It's time to move on

I've been using archlinux for almost a year now, and it's time to move on now. The reason is that archlinux is not really grown up yet, and improving on that is very hard to do.
I've been working on prerelease gnome and KDE packages for a while now and I don't feel the improvements show up in archlinux very much. When I file bugs, most of them get closed with wontfix, or don't get looked on at all.
As long as I've done Gnome 2.7 for archlinux, I haven't had any feedback from package maintainers. This feels like I'm doing all this for nothing.
Working with the gnome team on archlinux just doesn't really work out. I've also tasted something of the KDE team, which is what I like. KDE is just not the desktop I use, so I won't do much with that anymore.
I will keep the gnome 2.7 repository up for a while, but I won't improve it. When gnome 2.8 is in archlinux, I'll delete everything from that server.
I will quit developing packages for archlinux and look for another distro. Probably Debian again, or maybe some distro I haven't tasted yet.

in many cases youare absoolutely correct. but one thing i know is that if you don't at least TRY to learn some of the "ugly underbelly" of linux alot of "veterans" won't even give you the time of day. I would rather help someone get a foothold and teach them some self reliance (because it is way better for them and the community) than continually hold someone's hand through every trial and tribulation. we all have that period where we are very reliant on everyone else but that changes the sooner one realizes that the answers are there in front of them and often come faster than waiting for someone to answer here or on irc.
much of the development is lead by an elite few who hold all the keys. i didn't think AL was like that until now, i thought it was very easy to become a valuable member of the dev team. i was recently involved in a project to create a distro with really open development aims - that idealogy went south very quickly (IMHO) with the introduction of a new dev, who, i felt, had far too much influence on the process.
it is too easy to become a dev. most have little experience and most have far too little time to spend doing their development. the arch dev team is often plagued with what appears to be indifference or apathy. most of the time it is just poor time management and trying to do too much stuff that they really have knowledge about.
arch needs more devs that are not at school and can spend time working on their section of the distro. it is also important for all devs to interact with the community as much as they may not want to.
sad day for AL
it is a sad day when anyone leaves a distro but all we can do is wish them well. (i while i have done this sort of thing before i don't really understand why people have to announce their reasons for leaving and try to make people feel bad.) ultimately i think JGC could have asked to take over maintaining arch's gnome packages.
ultimately developing is not a "fun" job and is very thankless. and it is even harder when people think that you don't care or are not doing your job.

I need to create Quick time vr movies, and I need to know the exact sequance of steeps to do it, and if the starting point I use is correct.

2) Then, with photoshop (CS4) I choose: Automate/photomerge and I select all them to joint them in a bigger 360° panoramic one (www.stebianchi.com/quicktimevrhelp/pan.jpg). If, untill here, all is correct, the first question: in photoshop Photomerge layout option, do I have to choose one voice "auto, perspective, cylindrical, spherical, etc..." rather than anoter one of these?
3) from here, I really need your help.
First of all: the great doubt:
My photos can not cover a spherical panorama, they're only a "ring" around a center (and not a spherical texture). To cover all the surface (or almost all, ok...) of my ambient, do I have to use a wider lens on my camera or there is a different solution (for ex a vertical photomerge?).
4) Done this, I think I shuold buy a software like Cubic converter, to set and export the QTVR movie. Right?

You can call your local apple store(find one on the home page of apple.com) and they will give you instructions how to convert DVD to iPod. That is what they told me, but from what I heard, you may need more than Quicktime Pro. Just call and ask them, because if you make a manual of how to do it, it could help me a lot.

If the track volume automation curve is enabled, the volume slider for the track will move with the automation curve.

Hi Shilpa,
First thing I will say that if you reverse an actual payment from customer's account, there are many impacts on the customer side and on SAP side. I think you have already taken care all these things.
Now for the first point if you want the open SD will not appear in the print document, you can do it by reversing the security deposit or by invoicing printing configuration. For the first option you can go to change security deposit (FPSEC2) and reverse it. To do this all the SD documents should be in open status.
For the second option you can go to the following menu path:
SPRO-SAP Utilities-Invoicing-Invoice Processing-Item Selection in Invoicing-Item Selection in Account Maintenance/ Define Sub-Items
In the above menu path for clearing type R4 (Invoicing) and periodic billing (R41), you can control the items which will be printed in the invoice. Select the clearing type and click on the 'Item selection on bill print out' on the left hand side. For the clearing category (maintained at contract account level) you can maintain the main and sub transaction of security deposit (might be 0020 / 0020) and you can see a field 'IP' (Item Will Be Printed on the Bill) where you should maintain it blank. If you do that, security deposit will not be picked up in the invoice document. However it will remain open in the account if you just stop the printing of SD and keep it in the account.
However it totally depnds on the business requirement and related implications whether you want to reverse the SD or you want to keep this in account and do not want to show them on the bill.
Now for the second point you have mentioned, you need to first decide what you will do with the SD payments made by customer.
Either you can release the SD amount and refund it to customer or the amount can be adjusted with the next invoice. Again it depends on business requirement whether you will refund any payment made against SD or you will simply reverse all open security deposits.
Also if you want to stop the SD creation process now onwards, you need to revert all SD configuration like main / sub transaction configuration for SD, default SD releted settings etc. There is no standard process for it. If you want to reverse the SD, you can write a custom program. The configuration related things need to be done manually.
Since all the things will impact the business process or customer, I hope you will take care those things before coming to a conclusion.

Insert or Cut Time and move automation data - how to do it?

Hi when I cut or insert time it moves the regions but not the automation data. I have tried switching nn 'move automation with regions' but it doesn't move the automation that goes past the end f regions eg plug in settings like delay feedbacks etc.
a) this seems to me to be really crazy - why if you had done a lot of detailed automation programming at the end of a song would you not want it to move if you cut 4 bars from earlier on in the song?
any ideas appreciated very much!!

after using logic for years I have discovered a new bit and something very weird.
New Bit:
As well as Cut/Insert Time in the Region Menu
there is a Cut/Insert Time in the Edit menu.
if I start here:

IPod charger is broken, it goes on and off every time it moves, what's wrong?

My iPod charger is broken. My IPod 5 is fine, but the lightning cable may seem to be bent or just broken, it could be the wires but I'm not so sure.

Use Java Timer to move a panel smoothly, need help!

I am using JBuilder to build an Windows Application.
I put everything on the contentPane. There is one Panel I call it "jPanelDemo" and another panel "jPanelText".
Now I want to start a timer, and move jPanelDemo panel from the right side of jPanelText to the same location of jPanelText, when the timer stops, jPanelDemo should place the jPanelText position.

I did the similar codeing in .NET programming and it worked fine. However, I translate the code to Java. When I run this code, the timer actually works, and jPanelDemo does move and replace the jPanelText.
The problem I am facing now is: when I start the timer, the movement of jPanelDemo cannot be seen, until the timer stopped, the jPanelDemo poped up at the same location of jPanelText.
I tried to use contentPane.repaint(), it doesn't work for me.
Please help me solve this problem.

Seeking advise on techniques for making a time-lapse movie

Hi, This isn't technically a question having to do with FCE directly, but it seems like a good place to ask. I need to make a time-lapse movie showing the changing daylight on a fixed point from dawn until dusk. It will be edited in FCE, but I have no idea of how many seconds I should shoot at a time, and at what intervals I should shoot them. Or.... would there be any advantage to shooting still photos and then importing them into FCE?
Can you suggest any resources which I could read on the subject?

Lets say you are doing this shoot at equinox (ie 12 hrs between sunrise and sunset).
Since most cameras do not hold storage media that can hold 12 hours of media in one file, you need to either use an intervalometer setting on the cam (allowing for incremental recording) or record to an external drive that CAN hold 12 hrs of media.
The approach one takes depends upon the recording limitations. If using external storage that can record the full length, it's just a matter of bringing in the file and speeding it up to whatever makes sense to your needs.
If you are going to use an incremental capture approach, then you really do need to know what will be the speed of the final clip. Is this thing going to play back at real time? 2x, 10x, 100x? Or, asked another way, how long do you want it to run? 30 sec, 1 min, 5 min, 20 min, etc?
Once you know that, it's really simple math to figure out.
Video (in NTSC land) runs at 30 frames per second (29.97 if we are being precise).
This means if you were to record it in real time you'd require 1,296,000 frames
12 hrs x (60 min per hr) x (60 sec per min) x (30 frames per sec).
If you want it to play 100x faster, you would need 12,960 frames. This can be accomplished by recording every 100th possible frame (that is, snapping an image every 3 1/3 seconds)
Or, if you work it backwards - thinking that you'd like to compress 12 hrs to 12 minutes, you'd need to acquire one frame every 2 seconds. (This yields a 60x increase in speed.)

No Audio/Video when playing a file (timer bar moves though)

As the title says, the timer bar moves showing that the codecs are there. I'm using K-lite codec pack/Media Player Classic and everything works fine. I have also updated Itunes (installing the latest version of quicktime forced my hand on that one) so everything is up to date. Originally i thought it was all the codecs i had installed in the past conflicting with each other so i wiped out everything and just tried installing Quicktime by itself and adding the Divx codec afterwards but i still get the same problem.
Now you may ask, i can play any file i want with MPC, whats the problem? And here it is.. I want to be able to import videos to Photoshop CS3 Extended and apparently it runs off Quicktime so if my quicktime doesn't work, neither will my videos in photoshop.
To summarize:
-Right now i have MPC+Klite codecs installed along with the latest version of Itunes and Quicktime
-My goal is to be able to play avi files with my quicktime.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks for reading.

Yes, I have heard of that with certain Mac OS X 10.9 and OS X 10.10 installations. Is that what you have? No current solution but please file a bug report and I'll look into it more deeply when I get back to the office on Monday.
I've advised others to turn off thumbnails if it is really slowing down your workflow.

HDR Time Lapse .mov flicker problems

Using Lightroom 2.3 trying to create an HDR Time Lapse .mov with quicktimepro. I have slight shutter adjustments (flickers) to correct in many images. I was unable to use manual exposure as time was an issue so auto exp. and manual focus was my only option. This was a scene over water of an amusement park and the waves are crashing, which I did not think of, so the ocean highlights created in camera slight speed adjustments...
Is there a way to match the sky exposure evenly in all the frames (240 of them) using an auto batch eye dropper action in Lightroom or PS3?
To add to my problem I have a single jpeg and need to convert to an HDR using Photomatix. I know raw would of been easier but was not thinking....
I have already tried to tweak each image seperately so I am half way there but still have flickers. Can anyone offer advice that won't take me all day.

I was hoping lightroom or PS3 could batch correct the exposures to match each other....Jao gave me "match total exposures" from the settings menu and this helped but still have to correct some by eye. You are right about the shutter drift. I used a Nikon D200 and that has issues. Looking to buy the D700 soon.
My other problem was the HDR conversion of a single Raw frame.....I am going to try and "match total exposures" before doing the HDR and see if that works....

Thanks for getting back to me. I have discovered that the footage has 2 different frame rates. The clips are 23.976 and 29.976, 1920x1080. The sequence is 1920x1080 @ 23.976fps. I know they should ideally be conformed and I will do that, but this is the first time I've had this issue using Premiere. What I have done is unlink and relink the footage and still the same thing. It does not crash if I do not mix the frame rate in my selection of clips.

I have to render every time i move a clip!

i am a musician and im trying to use fcp to edit my videos to match my final product with my mp3 final project audio from garage band. i recorded in photobooth and recorded at the same time as garage band using my condenser mic for better audio. i changed my files to pro res 422, but every time i move any clip some portion needs to be re rendered, ive set the sequence to pro res 422 but i still cant figure out whats going on. i have a drum, piano, vocal, guitar videos that all match to the audio but i cant really do much when it takes 14 minutes to render a 3 minute clip.

Your problem stems from the video recording software you used. The clips in your browser are all showing as frame rates ranging from 9fps to 11fps. But your sequence is 29.97. FCP is trying to stretch those video files out to match the sequence frame rate, but it requires rendering to do so.
Some video capture programs produce videos that are in some way incompatible with FCP because FCP reads the fps wrong. Snapz Pro is one, there are probably others. If you actually recorded the files in 29.97, then you need to run them through compressor to make them FCP compatible. Choose a pro res preset, but make sure that in the video settings that 29.97 is selected (and not "current").

I have moved them out of the inbox to other mailboxes again and again, but then they keep showing up in the inbox again as soon as I click on any mailbox other than the inbox. Very frustrating.
This has only happened since I installed Mavericks on both my Macbook Pro and my iMac. It happens on both of them.
Any ideas how to fix it?

This may be one of the known issues with Gmail and it's IMAP settings working with Maverick's Mail.
It all comes down to if you have the ALL MAIL folder visible or not via IMAP.
If you do not, then you get the behavior you are describing.
If you do have ALL MAIL visible, then there isn't a problem.
