It's like my computer is possessed

Today has been a day of whirling beachballs!!!
I've done two things in the last two days that might have some bearing on my current problems. First, I added four Maxtor OneTouch 4Plus External Hard drives. Some program on the Maxtor keeps trying to sync the drives. I've thrown away every Maxtor ap I can find and it still pops up on restart and I've had to restart a ton of times today!!
The other thing I did is run software update yesterday. I think it included QuickTime 7.4.1, Safari 3.1 and a security update.
Anyway, now my OS is possessed. The problems I've had today are almost too numerous to mention! Early yesterday I tried downloading the MacBook Air tour video. 184Mb. It downloaded fine but got about 90% of the way through unzipping the file and locked up. Then Safari, the Finder and iTunes followed. Nothing would force quit either. I finally just held down the power button. A little later, while trying to work on my website Safari quit again and again it seems like half my other programs followed. After being forced to do the power button hard shutdown again I restarted. After working again for a short while the Spotlight and Find functions both quit. I couldn't search anything. Photoshop started taking seven or eight minutes to save a file!! After restarting again, all the apps, folders and stationary pads I keep in my finder window all disappeared. Later Final Cut Pro locked up (actually FCP's locked up four or five times now). I tried to force quit and the force quit didn't work. It wouldn't even come up on the screen. I'm having every restart contested by the mirror agent. I can't get my .Mac account to stop syncing and, with all the crashes I've had, there's not much for it to sync! Still, it's running constantly and won't respond to a "Cancel Sync" command.
It's like every program on my computer has gone nuts! I tried repairing permissions and the Disk Utility froze up. I've ditched my preferences on some of the programs but nothing seems to help. Everything I touch turns to mud!
Any ideas what I can try?
TIA,
Peter

petemay, when I just now saw the subject line for your post, I thought you must be suffering from the same problem as me, because I too feel like my computer is possessed! And sure enough, I learn that you also just ran Software Update and installed the most recent Security Update along with other files.
See this thread of mine:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1459413&tstart=0
I too have a Seagate drive (with 4 partitions/volumes) in an external firewire enclosure, but I don't think that's part of the problem in my case (I often have it shut off, and the problem persists whether it's on or off). I am now convinced (after reading various Security Update-related posts here) that the source of the problem is the 2008-002 Security Update.
I have been getting endlessly spinning ballz whenever I attempt to save or download a file (even a tiny jpg or text-only web page). Force Quit eventually works after quarter-hours and half-hours --kinda-- but it's barely worth the pain of waiting for it to do so. The Force Quit dialog box regularly shows 3, 4, or 5 apps (usually including the Finder) "not responding."
What will it take to get Apple to fix whatever's been messed up by that **** Security Update? So far, none of these hangs has brought up the crash report dialog box, and anyway I understand that those crash reports are not read. How do we bring this to their attention?

  • I am having a problem entering redemption code.  I can enter numbers but when I try to enter any letters it's like the computer is locked up, but it's not on any other application

I am having a problem entering my redemption code.  I can enter numbers but not any letters.  It's like the computer is locked up when I try.  My letters work on any other application

It sounds like you are trying to use a redemption code (alpha-numeric) where you are supposed to be using a serial number (strictly numeric).  A redemption is normally used to acquire a serial number... the serial number is what you enter to activate the software.

Use iTunes on your computer to organize your music and then sync to your phone from it.

  • How to retrieve items from Windows Explorer like My Computer?

How can a java program retrieve item names in the Windows Explorer directory structure [i.e. items in the left pane like Desktop, My Computer, Printer, Control Panel, Dial-up Networking etc.]. I retrieved all the drive names and directories using java.io.File class and displayed using JTree.

I don't believe that a lot of those items are actually "files" and directories, if you use the "dir" command in a DOS box from your Desktop I don't think you can find them...if you can then they are files etc...
Since stuff like "Control Panel" is OS specific (i.e. Windoz) then Java wouldn't support it in the core API...

  • IPod nano and like-new computer.

My computer was giving problems so i got everything erased so it's like new. if i install itunes and format my ipod(since it'll be new to my computer) would everything be erased and woulds i be able to get it back?

    See:
Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device: Apple Support Communities
Basically you will have to transfer its contents to the new computer and then restore the iPod and then resync. An iPod can only sync to one iTunes library.
BTW you posted in the iPod touch forum.

  • My computer is possessed: random key presses

I have a weird problem, with a lot of history.
The basics are: for several weeks now, my computer has been possessed with random key presses. Often when I am typing, a random letter will pop up, or my mouse will click at random times. For example, when I am playing an online game, a grenade will randomly get thrown, or my right mouse button will trigger, even though I didn't press it. But it is not limited to the game, it is in all applications.
My basic question: is there a program that can record or show not only key presses, but where the press came from? I don't know if it is a hardware or software problem.
Hardware I have: Apple Keyboard, Belkin n52, and a Logietch MX Revolution (just received yesterday, so the problem is older then the mouse).
For software, I am running ControllerMate, so it might be the culprit (I have a few simple layouts, so it is not some random node that is running).
To top it all off: about a month ago, I was banging (fake typing) on my keyboard, and my "a" key quit working... for two days. Then it started again. Maybe these random key presses are from a bad keyboard... but would it be able to generate mouse clicks?
ADDED: Yesterday I ran Disk Utility from my install disk and both repaired permissions and repaired disk (there were some problems with the disk), but the problem still exists.
    I am so confused...

    For example:
I have a button on my n52 that changes settings for me, and when this button is pushed, one of the LEDs lights up, and I get a Growl notification.
In the last 20 minutes, this button has been "pushed" three times, even though I have not touched my n52.
I have no idea why this is happening, and it is starting to annoy me.

  • I think my computer is possessed

Ok, not really, but I have a strange problem. My computer seems to run perfectly normally, except when I need to turn it off and turn it back on. If I turn my computer off, it won't turn back on. I can push the power button a hundred times and nothing happens. I've tried unplugging and plugging back in, nothing.
The only way I've been able to get it to turn on again, is to physically unplug everything, pick the computer up, carry it to another outlet, plug in, and it turns on as usual. I then have to turn it off, pick it up, and carry it back to my normal computer desk. Once it's back at my computer desk, I plug in to the same power strip it was originally plugged into, and it turns on as it properly should. This has happened every time my computer has had to be turned off for the past 2 or 3 months. It makes absolutely NO sense to me. If anyone has any input as to why this could be happening or any possible soltutions, I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

I had a similar issue with my iMac G5. It would not boot up when pressing the power button so I had to leave it on all the time (which I do now anyway). Here is a description of what they did from the Apple work order:
Proposed Solution: Replace power supply under repair extension program
    Replaced Item # 661-3351 Power Supply, Non-PFC
    Hardware Repair Level 1
The techs at the Apple store replaced my power supply on the spot last January at n/c because there has been an issue re: the power supply on some iMacs that Apple knows about. If I were you I would take it in and get it serviced.

  • My Computer is Possessed!

Ok. I just moved from the U.S. to the U.K. and my Powerbook is acting very weird. First of all, the battery performance has gone down about 30%, even though I made sure to use the Better Battery Life feature. It will suddenly tell me that I am running out of battery when I am at 15%, which it never did. Oh, it gets better. Then, all of a sudden the computer completely turns off....even though I still have battery life left (according to the indicator on the top of my screen). Then, when I turn the computer back on, it says "your clock is set to March 1970 and this may cause erratic system problems". So I go back and change the date and time, but it just happens all over again. ***? This happens at least three times a day--unless I have the battery plugged into the computer all day. Any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Hi, Stella, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your battery needs to be replaced — it's all done. A very tired old battery usually fails to report its charge level accurately and can't be calibrated to improve its accuracy, and it often drops from an indicated charge level anywhere between 75% and 10% to no charge at all in seconds. Yours doesn't retain even enough power at the end of a discharge cycle to maintain your computer's date and time settings until you get the AC adapter plugged in. This is not something British afflicting your Powerbook; it's just time for a new battery.

  • I'm using Pale Moon x64. The icon on the task bar and start menu looks like a 'computer' and not the pale moon icon-why is that?

My computer is Windows 7-64 bit.
I recently installed the Pale Moon x64 from the proper site.
All is working properly, except that the 'icon' for PM in the task bar and start menu is not the blue moon. I wonder why that is and how I can change it.
This happened on install of PM.

Thanks, but I can't find any answer to my question there.
I can't even figure out how to post a question.
When I put a few words in the comment section/bar, the result was nil.
Everything is working, I just want the icon to be correct.
I guess the motto of 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it' may have to satisfy me.
Maybe it will change when there is an update.

  • I feel like my computer's running OS9

    Hi,
    I know a 2001 computer's pretty outdated, but I do have OS 10.4.
Here's the problem. It can't multitask. For example, sometimes I have to even shut down iTunes to use the internet. I know I have only about 17 GB of hard drive space left, and I question my internet provider, but I just wanted to throw that out.
    Even Word slows down applications.
    I'd welcome your comments. Thanks.

  • Syncing causing problems with my computer.

when syncing cc, my track pad/mouse go crazy like my computer is possessed... any one else having problems

Sorry  - I already reported it to adobe, they told me to uninstiall cc and reinstall - it still doesn't help.
I have Mac osx 10.9.5, on both mac and macbook pro, track ball, logitech, but it's not the mouse, I've replaced the battery, turned it off, it still happens with the track pad.  I will be online with facebook etc, and in the back ground new folders are opening on my desktop.  It will go to launch pad and back. If I'm reading an article on google and the cursor is hovering over a work - it will highlight and look it up in a dictionary for me.  It will act as if I'm always right clicking when you hover over something,  adobe apps that I've very seldom used will open, such as photoshop lightroom, Muse etc.  on the bottom menu bar when you try to right-click to force quit, it won't work.  It's like my computer is possessed.  when I quit creative cloud desktop - it stops.

  • Possessed iMac 27: Brightness control turns itself down while I'm using computer, fights me when I try to turn it back up

This computer is possessed! It literally seems like a ghost is pressing the brightness key on the keyboard while I'm working. It happens sporadically and seemingly without reason. The brightness icon pops up on the screen as the screen quickly dims. When I try to turn the brightness back up, it is like playing tug of war with the ghost. I turn it up, it instantly goes back down. After 20 seconds or so of this foolishness, it stops and I can resume working. Until it happens again. AARRGGHH!!!
    Thoughts?

Try doing both a SMC and PRAM reset, do each at least 2x. Then retest and repost, if you don't know how to do these you will find info in:
