It's RAM time!

So the mac has been running a little slow lately, especially when making videos in iMovie. I've been thinking about upgrading the RAM since it's a little old school. Two questions:
1) I have the 512 MB card in the lower slot. Is it adequate to just add a second card in the upper slot, or should I replace that old stick?
2) Seems like there are a lot of compatibility issues with doing this. What are the make and model that I need to purchase to have the best luck of things running smoothly?
Thanks!
PowerBook G4 1.5 , 512 MB   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Welcome to the Apple discussions
If you want to go to 1.5GB, you can add a 1GB stick to the upper slot. If you want to go to 2GB, then replace the bottom one with a 1GB, plus 1GB in the upper slot.
Our PBs are sensitive souls when it comes to memory. Crucial, Kingston (not their value ram line), and Samsung are all brands that work well. You can scan the discussions for other brands that have worked for people, too.
If you go to the Crucial web site, use the memory advisor tool to find which memory of theirs to use. They do warranty it for life and usage in your system if chosen with their tool. Kingston has a similar selector. Samsung you can get from a number of sources. I've used OWC at http://www.macsales.com .

  • Opinions - time for a new computer?  need more RAM, Time Machine back up full - get new computer?

I am in a quandary.  My early 2008 iMac needs more Ram.  I could upgrade from 2gb to 4gb for around $60.  My 1T external hard drive for Time Machine is full and I do not relish the idea of it erasing old data if I continue to use it this way, but then I am shelling out more money for a new hard drive.  Can get new 3T hd for about $200.  Is it worth it to shore up my computer?  I have recently upgraded OS to ML and it is really starting to act sluggish.  I hate the idea of having to transfer everything over to a new Mac and therefore new OS.   I need a working computer every day for business for my husband, so it would be impossible to go without a computer while things are being transferred over - and how long would it take for me to do that.  Plus, will files and photos be transferred over exactly as I have organized them?  I have spent a lot of time organizing bookmark folders in Safari, mailboxes in Mail and albums and folders in iPhoto.  Don't want to start from scratch again.   Also don't like the idea that the new iMacs don't have a slot for dvds and cds, playing and burning.  I do a lot of this kind of thing.  So then I would need to buy a separate thing for doing this as well as the computer itself.  Have wondered how many things have changed from ML to Maverick.  Another big learning curve???
Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions.  I am a senior citizen and don't know how to sort through this.  One thing I think about is that I don't know how much longer I will be living and able to do computer work. I know everything is a risk, but would like some advice even if it is only an opinion.

It's probably time for a new machine. You won't have to start from scratch. Migration Assistant will bring over all of your data and apps (some may need to be re-activated using product keys). Depending on how much you actually have, a few hours should be all it takes over Ethernet.
Time Machine should continually erase the oldest backups when it needs space for new ones.
You might want to do both. Upgrade the RAM in the old machine to the max it will take, and buy a new machine as well. If your husband really needs a machine available all the time for business, having a 'spare' is a good thing.
Check out what's available in the refurb store. They are virtually indistinguishable from new retail stock and come with a full warranty. You can save hundreds.

    Hi,
I am having issues setting my memory timmings.
For some reason the CAS timing is locked at CAS 3 even when CAS 4 has been manually selected in the BIOS.
Has this issue been addresses in the new BIOS v1.8?

but going into BIOS & system info I see that the BIOS is American Megatrends v1.2.
Okay, in that case make sure your system is stable and flash your BIOS to the latest official Version.  That should take care of your issue.

  • Ram Issues with a Hp Pavilion a6357c or maybe the amd athlon 64 5000+

I am really not sure if I am in the area-of a post like this. Please excuse my grammar and spelling"will try and use spell check"...
I got this computer from a friend of mine.Total nightmare. Was told all it needs is a hard drive and maybe a video card..Boy was that not the issue. I first got it and plugged it-make sure it would boot to bios..Nothing computer turned on-fans and all..Nothing on the screen. To make a long story short...I found an old ps2 mouse..The mouse was defective...with that mouse plugged in-computer wouldn't even boot to bios..Fixed that issue. Got into bios and all was good. Next step..Video card-Bought a new pny 9500 GT and a TTGI 550 power supply....swaped it all out and it works great...Than found a hard drive SATA 2...everthing installed and ready to place an operating system on....
Windows 7 64 bit--Installed great...But when it came up to the start up---Freeze--blue screen...Ok thought maybe it was the ram.....ended up taking all the old ram out and replace it with some DDR2 6300--or what ever the max was...total of 6 gb...still issue...freezing--decided to boot into safe mode---all good and ran great....checked Ram-stress test-checked every little hardware--stress test-no issues...Booted back up out of safe mode... Same issues....ok--lets just try Windows 7 32 bit.....
Windows 7 32 bit.....Install went great-no issues....updated and all the sp's...but underload----bluescreen....played and played with it...but the blue screen were all over the place...back into safe mode and checked all the drivers--and devices....Ok lets just go back to what the system had----windows Vista....
Again----everything boot and installed perfect...This time was a liitle more stable...updates--all the sp's all the drivers.....
Blue screen underload......Ok maybe my ram is at fault.......
It ended up stable and working perfect---single channel mode-2 gb in the first slot....I tried every way to put the ram in.....
found out--ok---only stable in single channel mode...anytime I added ram--for dual channel...Fail under load....Put the 2 gb stick or a 1 gb stick any any of the other slots-by itself---perfect stable and running great...I was even able to add another 1 gb stick with the 2 gb stick---but it had to be in single channel....tried to add more in single channel and fail....3 is it and it is not all the way stable--but stable enough to run...2 gb stick by itself---perfect.........
Did some digging---maybe it is the memory controller...But can not find any post with this issue---I keep finding people asking the quesion--and there storys match...But no answers and it seems that the just get a walk around.....
I have narrowed it down..It has to me the intergrated memory controller on the chip....so i think...I could just purchase a new one and swap it out........But here is the issue...........
Safe Mode will take all the ram-dual channel---single channel..anyway.......But so will linix-----Only has this issue with Windows....
The other werid item too---My had drive say scis drive or something along that lines--Not sata.....and again-I can not find a post to explain why......
Please understand----Stress test on Ram-cpu-motherboard--videocard----everthing--is perfect no issues...PSU is perfect---checked it out in another sytem---no issues....I am at my witts end with this thing and I have got nowhere......
It is working great with just a 2 gb stick of ram---very fast and very responsive....But adding extra ram really bothers me...Not because--it make a differance-Just because I don't know...
Can somebody out there school me.....I have tried everything........

Sorry all-But i never got a reply to this situation. But I am done. I ended up running threw tons of post and tons of threads. I can tell you that when people ask a question. There is always some smart A--, telling them something that has nothing to do with the current situation. I guess alot of people out there think they know everything- and have nothing to do-but mess with the people like me when they are stumped. Anyways...I ended up running a computer check in or after bios...I think they call it burned in-HP....what ever-the last straw when you can not figure it out..Ran it with one stick---than with all the sticks..Everytime--it claimed that there was nothing wrong..But when I tried to restart it--boom blue screen..with the mulyi sticks of ram. So when I couldn't find an solution online...I stoped using the words HP a6357c.. and just typed the issue..Funny thing the issue kept poping up--and with the same motherboard or processor...and again-nobody ever came up with a solution..Most of the post claimed the issue was the power supply....ot the ram timming..But I know better..Not to mention people kept saying-buy the tool from ebay to check wattage usuage.....Bam----wattage...Did a simple check with harware monitor...my 3.5 or 3.3 rail was running at 1.78....enought to power one stick of ram---not 2...or barley enough to power a 1 gb stick and a 2 gb stick in single channel mode...Again-people were blaming--PSU"not my case".Ram Timming.."not my case".........Then I found a person with the same make and model.....Look for fat or bad capasitors...Never thought of that.....Guess what------That is what I found....No body but a thread-one thread has explained...If you have this same issue-Look at the capasitors...Maybe this is a defective motherboard--you can not find it on the site anyway-no specs nada..like it was a mistake..So if you have one just like this- I have a feeling-you will run into this issue-in one way or another..I just don't understand why both companys have no fix--or no--recall info..No answers to problems on these....now I have a big black paper weight.....sorry for my spelling and grammer-just so mad..the net was no help on this

  • How do you properly set the RAM timings?

In an effort to solve random crashes on my pc I adjusted the RAM timings. I managed to stop the crashes, but I really didn't know what I was doing.
Recently I was playing with the cpu overclock options and I started crashing again, even after I was back to normal cpu settings. I managed to get it running stable again by adjusting the RAM timings, but again it was by trial and error.
I have read a lot of forums where people who have upgraded to a GF4 on several different systems have been plagued with crashes similar to mine. Is it possible that something is out of sync between the video, cpu, and ram? Is there anything that can be adjusted on the video card? Just a thought.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Time Machine restore of 119GB is stuck

    Hi,
I'm trying to restore a backup of a total of 119GB that includes my IPhoto and Itunes Library that were saved on an external HD that now seems to have stopped working.
This external HD was included in the backup perimeter of my Time Capsule and I can see the backup is there.
When I start the restore procedure the process starts, it asks me about some authorization (I type my admin password) and the restore starts.
At around 10GB of restored information it gets "stuck" (meaning that I do not see any additional progress).
    System info:
    OSX Version: 10.6.8
Type of Mac: MacBook - late 2007 - 4GB Ram
Time Capsule 2T is connected wirelessly to the Mac
Can someone please help me? I have tried it several times always with the same result.
I also tried to restore only the iphoto library but I have the same problem.
    Thanks
    Marco

  • 32 GB ram for final cut pro (and Afetr Effects)? Is it worth?

    Hello,
and now it's the RAM time...
I have to decide how much ram to buy, I work with Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop and, I hope, soon with Cinema 4D; this is the probabily Mac Pro configuration:
    - Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    - Mac Pro RAID card
    - 4 SAS internal hard disks 300GB 15,000-rpm
I'd like to expand it to 32 GB of ram, has it a sense or is it too much? Can 32GB RAM paradoxicalally slow it down? I heard too much RAM could be a problem...
    Thanks a lot,
    Stefano Bianchi

    Silal wrote:
    Hi
FCP will not take advantage of more that 4 GB: Maximum memory usage in Final Cut Pro is 2.5 GB. Other FCS apps like Motion and Color will thanks you more RAM, but IMHO 32 GB is really too much, what means I cannot state you'll notice the difference.
More RAM will help ypu on working with all your apps open at the same time making the system more responsive, but as I told you I think you can do it with less that 32 GB.
    Hope that helps !

But Leopard on an Intel is 64 bit, right? So the article would not apply or has FCP not been updated for a 64 bit memory space?

  • Time Capsule and media files

Hi all. I apologize if this is a redundant question, but I haven't quite found the answer that I need.
I want to purchase a Time Capsule to use as a wireless n router and Time Machine backups for my desktop, notebook, and daughters iMac. I also want to attach an external drive via USB to the Time Capsule to serve as a media server (basically my iTunes and iPhoto libraries), to serve the above-mentioned computers as well as my AppleTV.
    1. Is this possible? If so, can anyone point me to a list of instructions describing the setup and settings?
    2. Will this be fast enough to serve the media to my clients (USB and wireless n)?
    3. Will Time Capsule back up my media on the external drive using Time Machine automatically?
    4. Is there a better solution?
    Thanks in advance.
    John

JG, I have a similar question, but I'm not following your response to John Dougherty. Here's what I have:
    - Mac Mini 2.0Ghz, 2GB RAM
    - Time Capsule (500GB)
    - two MacBooks
    - two external hard drives (320GB and 500GB), both firewire 400
    - one SimpleShare NAS drive, but I've read these will not work with OSX 10.4 and above (the drive is from a few years ago; I have 10.5.x on all my machines now)
And here's what I want to do:
    1. I want to have all my media (specifically, photo and music) files in one location so that I can access them wirelessly from my Macbooks. My wife and I both have large music libraries -- each too large to fit on any one computer. So I would like to have our music on one wirelessly-accessed drive, so that, say, I can play tunes or update my iPhone on my laptop without being tethered to an external drive (which is how it is now). I don't care about wirelessly streaming video.
    2. I want to be able to use Time Machine for automatic backups, obviously. I don't care where these reside.
    3. I had originally planned to use the Mini as a media server -- i.e., I wanted hook it to my television (via HDMI adapter) to play streamed videos as well as video saved to my hard drive(s). The mini's internal hard drive is 120GB, probably enough for all these media files, but I imagine I'll max that out soon. (Most movies are 1GB or more, and I'm collecting a lot of movies.)
    My plan is this:
    - store all media files on external hard drive(s)
    - connect the mini to the TV via HDMI adapter
    - connect external hard drive to Mini via firewire
    - connect Mini to Time Capsule via ethernet
Time Capsule stores backups from both Macbooks and Mini (if it can fit all that).
    External drives store all media.
Mini is the brains of the operation.
Is this the same setup you're recommending to John Dougherty? Or am I trying to do something different? Or am I trying to do something stupid?
Is there any value in using a NAS drive in place of those external firewire drives?
Thanks in advance to Jolly Giant, or to anyone who can help me with this setup.

  • What's the most effective way to speed up AVCHD video editing?

    Hello Everyone,
I'm having the same problem, my wife and I have a small wedding videography company, I film jobs on weekends when I'm not working full time and my wife stays home with our 2 year old daughter and edits during the week.
When jobs come in we both are using our macbook pro's for the import process because it takes SOOO long to import all the avchd clips.  We're filming with the Panasonic HMC40 shooting in 720/30p on Class 10 16GB SDHC Cards.
I have an early 2008 macbook pro, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo 2GB of ram, and my wife has a 2010 unibody with a dual core i5 w/ 4GB of ram.
As a test, I imported an 8 minute and 47 second clip in my machine, and the import takes 20:39.  I went to my local apple store and ran the same import test on brand new machines and here are the results:
mbp Core 2 duo 2GB ram time: 20:39 (my machine)
mbp dual core i5 4GB ram time: 7:08 (my wife's machine)
mbp quad core i7 4GB ram time: 4:50
    mba core 2 duo 1.86Ghz 2GB ram SSD 64GB drive time: 12:17
imac quad core 2.7Ghz 4GB ram time: 4:54
    imac quad core 2.8Ghz 3GB ram 4:27
    mac pro 2.8Ghz 3GB ram 3:42
I watched the quad core i7 macbook pro's performance monitor, and at one point it had 63 iMovie threads running to import the footage.  The biggest bottleneck for importing avchd seems to be the processor.  With an import time of about have of the real time, that has the biggest appeal to me, but comes at a starting price of $1799 + tax, and is expensive.
What I'm looking for is the most cost effective way to cut down on import and export times for either new hardware or software.  I haven't tested the elgato h.264 HD encoder yet, nor have I tested the new Final Cut X.  Has anyone done this? What about Adobe Premier Elments or Premier Pro
Our compeditors are offering 'same day edit' services, and making basically a trailer of the events that happen at the ceremony, then editing them on site in a 3-4 hour time window between the ceremony and reception, then using a projector and screen to show that trailer at the beginning of the reception, usually added to the slide show.
That's the kind of thing that we want to be able to do for our customers, but also to cut down the massive amount of editing time it takes to get every finished product out the door.
What does everyone think?  Is the elgato h.264 HD encoder worth it?  Is there a more professional avchd / h.264 hardware / software solution that can speed up the import process faster?
I'd love to know everyone's thoughts.
    Thanks.

    One thing you might consider...
Go to Final Cut Pro X.
In FCP 10, you can import AVCHD and begin editing immediately. You can edit natively in AVCHD if your needs are very simple, but most people would use FCP to "optimize" the AVCHD to ProRes 422, which is an intermediate codec like Apple Intermediate Codec, but provides higher quality. The optimizing to ProRes 422 as well as analyzing for stabilization, sound, and color takes place in the background if you have cores available.
But you can edit immediately, and as the optimized clips become available, FCP will automatically use them instead of the AVCHD clips.

  • HT2341 Is there a way to disable POST on a mac-mini?

I'm getting a temporary (false) reading on RAM resulting in the one second single blinking light. If I hold the Power button to stop it, and then power up again, POST succeeds. It's almost as though POST didn't give the RAM time to fully energize. Is there a way to bypass this portion of the POST test; or disable POST entirely?

Personally if my memory were failing POST, especially intermitttently, I would never trust the server to do what it was supposed to do. I have replaced mamory in several iterations of Mac mini from the first to the latest. The only challenging part was getting the case off of the early versions. OWC has a complete set of upgrade videos and if I can do it, anyone should be able to. Just take it one step at a time. While you are on the OWC site, they are a reliable source of Apple compatible RAM.

  • Any Cell Menu Tutorials out there?

    Hey All -
All is well but I'm trying to learn about the Cell Menu. No problems, but I haven't stressed this rig yet (ran ATTO on my Crucial RealSSD 128G though - right on spec)
Beyond my most pressing question - why (I think) my timings are reported as 7-7-7-19 instead of 9-9-9-24 - I'm looking for a site, a white paper, a guru-for-hire - anything that I can use to learn about the Cell Menu.
There's a ton of info on overclocking of course, but nothing like a general "here's how to read the Cell Menu."
Any thoughts on where to learn in-depth about the Cell Menu?
    Thanks guys!

Hey HU - thanks for the reply. Yes it's interesting to me, I put the Uncore Freq to 10 and tested with Everest, and for some reason my RAM times all dropped back to what they were with CR set to 2T (even though I did set it back to 1T).
So I went back, changed Uncore Freq to Auto and now I'm back on top of every category.
Anyway, I guess it's like the articles say re: OC'ing and BIOS settings: "your mileage may vary."
My Uncore Freq runs at 2400MHz on Auto and 2600MHz on 10. I assumed the faster rate would perform better but Everest seems to like the Auto setting better.
Eventually I'll post in the OC'ing forum once I understand these relationships a bit more - Uncore Freq, Mem Ratio, etc.
btw, is Everest a "legit" benchmarking program? I read tech sites and most don't use it in their reviews very often. But it's the only one I've got right now, that and ATTO.
Thanks again for your help HU!
Shoot - I just noticed Task Mngr is only seeing 8G or RAM instead of 12G.
weird because the Everest tests were great - tops in almost every category, and Everest (and CPU-Z) report 12G installed. Everest shows 12G but on the Usage section it's only showing 8G.
I tried putting the Uncore Ratio back to 10 and still only 8G. Tried Auto again, only 8G.
I may just go back to the default 1066 clock - Everest gave me the best results with that.
Unless there are other ideas perhaps...? I'd like to be running the RAM to spec - I guess. Although maybe I should rethink that - I'm getting better test results with the "slower" clock and faster timings. (defaulted to 7-7-7-19 1T @533MHz).
I suppose all this has very little real-world impact anyway...(?)
    thanks you guys!

  • How do I.... Specifics

Alright.. I just got this new computer built for me and I am having big problems. I took it back in and he said all I needed to do was to update the drivers, so I got it back and updated the drivers and it still doesnt work. So I started looking around on the internet and came across an article stating that the motherboard I have is not supporting the the AMD Athlon 64 properly. It says after testing the problem a new BIOS is all that is needed.
The problems are the whole system will lock up.. the sound will stop, the mouse and keyboard will become unresponsive but the video is still there but frozen. The second thing that sometimes happens is the monitor will lose signal and everything will stop. Also sometimes a blue screen will appear with writing but goes away to quick.
So I was wondering if you guys know how to fix this.
    My sistem specs are
    Windows XP Pro (not 64..)
    MSI K8N NEO4 F
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+
    1 GIG of RAM
    Sapphire x700 Radeon 256 mb
I would really appreciate if you guys can help me because I am really eager to use this system!
    Thanks
P.S the article is here and I updated the BIOS.

May be the mistake was in the translation. Which is wired because MSI is globle and would you think that they would proof read, for errors before it was release it.
As for reading dual channel there are several was ways:

you can check on this from the memtest results u showed to us earlier, if u run the test now u'll get dual channel in the results....
Also on boot up (in BIOS) you disable the screen logo, thus allowing you to see the first boot screen. Showing CPU, drives & RAM speed, RAM timming & RAM mode - single -dual.
CPU-Z: will also display RAM mode on the memory tab, (look at channels bottem right of image. IMAGE HERE
Good luck with your problems all

  • New build neo2-f windows xp will not install

1st I am doing my 1st build. so I may be somewhat remedial.
    I am building a new system w/
    MSI K8n Neo-2F socket 939
    amd 64 athlon 3000+ Venice
    COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power RS-430-PMSR
    POWERCOLOR R41BG-ND3 Radeon X700 256MB GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X
LITE-ON Black IDE DVD Burner Model SOHW-1693S
    x2 pqi POWER Series 512MB DDR 400 PC 3200
ide 80 gb seagate (don't remember exact drive from old pc w/ no problems in prev system)
system will post, but when I try to install WinXP home get stalled in BSOD after drivers load. right when it is loading Windows
I have tried 4 different types of ram ( as i have been told that most of these issues are ram related) most recently kingston  kvr400x64c3ak2 512mb.  I have 2 but have only installed in socket 1 until i get some sort of stability. this ram is listed as tested to work on this motherboard and was cheap therefore the reason for purchase.
Ram times are set to auto.  I have been able to install Win 98  on the machine, but that is obviously not a legitimate operating system for this machine.  All input is wellcome thanx.

    Hafdef,
1- Which slots have you got your RAM sticks into?
2- What is their SPD settings and OEM recommended voltages?
3- Are you nanually setting them in the Cell menu?
4- Confirm that your old IDE HD has its jumpers set properly and confirm cable connections?
5- How i& where is your CD or DVD connected? (ideally your Hard drive should be master on Primary and your CD or DVD master on Secondary)
If this yield nothing try loading Windows with "2T" selected in BIOS Cell menu? If this does not work Keeep 2T and remove one stick of RAM to see if this will help.
Also what method are you using to load your Windows system? (Master CD SP XX then SP updated or a combined installed)
    Good luck,
