It started with iTunes Plus

I decided to upgrade some songs to iTunes Plus. When I closed iTunes and came back to it, it started to rebuild the iTunes Library. That's when I noticed some songs were missing from the iTunes listings, though they were still on the external Firewire drive where I keep the files. I imported the missing songs and things seemed fine until I synced my iPhone 3G and watched in horror as about half of my apps disappeared. I know I can download them again, but...
When I closed and re-opened iTunes again, it started to rebuild the library file again.
Everything worked fine...until I upgraded about 15 songs to iTunes Plus.
Has anyone run into this problem? If so, what did you do?
TIA, Bob

There is no requirement to store content on an iDevice, the user controls this by managing the content on the iDevice via iTunes.
Keeping content on the computer or an external drive is a good practice from a backup perspective.  There is no guarantee that content in iTunes will always be there.  Content is added and removed regularly based on rights from the content owners.
If users wish to always have access to the content they purchased, the user should keep local copies.

    Restart your computer
While your computer is restarting, clear all of the applications from the background on your iPhone. You can do this by pushing the home button twice and swiping the programs off the screen by pushing them upwards.
After you are done doing that, restart your phone.
Wait about 10 seconds or so and turn your phone back on. By the time you get your phone back on your computer should be completly restarted and ready to go.
When your phone is back on, plug it into your computer. This should automatically bring up your Itunes, you may get another pop up that says autoplay, you can close that out. That's it. I hope it helps and good luck

  • Okay, what is the deal with ITUNES plus?

I've read multiple threads and post. I've downloaded the new version. From what I've gathered, it seems only EMI artists are currently part of the ITUNES plus? I also understand you are "supposed" to be getting a better quality of sound from artists you download from Itunes Plus? Furthermore, I see they increased the price for a single download for any artist associated with ITUNES plus. Now... anyone care to explain to me what all this mention of DRM-free means? Does this mean we can actually convert our purchases to mp3's and upload them up to our non-apple music player? Because this is all I care about at this point. However, since it's only restricted to EMI artists and I haven't a single tune downloaded from that companies' artists, this new version means squat to me. Does this mean, eventually the other companies will jump on the band wagon, and we'll be able to finally convert our music to play on any music player? I hope so. But for now, it just seems like Apple just found a way to charge us more for their songs. Hmmm?
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Almost since the inception of iTMS and later iTS the Internet has been rife with people complaining about Apple's use of DRM on music tracks. Obviously no record company was going to sign up to DRM-free music on the first day of iTMS as it seemed obvious that it would be onward distributed with no financial recompense to the record company so DRM was used to allow the track to be played on five computers and any number of connected iPods (very generous really). However acknowledging the discontent around the globe Apple's CEO Steve Jobs wrote his Thoughts on Music. Shortly after that EMI obliged Apple's request and agreed to offer DRM-free music that you could potentially totally abuse and send to all your friends (Don't though). Apple and EMI believe that, in actual fact, the ease of iTS will mean that people won't do that but they will actually buy music themselves. Actually iTunes Plus trackscontain your iTS username so it's traceable.
    Advantages of iTunes Plus:
256k (vs 128k) encoded tracks - better quality for the serious audiophiles.
DRM-free means you can load your tracks on to your generic mp3 player/mobile phone etc.
Freedom - not tied in to the iPod platform (a big risk to Apple IMHO).
    Disadvantages of iTunes Plus:
    Higher cost.
Greater file size = less tracks on your iPod.
    EMI tracks only.
I think it's a good idea to offer the choice, and a few cents extra for the freedom is probably worth it. I see this as Apple driving and leading the music industry to improve the service for us the customer. Happy Days.

  • HT1711 Will I have to pay for the track again when re-purchasing with itunes plus?

Will I have to pay for the track again when re-purchasing with itunes plus?

The only ways to upgrade a track from the old format of 128kbps with DRM to the "iTunes Plus" format are to either repurchase the track or to subscribe to iTunes Match. The offer to upgrade an individual track for a small fee was discontinued a number of months ago.
    Regards.

  • Price of albums with iTunes Plus

Browsing through the store with iTunes Plus, I notice that the price of individual tracks is 99 UK pence but the price of the whole CD is the same as the non iTunes Plus price.
If this a mistake? Or are the DRM free albums being sold as a large discount, or are the whole CDs non DRM free at the moment?
    Confused.

So you get a DRM free album at the original price? That is a very large discount - it seems almost too good to be true.
But then I don't suppose upgraging an existing full album is free.
I am still a rather suspicious about this, but given the problems people seem to be having with downloading the iTunes + tracks, I think I will leave it till the new arrangemts settle down.

  • Possible issue with iTunes Plus search

Hi, I've been doing some store searching with the 'Limit your search to iTunes Plus' checkbox ticked, and noticed an odd result where the search appears to return a standard (not 'Plus') album. Searching for the artist 'Kelley Polar' returns
    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=252108582&s=14344 4
which doesn't seem to be an iTunes Plus album - there is no mention of Plus, and the tracks are all £0.79 rather than £0.99 (this is on the UK store).
Can anyone can confirm whether they see this problem, or whether it actually is a Plus album but just not marked as such?
    Thanks in advance.

I've experienced the same plroblem with the "Limit your search to iTunes Plus" checkbox in the power search function. In fact, I performed a search without the checkbox, and then again with it, and the result set was significantly reduced. I enthusiastically purchased the selection I wanted that remained, only to realize I had been "tricked" into purchasing the 128Kbps DRM-encrusted version of the album.
Caveat emptor, and all, but this seems either an egregious error on the part of the iTunes store, or borderline fraudulent.

  • Help with iTunes Plus/ DRM purchases!

I have several songs that i have purchased on iTunes. When i got the message from iTunes that i could get half my library upgraded to iTunes Plus/DRM free i upgraded. I got a message saying that i could keep my DRM/old purchases in a old folder i clicked yes. A few days before this i backed up all my purchases onto a disc, anyways some how they ended up on my library so i ended up with all doubles of my iTunes purchased music. So now i have triple copies of my purchases and i am trying to free up space. How do i delete the old copies/DRM purchases? How do i know what songs are iTunes Plus quality so i don't erase those ? Please help this is making my head hurt!

    Hi There
I have had this same problem, I solved it by going to the file menu in iTunes and selecting "Show Duplicates" then selecting the purchased duplicates and pressing command + i and under the summary tab looking at the file kind (located under the album art). The DRM versions of your songs will have Protected AAC audio file and the DRM free versions will have Purchased AAC audio file. Then Manually deleting the Protected AAC audio file copies. This is time consuming and an annoyance but I have found no other way of doing this.
    Hope this helps

  • Brought a song with iTunes plus.. but no device understands it?

    Hi all,
Ive brought a song from iTunes with the hope of putting it on my Motorola phone.
However when I copy it accross it says it doesnt understand the file format. It used to work, so i'm not sure why it doesnt now?
Ive dug out my old creative MP3 Player and ive put the song on but it doesnt show up in the players list so I cant play it on the Creative either?
What can I do to get this working?
    Thanks!!

    Hi Dean Parker,
Ok, so you bought an iTunes Plus song from the iTunes Store? This means it's not encrypted, therefore you can use it in a healthy way, by converting it and so on!
Also, that song is in .aac audio format, which I'm sure it' not compatible with your Motorola phone! That's the reason of your problem... So, you'll need to convert it to .mp3 file, using the converting program in the market!
    Hope this helps!

  • Problems with iTunes Plus upgrade

Is anyone else having problems with downloading?
I bought the update yesterday, but none of the 69 songs have downloaded. Now, when I click on "Download Now" either nothing happens OR I get a message saying that the iTunes Store is having problems and that it can't connect.
Yet, I'm reading everywhere that people are doing this just fine. So, what gives?
I sent Apple an e-mail yesterday, but no response. Any ideas?

    OK, so this finally worked!
I got an e-mail response from iTunes support and they stated the following:
"I'm sorry you ran into an error when you tried to use the iTunes Store. This error appears to be caused by a temporary issue with the iTunes Store that should be resolved within the next 24 hours. Please check the iTunes Store again. All features should be working well.
If you received this error while downloading a large purchase order, please understand that the cause of the error may be a combination of the size of the order you are downloading and the speed of your connection. Please try another connection that is faster than your current connection. If this is not possible, please continue to attempt to download your purchase. This may take several attempts.
If you have any questions regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to reply to this email. Thank you so much for being an iTunes Store customer. I hope you have a fantastic day."
Anyway, my connection is perfect, so it must have been something with the store. The tracks have now been updated.
    The frustrating thing is that:
    (1) My "upgrade my library" now only consists of one track — that I downloaded and subsequently deleted long ago.
    (2) I have several other albums/tracks that are in original iTunes format and now available in iTunes Plus, BUT not available for upgrade. This is frustrating; and although I think/hope they will be available soon, I won't be able to update given the fact that the track mentioned above in (1) has been deleted.
I have sent a reply to the iTunes Store rep about these issues and I will let everyone know what he says.

  • Problems with iTunes Plus in Canada?

As the subject suggests, I'm in Canada. I can open the iTunes store, no problem but when I try to connect to iTunes Plus from the Quick Links portion of the iTunes store, I get an error saying "Could not complete iTunes Store request. The store may be busy". Is iTunes Plus available in Canada?

    Jason Lixfeld wrote:
That's just it - as far as I understand the only place you can get the "upgrade my library" menu is from within the iT+ in Quick Links,
    Jason Lixfeld wrote:
Negative. As I said above, you should get an iT+ window just about under the Download of the week. From there, you get to the iT+ store, and THEN, you have an Update My library option, in big letters, which will say how many of your aac 128 songs can be upgraded.
From my end, all you see under Quick Links is «Itunes Plus», which leads to an error message.

  • Replacing iTunes content with iTunes Plus

I see on my iTunes account that I have many songs I purchased prior to DRM-free content, and these "upgradable" songs number about 300. This might make things easier, but when I purchase the "upgraded" version, will the new version of the song also appear in the playlists that the original version was placed in? Or will I have to manually put the new iTunes Plus version back into the playlists? That might not be worth the cost to upgrade if I have to go back and replace each song in every playlist that it appears in.

Your upgraded iTunes Plus music will replace the original purchases in your library. You will be given an option to delete the original files or move them to your desktop at time of download.  However, in my experience, the new versions don't always make it to my playlists.

  • How to get started with iTunes/iMatch

I am trying to import my library of 3000 mp3 songs into iTunes/iMatch/iCloud. I have subscribed to iMatch. The problem is that there doesn't appear to be any guidance about how to do this, what the difference between iTunes, iMatch, and iCloud is, where the music is stored, and so on.  The only thing I found was an article on the iTunes support site that said "Using iMatch is easy."  I didn't find that to be the case.
I have now created an unholy mess that I have no idea how to get out of.   My iTunes media folder has four albums in it, all of which have one copy of some of the songs in AAC (m4a) format.  Meanwhile, in iTunes, I have seven albums, some of which are in my iTunes library and some of which aren't.  When I look at the music collection in iTunes, I have four or five copies of each song.  I am really unclear where these songs are residing (in the Cloud maybe?), why there are so many copies, and so on.
Obviously, just randomly flailing is not going to solve this problem.  So are there in fact any instructions for how to do this rather simple task and keep everything organized and understand what is going on?

First, iCloud and iTunes Match (not "iMatch") are not the same thing. Apple uses the term "iCloud" interchangably, but that is just confusing for most people, unfortunately.
Enabling iTunes Match is as simple pulling down the Store menu in iTunes and selecting "turn on iTunes Match." That's all the guidance there is. The process will then scan the iTunes library and "match" or "upload" all the tracks it can. The original tracks on the computer's internal HDD stay right where they are and are not changed in any way. Nor is the location of the iTunes library magically changed to the cloud.
I strongly suggest you stop being concerned with what the files in the iTunes Media folder look like and let iTunes manage the files. If you're going to use iTunes then you should only interact with the music through iTunes. Trying to manage the files in the Finder/Windows Explorer is only going to frustrate you. You can group albums together by editing the ID3 tags by highlighting the tracks of an Album and doing a Get Info...
So if you post back with some specific questions we will do our best to help you.
