It's the Processor Crad Stupid!! (Meaning me!)

I have finally concluded that all the problems that I have had with encoding DVD's with either iDVD or Toast rests with having done a processor upgrade. Now I'm not knocking processor cards or the manufacturers of them, just expressing my experience with them (both a Powerlogix 1.0Ghrz and an OWC extreme 1.5Ghrz).
About three years ago I upgraded my PM G4 gigabit ethernet SP 400Mhrz with the powerlogix card to improve speed and expecting to get improved performance when using iDVD and Toast. That never happened. Just a month ago I talked myself into trying the OWC card. The best I ever got in a success rate was maybe 30%. Invariably both apps would freeze my G4 while encoding. I did everything possible to test ram, ram slots, every s/w maintenance process to no avail. Now I could encode audio fine, just not video, and for those who use Toast as well as iLife, I could encode VCD but never SVCD and only rarely video DVD. It didn't matter what type file, how large or small or on what type HD.
Just this today I put the original processor card back in and while it is slow, everything works just like my PM G5 and PB G4. Up to and including iLife 6. I have tried all combinations of file types on both internal/external HD's. The longest iMovie project is 30 minutes.
Just thought I would post this, others may have better success rates, but if you'd done a processor upgrade and are having problems with iDVD/Toast. You may want to reinstall the original processor and try the very same files/projects and see what happens.

    Yes, Audio only (ie.e CD burning) seemed to do well with both cards. Its' the Video that appears (at least in my experience) to be the sticking point.
    So the lesson is once you change the brain of the computer, all bets are off.

  • Stupid question, is there anyway to increase the processor speed?

    i have been using my computer since november 2000, then i decided to get an ipod touch and so i had to install usb 2.0, a new HD, and some additional SDRAM. I know that conventionally there are limits to the amount of SDRAM that will get recognized, and stuff, but is there any way to increase the processor speed aka the MHZ of my computer that would be easier and more cost effective than just buying a new one?

    In addition to Tom's good advice, there's a chap on eBay who modifies CPUs for AGP models who goes by the eBay name of 'ijnuhb'. I've never used any of his mods, but he's been around a while and I've corresponded with him. Seems reliable.

  • I'm a recently graduated film student and my macbook pro needs an upgrade... Will be using FCPX, Adobe CS6 etc. Which 15' macbook pro will be best suited for me? I'm most concerned about the processor speeds (what do they really mean in english?)

    I need a new 15" MBP for film editing. The processor speed numbers are confusing.

    The Tech Specs for the MBPr are here:http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/ and you can see both 15" models come with the i7 processor, one at 2.0 and the other at 2.3 GHz.  The processors are identical except for the clock speed, which directly indicates how many calculations a second they can perform.  If you are doing things like editing or rendering or ray tracing, heavy duty computational things, the faster the processor, the less time it takes to do the task.
    But the 2.3 GHz machine has even more, twice the memory and twice the storage capacity.  With film work that will get to be important since you can load more directly into memory where it is readily accessible to the processor, and twice the storage so you do not have to move material to an external drive so soon.  Both of which will contribute to faster workload turn around for you.
    For your needs, the faster machine with twice the memory and twice the SSD storage will be the thing you need.  And, keep in mind that the MBP cannot be upgraded after purchase like in the past.  So get all you will need now at the time of purchase.

  • Should I upgrade the RAM, the Processor, and add an ATA/133 card?!

    Hello!
    I have a few more questions...
    I only have 2 internal drives...
    (one 300GB which is the main one that runs the applications and one 60Gb used as extra storage mainly for my video projects)
    Do I need an ATA/133 PCI controller card for them?
    will it really be worth it?
    (meaning will it actually make a difference in speed or not?)
    or do you only need one of those cards if you have 3 or 4 drives?
    also,
    would adding more RAM (up to the 2.0 GB limit)
    (my comp is currently at 1.25 GB)
    make a huge difference?
    and the processor...
    if i upgrade it to the 1.8 GHz
    (it's currently at 867 MHz)
    will it be a major improvement?
    i guess I'm asking if i would benefit in upgrading
    everything:
    the RAM,
    the processor,
    and adding an ATA/133 PCI controller card
    or would just upgrading/adding one or two of these be suffice?
    I'm seriously looking into upgrading my comp but I want to know
    what benefits me and what won't really make a difference
    -Cristina-
    p.s.
    I know I posted this somewhere earlier,
    but I'm just so anxious :/
    I've been looking at so much information that my head feels like it's going to explode!

    Hi-
    You don't need a controller card.
    If you keep your main drive(s) on the ATA/100 bus (rear carrier), and add (if you like) up to two drives to the ATA/66 (forward carrier) bus, for storage, archives, etc., you will have fine performance from all drives.
    If you are going to add a drive, I would add a larger drive to the ATA/100 bus, and move the smaller (60gb) to the ATA/66 position, relegated to storage. Your graphics work (is it?) will then run well on the two drives on the ATA/100 bus.
    In a G4, running with maximum RAM (2gb) is always a good performance move, and helps reduce the "spinning beachball", especially with large graphics files. As for "huge difference", not as such, but, RAM is one of the cheapest (especially now) performance buys that can be had, and more RAM is always better than less.
    Upgrading to dual 1.8ghz processors would be a "Wow!" type of upgrade, compared to the current dual 867mhz processors. Be advised, that processor upgrades require that you be able to boot to OS 9 prior to installing the processor upgrade. This is to apply necessary "patches" to allow the system to use the new processors. If you don't still have a boot-able OS 9 installed on your machine, you will need to have that ability prior to a processor upgrade.
    Another processor upgrade option, would be to change your processors to dual 1.25 or 1.42mhz processors from another MDD. The difference from a 11.25 dual processor, and the dual 1.8, is really between 10-15% increase in performance, with the 1.25mhz providing about 20-25% increase over the dual 867mhz processors. The main problem with this approach, is that there are some modifications that must be made, which aren't the average "do it yourself" type of work.
    In the end, though, you may want to take the upgrade money, $600+, sell the MDD, $300+, and put the money on a new Mac. Don't get me wrong, I like upgrades, but it is as much to tinker, as it is to boost performance. And, at the end of the day, I don't need a new Mac. If you don't, either, you will be happy with the upgrades.

  • Having trouble with Netflix, could it be the processor?

    So, yet again, I am asking for info about this 2005 Mac Mini that we were given.  We have been trying to get it up to date so we can watch netflix, and I just upgraded the memory to 1GB, but it still won't play streaming Netflix.  The only thing I can isolate is that it requires an Intel based processor, and according to the computer, ours is 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4.  I really have no clue what that means, but I'm guessing it is not an Intel based processor.  My question is, can the processor be changed to this intel based one, and how the heck do I do this?  I'm getting ready to smash this thing into tiny little pieces if I can't figure out what the problem is.... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

    ... it requires an Intel based processor, and according to the computer, ours is 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4.  I really have no clue what that means, but I'm guessing it is not an Intel based processor....
    You guessed correct.  The PowerPC is not an Intel CPU.
    ... My question is, can the processor be changed to this intel based one, and how the heck do I do this?...
    No, you cannot change the PowerPC CPU to an Intel CPU.  You need to get a new Mac.
    ...I'm getting ready to smash this thing into tiny little pieces if I can't figure out what the problem is.... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
    No need to smash the thing.  If it's working, sell it on eBay or Craigslist or where ever.  Then use the funds to buy a new Mac.    Or  donate to a school or charity and get a tax credit (if applicable to you.)

  • HELP! G5 not booting! red light turns on in the processor area

    hi,
    i have a dual 2.5ghz g5 and for a couple of days it's been acting weird. when i try to boot i hear the chime and before it finishes, it abruptly mutes and a red light goes on in the upper part of the processors area. I have seen through the side of the computer that the light is somewhere close to the processors. The computer does not continue booting, it just remains with the red light on and the fans working at normal speed.
    At first it happened one time (yesterday) and then it worked normally. Now it won't work at all, even after letting it rest for a couple of hours.
    Does anyone know what that light means? I hadn't seen it before. Could it be that the processor is running too hot? I live in a hot area and there's been a hot wave these days. It's reaching 87 F degrees inside but I believe that's within the correct operating temp. range.
    Any help will be appreciated, and the fastest you can answer the better because i really need that computer!!
    I hope it's nothing serious that require taking it to repair because I don't live near any repair service. Please help me!
    thanks in advance!
    dual 2.5 Ghz Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I don't think it is a heat related issue. I've got the same problem with a dual 2.7GHz G5 that's operating in a temperature controlled machine room. Or if it is a heat related issue, it's not an environmental temp problem, but some failing component.
    I ran Hardware Test on it and it indicates that everything is fine with it, but as soon as it is rebooted, it does that half chime and then nothing. No status lights on the logic board either.
    Once it's on, it seems to stay operating just fine. shrug

  • Updating the processor of the p7-1410

    I have a stupid question for anyone who wants to answer it.  A customer brought back a chip that they had purchased, broken open the shrink wrap and discovered they had bought the wrong socket type.  As my boss can't sell it new since the box shrink wrap is opened but the internal seals weren't broken, he's going to let me have it for a percentage off the price.  I currently have a p7-1410 system
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03499677&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
    It says it can upgrade to a I7-2600, but the chip the customer returned was for a I7-3770k which is a newer version of it.  As the bio can be very picky about the installed chip, it's a crapshoot in my experience if the bios accepts it or not so I figured I'd come here for advice before I drop $250 on it (percentage off and employee discount.)

    Hi Pacrat2014,
    As I understand you are looking for confirmation in regards with the processor upgrade for HP Pavilion p7-1410 Desktop PC. As it is mention in the above link for product specification provided by you this unit it clearly states you can upgrade the processor to “Intel Core i7-2xxx (Sandy Bridge) Quad Core/up to 95 W” which has been tested by HP and should work fine on your unit.
    Let us know how it goes!

  • I have a CQ60-214dx laptop. I would like to upgrade the processor in it to something else.

    I have a CQ60-214dx laptop. I would like to upgrade the processor in it to something else. I have read on the Internet that it is possible to swap out the processor as long as you find the right socket, wattage, etc. processor. Is there a list out there of what is compatible with the laptop I have? I was hoping to find a processor that would take it from a dual core machine to a core2duo machine. Thanks for any info you can give me!

    Hi:
    According to the specs page for your notebook it comes with a Pentium T3400 processor.
    According to the service manual, link below, in Chapter 1, on page 1-1, it lists all supported processors that can be installed in your machine.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02985882.pdf
    That means you can go from your little ol' T3400 processor, all the way up to the mighty T9600 if you want to.
    You are 100% correct about needing to know the particulars about the processor's FSB speed, L2 cache, lithography, etc.
    Apparently notebook PC's have a much wider range of processors one can install. In a desktop for example, rarely do you get such latitude.
    In any event, the only thing you need to check for you PC, is the BIOS release notes to see if any are required to support a faster or newer processor.
    I've taken the liberty of doing that for you and note that no BIOS updates are necessary to install any of the supported Intel processors listed for you notebook.
    There is one other tool I like to use and that is the Intel Processor Comparison tool.
    Here is a sample of comparisons for you to review for proessors that would work in your notebook.
     http://ark.intel.com/compare/35581,35568,35563,35583
    I am surprised that your notebook can handle processors from 2 different code names.
    I also don't like that the sockets supported are not named exactly the same. I googled the difference and it doesn't appear to matter.
    However, it should have either the GM or PM 45 chipset which supports any of those Pentium processors listed in the manual.
    http://ark.intel.com/products/chipsets/35509#compatibility
    I believe the GL40 chipset is for celeron processors only.
    So, that is basically it in a nutshell. You should be able to upgrade to any of the Pentium processors listed.

  • What are the Processor, Operating system, hard drive device, Total Memory, Network card, System Graphics of the Silver ipad air

    what are the Processor, Operating system, hard drive device, Total Memory, Network card, System Graphics of the Silver ipad air?

    "Memory" in this case means RAM, the working space for the processor in the iPad. It is different from storage space, the latter being what is referred to by the "32GB", "64GB" etc. specification.

  • Any way to run the processor before the compiler throws an error?

    Hi,
    I want to generate code for an annotation @OverrideAll that would implement all the interface I methods with some default body.:
    Example
    interface I {
      void method();
    @OverrideAll
    class A implements I {
    }would have to generate code like this:
    class A_gen implements I {
      public void method() {
    class A extends A_gen {}However, I have the problem that the original source file does NOT compile because the interface I is not implemented, and as such, the annotation processor never runs. My question is:
    Is there any way I could force the annotation processor to run before the compiler shows the error? Or at least some way to supress this error message and give a chance to the annotation processor to run?
    TIA,
    Gabriel

    Hi,
    Thanks for answering so soon.
    I would prefer not to name the generated class in the original source code. As an alternative I thought to rather generate a subclass, but then there is the instantiation problem (can´t do it without creating a factory method in class A and making it abstract, and indeed again need to name the generated class):
    @OverrideAll
    abstract class A implements I {
    public static A create() {
    return new A_gen();
    // generated class
    class A_gen extends A {
    public void method() {
    }so it seems I reached a dead end here.
    It would really help if (using the superclass generation as originally posted) I could change in the processor the superclass of class A to be A_gen, but it would require AST rewritting and I guess it is not a good option (if at all possible.)Belingueres,There are two ways to do what you want. You can either generate a superclass of A, or a subclass of A.
    If you generate a superclass, you need to specify the generated superclass's name in the extends clause of A. But you said "I would prefer not to name the generated class in the original source code", but give no reasons then go off exploring the second alternative.
    If you generate a subclass of A, then you need a way for the rest of the code to instantiate As without really knowing about the subclass, so you do in fact need a factory method in A which actually returns A_gens.
    I suggest you revisit your preference for not naming the generated class, and work out why you have that preference, and whether it is actually a sound engineering constraint, an aesthetic nicety (maybe in terms of not wanting the implemention strategy to be brought to the surface) or something emotional.
    You can do what you want with annotation processing, but you must choose between naming the generated superclass in the extends, or having an factory method that names the subclass.
    A related issue is that if you generate the superclass, the annotation processor can pick up the name of the class to be generated from the "extends" clause, and you therefore don't need to specify it any other way, whereas if you generate a subclass, the annotation processor cannot infer the name of the subclass that is being instantiated from the factory method (unless you use non standard APIs in your annotation processor), which means you need to explicitly name it as an attribute of the annotation.
    I have a preference for generating a superclass because that imposes less restrictions on whatever else you do with the class, and less of the code generation implementation details leak up into the class's signature.
    Also note when generating a superclass, if you want to extend something other than Object, then you need to specify that as an annotation value, usually as a Class<?>.

  • How to find the processor we are using in C code

    I have to run a code on both solaris and linux.But before running the code i want to know which processor it is going to run and accordingly i can insert processor specific functions or code........is there are any preprocessors in c which can help to find it

    By "processor" do you mean the computer chip compiling the code, the computer chip executing the application, or something else?
    Standard C provides no way to find out what chip you are using, but most platforms provide a way, different for every platform. By "platform", I mean the combination of computer and operating system.
    Using Sun Studio on Solaris, the compiler predefines some macros that tell you the class of computer being compiled for. See the C Users Guide for details. On a SPARC system, the compiler predefines the macro __sparc. If I'm compiling for 64 bits, it predefines the macro __sparcv9. On an x86 or Opteron system, it predfines the macro __i386. On an Operton system in 64-bit mode, it predefines the macros
    __x86_64 __x86_64__ amd64   _amd64__
    The Solaris OS provides ways to find out the architectural characteristics, mostly via command-line utilities such as prtconf, psrinfo, and others. Linux provides x86conf.

    I want to pass along a couple of tips that will get you more and better response on this list.
    1) There is an un-written rule that says more "stars" is better than just one star. Giving a one star rating will probably eliminate that responder from individuals that are willing to anser your question.
    2) If someone gives you an answer that meets your needs, reply to that answer and say that it worked.
    3) If someone suggests that you look at an example, DO IT! LV comes with a wonderful set of examples that demonstate almost all of the core functionality of LV. Familiarity with all of the LV examples will get you through about 80% of the Certified LabVIEW Developer exam.
    4) If you have a question first search the examples for something tha
    t may help you. If you can not find an example that is exactly what you want, find one that is close and post a question along the lines of "I want to do something similar to example X, how can I modify it to do Y".
    5) Some of the greatest LabVIEW minds offer there services and advice for free on this exchange. If you treat them good, they can get you through almost every challenge that can be encountered in LV.
    6) If English is not your native language, post your question in the language you favor. There is probably someone around that can help. "We're big, we're bad, we're international!"
