box for entering the SSH key password does not have an option to save the password indefinitely (I forget the exact verbiage) and I can't find anything in Seahorse to do the same.

I am new to Acrh and cant install gnome3. I am now using xfce4, which i dont like and dont think it is alternative to gnome2. Anyway, since i cant install gnome2, i wanted to try gnome3 but failed. After i installed it and after i run it from gdm, it doesnt show anything other than AWN and gnome's default shortcuts doesnt work too (ctrl+alt+t, alt+f2, etc.). I tried to reinstall it but agian no help. When i run apps from AWN, program runs, but it doesnt have wondow, i tried to enable "window-decoration" from CCSM (compiz-config-settings-manager)but no help again... I feel like gnome-shell is not running...
Please help...
EDIT: i think i found smth: when i run "gnome-shell" in terminal, it gives me this:
gnome-shell: error while loading shared libraries: libffi.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
