It's on its way! Linux to MacOSX

So after years of being a Linux user - I've used Linux as my desktop since 2000 - I'm tired. The final straw was when I delved into amatuer photography with a DSLR. The Gimp is fine, f-spot photo management is ok, but I'm tired of hoping the next version of these programs will be "good enough".
Desktop Linux is actually very mature. Ubuntu (and others) work great as a desktop OS. However, commerical application support is non-existent. No Photoshop, no iPhoto, no Picasa (XP).
So I made the plunge. Last week I ordered a Macbook with 1gb ram and 80gb hard drive. Fed Ex says it will be here tomorrow by noon! I'm very excited.
I just hope I don't suffer from some of the issue's mentioned here (heat, camera problems, etc). Although coming from linux I know that people post to support forums when they have problems, not when things are working perfectly so I'm taking it in stride. I also know (coming from linux and being a professional working with Windows) that no OS is perfect. But I am going to hold Apple to it's word of it "just works" advertising.
Maybe my next post will be from a Macbook!

Congrats on your new MacBook! I got mine yesterday along with a surprise. After I turned it on and set it up, I was on the Internet right away. Strange thing though, I didn't have my cable modem plugged in or don't have a wireless network set up yet. It found my neighbor's open wireless network! lol
Mine's been running fine. It gets a little warm, but I never heard the fans run yet. If they did, they're awful silent! Maybe I'm just used to the 9 fans running in my Power Mac G5.

  • My iPhone 4 was lost ages ago, it has found its way back to me but it has a pin code and been registered to a different Apple ID how can I undo this

So I lost my iPhone 4 about 2/3yrs ago ,I got a replacement  4s though insurance at the time. Somehow my old iPhone 4 has made its way back to me a week ago how ever it has a lock code which I don't have any idea what it would be and it's also been registered to another Apple ID so it won't allow me to register it even though I am the rightfull owner. Can anyone help me get this fixed please?? My partner 'a mobile  broke a week ago and can't afford another one atm so this will be very helpful if I can get it sorted thanks

Two issues. As Rudegar says, there is nothing you can do to use the phone without the cooperation of whoever owns the Apple ID the phone is locked to.
The other issue is that since you got a replacement from your insurance company the found phone legally belongs to the insurance company.

Boot Camp will only let you install onto an internal disk. This is largely because of Windows restrictions, not Mac OS restrictions. The beta thread has some supposed approaches to let you do this, using manual steps instead of using Boot Camp Assistant.

  • Is Aperture on its way out or should i buy it ?

I read somewhere that aperture is on its way out and there will be no more development ? Is that true ?

Aperture will still be supported and updated to work with the next MacOS X version Yosemite, but yes, Apple will not release a new Aperture version. Both, Aperture and iPhoto will be replaced by a new application "Photos", to be released next year. Apple will support the migration of Aperture libraries and iPhoto libraries to "Photos".

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing.

  • How Bing found its way to Fascinate and what to expect in the future

Per The Wall Street Journal article, Microsoft Struggles to Gain in Mobile Search market. The full article is at http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704621204575488063070212340.html?mod=ITP_marketplace_3#ixzz0zUqW68Mt
One third of its way into a five-year deal to make its Internet search and advertising services the default option on Verizon Wireless cellphones, Microsoft is still struggling to make headway in a market that continues to be dominated by Google. The arrangement with Verizon was aimed at vaulting Microsoft into a competitive position on the mobile Internet. But the deal gave Verizon the right to use Google’s search engine on phones powered by Google’s Android software. So far, on seven of its eight Android phones, Verizon has opted to use Google search under deals where it gets a cut of the ad revenue. But Microsoft is pushing to get more out of its Verizon agreement.
Microsoft says seven new Android phones scheduled to come out on Verizon this fall will feature its search engine, Bing.
The first of those devices, Samsung’s Fascinate, hit stores last week and uses Microsoft software for its default search engine and mapping service.
Microsoft said the Verizon deal has helped the volume of mobile searches on Bing more than triple over the past year.
    So here you have it...Bing will still be a default search of Fascinate even after 2.2 update (as many already knew that) and unfortunately more of the same crap will come from VZW in the future. It's all about money for VZW and MS and nobody give a {word filter avoidance}
about what consumer needs and/or wants. The best way to stop VZW and MS allience, is to stop purchasing those phones that carry MS software just like all of as did with Kin (those phones didn't survive even 6 months with VZW).

What I can't understand why people are defending poor judgment on the provider part and trying to find work around.
Being related to software industry for 20 years and seeing different client large and small, I know precisely that no customer would sign off on the work around if a workable solution to a problem isn't underway.
What people are offering by installing shortcut to Google on the desktop is quick and dirty way of allowing provider continue to do what they did until now.
Last time I checked, it was the United Stated of America with all the freedom that is the most famous for. How come people have freedom to do most of the things but we can't uninstall simple application from the phone.
If you have a chance, check in person or view online review of any smartphone from Europe, Asia, or Australia...you will not find that madness that US consumers have to deal with. I understand that provider subsidizes prices for phones of 1 or 2 year agreement but then they are insuring themselves with $350 ETF. And what if I am deciding to purchase the phone without contract, I am still unable to uninstall all that crap that VZW had enforced on me.
Those applications that VZW and MS forced on consumer in the Fascinate are bloatware that do nothing but consume memory, wasting battery life, and like a ghost waiting to be activated to start making money.
Removal of those applications do not present any security treats to either cellphone company or our country for that matter. Those application are rather simple money-making tricks that VZW did to present their shareholders and partners with a fatter return on their investments. I wouldn't care for someone getting richer (it is America after all) if that would be done in the clear and honest way and not the way it was.

  • Is firewire on its way out?

I love my 3G 20Gb iPod and I use it as a firewire disk for backups in addition to musical duties. I also love the iPod nano for its color screen, but the storage capacity is just too small and I prefer firewire over USB. Is firewire on its way out for all future iPods? Are double digit capacities on their way out too?

Is firewire on its way out for all future iPods?
I am not sure. I certainly hope not. I also prefer to use Firewire over USB, but I can understand why Apple decides that the iPod Nano uses USB only.
Are double digit capacities on their way out too?
    No, I don't think so.

  • Tried to load photos to ipod but its ways the required file cannot be found

I tried to load my photos on to my ipod but its ways "the required file cannot be found" so what do i have to do to get the file? i have the ipod video. so can any one hepl me plz!

I had the same error message after I had restored my Pictures/iPhoto folder from a backup. After restoring my iMac's Pictures folder, I kept getting that message. Everything else would sync just fine, even the movies.
I figured that it was the iPod photo cache folder. It's located in the Users>Pictures>iPhoto Library>iPod Photo Cache. I deleted that folder, it sync'd up all the pics.
This simple deletion was my answer. I've searched through these boards so many weeks for the answer. I've done those Five R's to no avail so many times. I even thought my ipod being Windows Fat32 based was an issue. I hope this works for you as well. Caveat: always make backups before you delete anything.

  • Internal Bluetooth Module on its way out?

Recently, when I have booted up my Mac, the Bluetooth module hasn't started, so my mouse and keyboard don't work. Luckily, I have a spare USB mouse! If I restart, it still doesn't start up. If I shutdown and then startup, it generally does start up the Bluetooth module, and I can continue.
I've not installed any new software over the last month except Apple's security updates, Safari, etc., and no firmware updates (and no exceptions).
Therefore, I am wondering, is the module on its way out?
A pain if it is, but as I still have my old USB keyboard, it's not going to make me buy a new iMac just yet
    Thanks,
    Blackie

    HI Blackie,
    Try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
Make sure you system software is up to date. Click the Apple Menu  then click Software Updates...
If you have available updates, make sure and run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions before and after any updates.
If the internal Bluetooth is truly exhausted you can get a D-Link Bluetooth USB adapter. http://www.dlink.com/products/default.aspx?pid=34
    or here: http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DBT-120-Wireless-Bluetooth-Adapter/dp/B00006B7DB/re f=sr12?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1245185955&sr=8-2
I have one for an older Mac laptop and it's lasted 3 years.
Always make sure you have sufficient disk space also.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see
Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

  • The hard drive in my iMac is on its way out. I have an EHD (2TB), can i use this as my main (only) drive?

The hard drive in my iMac is on its way out. I have an EHD (2TB), can i use this as my main (only) drive? ie unmount the 'C' drive and use the external hard drive as 'Macintosh HD'?

If the EHD was, originally, formatted as an Mac OS extended (journaled) format with GUID partition scheme, then you can designate this drive as the startup drive in OS X preferences panel.

  • What is the safest way to install MacOSX 10.7 into VirtualBox running under MacOSX 10.7?

I find that porting scientific code to MacBookPro with MacOSX 10.7.2 has proven very difficult.  I have VirtualBox 4.1.8 running very well on it and would like to install MacOSX 10.7.2 onto VirtualBox so I can test many workarounds w/o hosing up the MacBook.  Any advice on the best way to go about this?

Thanks for the link, but again, it requires you to buy MacOSX 10.7 Lion all over again; I just bought it and I'm trying to run it on the same machine,  so buying it a 2nd time seems unreasonable.   The Apple documentation I've found (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718) about restoring Lion  does not seem to offer any method to put it onto any media I can use for the VirtualBox, and I don't want wipe the current installation over & over as I try to get all the shared libraries to work.

  • Oracle considering creating its own Linux Distro?

According to this article they are:
    http://news.com.com/Oracle+says+may+launch+own+Linux+version/2100-7344_3-6061696.html
If they do decide to create an Oracle Linux, what Distro would you like to see them base it on?
RH? [ a quick scan shows the issues RH has with Oracle's software right now ]
    Debian?
    Suse?
    Slack?
    Gentoo?
Actually, I would recommend they work with a from scratch distro and build it themselves completely, since RH is as far from being standards compliant as possible, Suse isn't a lot better.
Debian is closest to being standards compliant, but since the standard states RPM is the package manager and Debian won't downgrade from their own .deb system they aren't fully compliant.
Red Hat has the major Market share, but buying a bugware distro and fixing it would cost more than rolling their own from scratch would.
I would love to see a Company that could give Microsoft a run for their money backing a Linux Distribution, but I would hate to see that company saddle themselves with bugware to start with. I say that rolling their own is the best way for Oracle to go

One thing that could be done quite simply is to produce an appliance style distro.
Most distros try to be all things to all people (Server, Desktop, Laptop, Appliance). Oracle only need a secure distro that can run their products and a browser. No need for 1 million and 1 additon tools and packages. No openoffice or mail client. Just a solid server distro to run Oracle database and app servers.
I can see the appeal of that, and it's less of a threat to the other Linux vendors.
    Cheers
    Tim...

  • Universal Binary Shockwave for Mac? Is Director on its way out?

Anyone have any thoughts about if and when there will be a
universal binary version of shockwave for the Mac?
Also, Director seems to receive very little attention from
Adobe. Anyone know anything or care to speculate about Adobe's
commitment to maintaining Director. I'm guessing that adobe will
eventually ad 3D capabilities to Flash and do away with Director.
My company use to do a lot with Director, now we have a scant few
clients who bring us work that requires it.
As the Art Director for my company I have had a somewhat
passive role with Director, creating art and presentations that
only require basic navigation and animation and handing off to a
true programmer when more complex functionality is needed. Our
programmer has left and it seems on some level I am now assuming
the role of main director person, at least unofficially. I also
have a beginner to intermediate level of proficiency with Flash.
I'm pretty much left to teach myself what ever programming our
clients need as it is needed. My plate is full and I'm trying to
determine if I need to invest time in really learning lingo beyond
my rudimentary working knowledge, or just concentrate on expanding
my Flash knowledge base. If Flash did 3D, I would probably forget
about Director because it seems like it is on it's way out and most
of the things our clients need I think can be done in Flash
although for standalone presentations, I prefer the seamless flow
of Director to the "wait to load" result of Flash.
    Any thoughts on this?

    As Adobe says itself:
A new version of Director will be released in the first half
    of 2007. It
will be sold under the name Adobe Director. No features list
    available yet.
That's the only information we have and you'll have to live
    with it until
the release (or beta program just before).
Adobe doesn't have anything else in its product range that
    comes close to
Director and Shockwave. Shockwave 3D is still to this day the
    most reliable
Web 3D plugin available (even if it has not the best
    rendering quality but
sufficient for games, e-learning and 3D product assembly
    instructions).
Adding 3D to Flash Player would mean a heavier download
    (Flash Player 9 is
already 1 MB without the Yahoo toolbar).
The other news it that Tom Higgins, the Director Technical
    Product Manager
left. I believe his position has already been filled
    internally by someone
else at Adobe (it's a huge company) or will be soon (haven't
    seen any job
    offer yet for this role).
    Best regards,
    Karl Sigiscar.

  • Buy Lightroom 5 - when Lightroom 6 is on its way?

    Hey everyone,
I REALLY want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I've read that Lightroom 6 is due to come out in March. I'd rather get the 6, but don't want to have to arbitrarily wait two months just so that I don't have to pay for two upgrades. Does anyone know if there's a way to buy 6 in advance, and use the 5 until it comes out or like, is there a time window between when you purchase and a newer version comes out that the upgrade will be automatically included in your earlier purchase? Just wondering if there's a way they motivate people (like yours truly) to buy their version when a newer one is expected.
I really need to upgrade (long story), so I'm hoping there's some way to do this! Thanks for any wisdom y'all can provide.
    Hawley

Well, looks like March 9th, 2015 is the expected release date - The box image, new features and specs have already been leaked out.
There are two things you can do if you want to use LR5 now: (1) Use the 30-day free trial or (2) buy LR5 from Adobe directly or an authorized reseller and take advantage of their 30 day return policy once version 6 is released.
On most product releases they also have a free upgrade policy to the newer version if you buy  the outgoing version right before it's released (here's more info). It's actually a great time to buy Lightroom 5 as most resellers have good deals on LR5 now so you can buy LR5 at the sale price and get LR6 for free... The only risk is if the release date is pushed out by Adobe and you fall outside of the free upgrade window.
