According to most website the Centre of the Sun is around 15Million °C
Well, some people in the office sometimes complain about the temperature and make silly comments like "It's hotter than the SUN!".  Well normally i just laugh.
Well today might be the day these people are right, we had a new Datto device installed on Friday to start taking control of the Servers here and well this is what is being displayed!
Yes that's 4Billion °C!!!! Hope the AC in the server room can cope with this heat :)

  • Qosmio X300 - one Geforce 9800 GTS runs hotter than the other

Hi.....Does anyone have a clue why 1 of my 2 gfx cards seems to be running alot hotter than the other? I would assume they would both be roughly the same temp. This is an example...Nvidia Defaul @ 1680x1050
    512MB GeForce 9800M GTS (Toshiba) 63 C
    ForceWare version 186.42
    512MB GeForce 9800M GTS (Toshiba) 49 C
    ForceWare version 186.42
    256MB GeForce 9400M G (Toshiba) 56 C
    ForceWare version 186.42
    SLI Disabled
When i exited playing F1 2010 yesterday, one of the cars was 90C and the other about 58C......Im sure that isnt right. !!!!
Also i see that it says SLI disabled....again i dont understand this, as i thought my rig automatically switched to SLI mode when needed.
These temp readings was taken from the program speccy.
My laptop is a Toshiba Qosmio X300-15U....running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. 4gb ram. Q6600@2ghz.
Any help would be really apprieciated.
    Thanks

Well i'm sorry you've had such clueless replies to your question.....if i had a cent for everytime a "regular" toshiba contributor says "use compressed air" or "only use Toshiba display drivers blah..blah`.....i'd be a very rich man!
The simple reason why only 1 of your 9800m gts cards is hot is because it is the only card being utilised in most games especially recent ones like F1 2010.
You see the toshiba graphics driver you have installed on your Qosmio is nearly 2 years old-and it doesn't contain any SLI profiles for games that have been released after this driver was created (mid 2009).
Just because you have 2 Nvidia GPUs in the laptop it does not mean that they are being utilised everytime-in fact it is totally dependent on having an SLI profile for specific program/game within the driver itself.
If you open the Nvidia control panel and go to advance settings/manage programs you can scroll down a list of sli profiles for programs installed on you machine and also view a complete list of all profiles within the driver.
It is possible to add you own sli profiles on this screen by browsing for a games executable and adding it to the list of preinstalled profiles.
However in my experience this rarely,if ever, produces much of a performance increase and can sometimes cause instability-and is no substitute for Nvidias own SLI profiles.
So.. the only way you can gain an SLI boost in games is by having the latest driver with the latest profiles....but wait i hear you say..
Toshiba haven't updated the driver for our laptop since 2009!!!
Yes thats the massive downside of owning a gaming laptop especially one as unique as Qosmio x300-just see my post in the Gaming forum-`Toshiba display drivers and what they don't want you to know' and i'm not gonna go into all that again.
All i say is that you can get some great advice on using modified Nvidia drivers on Laptopvideo2GO.com and if you go to the forums and look under Nautis1100 Hybrid and optimus drivers you'll find a new thread especially created for owners of qosmio X300s.
    Good luck!

  • Quad G5 - One processor runs 20 degreesF hotter than the other!

I use an app called Hardware Monitor to keep tabs on the various sensors in my G5. Today, for apparently no reason at all, CPU A (both cores) runs 20 degreesF hotter than CPU B!!! Not to mention 20 degreesF hotter than they ever did in the 4 months I've had the system. It does not matter if the computer is idle or if I give it a heavy work load, CPU A is always about 20 degrees hotter (it varies about 5 degrees -- for example, A is 122.3dF right now, and B is 103.0dF). I did a clean OS install on a different drive and took readings again, sure enough, it is the same. I removed all peripherals, check inside for dust, debris, etc... I can find no reason why this would happen! So far it has not been a problem, all the fans and pumps run at normal speeds. In the past my temps varied from about 98dF when idle, to about 150dF when under heavy load. CPU A now is 122dF - 165dF! Anyone have any ideas?

This is only speculation, but it may because your coolant is not flowing at peak efficiently. What could cause this? There are micro-channels the coolant flows through to cool the processors. They may be starting to clog up for some reason or another. If the processors get to hot, the unit will go into thermal shutdown, so you don't need to worry -- yet. I would keep your eye on it and if the unit shuts down while you are working on it, check your logs for lines with "thermal" in them and get the unit looked at. Your LCS may need to be replaced at that point.
Also, make sure you have/get AppleCare!

  • Does the new iPad air 2 get hotter than the previous iPads?

I Have noticed that the new iPad Air 2 seems to be warmer than my 4th. Generation ipad. It is not so hot that I can't hold it, but I definitely notice a difference from the air 2 & the 4th. Generation iPad.
    Thanks for any feed back.

Hi The iPad Air is very slim I retuned mine for a refund viberates on speaker battery not lasting And yes it did get warmer and it's a bit flimsy. Got iPad Air 1 now 32G £359.00 now was £479.00 No problems. Cheers Brian

  • CPU A Is hotter then the other

i check my iStat a lot and my system monitors and I have noticed that my Mac Mini has 2 CPU A's and the second one is always about 10 degrees or more hotter than the other one and everything else that is measured. It says CPU A and CPU A and the second one runs hottest. Is this normal? and if not what can I do?

Cores in Core Duo, Core 2 Duo and dual processor systems all tend to run at differing loads, and thus differing temperatures. What you're seeing is the two cores in your CPU, and more than likely if you were to run something like MenuMeters with the CPU monitor switched on and set to show the cores separately, you'd notice that one core is generally handling marginally higher loads.
That would mean the temperatures you see are normal. On the few instances I monitor internal temperatures on my systems, I see broadly similar results to yours for the same reason. As such, I'd say this is nothing at all for you to be concerned with - and indeed, that there is not much value in running such software as iStat since it gives you information that really doesn't have a useful context. If you find that the system doesn't correctly run the fan up to high speed when it should, that would be a good sign of a problem!

  • It's gonna be hotter than my metal PowerBook G4?

One thing I learned to deal with when I upgraded from my iBook G3 to my PowerBook G4 12" is that the aluminum casing did get hot..and I mean HOT! But I would say that most of the time it was just warm, even "cool" when just checking email for a short time...certainly not hot when it had just been sitting there in sleep mode connected to the AC adapter.
I was hoping returning to the plastic casing would mean not getting scorched and sweaty from a hot metal underside. If you are telling me this MacBook is WAYYYY hotter than my PowerBook, man, that sounds bad! Hopefully I will be lucky with my new MacBook.

    Note:
"hot" = temperature is high enough to cause pain or at least discomfort
"warm" = not cool and maybe sweat-inducing, but no real discomfort/pain
Hi there! I have seen one MacBook so far, the black 2.0 GHz model, and it is much cooler than the PowerBook. I had a 12" PowerBook before (1.33 GHz) which, under some circumstances, got hot. When I say hot I mean pain.
Since I have had experiences with four MacBook Pros so far, two 15" and two 17", I was very interested in the heat problems. All of the MBPs are hot. If you stress them for a while, they will burn you. They will probably not cause injuries, but it sure does not feel good. However, the MacBook, as previously mentioned a 2.0 GHz machine, did not get hot at all. It did get warm – after 15 minutes of 100% CPU load it actually got very warm – but not as hot as the MBPs and not even as hot as my old PowerBook.
In conclusion: at 100% CPU load (2x100%, actually) for quite some time, you will have a very warm computer in your lap and you might feel a bit sweaty. However, it will not get hot ("HOT!") like the PowerBooks did. The MacBook does not seem to have the "hot upper left corner" either and the area above the function keys is just rather warm, instead of painfully hot.
Hope this answers your question somewhat. Even though this is a rather subjective matter, I think that I, with confidence, can assure you that the MacBook is at least not hotter than the PowerBook. I just wish that they could do something about the MacBook Pros... I am writing this with the computer in my lap and I know that if I had some background process chewing CPU for a while, it would start to hurt.

  • CPU2 hotter than CPU1... When to worry?

    G'day,
My recently acquired June04 1.8GHz dual processor PowerMac G5 has 1 CPU constantly running at least 10°C hotter than the other CPU.
I've just opened the computer up and had a look... and there are no screws holding either of the CPUs/heatsinks in place.
(I know - not good to be running the computer like that!!!)
Would this alone be a likely cause of the overheating? (Well - and - what IS overheating - at what temperature do you start to worry)
    Thanks
    cosmic

    Hi-
75ºC is probably a good temp under load.
I don't think temps under 80ºC are much to worry about.
Variations between CPU temps are common, though usually a bit closer together.
One CPU will typically be hit with system load more than the other, so one being hotter would be normal.
Also, the upper CPU gets an extra dose from the normal physics of heat.....
However, there should be 4 screws holding the processor heat sink assembly to the board.
They are either Phillips or 2.5 mm Hex.
Check airflow, cleanliness, and check the function of fans/temp using an app like Temperature Monitor from Marcel Bresink.
iStat is another app to use.
Watch Console/Logs for any thermal runaway entries.
Might use Activity Monitor to see which CPU is getting worked.
That, or the Processor pref pane from CHUD.

I gave the newest Express 11/08 a try on my laptop. I found that Studio 12 is still
much faster than the express version at least on my laptop. See the old messge below.

I think poor performance is a bug for a compiler. Sun should fix it.Thanks for noting :)
This has already been filed as a bug - http://bugs.sun.com/view_bug.do?bug_id=6735472.
And as you can see it is even already fixed.
Unluckily it missed Express 11/08 integration time slot (by a mere week or so).
It is reasonable to expect it to be available at the next Express/whatever release happens next.

  • My battery seems to be making the computer hotter than before and it actually is too hot to keep on my lap.  Does anyone know what this means?.

My computer seems to be much hotter lately when it is on my lap.  Does this ean I need a new battery or is there a problem with the computer?  Thanks.

If your machine is noticeably hotter than you're accustomed to even when running on a hard, flat surface, have a look at this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473
You may have something running in the background that's using a lot of processor cycles and heating things up unnecessarily (and running your battery down faster and making your fan(s) louder than usual).

  • MacBook in the sun?  Hotness..

Any experiences on using the MacBook in the sun when thinking of hotness? I'd imagine the black macbook will be way hotter than a white one. Can the macbook be damaged by using it in the sun? Im also guessing theres a warning in the manual about not using it in direct sunlight..

We are having VERY hot weather over here in the UK at the moment, and I used my MacBook for about 5 hours today, accross morning and afternoon, outside, in direct sunlight.
Apart from having problems viewing the screen, the temperature was OK. Yes, the case seemed to get hotter than normal (yikes!), but using Coreduotemp, the CPU was not much hotter than normal, ~70 whilst web browsing compared to my usual 65

  • Choosing iMac model.  Nvidia 8800 hotter than ATI 2600 ?

I'm just about to buy a 2.8GHz 24" iMac and am trying to decide whether to upgrade to the NVidia 8800 Graphics card or not.
I'm mainly trying to make it as future-proof as I can by putting in a higher spec card now, and also I guess Snow Leopard (with OpenCL) should be able to make much better use of the NVIDIA card than the ATI one.
I'm happy with the cost involved, but I'm concerned that the 8800 (being a more powerful card) may run hotter in normal (i.e. non-gaming) use compared to the 2600.
Could anyone offer an opinion on this? Do you think I'm likely to experience more fan noise with an 8800 fitted compared to a 2600?
    Thanks
    Steve

It does run hotter, fans are still inaudible unless right next to it (ear pressed where it will feel the heat).... now here's the thing: The fan speed won't increase noticeably even under extreme load.
To answer your question, if I focus on it, I can hear the fans (right now). If I reach up and touch the top (around top left) it's warm to the touch, and I can barely feel a warm breeze coming out
If i were to fire up Second Life (game) for about 10-20 minutes - it gets uncomfortably warm to the touch along the top edge (quick), and I could feel but barely hear more air being pushed out.
Me and a friend launched Second Life from openGL profiler - she (ATI 2600, 2.8/4m) was hitting around 40-50 FPS, I was hitting 120-180 (these were on a private estate (somewhat controlled environmentals), both set to level 3 quality - kinda apples to apples as best as we could).
I can't really comment on the openCL enhancements to come, It's a severely crippled 8800 (GS) - so I'd not put a lot of weight behind the OpenCL acceleration. It's not a Quadro.
I was under no illusions that it was a gaming machine or a production 3D/graphics workstation tho - it's good enough for casual gaming/semi-pro use with some decent capabilities, don't expect too much from it tho.
There is one of the mac fan sites that tracks the average days of refresh - roughly when to expect the next big "refresh" from Apple - maybe someone else can remember where it is... (something like mid jan/late spring roughly - with some exceptions).
Last thing I'd want is to have ordered the 8800 as a CTO (not refundable) to find out 5 days later a 9800 with 1 gig on a slick nvidia chipset was replacing it. And that they had replaced the mighty mouse.
The iMac 8800/3.06 is the quietest machine I've worked with, power wise - even when it is cranked to the hilt, and it gets hot, uncomfortably hot (that makes me jittery - which is why I'm glad I've got AppleCare). I could run SMC fan control or something to keep it cooler, but I'd prefer to see if Apple's got it right.
Anyhow... Good luck with it all. I plan on selling mine - maybe not tho, it would make a cool fishtank. (I'm learning I'm just not an Apple person, tho I'm still trying).

  • Implementation-specific documentation for the Sun/Oracle Java SE ?

    Hi,
Some places in the Java SE API specification call for platform-specific documentation. For example, the specification of the method await of class java.util.concurrent.locks.Condition says:
    "Implementation Considerations
The current thread is assumed to hold the lock associated with this Condition when this method is called. It is up to the implementation to determine if this is the case and if not, how to respond. Typically, an exception will be thrown (such as IllegalMonitorStateException) and the implementation must document that fact. "
So, implementation-specific documentation is expected to exist in addition to the API specification documentation. Sure, sentences beginning with "Typically..." suggest that that is what the Sun/Oracle reference implementation does, so the behavior of Sun/Oracle implementation can be guessed in many cases... yet sometimes troubling uncertainty remains.
If implementation-specific documentation for the implementation exists, please let me know.
I apologize if I chose an inappropriate forum for this question, but there seems to be no forum for discussing documentation arrangements.

If you want to look at the implementation sepcific documentation, the best place to look is the source.
The reason the docuementation is written generically is because they want you to write portable code, rather than rely on the specific implementation detail of the one you are using.
Even if you don't intend to use another vendor, you might want to upgrade in the future and Java 7 or 8 many change its implementations provided it meets the specification.
