It's just fantastic

When iPad was announced I thought '"Why?". Then I wondered what the display would be like as it is a lower resolution than even current iPhone. Then I bought one ( after reading posts and asking questions on this forum)
Now I have it it just makes sense. Apple have done it again. They are ahead of the game and have produced something fantastic which will no doubt continue to improve. It's fast and everything looks great on it. If you are thinking of getting one I doubt you'd be disappointed.
I just wanted to post to pass on my experience of this device.

I would have to agree, I am very happy with my 64GB, 3G model. Got it June 16th and it has performed flawlessly. I even fired off an email to Steve Jobs to let him know how pleased I am. I'm sure he hears plenty of complaints, so I just wanted to share my positive experience.
Hope all that are experiencing trouble with it come to have a better experience in the near future.

It just can't be this hard?

I have a wiki, blogs, webmail and web calendar all working just fantastically on my XServe (10.6.4). When you type in wiki.domain.com, you go to the XServe page where you can log in and access wikis, blogs, etc. We have webmail hosted via SSL so you need to access https... to get the mail link to work.
Aliases all work, external DNS all works, it's just great.
Now...all I want to do...is set up a part of the server to host websites by kids and faculty (the wiki is great, but it can't do some stuff that iWeb can do). We don't want to get fancy with CSS style sheets, asp pages, SSIs, CGI scripts - yet - I'm just trying to get it set up to work correctly.
I have read the Web Tech Admin documentation but I guess I'm just too stupid to understand what it's trying to tell me.
In Server Admin I have created a new site and pointed it to an entirely different folder on my XServe - different than that folder used by the Wiki, etc.
I have set an alias pointing "iweb.domain.com" to my XServe - the only server hosting web services.
When I type "iweb.domain.com" in Safari, I get the wiki login page. It seems to me that if I set the alias to point to the correct server (verified in dig and host) AND I have configured the site to use an entirely different file folder on the server...why am I getting the wiki page? (Yes, I reset EVERYTHING in Safari.)
In looking at how the wiki was configured (I didn't do it - I inherited it) I see a Users folder with all my users listed. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Users folder in the separate "iweb domain" folder I created with all the users' names in there and in those folders all their website content would be stored? Sounds ideal but darned if I can figure out from the documentation how to do that. I thought it would be automatically set up when I set up the site but I guess not.
The second problem, of course, is how to "hook" iWeb on the kids' laptops to point to that location on the server so that their site content can be uploaded.
Wouldn't it be great to type something like "iWeb.domain.com/~username" and go right to the site?
Wouldn't it be EVEN BETTER to type "username.domain.com" and go right to their site?
Look...I'm not opposed to reading how to do this if the material is reasonably intelligible. Of course being a one person IT shop that's stretched to the gills, the only SPARE time I have to read is at home.
It doesn't seem to me like this should be rocket science, but it sure looks like it is.
Is this something I can tackle in a reasonably short period of time or just tell the kids it can't be done?

Yeah, I tried that early on.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Webserver folder on the boot volume.
When I look at the settings for the wiki, the "site" is set up to use /Library/Webserver/Documents as the "Web Folder" under the "General" tab, but under "Settings" --> "Wiki" the folder on my RAID array is listed as the "Data Store".
One of my concerns is putting ANYTHING on that solid state hard drive I bought with my XServers (BTW, NEVER do that - if I only knew then what I know now!!!). I'm worried that it will fill up with extraneous data and then the server will shut down!
I've even tried using different ports for the extra website, but I get the same page that I have with my wiki but everything is grayed out and a message says "No Web Services are Configured" - well, the only web services I can configure are Wiki, Mail, Calendar, and Blogs.
Just as an aside, why is the documentation so worthless? I set up three separate websites @ InMotion Hosting in about 15 minutes. Of course, it's not my webserver. I swear, it would probably be a **** of a lot easier to buy a bunch of websites from them than fiddle and futz around with this. I could have been up and running a month ago!
Apple does some things really GREAT. Some of the other stuff requires a degree in rocket science.

I have Adobe Photoshop and i need a little help with it cause it does what it wants, nothing happens as i want, interface is as intuitive, as my mother is a president of America.
I have drawn a framу that i want to be part visible and part transparent. It means upper part i want to be visible, in the center it begins to become slightly transparent and the lower part is completely invisible.
I've found options of gradients, so i thought it will help me but wait - it is an adobe product, how could it help me if my mind still hasn't been screwed by this "awesome" photoshop ? And i was right - when i set both ends of gradient to be transparent (opacity to 0) my gradient became blue at all. Its awesome. Just fantastic. Cause in the gradients menu i see many different gradients but when i click at it in the left upper corner i see the whole blue rectangle that means my gradient will be filled with only one color.
What do you Adobe think when you claim such a high price for product that just does not show me gradient that i clicked ?
Do you really think that it worth reading 2-3 tutorial books to just understand where the heck in this "very simple" interface are gradient options hidden ?
So, how can i do frame that from center gradually becomes transparent ?

The tone you take seems regrettable.
Anyway, if you have created the frame as a Layer of its own you can add a Layer Mask to partially hide ir (with the Gradient Tool, Painting Tools, …).
Otherwise for maintaining easier editing I would recommend using a Gradient Layer (Layer > New Fill Layer > Gradient).
By clicking in the Gradient preview field you can raise the »Gradient Editor«, where you can add and edit Color - and Transparancy Stops.

How to connect my laptop to the internet using my iphone?

I've just change from my former Nokia N95 to the iphone 4 (on Tmobile Germany) and I'm totally thrilled because this new device is just fantastic!
However, I could easily connect my macbook via bluetooth to connect to the internet occasionally. I couldn't yet figure out how I can achive this with my iphone?
Any hints would be very welcome!

The links you stated say that I would have to contact my carrier to enable a certain "Tethering"-option, whatever that is. This would cost me another 5€ extra per MONTH for an option that I probably don't need at all - I don't need tethering or anything, just internet-dialup.
I guess they can't charge a monthly fee for a phone feature
To make it clear:
I don't need extra data volume (I got a flat already), so there is no need upgrade my tariff. I only want to connect my phone to my macbook and to dialup to the internet, just like I did with my former phones.
No "Tethering" or whatever needed, just Internet dial-up. How do I do that?

With Premiere CC when I try to do a selection (click... drag... release the click) very often it stop way before the end of the move I'm swinging the Magic Mouse. I taught that the mouse clicking was defective and went to get a new Magic Mouse after lots of frustration. Today, I have an edit to do it it does the SAME thing !!

Opened all the lights and taught I've trow the new mouse to the garbage and was using the defective mouse again... no !! - ??
Actually, the bran new mouse is doing the same thing. What I understand after investigating on the motion and watching carefully my fingers !! - is that when I click I have to keep my finger at the EXACT same place on the mouse... drag and release and it's fine. If I click by pushing on the mouse and my finder is moving of a 1/32th of a millimeter, it will release and my selection will be to redo. You can understand my frustration ! - 75$ later... same problem, but I know that if I click with about 5 pounds of pressure and trying to pass my finger through the plastic of the mouse, it you stay steady and make it !
The problem is that scrolling is enable while clicking and it bugs.
How to disable it ??

sorry but the Magic Mouse is just useless with the new Adobe Premiere CC and since I'm not the only one but can't find answer this is really disappointing. This mouse is just fantastic and now I have to swap from a USB mouse to the Magic Mouse every times I do some editing. My USB mouse if hurting my hand somehow and I want to got back to the Magic Mouse asap. Please - for sure there is a simple solution !

Calendar List View on iPad

On my iPhone I have list view permanently turned on, so I have a rolling daily simple list of events to easily scroll through and manage my daily activities.
On my iPad, which you would think would have an even BETTER calendar view, not so much...I can GET list view turned on by selecting the magnifying glass, but you wind up with this little scrolling area the runs down the upper right hand corner of the screen. The rest of the screen is wasted with any of four other useless views.
I've looked into calendar app alternatives and downloaded/purchased a few but nothing seems to provide that simple rolling list of daily events like my iPhone, in something that makes use out of a decent portion of the iPad's screen. And is it my imagination or did this list view used to work, or work better, before one of the recent iOS upgrades? I see some chatter about this but I'm not sure.
Bottom line - how do I get a decent sized list view rolling calendar of events for the iPad, much the same as my Calendar is setup on my iPhone?

The LAST place that I would ever have expected a solution to these issues?
MIcrosoft. Yes, Microsoft, I kid you not.
The new Microsoft for Outlook iOS app has a Calendar "agenda" layout for iPad that's BETTER than the agenda view that comes with the stock iOS Calendar app on the iPhone. The overall look and feel of Outlook for iOS is just fantastic. They're still working through a few very minor tweaks but get this - you can actually contact them directly, through the app, lodge complaints, make suggestions, etc. and they will get back to you, I'm talking actual tech support resources, via messaging within the app, for real, in less than a day.
MIcrosoft. Go figure.

Nano syncronisation with Ourlook calendar

Although contacts sync well with the Nano I cannot get calendar sync to work. I get the error message "Ipod Nano cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (50). Anyone got any ideas or had a similar problem? Other than that it is just fantastic!

My take on the new MBP

Hi all,
I thought I would give you guys and gals my opinion on the new MBP.
Firstly let me explain that I bought my MBP to replace my old PB G4 17" 1.67Ghz model, so as you can probably imagine it's a fairly big upgrade for me.
I have also been using Apple stuff for 20 years and have spent a small fortune on their products.
I am a web designer and a photographer, an amateur photographer I hasten to add!
The main software I use on my machines are Flash, Photoshop, Aperture, Dreamweaver, Final Cut etc. Without these I am lost.
Okay down to the nitty gritty, I have been reading forums all over the net and heard a lot of people moaning about these new machines, I do appreciate it may not be to some people's liking for whatever reason but please note this is just my opinion on the new MBP's.
I have the 2.4Ghz version with no RAM upgrade as yet.
My first opinion when getting it out of the box was 'Wow', these machines really do look nice, the colour of course is the same as old and it's difficult to explain why they look so nice, maybe it's because they are thinner, maybe it's because they are moulded, I really don't know but I do know that with most Apple products you cannot appreciate them until you've seen them in the flesh.
Opening the lid, well this was a revelation it looks absolutely stunning, simple, elegant and the screen (I know what most people think) is absolutely superb. Let me talk about the screen a little, now I know why there are different complaints about this and it generally boils down to calibration issues for pro photographers and people who need to print professionally. I of course had the matte screen on my 17" PB and can tell you now that it really used to annoy me when I was outside as I could not see the thing at all. On many occasions I wanted to sit out in the garden during the summer and do some work but was unable to. I have a computer upstairs in my office and use my MBP downstairs in the living room, this allows me to carry on doing work and still chat with my girlfriend downstairs. One of the major problems I do have is that the sun (especially in the winter months when it's much lower) shines directly through the window and beams nicely onto my MBP. With my PB I used to have to close the blind (much to my girlfriends annoyance) otherwise it was impossible to work with but with my new machine I can see the screen perfectly without closing it. In fact I am sitting in that very position now with the sunlight beaming through and it's no problem. I'm not going to say there is no reflection at all but it's hardly noticeable and I can definitely say with hand held on my heart that the screen is fantastic whether you are in direct sunlight or night. My girlfriend has the MB (the previous model) and she has a glossy screen, I'm not sure what Apple have done but the glossy screens on these new ones are much better.
The Keyboard.
I know some people don't like the chicklet keyboard but I have no problems with them. I actually prefer them to the older style but I guess that's personal preference. The backlight is absolutely fantastic, it's one of my favourite things on this machine. My old PB had a backlight keyboard but due to the silver keys and white lettering it was near on impossible to see at certain angles, even when looking at it directly it was nothing to write home about. The new backlight on the MBP is just fantastic, I can't say enough good things about it, you have to see it for yourself.
Trackpad.
Mmmmm, really love the look and the size, it makes other trackpads look totally archaic. However I'm not too sure about the whole clicking thing. I am not having problems that others have mentioned about the click not registering or taking time to register. To me the click works as well and as efficiently as a standard button but it is harder to press down and noisier. Apple mentioned that they spent many many hours just getting the click sound right but I think they could have done much better with this. It's the only thing on the machine I am not totally convinced about and could definitely be improved but it's certainly not a deal breaker.
Battery Life
Seems okay at the moment, I probably get around 3 hours with it but as with most Apple products this improves over time.
General Use.
I have had it since launch and am over the moon with it. The speed is fantastic and it does exactly what it sets out to do. Whatever anyone says (and yes it is expensive) this IS (in my opinion) a brilliant piece of kit. It's fast, it's responsive and it looks fantastic. You would be hard pushed to find a better laptop on the market but of course you'll have to pay the price.
I urge you all before passing comment on these new MBP's to go and check one out and see for yourself how good they really are. I know there's nothing like testing one at home when doing your own work but I'm sure that you will be surprised at just how good these machines are and that some of the comments you may have thought originally will soon be forgotten.

Im going from a 1.25ghz PB with only 512mb ram to the new MBP with 4gb
of ram. Talk about a major upgrade (yes!!) As a fellow web/multimedia designer
I know I will benefit from this upgrade. I really hope to be more productive
with having dreamweaver,photoshop,flash etc all open at once. A sImple RAM upgrade
could have solve some of my problems wIth my current PB...but this new machine is just
beautiful and durable and will really help me work easier. My current PB will be my side project and back up for now. 5 years I've waited to upgrade........ and glad i did.

Trying to Export Details Column as Text Files

In the bin, where all the information is columned regarding (on the right hand side) regarding duration/in/out... and all the other information...
Is there a way to export only that information as a text file of any sort? I have a feature film's length worth of footage, and I'm trying to create a list of all the available shots we have for the crew, what master tape they were captured from, their in and out points, and all that...
(As opposed to print screening the whole thing...)
Any help would be just fantastic and save me an incredible amount of time (or confirm I have to spend an incredible amount of time)

Export "batch list" will give you a tab delimited text file that can be imported in to a spread sheet. Hide or add columns in the browser for further control.

Photo web page creation

I need some help trying to create a web page of photo thumbnails with blow-up larger images:
1) I want to create a contact sheet type of web page of multiple photo thumbnails.
2) When you click the photo it opens into a small window or "blow-up" version of the thumbnail. (Clicking the thumbnail does NOT take you to a new page with the full size image).
3) The blow-up photo has a circle and X that will close the blow-up window.
I've already figured out how create pages of thumbnails that will take you to a new page with the full size image. I'm trying to create the effect where you never leave the main page, the thumbnails just blow-up into small windows that can be closed again.
Apple uses this effect a lot with photos and movie clips on their page. An example of what I am trying to do can be found on the iLife/iPhoto/MobileMeGallery info page at Apple.
If you look to the right just under the main large banner images, there is a grey box titled "iPhoto Showcase." If you click one of the thumbnails there, the picture blows out to a larger size of the image, but doesn't take you to another page. The blow-up image has a little circle and X at the top left to close the window. Main page is still visible behind the blow-up window.
I'm using a fairly new MacBook with OS 10.5, Aperture 2.0, iWeb '08. I don't have a .Mac or MobileMe account yet. I'm a recent convert from the Darkside, so right now I use google's Picasa Web Albums and google's website creator for my site. If I can get this to work, I'll make the switch MobileMe once the early .Mac conversion kinks get worked out.

Does UK hosting with Business Catalyst include VAT? Can it be paid for per year?

I have been using Adobe Muse for about a year - LOVE IT! I'm starting to get professional business's as clients who obviously want quotes for their websites and hosting. I would like to stick with Business Catalyst for hosting...their online help support (chat) is just fantastic.
Anyhoo, there is no effective price structure for this. It is all in US Dollas which is taking me a bloomin decade to convert. And, do the prices include VAT? It doesn't say anywhere. Can the plans be paid for annualy? It seems very unhelpful on the Adobe website.
Also, please tell me if I am misunderstanding...Adobe can bill the clients for the hosting. Which is great. But obviously I am a business and put my percentage on top. So how would that work?
Its a long ol' curve to learning something 100%..any help or advice here would be much appeciated. Thanks.

Bluetooth sync on ios7

This is not a question but a tip in case someone didnt notice.
Apple has finally done it, finally listened to our requests.
Bluetooth sync on ios 7 absolutely ROCKS!!!!!
Videos, apps, music, and even GAMES sync PERFECTLY!!!!!!
Ive tested both on iphone 5 and ipad mini and its absolutely great!!!!
Gaming without the chord of the earphones, is just fantastic!!!
Apple, listen to us more often and #1 is where you'll be for a long time!!!!
How about a 5" screen on the next iphone????

They may have barely fixed the audio/video sync issues on bluetooth headphones while creating another problem like the one you mentioned, but the sync problem still remains with the audio system in vehicles. I do not know if others are having the same issue with their car stereos but I am pretty sure they do because my car, being a 2013 model, has the audio delay during bluetooth playback. Also, since iOS7 update, even playing via USB connection has a slight delay now. Delay in USB is tolerable(only fraction of a second) but delay in bluetooth(about 2 seconds)is just too frustrating.

IPad and Movie Syncing iTunes

Hey Apple Community,
I recently had an iPad 4th gen for Christmas and it is awesome.
I've used iCloud to back up apps and so on, and have been using it with great ease.
I've also tried the Home Sharing which is just fantastic and I love the fact I can listen to music and watch videos that are stored on my iMac anywhere in my house.....but
I'm trying to add a movie onto my iPad (ios6) through iTunes 11.
Usually, this is done by going to the Movie Tab, Sync Movie, Select Movie, Apply, Sync and Bob's your Uncle, done.
I'm not sure if I've missed something or things have changed, but that doesn't work anymore.
The movie is on the ipad, with space taken up, but with zero upload time, and on the ipad the movie has this icon next to it.
If someone can help me out, that would be great.

Just to add one more thing;
Yes, the movie has been ripped from a DVD and put onto iTunes, but the same thing happens to a video downloaded via iTunes.

Moving Numbers Tables to Pages '08

Hi guys,
I've used Numbers to create some tables that were larger than 8.5x11. To fit them on a single sheet, I used the Content Scale slider. Works like a charm.
Now, when I go to copy one of these tables to put it in Pages, I get the original, full-size version of the table when I paste it. Needless to say, that does not work at all - the tables are all out of whack and spread across multiple pages.
How do you copy a Numbers table to Pages if the Numbers table is scaled down below 100%? I want the table to look exactly the same in Pages as it does in Numbers. And yes, I've already sent Apple feedback to let them know that this is a problem.
But while I wait for Numbers/Pages '09, does anyone have a workaround that doesn't involve PDFs?

Thanks for the reply, but the problem is not empty rows and columns. When I created the tables I used 14 point Myriad Pro. The table (which is an income statement) is too large to fit on a single page at that font size. I did not worry about it, however, because I planned to just scale it down to make it fit.
The real problem is that when you copy a table from Numbers, you get the table as it appears in the "Normal" view, NOT as it appears in the "Page Layout" view. Hence, when you paste it, the table is no longer scaled down like it was in Numbers' Page Layout view. That's infuriating - it's like setting your font to Helvetica and having it come out of your printer in Courier New! It makes the entire content scaling feature in Numbers useless if you plan to use your spreadsheets outside of that app.
What's really frustrating is that so much of Numbers is utterly great! It has so many features that are just fantastic and make my life easy. But for each of those features, there's a basic, fundamental item like copying scaled-down tables to Pages or double-line cell borders that is missing. And the real shame is that none of it will be fixed before Numbers '09.

Calling FLV's in xml data list

Hi All, Total n00b here. I have been building for the first time using spry and this is what i'm trying to do.
Have a thumbnail with description, plus some body text and then the flv video that goes with the story.
I have had success with the html data list but I would like to be able to do this with xml so I can update the xml on the fly.
Can anyone tell me if you can call flv's with an xml spry list and if you can any help on how would be just fantastic

Not sure if this is what you are trying to do, but I would suggest having an XML file with the name the FLV and then you read the XMLDataset and display it in an html data region.
Then a javascript onClick method should forward the name of the file to your FLV player. Something like this <a href="" onClick="loadVideo('{filename}')" /> Video 1</a>
So your HTML should have:
<html>
<script>Spry stuff</script>
<script>FLV player embed</script>
<body>
    <div> Video Player</div>
     <div>
     Video 1
     Video 2
     </div>
</body>
</html>
And your XML should be:
<playlist>

          <filename>path to FLV video</filename>
