It's the little things that drive me crazy...

As I continue making the slow transition from Avid to FCP, little things that should be no-brainers continually trip me up. What can I do to keep my border intact and not lose it when I crop?
Secondly, why is it when I change the speed of a clip on the timeline does it stretch the clip out and push everything down (and vice-a-versa too)? I simply want to - in Avid terms - time warp it within the span of the timeline's clip.
Thanks gents,

Many have made the journey.
You have to leave your baggage at the door, FCP is a very different beast that will confound you to start with.
But you may learn to love many features and wonder why it is so hard on an Avid.
In any case,
the answer you are looking for lies in the order or computation in FCP.
Motion follows Filter.
So you need to work around this little order issue.
Crop the image or footage.
Then nest (under the Sequence menu),
Right click the nested clip in your timeline, select load in Viewer,
add your border.
Welcome to your first new way of thinking in FCP.
You'll find many more times you will wonder how people don't scream 10 times a day on FCP.
Then a years time you might use an Avid and ask "why can't I just import a 2000 pixel image and zoom with out it looking rubbish?"

  • Amazing the little things that are missed

I admit, it's the little conveniences that I miss in 6.0.
I miss being able to play a file before opening it.  Helpful when you have a mass of sound effects to choose from.  Leaves01, Leaves03, Leaves03.  (Yes, you can do that through right-click and spawning a player, but it was nice to have it native.)
Am I just not seeing it or is there no longer a way to right-click and zoom to the tracks you want to see in multitrack?

    Hi Lighthope,
The ability to preview files before opening them is available within the Media Browser panel, in addition to placing shortcuts to commonly accessed locations, searching within a folder, drag or insert directly into multitrack or CD sessions, and other functionality.  You can choose to manually play, auto-play on select, and loop playback.  This functionality has also been added to the Files panel.
The Au3 style of preview in the OS Open Files dialog was very hacky and delicately implemeted on Windows XP, but Windows 7 and OS X no longer made this functionality possible.  Both OSs implemented methods to preview files from these dialogs without launching them.  It was our intent with the Media Browser to implement a better system of browsing your sound effects from within the application, where we would have control over the implementation and would not be constrained by OS support.
As for your track zoom question, are you referring to the functionality where you right-click and drag on the vertical scroll bar in multitrack to zoom in?  This functionality has not been implemented in Audition CS, but a task in our feature backlog exists to revisit track zoom.  Currently  you can zoom into tracks using the mouse scroll-wheel, ALT = (zoom in), ALT - (zoom out) or by dragging the border between tracks.

  • The little things that make you go "grrr"

What minor issues get on your nerves? Perhaps we can all help each other out by airing our grievances.
For me the main thing has got to be that every update of firefox is slower and more leaky than the one before it. It used to be fast and smooth, now it regularly takes over 500mb of ram. I just love the extensions though

I know what you mean. It's most annoying on my eee where it tries to bring up eth0 during runlevel 1. Hangs the process for 1-2 seconds. Not much, but it's an annoyance.

You can configure a lot of this to be exactly like that using sudo and the SGID bit for certain binaries.
I'm annoyed at my eee 900 taking longer to get from bios to grub than from grub to login. I hear there's a bios update that can fix that, but I'm afraid to brick it. Anyone know how I can tell if I have the specific correct bios?

  • It's the little things that bug me...

This is really a bit of a rant; though if someone can help to fix any of my problems that'd be great.
    1. The way that all available midi notes in the entire song seem to appear on the Midi editor window (forget what it's called in Logic) if you double click on it (this must just be me, right??)
    2. The way the scrolling works - if I have a loop of say four bars, Logic doesn't seem to be clever enough to realise it'd be nice if it didn't move the entire arrange page back and forward - that is; a loop which is small enough to fit on the screen doesn't automatically do that. And the follow song button seems to do nothing at times
    3. The limiters - they don't work! I suffer awful PDC with the adaptive limiter on individual tracks, and neither of the limiters do what they're supposed to - ie. limit the signal!
    4. When I solo one track, I always seem to get at least one other track through!
    5. The CST reset toggle... it doesn't happen much, but when you do accidentally catch it you know about it... "undo", please!
So, I'm hoping these are easily fixed (well, probably not the limiter bit...) let me know your thoughts...
And this rant/mild whistleblowing isn't in place of a "feedback form" - I hope we can fix at least one of the problems!
    Thanks,
    Mickey.

    1. The way that all available midi notes in the
entire song seem to appear on the Midi editor window
(forget what it's called in Logic) if you double
click on it (this must just be me, right??)
If you mean the Matrix Editor, you're describing what dbl-clilcking in a blank area of that editor is supposed to do. But probably like you, it's rare that I ever want to see that display. From time to time I'll accidentally call up this display when I think I'm dbl-clicking on a note (to see it in an Event Editor window) but I accidentally click on a blank space in the Matrix Editor instead.
I think this function, so rarely needed, should be modified so that it's invoked by having to hold down a modifier key+dbl click instead. But if you see the all-notes display and you didn't mean to see it, it's pilot error.
    2. The way the scrolling works - if I have a loop of
say four bars, Logic doesn't seem to be clever enough
to realise it'd be nice if it didn't move the entire
arrange page back and forward - that is; a loop which
is small enough to fit on the screen doesn't
automatically do that. And the follow song button
seems to do nothing at times
True 'nuf. I'd recommend having the Catch function on a key command (mine's "A") and be able to turn it on and off as you see fit. Turning Catch off will solve this problem, but I agree that the problem you described is annoying.
    3. The limiters - they don't work! I suffer awful PDC
with the adaptive limiter on individual tracks, and
neither of the limiters do what they're supposed to -
    ie. limit the signal!
    What's PDC?
    4. When I solo one track, I always seem to get at
    least one other track through!
I run into this too. Logic is buggy when it comes to certain Soloing operations. My advice would be to set up a key command for "deselect all tracks" or "deselect all objects" (it's one of those two). Hit this before you solo anything.
    5. The CST reset toggle... it doesn't happen much,
but when you do accidentally catch it you know about
    it... "undo", please!
    CST?
And this rant/mild whistleblowing isn't in place of a
"feedback form" - I hope we can fix at least one of
    the problems!
Since Apple is so secretive and un-communicative as a software manufacturer, and doesn't bother to acknowledge known and unknown issues with Logic, IMO the best thing you could do is post your problems here (as well as the feedback thing). This way other users will either be able to help you out, or, from your experience they'll learn something more about their system.
Anyway, that's my lil' rant on top of your rant.

  • The little things that make you go 'ooh, nice'

One of the things I enjoy with rolling release and access to a lot of development software through aur is the new discoveries you make every so often when you roll out a new version.
I just updated bespin-svn and have to say 'ooh, very nice!'. Some changes, nothing dramatic, but enough to make the whole qt experience just that more polished.
I've generally shied away from using sudo because I prefer the root password for administrative task, not my way easy user pass. I just discovered you can set sudo to always prompt for root password. I am using sudo systemwide now and loving it. Much smoother to use now. Probably also a bit more secure as sometimes I can forget to exit root terminals when multitasking.

  • It's the little things that counts...

I bought on contract a N78 two weeks ago
    Good product, somewhat fancy
But I do miss my smashed Nokia 6233
Because, in the 6233 I could...
     1. send text message to somebody from my recently used numbers, they did not need to be saved. With N78, that option is not there. And if I'm sending one person multiple text messages, I'll have to scroll to contacts for each and every text message sent...
    2.  Marking messages for deletion is now a small hassle. With the 6233, I could mark and unmark without navigating my way through a maze of choices
    3.  The keypads, I keep pressing many keys simultaneously - but I guess its because my paws are huge
Other than the above small differences , I'm happy with the phone, once again Nokia has not disappointed

bear in mind that N78 is a Series60 phone and 6233 is Series40, there are many differences in the messaging applications. I have N78 too and miss the convenience of what Series40 have in the messaging department, but am now used to Series60. N78 is good phone i agree

If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2364921&#2364921
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • The little things #2

Basically I´m thrilled with this update, which I haven´t got yet.
Among others the elastic audio features -Yes, the term "elastic" is used in promo material-And from the video I´ve seen, it seems much more straigtforward than Pro Tools.
    But the little things:
#1 The graphics department. Are you ever struggling to get a volume curve right? Zoom in, zoom in.
PT is much more accurate here. In other words, Logic can be very clumsy.
Not to mention the famous double spl´s and the "suddenly" diminished mixer window.
#2 Wouldn´t it be nice to open sample editor in place, so it corresponds to the position in arrange?
(#3 No, I know!: Selecting i.e 8 drum tracks to make a common fade out, No! (You can use the inspector, numerically))
#4 Does the new package include a decent de-esser?
#5 Got the Waves GTR3. Was that a waste of money, compared to the Amp Designer?
(well not exactly a little thing)
And more of course. Curious to hear your opinions.

It is up to the customer to choose the plan with the amount of data for their needs. If you want 2 GB of data, choose a plan which has 2 GB of data. Don't choose a plan lower in price without enough data for your needs. There are plenty of people for which 1 GB of data is plenty for a month of service.
You simply seem to be unhappy with Verizon's prices. Verizon will lower their prices if and when pressure from the market forces them to do so. Unfortunately for you, that will probably mean Verizon will STILL have a 1 GB plan AND a 2 GB plan with the 1 GB plan being lower in price than the 2 GB plan. I am sure you will then complain Verizon has "so little data on the $35 plan when most apps take so much to run" when the $45 plan could possibly have 2 GB of data just like you wanted.

Nearly a month ago this entertaining (and let’s be honest, a little shocking) thread in the community was posted to the hardware forum: “What’s the dirtiest desktop/laptop you’ve encountered?” From lent, to roaches, to a few encounters I’ll let you read for yourself – it’s clear IT pros have seen the worst of the worst! However, I’m thinking that those in law enforcement IT may have some particularly crazy stories about dirtied laptops or perhaps destroyed hardware in general. So, what’s the craziest thing that’s happened to a laptop, phone or tablet that you’ve encountered in the law enforcement industry?

    1. Turn the router, iPad and printer off
    2. Turn on the router and then wait 30 seconds
    3. Turn on printer and then wait 30 seconds
    4. Turn on your iPad and test print.

I just got my new i phone 5 s and did all the syncing and backing up for my old iphone 4s and set my 5 up and synced it on itunes.  It synced evrything but the contacts and other minor things. those were the only things that really transfered.  My apps and all my music did not. Tthe thing is when i just went to go manually start dowmloading a few of the songs that i knew i already bought , itunes is making me pay forthem again.  Its not saying instal like it usuall does when you go download something aleady purchased on your itunes account.  I think or thought it might have something to do with the fact that i just changed my apple id name right before i got my new phine but my apps all re-downloaded (manually-no syncing) without making me pay for them again.  i dont want to have to purchase allllll my songs again.  Can someone please help me!!  Itried going back to my old id or signing out of this id and signing in as my old apple id but now it wot even get on that oneits likjeit doesnt exist anymore..   And when i plug my old phone it shows in the itunes everything thats supposed to be there but all that doesnt stay in the itunes when i actually un plug it so when i plug my 5 in to my computer none of the stuff is in the store for me to actually transfer it  I am so good with technology and this has me stumped  please help

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

  • IPhoto suddenly doesn't seem to recognize my camera, and essentially freezes. The only thing that makes sense is that another person in my house imported using a different camera and that changed things somehow. Ideas?

    Hi There!
The camera is a Panasonic Lumix. I don't have a USB card reader. I did try and different port although not a different cable.
I did remember one additional thing. I plugged my camera in at work to a PC. It was after that, when I came home, that the iPhoto wasn't working when I connected my camera to our iMac/iPhoto at home. I think this may have caused the problem.
    Cheers!

Hello. I'm having a problem signing onto my iPad mini. When I went to sign on yesterday the number pad to sign on moved upward and now it is out of site. Now I can't sign on the only thing that shows is the Apple logo.

Have you tried to give your iPad a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and see if it helps.
